I bought a refurbished Garmin Forerunner 235 on Amazon, looks like it's $230 right now but maybe Black Friday could get it under $200? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MATKIWO/ref=twister_B07DPGR44N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I used it for a Trifecta + two other OCRs and while I had to clean it pretty well after mud made the buttons hard to press, it's still working very well for me.

this or a refurbished fenix 3
I can recommend these: Caterpillar 17416
Caterpillar 17416 Herren Nylon-Handschuhe mit Nitrilbeschichtung https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00ADV6T9M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_2C7C77AYNX76X53KR0PP?psc=1
I use them for avoiding injuries on regular obstacles. For the grip relevant once (rope, bar,…)I go without.
This is what worked for me:
Go on amazon and buy some of these. I had cramps at every race but when I started drinking water with a tablet the day before and morning of race day I have not had a cramp since. My last cramp was late May 2018. Since then I have been through and Agoge, HH, 2 Sprints, 1 Super, 2 Beasts, 1 Ultra and SGX.
They work.

-Pack your bucket with a duplicate of EVERYTHING on you for your first lap. Even down to the same brands, this will ensure you know your gear and can swap out quickly.
-Don't spend longer than 10mins at transition. It is easy to convince yourself to quit.
-Bring medic scissors to cut off socks if you plan to remove them for foot repair.
-Use Darn Tough socks. Since I switched in may I have not had a single blister even in wet conditions. They are cheapest in the festival area depending on how many you buy.
-Walk uphill, run on the straights and downhills.
-Train long distances and do a mock transition mid way. You will figure out with time what to carry on you. The first time you will carry more than you need, and after a few runs like this you will know the minimum you need to bring to make it though and save energy by not carrying extra stuff.
-Pack gear in a race vest I got the Solomon adv skin 5 and 12. I took both but the 5 is perfect for Ultras. There is a huge difference in carrying your water in a camelpak and wearing your water in a vest.
-Remove your pack to shed weight before obstacle attempts.
Best bet is probably going to be a Groupon, although it is only for the afternoon times. You still have to pay insurance when you sign up so the cost will be higher then 99.
https://www.groupon.com/deals/gl-2018-reebok-spartan-race-national-race-entry
Groupon has the SoCal Sprint for $99 for the afternoon Saturday wave: https://www.groupon.com/deals/gl-2017-reebok-spartan-race-snow-summit-ski-resort
They had the LA Stadium Sprint, but those sell out fast.
Also, you can volunteer at Spartan events and get credit towards a same-day, next-day, or future race.

