It's also against VT law/executive order (unless there's a "sneeze guard"):
>Employees must wear face coverings over their nose and mouth when in the presence of others. In the case of retail cashiers, a translucent shield or “sneeze guard” is acceptable in lieu of a mask if the employee works alone and does not interact with customers outside the work station.
If there's no shield, does someone want to report this business to the state for non-compliance? There are a couple questions I can't answer.
(edited due to sneeze guard exclusion)
Look up 3M's Frost King Plastic Window covers. In the old North end most of the houses have VERY old windows. If they are not modern dual pane and insulated they might as well be holes in the wall. This plastic shrink wrap seals drafts and creates the same insulation layer of air that is created by a modern double pane window. I was renting an apartment in an old farm house last winter and covering the 6 windows with this stuff cut my bill in half. Just need a heat gun, or decent blow dryer with a hot setting for installation. A little goo-be-gon gets rid of any residue when you remove them.
Edit: When they are properly installed there is no reduction to visibility through the windows either.
Edit2: One more piece of advise. Listen to your furnace (not sure what you heat with). Note how much time it spends running and how much time it spends idling. In a well insulated building a furnace should be idle more often than it runs.
I found these on amazon, but I know for sure lowe's sells them. The indoor ones should be easier to install, but the outdoor ones are not visible from inside.
Have any interest in adopting a cat?
They make rodent deterrents that you plug in to the wall. They’ve been super effective with chipmunks and mice at my in-laws over the years. Kind of like this: GADINO Pest Repeller - Indoor Rodent Repellent - Pest Control Plug in for Mice, Cockroaches, Rats, Bugs, Spiders, Ant, Rodents, and Insects - 6 Packs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08WWP1XSR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KAZS6S3DW5MRGP78F5ZE
The information that is legally pertinent is at the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) (ACCD.vermont.gov)
The part that pertains to your situation is located here
>"All businesses and non-profit and government entities shall encourage and facilitate telework among those employees with the capacity to work remotely when practical without impeding productivity. Employers shall accommodate the needs of high risk individuals, those workers who may have child care needs which cannot be met due to the closure of schools or child care facilities for reasons relating to COVID-19 and those individuals with concerns about personal health circumstances."
I believe your situation meets "...those individuals with concerns..." portion.
This is currently the law in Vermont by order of the governor.
If your employer causes you any issues there is a tool to report their non-compliance with the law located here
Best of luck and I hope you and your family are healthy!
Best way to prepare for your hike is by quarantining for 14 days.
Edit: I just did a google search and discovered there are 1,184 trails in Connecticut that you could hike instead of driving across state lines during a pandemic!
I'll do bullet points:
My favorite hike in the entire Dorset/Rupert/Pawlet/Wells/Danby/Wallingford area is Haystack Mountain (a little more info here).
The closest ski areas to you are probably going to be Pico and Okemo with Pico being the better of the two, in my opinion.
Check out the Rutland Farmer's Market in the Walmart parking lot on Saturdays.
Keep an eye out for the Rupert game supper (it'll be a Saturday in late November), which seems to have the widest variety of different kinds of meats out of all the game suppers in that part of the state.
If you're into board games, Black Moon Games in Rutland (between Walmart and the post office) has a good selection and runs a lot of different events every week.
If you like cheese, Consider Bardwell Farm is in Pawlet right by the New York state line.
You should be able to get milk from a local dairy (Thomas, just north of Rutland) at any of the supermarkets around.
Mad Tom Orchard in Dorset is a great place to go raspberry picking in the summer and apple picking in the fall. They should be open for raspberries in July.
General words of advice: I'm not sure what you're expecting to find in Vermont, but be aware that the area you're moving to is not really the Phish/tie-dye/Ben-and-Jerry's version of the state that a lot of people seem to expect. It is also probably not as convenient as you are used to - most things are going to be a twenty minute drive away. If you can take the place as it is, it's a great place to live and you'll get to see a micro-culture that doesn't exist in very many places anymore. I highly recommend getting involved in hunting if that interests you at all.
Unfortunately it doesn't sound like that is going to make it into the final bill put forth by the Judiciary committee. Here is a framework of what the bill might look like now. No home grow. No smoking lounges. January 1st 2018 opening of retail stores.
I guess it would be possible for homegrow to make the final law if the House passed a version containing that and it stayed through reconciliation. Likely a long-shot though
Also note the addition of 25 more state troopers over 3 years as a result of this bill. I guess to contain the scourge of legalized marijuana. That is a completely unnecessary expansion of the state budget
Lake Willoughby. Lots of hiking, fishing, and not too far from Hill Farmstead.
I would go to https://www.alltrails.com/explore/us/vermont/stowe and then type the town you are visiting, it will come up with trail recommendations, show the difficulty, and the length of the hike. Depending on where you are staying, there are lots of short, rewarding hikes with a view for all skill levels.
As a VTC grad with a BSCE I can tell you that it's slim pickins. You will have to make compromises. Figure out your REAL priorities.
Sysadmin jobs are few and far between in Vermont. I have a buddy with 20 years exp as a low level sys admin who just left the state b/c he couldn't find work. I have another buddy who's basically making the circuit working for a few years at all the big growing tech companies in VT. So it can be done but you better be above average. It's a SMALL state so social networking is critical as is reputation.
Also sys admin positions are RAPIDLY disappearing as business move to the cloud and Google automates you out of a job. If you want to have a job next decade get into DevOps NOW.
http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=linux+administrator&l=vt
6 jobs
http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=windows+systems+administrator&l=vt
17 jobs
half of those jobs aren't even sys admin, they're devops. good luck
Also there are a few big consulting firms that suck a lot of the air out of the room like Symquest and Panurgy; you might check them out for a position.
I saw this on Facebook the other day. The contact email address is for a company called Nasmas, which hasn't exactly got good reviews:
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/nasmas.com
I sent the details to VT Digger, hope they could do a story on it.
They've got a few slips, it looks like.
I don't think there's a fee, but I'm not sure. I'd call to double check.
As someone pointed out last week, the non-compliance reporting tool asks for your own personal information as well as info on where the problem happened, but you could probably put in Joe or Jane Public and use your spam email account.
As far as hiking is concerned, it depends a lot on how in shape you are and how long you want to hike for. Personally, I would suggest driving up Smuggler's Notch, parking, and walking north on the Sterling Pond Trail.
https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/vermont/sterling-pond-trail
> is there cell service across all of Vermont?
Not even close. You mentioned Brat - here's the coveragemap reported by devices using the OpenSignal app. Both AT&T and Verizon say they've got full LTE coverage, and yet. If you're in town, you should be fine(ish). But the more rural you get, especially if you're on the wrong side of the mountain from a transmitter, you may have to pursue backup options.
Well here's a story of a mad max-esque Vermont, written by a Vermonter:
Looks like it did! IMDB has a credits listing for someone that appears in a DVD special feature. Amazon has an out-of-stock listing for it, but you can watch it via their streaming service for $20.
Green Mountain Girls Farm is a wonderful place! Absolutely perfect for a small event. Even if you don't have your wedding there, take a tour, purchase goodies in the store, and have Lattes on the Hoof!
Believe it or not, UVM is cheaper than Champlain...and often thought to be more reputable. CCV is a good choice is you're tight on cash.
oh nevermind you're going to Bennington not Burlintgon.
let me google that for you:
I've been unable to find much other than a sentence or two in some history books. I'd love to find the original resolution.
Get https://redditenhancementsuite.com/. Then you can filter out the posts you don't want. You can filter by user or by source. I have filters setup for news sites that I find to be pretty much garbage.
First, Amazon is very profitable: https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/02/03/amazoncom-inc-earnings-profits-march-higher.aspx
Second, from your comments I see you have a tourists perspective of Vermont. Before trying to tell the people that live in VT how to improve the state try living there and being involved with the local communities.
Vermonter typically don't like flatlanders trying to dictate what is good for them.
No idea about realtors, but I just moved to Bolton (well within 60 miles of Burlington) and get fiber from waitsfield telecom/selectronics. It's fucking awesome. Real 50mbps speeds any time day or night. Even though I only pay for 50mbps, I often get speettest.com and fast.com results closer to 75mbps. And I pay 70something a month for that. You can get 100mpbs+ for more $$$. Think about the waitsfield telecom/selectronics region too.
TBH I installed one of these a few days ago after stocking up on 102 rolls of TP. Best purchase ever silly as it may seem. Never been so clean:) Maybe if it gets bad I can put the TP on Ebay.
Instacart?
Or Amazon.

