Thanks for the reply. I bought this one off Amazon so I'll return it and get this Easycap UTV007.
I am reading back through the original email I received from Timur and it says that Vcam2 should be installed already with the kernel. It also says I can manually install it with the apk. Why would I need to if it comes preinstalled? I'm wondering if it isn't installed on my Nexus7. I tried to download the apk but the file link to download his kernel/vcam2 apk has been disabled (probably only works for a short period of time - it's been a year).

You need to lower the voltage, my tablet started doing the same thing until i used this for power and lowered the voltage to ~4.2v. Using the voltage adjustment knob on the regulator i just turned the voltage down from 5v slowly until the tablet stopped saying it was charging when there was nothing plugged into the micro usb port.
So unfortunately, the mic did not work for me.
Just a quick heads up, I did not buy the MIC that you directly linked as I was too excited to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive from China.
Instead, I ended up buying THIS one instead. It looked like the exact same one you linked on eBay.
One interesting point though: when I hooked the MIC up to my hub, USB Devices under PowerEventManager definitely recognized it. Here is a link to that image.
Does USB Devices list your MIC as "AK5371"?
Hey my apologize,
What I mean is, I want to use something like THIS essentially, so one end will go to the headunit that is already in my car acting as an AMP and the other end, I'll simply plug in a cheap microphone for simple Google Now commands.
Whilst at the same time, have an OTG cable plugged in for power and plugging in USB devices.
Is this something that is possible or do I have to output sound through USB into a DAC and then output DAC to headunit?
Sorry if I'm still being confusing, I can draw a diagram on MS Paint if need be.
The way kevdav described it, the tablet will still go to sleep when you cut ignition and use very low power so the draw on your car battery should be very low.
I removed the battery from the tablet Friday. The car is powering the tablet as expected, but my tablet will not go to sleep when I cut ignition. The only way for me to trigger sleep mode is to physically unplug the OTG cable from the tablet.
This may be caused by the cheap power converter I'm using to power the OTG port. Some other reading I've done here suggests it may be caused by too much voltage coming from one of the power converters.
I'm using this converter for powering the tablet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016XI9BJS
I'm using this one to power the OTG port: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3DQRY0
No Idea if this is a help for you but Video Grabbers with UTV007 chip (VID&PID [1B71:3002]) work best on Android. I am not familiar with your Grabber and never seen this VID&PID before, may be there is an incompatibility with vcam? You could try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easycap.viewer or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easycap.viewer.carrear
if you don't want to buy another grabber.
Other Grabbers: STK1160 05E1:0408 could work but sometime instable. Easycap UVC 18EC:5850: Grabber with uvc method, works differently than all the grabbers listed before. SMI Grabber Device 1C88:0007 not compatible
I'd suggest to use Car Launcher Pro launcher app. It's a complete all-in-one solution because it works as a homescreen, shows travel speed and title of the media playing. You can toggle a screensaver with dark background and current time so it saves the battery and doesn't disturb you while driving at night or in dark environment. Also you don't need any custom media controls - the play/pause, prev, next controls and volume bar is available instantly in the screen.
Try using soundabout, if there are any problems in your configuration it will try force the sound from the N7 to your head unit.
I think the free version will work for what you want, but I think there is a is a free trail for the premium version you can try anyway