Here's the link for MapMyRun http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1839221144
Here's Alltrails https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/spartan-beast-socal-2017
I used an image overlay app and directly traced the route straight into MapMyRun route creator, so it's as accurate as can be compared to the published map. Even though I exported the GPX file to Alltrails and it has the same exact coordinate date, the elevation gain varies drastically. MapMyRun has the elevation gain at 2,603 ft, while AllTrails has it at 3,606 ft. Almost a 1,000 ft difference, so maybe theres just a programming error somewhere. If anyone uses other GPX utilities, feel free to download the GPX file I made and see what elevation gain it comes out to so that I can verify which app is the culprit. Hopefully its near 2606 or 3606 and not something dead smack in the middle like 3100!
Anyway, I hope this helps with the planning and stuff. Feel free to download and/or use either of the routes I made. And add me as a friend on MapMyRun!
Here's a bunch of them on Strava. Theres always some difference between peoples watches on Spartans, I don't know why, but its always more than a normal race would have.
Looks like it was right around 5 miles though.
I use a 1.5L Camden Gear pack (link below) and it has gone through 8 OCR events and a few road/trail races with me this year. It's currently $26.95 on Amazon. It fits well and is pretty light but still was large enough to carry all the nutrition I took onto the course in Killington for 8 hours without any issues. The pouches along the belt line are pretty convenient for gels. I probably should have done a better job of cleaning the zippers after muddy races as I started having issues with one side zipper after a BFX event earlier this year but that's less an issue with the pack than it is an issue of me being smart enough to keep it working correctly.
You can get the sandbell already filled from Hyperwear or from Rogue. That is the real deal and very durable. If you are an Amazon prime member you can even get the sandbell shipped 2nd day free - already filled!
I wore MadGrip Pro Palm gloves at my first Spartan Sprint about a month ago (Amazon link here). I didn't take them off for any obstacles. In between obstacles, I'd rub dirt on my gloves to keep them dry and grippy.
Personally, I think that they helped with obstacles like the rope climb, Hercules hoist, bucket brigade, and the plate drag. I failed the twister and the multi-rig obstacles, but that's because I didn't practice my grip strength beforehand, not because my grip slipped with the gloves on.
wait... back the train up... you just asked if you needed a shirt, agreed to make your child swim in 35 degree water, and wanted to make him suffer, but wana make sure his hands don't get cold...
looks around room
should go with mad grip gloves then lol unless you want something specific for warmth
These pants, a long sleeve tee-shirt, maybe a hoodie, and some long underwear if it's really cold.
I also ran it this year. I wore a light (32-degree) jacket over a long-sleeve compression shirt. I took the jacket off most of the time. I also got some fleece cycling pants but depending on the weather this year I may opt for shorts over leggings. I was much warmer than I planned once I started running. Thin gloves and hat are very handy though.
TBMPOY Men's 2 Pack Quick Dry Gym Sport Running Shorts with Zipper Pockets(03,navy+color blue,us L) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075N6WRLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4AXKBbFS264ZS
These worked well for me and are pretty cheap.
Last time i checked, it was 199 dollars per Module (Think they were called modules, not 100% sure). From the summary, it sounded interesting. But also sounded like content that is available already. I.e. Tim Ferris Podcast seems to go along the same lines, Tools of Titans for the summary. (Find your why, practice mindfulness, set goals etc.)
Again, this is from the summaries, but it seems like the content would be available from free sources already and the trifecta piece is not worth 200 bucks to me.

Definitely give your body rest and proper hydration/nutrients. If you have any of these symtoms of rhabdomyolysis (especially dark/brown urine), please seek medical attention. It is a life threatening condition if not properly treated.
>The “classic triad” of rhabdomyolysis symptoms are: muscle pain in the shoulders, thighs, or lower back; muscle weakness or trouble moving arms and legs; and dark red or brown urine or decreased urination
Knowing I might tear it up on barbed wire and get all filthy, I didn't want an expensive pack. I have run many races, including 3 beasts, and trained many hours with this cheap mubasel gear pack I got on amazon below. I've seen other people with them also. I've torn the mesh a bit on barbed wire, but otherwise it's holding up. Only complaints is that the mouthpiece does not come off. So you can clean almost all the tube with the right brush, but not the whole thing.
It is a PITA to have to take it off to reach anything inside the pack. I'd reconsider a vest, my buddy has a small one with 2 6oz or so flexible bottles up front and a couple very small pockets for mustard or small amounts of food. I'm thinking of switching.

