uBlock is an abandoned, inferior fork. You should switch to uBlock Origin by the original developer which has tons of new features and is still in active development.
Fixed in uBlock Origin 1.4.0 (which is in release candidate phase): Cosmetic filter fails to hide element.
Issue was that sometimes uBO's injected CSS rules were overriden by a page's own CSS rules. Solution was to increase the specificity of uBO's own CSS rules to ensure they override the page's own CSS rules.
uBlock's been riding the drama llama. You can read Chris's(uBlock) take on the state of affairs here. Gorhill (uBlock Origin) has said some things in the readme of his github here. Some people seem very invested in denouncing one as part of justifying their decision to use the other. I think it's all a massive waste of time.
Personally I think that if all you want to do is install uBlock and let it do its magic with auto-updating subscriptions, you could be using literally any version that's been put out by any author in the past several months. There have been some bugfixes and interface improvements since then but uBlock was perfectly able to serve a "set and forget" user before it split.
I use uBlock because I think it's silly that uBlock Origin needs to exist in the first place, and the name just serves as a constant reminder that the devs can't get on the same page and stop hosting competing versions of the same product. But the choice is about as potent as flipping a coin or picking it based on which icon you like better. (There's currently a difference in functionality in that per-site switches are removed from uBlock, but honestly unless you're able to find out what that is and want to use it on your own, it doesn't matter one bit, it's a tool for advanced users.)
It seems that the wording is still not appropriate.
gorhill cites your FAQ as an example of misinformation implying that uBlock Orgin is a lesser branch of uBlock.
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock
I don't quite see it, but you might want to try rewriting again . . . :/
Maybe explicitly say that they are equal or don't refer to uBlock Origin as a "personal fork."
Just call it a "second branch." Use more neutral language.
I've never seen an ad on youtube and I'm using uBlock Origin.
Disconnect yourself from youtube's ad server - "doubleclick.net" with uBlock Origin's dynamic filtering. https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide
If ads slip through that, then check which servers you are connected to. Blacklist any suspicious domains from connecting.
It can, through Dynamic Filtering (aka advanced mode) which you'll first need to toggle in preferences. Be sure to read these https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering
If you're looking for more granular control over what you block, I suggest having a look at uMatrix (from the same developer) instead. https://github.com/gorhill/uMatrix/
It seems that Google's ad platform put in a new system to evade adblock by randomizing ids. Give it a few days and someone will likely create a rule to kill em again. I'm here because I was seeing ads on Dictionary.com. The massive "PLAY NOW" button on top was pretty jarring considering I haven't seen an ad in months.

Nice one, all the filters block something. Exclusion filters unblock, however it can be said that they block blocking. So, this signs specify which elements to block.
I know your comment is 4 months old, but I wanted to correct this for posterity.
To get on the acceptable ads list, you have to meet the Acceptable ads rules about placement, size, content etc, and submit a request for review. After passing review, your site is added to the whitelist.
If your ads receive more than 10 million impressions per month on adblock-enabled browsers, there is an additional fee for "maintaining the list", as a percentage of the ad revenue you make from adblock plus users. According to adblockplus.org, roughly 10% of the sites on the whitelist pay a fee. Regardless of a fee, everyone has to abide by the acceptable ads rules.
So by using the 'acceptable ads list', you are supporting:
If you find sites on the whitelist that you think do not belong there, they have a forum where the community reviews it together and makes the decision.
Next version of uBlock Origin will be helpful for such cases: the element picker will now also offer to block whatever background images is found where you click.
I tried it with your case, and it worked.
There is nothing I can do with this, as I can't trial/error anything to figure a fix.
My first move would be to use uBO's own logger, and try to unblock/unallow whatever seem like worth trying to unblock/unallow, and see the result.
> Right under the pronounciation there's a toggle for phonetic spelling or IPA, if you click on it it's supposed to switch between the two.
You block facebook.net
? Unblocking this un-broke the widget.
I used the technique detailed in this tutorial -- finally tried an allow
rule for facebook.net
and that worked.
Yes, it's ok. However:
> [...] the more filter lists one adds, the higher the probability of breakage. Quality varies. Some filter lists could contains broad filter exceptions which defeat other block filters.
This applies to all filter lists, not only the ones listed on that page.
Blocking wise yes, if not better: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#blocking. The only down side I can think of is that you won't have Disconnect's "Private Search" but you can just use duckduckgo instead.
Edit: never mind it's a seperate extension.
