I'll just link you to a book from Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Britannica Illustrated Science Library series. It has pictures and not a lot of words so it's simple enough even you could understand. It's only 9 dollars, so quite the bargain for the wealth of science and knowledge you're about to embark on discovering!