Heard.
Look into the cable machine pulls. That might work for you.
I got something really similar to these
So far I have used a belt style behind the back bottle holder - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T17RN62/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It took some time to get used to it at first. I wore it too loose and the bottle bounced too much for my liking. I wear it tighter now and I don't really notice it anymore. It's got a section of bungy in the strap to allow it to stretch just a bit.
It does take some practice to reholster it on the fly, but with a little practice it's not too bad, but it does throw of your cadence for a few strides. It's got a little bungy loop that can curl over the spout of the bottle to make sure it doesn't fall out. This is the only thing I have ever used so I don't have much to compare to. The only obstacle I think it might get caught on would be the barb wire crawl. So sometimes I rotate the belt around so that the bottle is on the front for that one. Although in the last race, I didn't bother to, and it didn't snag anything. It's got two small compartments, one which I use to store the timing chip, and the other I typically fit a couple of GUs, some Liquid IV electrolyte satchels, salt tablets and a Z-bar. And it's got an additional bungy loop on the other side of the bottle that I use to secure a pair of gloves.
I would think having bottles mounted on the front would get in the way of some obstacles where you end up on your belly like the top of The Box or their version of the Irish Table (can't think of the Spartan name at the moment), but since many people go with this setup, it must not be much of an issue.
Interestingly, I was considering going to a hydration bladder, but given what some on here have said that they allow filling bottles at the aid stations but not bladders, that has me reconsidering.
There is certainly evidence (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Michael_Sperling3/publication/227593483_The_Ketogenic_Diet_for_Intractable_Epilepsy_in_Adults_Preliminary_Results/links/56e62ceb08aedb4cc8ae9613.pdf) that a ketogenic diet can aid in improving epileptic adults. A well formulated ketogenic diet can be both satisfying and enjoyable. Lethargic symptoms typically come from a lack of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium). When I don't supplement electrolytes, I get lethargic. When I do, I feel great.
I just ran my first Sprint wearing glasses, using these straps by Moko off of Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077NV1N2J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Worked great! Never slipped from my head once. I was very happy.
Salomon Speedcross trail running shoes
Recently did the Super 10k in them and I was glad I had them. You won't be disappointed.
For me spartan is all about grip, so besides bar hangs and money bars (which might be difficult while driving 😉) I usually do two things to prepare: A) work with my Powerball Autostart (Powerball Autostart, gyroskopischer Handtrainer inkl. Aufziehmechanik, transparent-grau, das Original von Kernpower https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0063Z2P3Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_J1E5EV75MZEQ46W3VSQA): Great for endurance and strength B) improve my mental coordination of my hands and fingers, especially of my left hand. This can be as simple as doing daily tasks with my non dominant hand or rotating a pen up and down between my fingers. Rational: you need a strong strong neurological link to utilize you full potential of you muscular tissue (goes btw for all muscle groups)
Hope this helps! Aroo and safe driving!
I took a stab at matching this course up to an actual map: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2096698039
Looks like close to 9 miles, and 1500+ ft of climbs. Biggest hill comes ~6.5 miles in. And the back-to-back triple threat of bucket carry (on a hill), big uphill & downhill trailrun, and then sandbag carry (also on a hill?) is going to make our legs feel pretty special. AROO!
I’ve done about 30-35 races with the Apple Watch and haven’t had any issues. However, the last 25-30 were with a waterproof case (https://smile.amazon.com/Waterproof-Shockproof-Resistant-360°Protective-Protector/dp/B07T6DWTCX/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?crid=29M9VRSVPVRVO&dchild=1&keywords=waterproof+apple+watch+case+44mm&qid=1634355673&sprefix=waterproof+appl&sr=8-10). It does a great job of protecting the outside from impact and water/mud.
I actually found this one.

This is what I use on my trail runs but I have not tested it for a half marathon distance. But so far very lightweight and comfy and holds everything that I need it to.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07H264MS3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Y7TY57H32FTYFB46HR7C
I’ve also used these, which worked great but are super expensive for what they are. Yellow mustard seems to work just as well for me.
Remember though, noting will fix undertrained legs. This year was super tough with all those early climbs. That can be hard right from the get-go if everyone isn’t warmed up yet. It was also pretty chilly for the morning starts and I know in those conditions it usually takes me 30-40 minutes to be fully warmed up. By then we’d already had like 800 feet of climbing!

I use this cheap 2liter backpack style hydration pack - https://www.amazon.com/TETON-Sports-TrailRunner-Hydration-Backpack/dp/B00P7MYS6I
I prefer the backpack style, it doesn't get in the way so much crawling or going over walls. I paid less for the backpack one then I did for the Nathan Belt I use for regular running. It does take a little getting use to the bite valve.
In 2019, I drained it, in addition to taking water at each station and still got cramps. The heat and sun exposure are brutal there. I averaged 4:30 the two times I've run there.
I started with this book about a year before I ever heard of Spartan: Get Strong
It's a sixteen week progressive calisthenics program that's great for overall strength and overhead work. The kindle book is ten bucks, and the only other thing you need is a pull-up bar.
I'm a big fan of the Zensah for high knee compression and Injinji for toe socks. For a Spartan, just because of the rope climb and I do S-Wrap, I'd probably use at minimum something like these. The Zensah can get expensive though at ~$45 for an socks and ~$35 for a sleeve.
Mudgears are very thick from what I'm told, which I'm not a huge fan of because they get hot. I live in Florida, so staying cool is mandatory.
I think you're in the UK, but I got a great one on amazon for $12.99 shipped. Super comfortable and a lot of features. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUP9OIS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

PM me if you need some friends there. I am meeting a buddy from highschool and we're doing the Sunday sprint. 28/m/USA s.