Please keep in mind that non-intrusive ads does not equal non-harmful ads. Sites are still susceptible to malvertising and even a 1x1 pixel image can still be used to track you around the web. Also, what's acceptable or not is highly subjective; I've personally yet to find a single example of an ad that fits my own criteria for an acceptable ad. I'd like to quote the uBlock manifesto.
>the "Acceptable Ads" marketing campaign is really the business plan of a for-profit entity
I suggest you whitelist sites individually at your own discretion rather than leaving it for the highest bidder to decide what's "acceptable" or not.

there's nothing like ublock, there's one that works systemwide admuncher or something like that, but if you are in a limited enviroment I don't know if you'll be able to install it at all. can you run portable apps? portable opera chrome etc could be a better option.

First of all, try disabling AdNauseam and other extensions as well. Any other extension may use a whitelist or tamper with something you don't know about.
Open the logger on a video that plays an ad and post a screenshot of the entire session here. Take note of the time the ad started to play. (Left column in the logger.)
You'll have to turn on dynamic filtering in order to block youtube ads. Check out the quick guide here. I've been working through my understanding of it myself for just this purpose, but even simply enabling it blocks the youtube ads.
When you have enabled dynamic filtering by clicking that you are an advanced user in the "options" for the extension, navigate to a youtube video and click the uBlock button.
You should see that "doubleclick.net" is being listed in a panel that looks like this. It will probably already have a small red rectangle at the left of it and have a little minus sign in the far right column, meaning that it was already blocked. But if you want to be extra sure, you can hover over the minus sign in the far right column (the "local" column) and click the red box that appears when you hover to create a rule that will always block that url when you are on the youtube page. That's youtube's main advertising url so it should block all the ads.
At least, it has been working for me since I turned on dynamic filtering!
(edited for some dodgy location phrasing)
Similar issue - https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues/2036 so this rule should resolve problem:

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't log on to Reddit for a long period of time.
Anyway, you need the latest version of uBlock Origin - 1.9.0 or above. The author of uBlock Origin added a CSP to block the PH WebSocket workaround. However, I not sure when the author of uBlock Origin will update the extension in the Opera extensions store/repository.
This? Otherwise...
I've not been successful in doing this but maybe you could try the following for yourself:
1. Activate "I am an advanced user" in the settings.
2. Add www.youtube.com * * allow
in a new line in "My rules".
3. Delete browser cache and reload YouTube.
Maybe it works for you.
Otherwise you could try this which is not what you want but maybe you can make use of it anyways: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/How-to-whitelist-a-web-site#a-youtube-channel
FYI: AFAIK the ads at the bottom of the video make the content creators a lot of money. Without them they get way less.
I get the same issue when using "Fanboy’s Annoyance List" which by the way contains "Fanboy’s Social Blocking List".
The logger can be of help in such cases.
The issue seems to be a blocked network request and not a hidden div. Try this exception filter: @@-social_$domain=facebook.com,image
Put it into "My Filters", clear your browser cache and see if it works for you. Though there is a very small risk it might one day allow an ad through. I don't have a Facebook account so I don't know how they serve ads but if they use JavaScript like most sites you won't run into any issues since the above filter will only allow certain images.
I already reported it to the maintainers so it should get fixed for everyone.
You're getting some cheap Karma here. :>
It seems however that gorhill has figured out a solution: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/commit/cf9c7af428f125e6f8b0a3ab512c1e4550a26ec0
Just got to wait for the update.
Please don't use SpyHunter. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/550005/spyhunter-vs-malwarebytes-vs-iobit/#entry3491488 Quote: >Those security vendors which have tried in the past received threats of legal action for attempting to do so or agreed to legal settlements as a result of litigation brought forth by Enigma Software.
They are suing companies who rightfully identify it as a dubious program (malware in my opinion).
See also the other link Gorhill provides: https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/enigmasoftware.com
I can't think of one reason why an adblock would want to access my history.... Seems really fishy, I won't re-enable until this has been clarified.. In the meantime I'll rely on https://www.eff.org/privacybadger .
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Blocking-mode
Very easy mode if you just don't want to see ads. Easy mode is the standard configuration and probably the best for most users.
Less website breakage: Uncheck filter lists.
More protection: Check filter lists (and use medium/hard mode if you're OK with fixing broken sites). I can especially recommend:
The Malware section if you want to block some malware serving sites.
"Fanboy’s Annoyance List" if you want to get rid of stuff that's annoying but basically aren't ads.
The "Region" section if you're not from the US/UK.
