Better CPU 100% - apple charges a crazy markup for storage. Do you even need 2tb SSD? I have the 512gb and it's fine - I just archive my sessions on an external raid and in the cloud when I'm done with them. More secure than storing them on your internal drive, and that money you save could instead go towards and external SDD and then some.
I use a 1tb external SSD for my samples and it works great. If you really think you need 2 TB you could get this and still save $100 from the apple upgrade from 1tb to 2
You might want to take a look at Reaper if you're just getting started. It's a whole world of cash less expensive, and just as fully featured as ProTools, without the commitment. There's also PT First, which is... a thing, but not an expensive thing, so that's good.
There's a built in feature on macs called Automator that can rename hundreds of files at the same time within certain criteria.
Just buy a standard iPad - I bought mine brand new for around $250 new on Amazon when they had an offer on. That's what I use with the artist dock. Seems they're 300 on amazon right now, which is 30 bucks cheaper than the apple site.
So this happens to all sessions you save with Pro Tools?
Just a few preliminary things you can do. Download and install Ccleaner. Run it, use the Cleaner on the top left. Click the "run cleaner" button on the bottom right.
After the cleaner does its thing, click "Registry" on the top left. Tell it to "Scan for issues". Once it finds them, click "fix" and then "fix all". It will give you the option of backing up, say yes and save the file to a folder somewhere.
Restart, then follow the instructions here and make sure you schedule a disk check. This will scan for bad sectors on your hard drive and attempt to recover them.
After you schedule the check, restart again. It will now boot and use chkdsk. It could take awhile, just leave it alone until it loads your desktop. Then try Pro Tools again.
This time, create a session and save it before you import session data. Then quit PT and try to load that session again. If it works, import the session data from your faulty project. Save, then quit again. Open the new project with all the imported assets and see if it works.
If the newly saved project won't open before you import session data, something's very wrong. If it opens fine, but fails to open after you import session data, then something's wrong with either the audio data or plugins used in that project.
Good luck!
you wont have problems about hardware compatibiliy with pro tools with this build. and it will run flawlessly with much less.
your build is fine. i wil look for a GPU that can handle multiple monitors. my setup is 3 monitors.
about the ram, your motherboard with that cpu supports natively up to 2933mhz of ram speed. what you got is 3600mhz. it will work, but to actually get that 3600mhz speed you will need to overclock it. if you wont OC, look for other ones, that work arround 3000 or 3200 to save some money.
about the ssd, its is good, no doubt about it. but audio will not really benefit from the speed of that drive, and it is huge. i use my SSD m2 drive for software, and a regular HDD for storing the audio and long-term storage. you could use some of the m2 space for your current working session, if them are heavy. if you need to cut expenses, go with a 500gb m2 sdd and a 2tb hdd. you will have plenty m2ssd space for soft and more than a few sessions.
about the power supply, its more than what you will use. that machine will work with less than 600w (even with a kind of powerfull gpu). but its ok to over shoot. look for one that is arround 700-750w and you will be safe. 80+ gold its not a must, but a nice to have.
for thunderbolt, you will need something like this
if the computer will be seating in the same room, try and look for water cooling or silent cooling. if it is posible placing it in another room, go for it.
Just something that connects via usb that allows you to map a keyboard key to it. Something like this.
Yes, in my case the issue turned out to be DRM related (I believe). I use NordVPN and something about connecting to NordVPN was causing the issue. Deeply frustrating but reliably resolved by disconnecting from VPN before launching Pro Tools. Can recreate the issue by connecting to NordVPN again so definitely the issue for me. Hope this helps!

Hey, I mistakenly thought your audio interface had 1/4" outputs. It doesn't. I'm sorry for getting that wrong and linking you to the wrong cables.
So here's what you need:
Not really at a perceptible level, and the convenience means it's worth hooking up.
You'd be going for option 2, which requires a pair of TS-to-RCA cables such as these
Don't overthink it. And don't overspend. Just get something like this.

I have used USB 2.0, FW800, and USB 3.0 drives running both 5400 and 7200 rpms. The transfer protocol is much more important than the rotation speed. If you have USB 3.0, you are halfway to thunderbolt, and the other half won't make a difference. I can't say I've ever used an external SSD, but honestly, how much do you want to spend on external storage?
If it were me, I would get the drive I linked to, or a similar desktop version, and then buy a second, larger desktop version to do Time Machine backups of both the computer and the audio drive.
That might be the hard solution, but you can try to install SizeUp, it's a manager that lets you arrange windows with hotkeys and a lot of cool stuff. That way you can rearrange back the edit window in the visible part of your screen.
Or you can just look for it around the border of your screen, it's possibly still visible
I don't know that there is one. Take a look at this benchmark of high end CPU's and you'll see that you have to go quite a way down before you see an AMD chipset. Any reason in particular why you are looking at AMD?
will have to look when i get back to the studio to be sure, but i found the list of compatable computers and macbook pro from 2007 and later is on the list