I ran the Palmerton Super this year with my Apple Watch 4. I know it is waterproof, but I was afraid of rocks and mud getting to it. So I bought a case on Amazon that was completely sealed and waterproof so that I could still use my watch but have it protected as I got through the course. Worked like a charm! And I’ll be using the same band to run a sprint in about a week.

I ran the Virginia Super this year the first time with the Salomon trail shoes (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017SQWUKG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and yeah they were amazing. My friend came and she ran in just an old beat up pair of shoes that were pretty much ground flat on the bottom.
The difference is extremely noticeable on any obstacle or area packed with mud, as I could just run downhill on an area where she (and many others) had to hesitate heavily or slip. Everything is doable, and I've also done a beast and super in old shoes, but it's a world of difference with real trail shoes.
I used this with good results: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZAKOJK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That actually ships to Canada, just might buy that
I've had it from Spartan races and general trail running, I wear high socks and such, but the poison ivy/sumac oil spreads easy so I started to clean up afterwards with this stuff:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J0U0C0O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and it seems to help. I tried putting preventative lotions on, but I sweat them off.
I didn't wear any for the ~50 OCR events I did in 2016 and 2017 but I've started wearing these (https://www.amazon.com/UpNorth-Polyester-Textured-Nitrile-Construction/dp/B06X6G7LD3/) this year. For me, it's less for grip than for hand protection. Sure they help with wet ropes and walls but I had more than few instances of major skin peeling on my fingers after some races last year and that's stopped after wearing gloves for the races.
I ran a sprint with a camera. Did not use a gopro though. The chest rigs and the head mounts of the go pro are not ideal (chest will get in the way of burpees and crawls, gopro head mount stands up from your head and might collide with multi-rig or similar.)
I have a Sony HDR AS-50 with the Sony head mount system
According to reviews at the time I bought the camera Sony has pulled ahead of GoPro and now delivers better camera quality at a lower price.
The camera survived the race well. It got slightly misaligned (headband must have twisted) but I could easily fix that in post.
I did the Paris Sprint in March and it was colder than this (about 5C/41F) with rain and even snow after that. I was just fine using a "Nike Pro Cool" long sleeves shirt and another Nike Pro (short sleeves) on top of that. Same for the legs, I used Nike pants (also DriFit). Yeah, I like Nike gear :)
I like Nike's "DriFit" material (I'm sure other brands have similar fabric) because, like the name says, they dry quickly. If you wear something like cotton, it'll retain all the water and that will get you cold (especially with the wind chill factor).
I didn't need any other layer because honestly, once warmed-up and running, I just wasn't cold. The only time I was cold was when I had to do my penalty Burpees with my hands directly in contact with the snow.
Hope that helps!
I second the glass cover although I didn't go with tempered glass option.
I went with this: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Protector-LiQuidSkin-Coverage-Anti-Bubble/dp/B00SXHFVA6
It's still on my watch after putting it on in October 2016. I may change it out eventually.
Bought this last summer and used it for 2 races. I also use it to carry multivitamins when I travel overnight or longer. It might be overkill but it definitely works, just don't overpack cause it can be a nightmare to get those pills out when you need them most.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G2SCML4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Weight vest to 'ruck'?
Rucking usually involves a ruck sack/ back pack, thus the name, from my experience.
I have both, and dog walk with both. A weight vest, imho is preferable if adding in running or doing additional exercises, while the ruck sack is superior for rucking (weight bearing/load carrying).
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OJDBWAQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and
YMMV
I'm currently using this one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0WRMYZ/
I like having the slightly larger 2L bladder and the space for food. As for keeping the liquids cool, this one does have some insulation in the bladder compartment but if I'm worried about that I just put ice cubes into the bladder.
I just used regular sandbags and triple bagged them.
Bought this one for a race last year and it was great. Got it snagged on the barbwire crawl, but it didn't rip apart or fray. Cleaned up great and kept me hydrated. The mouthpiece was kinda a pain, but there are replacements for those.
Look at the Altra Lone Peak. The Toe Box is VERY wide. They are really designed for Ultra Trail Marathons, but I have seen a lot of people wear them in OCR. I wore these for 20 hours during the SISU Iron. They are great. Really comfortable.
I would also add, bring electrolyte salt tablets with you to prevent leg cramps and guu packets/food in your running belt. Not so much of an issue in a Sprint since it's a short distance, but more of a concern in a longer race like Super or Beast. I like to set an automatic alarm timer on my Garmin to beep every 45 minutes to feed myself 200 calories and take 1 salt tablet. Never had cramps because of this strategy!