Put this filter in "My rules" in the uBlock settings (might have to enable "I am an advanced user"):
www.forbes.com forbes.com * allow It will unblock everything from forbes.com while you're on www.forbes.com and they won't be able to detect you using uBlock anymore. Reload the site if it doesn't work right away.
How I created the rule:
Quick guide about this feature: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide
http://www.ebates.com/whitelist/ebates-cash-back-shopping.txt
About first 10 filter entries containing $document
have no support.
The rest should work. Their list disables the most common trackers on all sites. Why don't you just disable your blocker and change your nick to your real name and address?
I can't find any filter list which outright blocks all of cloudfront.net
.
If a specific filter breaks a specific site, report to the filter list maintainers.
To find out what filter from which filter lists blocks what network request, use the logger: <https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/The-logger> (that works for uBlock Origin).
I get the site not loading while on Firefox. There is something in the site script which loops with no end.
For now I find that disabling cosmetic filtering on the site works, I will look more into this later.
Edit:
I find that the following filters fix the issue:
marketwatch.com#@##ad_DisplayAd1 marketwatch.com#@##ad_DisplayAd2 marketwatch.com#@#.advertisement
I added them to the uBlock filters -- unbreak filter list.
Fixed with <https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/commit/adc84350e3a96f7653d2e73f817478749ec393dc>.
This gets rid of the scammy 3rd-party ads, but this does not remove the 1st-party warning at the top, I consider this to be a fair message by the site. The added filter works only for Firefox, due to Chromium limitation (see inline script tag filtering Caveats).
Woa... I would open the logger to see what is going on. Some pages will constantly perform network requests in the background, but 9 millions overnight is way above what I have ever seen.
Documentation? eg chrisaljoudi https://github.com/chrisaljoudi/uBlock/wiki/Quick-guide:-popup-user-interface More from gorhill's uBlockOriginal https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide
Thanks! I found this guide to dynamic filtering. One of its examples says:
> Someone found out Boldchat site was broken when using uBlock. The content of the dynamic filtering pane makes it clear that there is a static filter somewhere blocking network requests to boldchat.com. Turned out there was static filter boldchat.com in "Peter Lowe's Ad Server" list.
So it sounds like they had to search through the static filtering rules to find the particular one affecting boldchat.com. I was hoping for a pop-up list of which static rules are affecting the page. Still, dynamic filtering looks useful.
About the required permissions.

"Just to clear up misunderstanding: I will keep both the Chromium/Firefox working fine. I am not as familiar with the Firefox API as I am with the Chrome API, but nothing which I can't take on in the longer term, the same way I did not know anything about the Chrome API when I started HTTPSB. If anything, uMatrix on Firefox will be a good exercise in dealing with the intricacies of the Firefox API." —Gorhill
"I will do my best to submit pull requests for things which are important -- i.e. bugs really.
I think people should give a try to the official repo (uBlock, not uBlock0). I think Chris has a better sense of good UI than I do, I have to admit I kind of like most of the changes he made already. It has been difficult to let go after working so long on a project, but I had to do it, and though I have been conflicted in the past few days about the new ownership, it's settling for me -- I now feel optimistic about the outlook of uBlock under the new ownership." —Gorhill
It's an add-on or extension for specific browsers (running under Android). With Firefox, for example, you can get it from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/android/addon/ublock-origin/ or for Opera: https://addons.opera.com/en-gb/extensions/details/ublock/
You need to also have the Greasemonkey script installed for Anti-Adblock Killer | Reek to work:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/735-anti-adblock-killer-reek
Doesn't seem to fix that particular site, but it does fix others . . .
Edit: I have fixed this particular site with uBlock on Safari by manually enabling everything from www.hogarmania.com by clicking the plus sign by it in the side panel (Advanced User Mode On).
Answering myself. I found the solution in adblock plus forums. Turns out it is enough to block another non-changing element
> www.facebook.com###pagelet_growth_expanding_cta
But I'd still like to know, for future use, how to do a wildcard filter of the kind illustrated in OP.
Hi,
the reason I was hoping this could be done in uBlock, is because ABP has a filter, although I'm not sure how/if it would work in uBlock:

Disable Flash in your browser and disable JavaScript on all pages with uBO dynamic filtering or use uMatrix/NoScript/ScriptSafe. Tried the uBlock websocket extension? (Only needed if you use a Chromium browser.) How are you sure it's not malware/scummy ISP injected ads/VPN/Proxy/browser extensions? Checked the logger to see where these popups come from?
Tried to add this in My Rules pane?
no-popups: * true
Can't really troubleshoot unless you give some example sites where you see this.
uBlock & uBlock Origin block more than just ads, they also block trackers and analytics by default. Open the logger to find out what it blocks.