latest drivers have been installed. uninstalled and reinstalled. but that is the driver for yosemite.
Using Rufus ( https://rufus.ie/ ), you can create installation media (ISO or USB), for almost all versions of Windows 10.
The Windows installers are legitimate Microsoft files, and as such you will need a valid license for whatever you are choosing to install. As long as you have a valid license for Windows 10, you should be fine installing previous versions, just watch for the Home/Pro distinction.
Using Rufus is mostly straightforward, but if you have issues , I may be able to help or just send you the 1909 ISO.
What specifically is happening when you try to import? While not advocated, H.264 should work fine assuming you are running a later version of PT on a reasonably fast machine. There are different flavors of H.264, so you may have luck re-converting the video to a less resource intensive profile. You can download Handbrake for free to convert your clips.
Here are a few tips to help get things running smoothly: use the x264 encoder at main or even baseline profile level 3, make low res (540p) and low bitrate (1mbps), use constant framerate, AAC audio codec is fine. You shouldn't have to cripple your video this much to get H.264 to work, but it's a starting point. Or convert to DNxHD as suggested :)
My first thought: Your old motherboard audio may have supported ASIO, and your new one does not. ASIO is a type of driver that utilizes your audio hardware at a low level, and Pro Tools needs it to run in windows. It will say "ASIO" in the "playback engine" option. Double check if there's an ASIO option avilable for you.

If not:

>I was told that reading and writing simultaneously is a major no no.
This is one of those things that you probably should do but don't have to do. With a high enough track count it matters. You can do the math if you want, run some sort of hard drive speed test on your drive to find out it's sustained average read/write speed, and then calculate for data throughput for your track count at a given bit depth & sample rate. So at 48kHz/24-bit, you are looking at 48,000 x 24 = 1152000 bits per second or ~ 1.1 Mbps for 1 mono track of 48k/24.
I've been doing some research on this as well and from what I can tell you can drop just about any newer GeForce card in a mac pro and be good, you just need to get the drivers for your specific OS - each OS version has it's own set, so be mindful of that (10.8.3 drivers are different from 10.8.3 etc)
The downside is that unless you use a mac specific card (like this guy), you lose your boot screen until the login window.
I notice on my machine, early 2009 MP also using the GT120, meters and plugin animations are choppy and annoying to look at. People have reported nice graphical performance boosts in pro tools by upgrading their video cards. I can't say for certain because I haven't tried it personally, but I'm pretty certain a new card would help your issue.
You need some sort of program running that will interpret your clicks in the way that you want, I use http://www.keyboardmaestro.com/
KM's interface makes sense to me in an intuitive way and has been able to accomplish anything I can think of to try to make it do. I'm pretty sure they do the free trial thing too.
you can't (legally) run MacOS as a vm on non-apple hardware, and the performance impact in modern mac os is pretty bad anyway. you would also have to deal with lack of GPU and poor audio performance. its not really a functional workaround for protools.
you have a few more practical options:
1 - embrace the change and become keyboard layout fluid. takes a little time and muscle memory training, but is completely portable.
2 - remap your macos modifiers to behave like windows. the easiest technical option, as these settings are build into keyboard preferences in macos.
3 - remap your windows modifiers to behave like macos. worst and least portable option, generally requires a third party application to modify the windows registry, a la sharpkeys
Download free MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert video. Download AVID DNX Codec from site.
First thing to try is converting the video.
http://www.squared5.com/ - this is a great free app to do it.
You’ll also want to download the Avid codecs so you can convert to DNxHD. http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en423319
It’s going to make the file much larger but since it’s uncompressed Pro Tools doesn’t have to decompress it on the fly. Which causes a lot of lag.
Yes! But on mobile at the moment. Will get back at you tomorrow.
It's tomorrow.
To get a basic understanding of what each codec is you got a nice article on Quora.
It's the same for video editors, they can choose to edit with H.264 frames in Premiere Pro if their machine is strong enough, so they can cut down on conversion time, but it might give trouble on less than optimal machines.
Our company converts all our incoming video files to 720p Apple Prores 422 proxy with MPEG Streamclip.
EDIT: goodmorning
Download 11.3.2 version for starters. They screwed up video engine in PT11 and it's a well known secret. Like Mecha_Shiva suggested, convert your video to DNX36 that is the only format that works the best I found
http://www.squared5.com that's a converting tool
As of PT 2020.03 you can import and playback some QT video (although I don't think the audio will come with it if you need the reference).
If you need to marry your mix back to the video (for approvals etc.), you could use a program like FFWorks or Shutter Encoder to rip out the original audio and drop in your mix.
If you feel like going down a rabbit hole, it sounds like a program like Spleeter might be able to help you out as well. I haven't used it myself, but people seem relatively impressed with it.
It looked like SoundFlower was out of date but they suggested LoopBack https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/. How would you suggest I go about setting this up? Where would I built an input that monitors LoopBack? So confused at the moment.
i solved the problem with voicemeeter on windows because it was a asio4all problem that would not play the audio codec that comes with the video so maybe try some alternatives for mac https://alternativeto.net/software/voicemeeter/?platform=mac
Hey all, did a quick search of the subreddit and din't see the Pro Tools Shortcuts app listed anywhere, but I'm a big fan and have used it for the past couple years to try to sharpen my shortcut knowledge. It's like a cross between a reference and a quiz. Here are links to the app in the Apple app store and Google Play. Enjoy!
Thanks for writing. I'm showing no shortage of users in Australia using the app, so that's curious. Does this link work?

I am using a Alienware laptop from 2015ish. I'm assuming I have the newest version of Pro Tools First since I only downloaded a few days ago.
Also what is ASIO and why do people keep talking about it?
Also thank you for responding.

Like I realize this isn't Thunderbolt, but would something like this help me out?
So, that being said, would you honestly even recommend it to others over something like the Korg nanoKONTROL2, since it would give you just as many faders?