I used Band-Aid Blister Bandages, and they worked great during my race: https://www.amazon.com/Band-Aid-Advanced-Protection-Adhesive-Bandages/dp/B01EMYZJ64/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1490880004&sr=8-5&keywords=band+aid+blister
I had a blister from a 5K I did in 98 degree humid weather, three days before my race. These protected it and made the discomfort minimal.
I ran the Killington Beast last year in these and cannot recommend them highly enough! Looks like Merrell stopped making them (I have no idea why)

I am a 5'5" and bought the following Propper Men's Summerweight Tactical Pant, Black, 32 x 30 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WBXFI88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ae.BybTN57V2D It appears these run short so it might be a good fit. I will keep you posted once I get them.
I've been using this one since March. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KSMVACW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's survived 10 races, both on and off road, and plenty of training runs. I've been really happy with it. Plenty of room for nutrition and other stuff that ends up coming out on the course and for me the 1.5L bladder has been a great size (note, I tend to drink a lot on the course...especially on hot days).
If you bring your phone definitely put in a water proof case. I used this one in the Pala Beast and sprint and had zero issues
Universal Waterproof Case, JOTO CellPhone Dry Bag Pouch for Apple iPhone 6S 6,6S Plus,7 SE 5S, Samsung Galaxy S7, S6 Note 7 5, HTC LG Sony Nokia Motorola up to 6.0" diagonal -Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LBK7OSY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_iAabyb5R9GCEP
What brand/kind? example IMO when OCR's started becoming a thing i would have to say there were the unofficial gloves :

I also buy Inov-8 shoes that are super snug, so there's no movement in them at all. Less movement=less friction= less blisters.
I have worn Compressionz shorts for several events this season (BF, TM, WD, RM) and really like them. They're relatively inexpensive, too. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJ1ITZI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I started with this one and use it for simple trail runs, I changed to (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KSMVACW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) since it has some easy to get to side pockets.
I wear Brooks Trail Runners with Gore-Tex! They have held up well to training and multiple post-race washes.
For compression shirt I have this Russell Athletic compression shirt! Any shorts will do as long as they have a good drawstring. Tie them tight so they don't fall down when muddy/wet.
I've been using this one this year (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KSMVACW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It's gone through six Spartans and one BFX and has held up pretty well.
Generally gloves are unnecessary at a race. If it's cold or the terrain is garbage, then maybe. However, gloves are basically required at HH and HH12HR. I'd recommend Mechanix gloves like these https://www.amazon.com/Mechanix-Wear-Tactical-Original-Covert/dp/B0001VNZZU
I decided to go with an off brand action pro x. Total cost with extra batteries and a 64 gig memory card was $110. I will use iMovie for editing. I will test it this week and report my experience.

I got this and it didn't leak at all. I have a friend who had the exact opposite happen to her.

Ok, I'm interested in buying these. But Jesus Christ, there's like 50 different types. Look at these goddamn beasts:
