That's how I got back into it: through the comics. I was a fan of Beast Wars back in the day, but after the show switched to Beast Machines I lost interest. About a year ago a friend recommended More Than Meets the Eye. I bought it digitally, devoured it, bought the related titles, devoured those, and I've been following all of the Transformers titles ever since.
Because I was not familiar with who different characters were, some of the "reveals" fell a little flat for me (there was a storyline called Shadowplay that had a huge reveal that I didn't even catch, but looking back now I can see how that reveal must have been a serious WHOAA moment for fans who'd been reading for a while. ;)
I also had a problem telling characters apart, especially when the books switched to new artists. I figured it out eventually, though, and reading the TFWiki summaries help a lot.
But yeah, highly recommended. I would suggest starting with More Than Meets the Eye volume 1, which starts with the Death of Optimus Prime story, and going from there.
As an added carrot, Comixology is having a big sale right now on the Transformers stuff, so it's a good time to pick up stuff you're interested in.
No need for online scans, mate. You can buy the online version on comixology, which has much better quality than the clandestine product. Plus, you're supporting the creators and ensuring IDW continues forward with the TF comics.
As the other poster said, Puggle.
I ordered this figure off Amazon for my TC shelf.

Def doesn't scale well with the Earthrise figure, but it's at least something. It does scale a lot better next to the TFCC Marissa Fairborne tho
I just got my copy today and I checked they have one on Amazon.uk !

The physical books are pricey but you can get the full series on Amazon Kindle for $76 USD. Well worth it in my opinion.
I too, read Lost Light before MTMTE. Enjoyed it, yes, but had to read lots of wiki stuff to keep up with it. I'm buying the Phase 2 hardcovers now.
Idw DOES do a Netflix style model. They have a Transformers app powered by comixology you can pay for (monthly) to get the whole catalogue.
Here's the Google play like to that: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idw.transformers.reader
But also check your local library first. If they don't have them physically, they might have them in a library ebook sharing app like Hooplah.
Robots in Disguise by John Barber? I wouldn't recommend that, it's a long running series and quite violent in places.
Did he like the Bumblebee film? There was an all-ages tie in comic to that which might work for you https://www.amazon.co.uk/TRANSFORMERS-BUMBLEBEE-MOVIE-PREQUEL-CYBERTRON/dp/1684052297/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=bumblebee+movie+prequel&qid=1597247686&sr=8-1
That is complete nonsense. But get this. It’s cheaper and better and they look hella good on a shelf!
Transformers: IDW Collection Phase Two Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1631400401/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vFHlFbCQ4NWV4
Unless you specifically want individual issues, your best bet for physical copies would be to to get the Transformers IDW Collection books on Amazon. It collects them into large graphic novels and puts the different titles in the correct order. Keep in mind that physical copies are a lot more expensive than digital. Here’s a link for volume 1.
Looks like Amazon Australia has a third party selling some copies
