You seem to be aware that this sub is mostly for constructive criticism; so you're in the right mindset.
A reverberating but of advice on this sub is to get a circular polarizing lens filter if you haven't one already. They're inexpensive, but very useful given the subjects we're capturing. Cars have numerous reflective surfaces, throws off exposure, focus, and distracts the eyes. Get one which fits the diameter of your lense and play with it, you wont be sorry. A competent one can be had for $20 off Amazon.
Composition is important like another user said, and dont forget to use your zoom instead of physically moving closer to the subject; this will keep proportions consistent with reality.
I'm a Canon user as well; a very, VERY inexpensive but fun lense you can get is their simple little EF 50mm f/1.8 It's like $100 but fun to dick around with.
Shot this inside at Kindig-It's facility in Salt Lake City. Galaxies are huge (no pun intended) and I could hardly get enough light on it with the two main strobes. I used one 580 to fill in the grille.
Hell no, just go there and take the photos. The worst that can happen is they'll ask you to stop doing it, right?
Actually just two days ago I went to the Porsche dealership and took a few photos of a Carrera GT they had there. And I've taken photos there before, they never complained or anything.
Here's the article:

Though that was last years' version. He then added a new livery (which I designed, though he wanted it very similar to the previous one, heh), the turbofans on the front wheels, a new front bumper and splitter (can be seen here http://websta.me/p/790597368251909621_277950224) among some other things. But the specs in the Speedhunters article were the same this year, basically.
But, I filmed him putting the front end into a wall at the third round of the Swedish drift GP a couple of weeks ago, and while it was a very undramatic and not really hard hit, it was enough for him to write it off. He'll be back next year in an E46.
Anything else you wanna know, just ask ;)
A small spring drift session and meet. The weather wasn't ideal but it luckily it never rain. I'm still editing pictures but this is what I've done so far.

I just remembered I was subscribed to this subreddit and was looking through some posts... while this is a 11 day old post, I guess it might be helpful to share this link: http://www.scoop.it/t/automotive-photography-techniques
For nearly two years, I've curated something like 300+ links related to automotive shooting and editing. Hope this helps.
I use this for a fill/key light and sometimes to do some light painting and other creative stuff. Highly recommend it

You mean one of these things? when is the right time to use it?
This is the one I use, battery life is good and it's able to be mounted to a tripod if needed. Also comes with a remote which can be handy.