I would feel comfortable putting a case of beer in it and not worry about it breaking. Or Three gallons of milk in glass jugs.
Any cotton canvas tote bag should work though.
> Diesel makes up only a small portion of the cars on the road and thus has a minimal overall impact on the air quality.
While there are more light-duty vehicles (normal cars) on the road that diesel vehicles, each diesel vehicle emits way more than each light-duty vehicle. So diesel vehicles probably emit more particles (abstract only, sorry) than non-diesel vehicles. Also a lot of industrial-sized engines are diesel-powered.
> Wood smoke emissions pale in comparison to the ~275,000 cows producing around 250 liters3 per cow, one of Vermont's leading non-point sources of air quality pollution.
Where did you get those numbers? 250 liters of what? Over how long of a time period? Usually we're concerned about greenhouse gas emissions from livestock (carbon dioxide, methane) while fires produce pollutants that can directly affect health, like smoke (particulate matter) and carbon monoxide.
> Mold and mildew only affect indoor air quality, not outdoor. If they affect you, go out side or move.
This is true. Indoor air quality is a real problem! Educate yo'selves.
Here's an easy one: https://www.amazon.com/ATEQ-QuickSet-TPMS-Reset-Tool/dp/B008SCWXN4
Here's a powerful one (that I went with): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CFZSJQX
...there are others, if you search TPMS tool....
My opinion, as someone walks and bikes but rarely drives:
- That crosswalk needs repainted badly
- No crossing guard? Do kids not walk to school?
- I suggest you use a different tone when challenging the drivers. You're using the tone I use. Start with "good morning..." It doesn't always work but I find it can help, especially with the captive audience you have.
- If that doesn't work, get a horn:
https://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Bike-Horn-Bell-Adults/dp/B000ACAMJC/ref=sr\_1\_1
Alright then. It's interesting you brought up the industrial revolution. Because this goes much farther back.
https://weather.com/news/climate/news/ice-age-climate-change-earth-glacial-interglacial-period
And at the very least, you admit things are dynamic. Shit changes. What was true 50 years ago is likely not true today. So why are you fighting it? And I never called you a name, fyi. Might want to change how you interact with people if you expect honest discourse. Otherwise people will just write you off or counter with more insults. Unless that's what you want.
To add to what I said previously, you might want to run your email address(es) and usernames through this website (haveibeenpwned.com) to see if you might have been compromised on some other service. A lot of people tend to reuse passwords and hackers/scammers/spammers take advantage of this.
Those buildings on the bottom are from Montpellier, France and not from Montpelier, Vermont. That's why this is confusing to people.
Yes! I got it on Chewy.com, they deliver it right to your door. This particular one was pricy but they have a lot! Here’s the link for this exact model:

When I first moved to Vermont from the flat lands I struggled with the inclines too. Now, they’re not that noticeable. Practice makes perfect!
Almost every town has a walking trail into the foliage. Stowe’s paved path is actually quite nice and backs up to places to eat. There are some waterfalls to hit with easy parking around Stowe as well. Fairly easy hikes. Hiking to the pinnacle… that’s a different story.
Texas falls has some easy trails and is fun to explore. Eagle Mountain in Milton. Five Tree Hill in Williston. AllTrails is a good resource. And there is a book on this topic: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0762722479/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_7RNBHR0SZ2R6NQZEFCA8
7.4.6...Jesus, yeah that's nuts. That's not home audio, that's a damn theater. Yeah as much as much I assume you spent on all of those speakers I would probably go with professional set up for this project too. The AVR alone had to be crazy expensive. What AVR did you get, X6700H? The only advice I can give you with the project, these Denon's run hot as hell. Like, too hot to even touch. I ended up getting a dual external fan that just sits on top, one blowing cool air in and the other pulling warm air out, and it has brought the temperature down significantly. I'm sure with your set up, you might already have something more heavy duty for cooling, but def don't overlook that. This is the one I bought
We used to use this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RHMFQSA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
with good results, though a booster like this only really works if you already have some service somewhere within coax range. In our case we could get 1 bar of LTE service in our front yard but nothing in our house, and the booster allowed us to get reasonable LTE service in the house.
Can be closed for safe storage in pocket. Blades can be replaced as they get dull. God tier power in removing stickers from flat surfaces.
How dare you! It’s so bad they needed to make plushies to help flatten the curve.

"Your mocking of LBGT people proves you’re here in bad faith."
I assume you mean my reference LGBTQ (XYZ) the XYZ part refers to the different genders that are popping up on cultural surveys. Ironic that I included that in good faith...
Politically I don't really mind however folks want to categorize themselves... I am concerned about that percentage of adolescents that are just teenagers and should not have genitals and hormones damaged for life.

an RV surge protector will work, they're not cheap, but way cheaper than a new dryer, just make sure the plug is the right one, otherwise you'll need to get an adapter

Weather Underground has a good list of recommended weather stations that anyone can mount to their house and upload data from: https://www.wunderground.com/pws/hardware-software
mPING is very helpful! Honestly, some of the best insight we get is from viewer photos. Someone sending me a picture of ice from Chelsea, VT is much more helpful than me trying to decipher if ice is occurring based on radar data.

Some interesting stuff in the comments, including a broken link that leads to UVM Landscape Change Project website, search results for Glastenbury shows some other cool pictures!
uBlock Origin is an addon for, um, a good number of PC browsers, but on mobile ... if you want a good browser with a decent ad-blocker, I'd go for Lightning. That said, it looks like the Play Store version is behind a paywall for full features (the free version of the Lightning browser there doesn't include the blocker).
If you get fdroid (another repository like the Play Store for FOSS-only apps - essentially meaning that none of them have ads or cost any money), you can get the Lightning 'Plus' version for free.
This is by far the best snow forecast in the state:
https://www.weather.gov/btv/winter
It sometimes loads really slow during snow events, but it's worth the wait. They also have a few other good bits of data in there, like onset times and end times for bigger weather events.
For general forecasts, the wunderground graph view is awesome:
https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/vt/chelsea/05038
The nice thing about wunderground is that you can choose a personal weather station and get a graph forecast based upon that exact point. I have a station at my house, so the forecasts are pretty decent.
According to weather.gov and weather.com, Winter Storm Watch in effect from Saturday evening at 7 pm to Monday Morning at 1 am. I don't have a preferred forecast source unfortunately. If your car doesn't have 4 wheel drive (even with snow tires) you will have a hell of a time getting up Bolton Valley Access Road if it's snowing hard. Speaking from experience here! I'm planning to ski at Bolton on Saturday and possibly again on Monday if the roads are clear.

Maybe not, but sunburn does -- and sunscreen helps prevent sunburn.
>Sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself, so protect yourself outdoors with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or sweating. Drink plenty of fluids.

I highly recommend the loop below. I’d start by going up the Emily Proctor route. Once you get up to the shelter (and there are some really nice areas to camp in the vicinity), you can drop your stuff off and continue south to Breadloaf mtn or even to the pond. The next day continue north on the LT to Cooley Glen and drop down back to the car via the Cooley Glen trail. I do this loop with my best friend every October and we usually see five to ten other people the whole time. There are some beautiful views both East and West along the LT, and the trails up and down go through some nice deciduous forests so you’ll definitely be able to peep some leaves if you hit at the right time.
The camping part is at high elevation, though we’ve never had a problem being too cold. (The one year it snowed I had conveniently misplaced my backpack so we didn’t end up going). You are allowed to build a fire (usually), so that helps.