> I just wanted to check out the ublock website
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock - this is the site of the developer
ublock.org is not official site and never was
> Firefox tells me that the connection isn't save and that the owner didn't configure it properly.
Thats because "the owner" abandoned that fork about a year, or smth like that, ago. And he hasn't buy a certificate for https, that is why your browser warns you, certificate is outdated.
There is a scriptlet in uBO which can be injected to take care of these overlays:
example.com##script:inject(overlay-buster.js)
It tries to detect and remove overlays which cover the whole page. Replace example.com
with the hostname of the site on which the nuisance overlays occur.
Try ||zoho.com$domain=mail.google.com
, ||zohostatic.com$domain=mail.google.com
.
>I found this wiki page. But can't figure it out. Can enyone help me?
Inline filtering is for different things. Check out the logger and element picker.
So you used the "Reset to default settings" button? If yes you should probably report it like /u/synthead said.
Edit: Or you could post a screenshot of the logger here so we might be able to see what blocks the images.
Yes. The most straight-forward way is probably to use the Element picker but you can also use Dynamic filtering.
Firstly, make sure you are using uBlock Origin and not the now-obsolete uBlock.
Then look into the No popups option. If you are on a Chromium-based browser, make sure to read the caveats as well.
as for google instant you can disable it in googles search preferences but maybe i am the wrong guy for you
since you use firefox it probably would be more appropriate to use uBlock Origin from the mozilla add ons page which is under active development. maybe you can ask the guys at https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues for help
good luck! :)
So you don't have any other extensions installed? Then download this:
http://www.abelhadigital.com/hostsman
Start it as admin. As sources select "Cameleon", "MVPS" and those that say "ad". Then run an "update". It will download some files and afterwards you might need to restart your computer. Then hopefully you won't get any ads anymore. If you still get ads you might want to try another browser (Firefox instead of Chrome or vice versa). Otherwise I don't know either.
> Those failed to be hidden elements are usually generated via javascript. I think that's the core of the issue.
That implies a pretty serious bug in uBlock. Do you have any links regarding that? The closest thing I could find is https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues/390
There are 2 types of filters: network and cosmetic.
Network filters prevent browser to do a request and therefore resources are not being loaded.
Cosmetic rules:
>Sometimes you will find advertisements that can't be blocked because they are embedded as text in the web page itself. You need to download the web page so you will necessarily download the advertisements. All you can do here is to hide the advertisement so you don't need to see it. That's what element hiding is meant for.
Sometimes element picker of uBO offers both kind of filters - choose Net filter in that case.
edit: also check out the logger, you can filter entries for images, |image gif|
for instance, and block them with UI.
Since version 1.2.0 you can block inline scripts but only in Firefox. You can also use dynamic URL filtering.
Yes. From the popup menu, click the eyedropper (pipette) icon. This looks roughly the same in both uBlock and uBlock Origin.
I also suggest you read the wiki.
>What do you do when elements are loaded into a page with randomized names? How do you block something when an element entry is >###facebook.slider-8Ag7bF4Rr6IJm2Tp >and the code at the end gets randomized not only for every page on the site, but also each time that page is refreshed?
You do this:
<Domain>##div[id^="facebook-slider-"]
That is explained in the wiki.
Obviously, change div and id to match your case.
You should look in the logger what is blocked by which list then can whitelist the element or disable the filter list.
I think the best way would be to add a company filter list (web/smb server). In which you can add whitelist or blacklist rules for all your users.
I don't know if there is a easy way to add this via GPO. (I don't think it would be a good idea to deploy a changed .xpi where the list is added in \assets\ublock\filter-lists.json)
You could give you users a subscribe link which adds you list to there uBlock installations. https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Filter-lists-from-around-the-web
I had the same dilemma when trying to figure out which to install today. I finally found an answer here:
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues/38#issuecomment-96618444
"Main reason I published on AMO is because a feature which I think is important was removed from uBlock (per-site switches). That both versions diverged significantly enough so soon is not in my control."
Did you click Save and then Send when you added the rules? (That will save it permanently.)
Otherwise open the network monitor. Sort by file. Watch a video until an ad starts to play, then pause and see if you can find the suspect file that might be the ad. Check the domain on the suspected file and try to block that one as well. Could be your ISP or DNS provider that injects ads. Could also be another malicious 3rd party or another browser extension. Edit: But on another note, that shouldn't be possible with https unless you use an extension developed by google.