Second this.
Bristol is cute town, with a nice downtown center with shops to poke in: get a coffee, look at local art, etc.
Starksboro doesn't really have any real businesses downtown like Bristol does (a town hall, school?, and post office and I think that's all). There's some nature trails and hiking you could mention: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/us/vermont/starksboro
There's the ski resort towns east of there that have activities and food as well: Madriver Glen/Sugarbush.
No worries, I have Verizon 4G for my cell plan as well, and we have good coverage with Verizon at our home. I just didn't like any of their internet plans, and wanted a local company, hence VTel. I get similar speeds on Ookla or Fast.com with my 4G phone. Verizon has a shit-ton more towers around, and probably a better supporting infrastructure. I will say, that if VTel guarantees those speeds at your location, it will be doable for most things. They gave me a guarantee with their gear/technician setup, but I went lone-wolf and have been satisfied with the outcome.
Good luck!
Camels Hump might be a reach for a 4 yo. You might want to try Stowe Pinnacle as a warm up/ test hike. There are also trails at the Little River State park that are interesting.
The Waterbury Record is a good resource for what is going on in Waterbury and Stowe.
Burlington is pretty easy to get info on. Outside of Burlington the first that come to mind are Red Rocks in South Burlington, Gilbrook Park in Winooski (super flat), Riverwalk/Casavant Nature Area in Winooski (very mild terrain), a trail system off of Kennedy Drive in I think is South Burlington, MacCrae Farm in Colchester, etc.
How much of a masochist are you? You could try this https://ridewithgps.com/routes/6332615?lang=en. Seriously, any corner of this state is going to have great riding. I would recommend, though, putting on 28/32c tires so that you can get off paved roads and hit some gravel. With more miles of gravel roads than paved in the state, you get to considerably expand your options, climb more hills, and ride with FAR less traffic.
Unless u like Hoi Paloi, I'd spend more time in Northeast Kingdom & other spots mentioned in comments rather than Stowe. But that's my opinion only.
While in Montpelier, if you have time to head to Barre where Rock of Ages marble industry still goes on, you can visit both the quarry and Hope Cemetery (supposed to be haunted)...many of the monuments were made by local Italian artisans...its kind of a museum of cemetery monuments. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g57176-d775613-Reviews-Hope_Cemetery-Barre_Vermont.html
If you can go down I-91 on way back, stop in at Fairbanks Museum in St Johnsbury... really cool old museum with alot of VT history. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g57387-d105710-Reviews-St_Johnsbury_Athenaeum-Saint_Johnsbury_Northeast_Kingdom_Vermont.html
Wishing you a fun trip
Yeah. If you're interested in it at all, let me know if you want me to send you a router with OpenWrt pre-installed -- I get Meraki MX60W's for about $8 after shipping, so happy to throw you one for free if it helps.
Could be that I live in an apartment complex with as many out of state plates as in state or just not being in a hot tourist area. The main gripes here seem to be the bar crowd.
Unless they plan on closing the state borders I’m not sure what the whining about out of staters is doing. It’d be a lot more productive to report shitty behavior (and the businesses enabling it) and move on.
For hiking I really enjoyed Sterling Pond.
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/vermont/sterling-pond-trail
For food drive a half hour north to Cambridge. Take 108 to 15 and stop in at the Cambridge Village Market for excellent sandwiches. Jeffersonville (take 15 a few miles back toward Stowe) has the Cupboard, another great deli.
Fun Fact! Battery Park is a Drone No-Fly Zone due to its proximity to the airport

With the tick population seemingly getting worse and worse every year, here's a suggestion for a tick repellent spray. I spend lots of time out in the woods and spray all my outdoor clothing/gear with it. Very rarely, if ever, do I get ticks on me anymore. I cannot recommend it enough! LINK HERE
The brand I have isnt on Amazon anymore, but was just a cheap model. I recommend any of the reservoir style, not the portable styles with the tank built in. The water tank is larger, and its easier to use.

Very much agree. They're also often good for more than one use and can be reset without touching the icky bits. They're not exactly expensive, but if you get enough mice it starts to add up. Obviously pest-proofing is the solution, but it's easier said than done.
I got some kn95s with behind the head loops from bonafidemasks.com - specifically these. They often have 7-20% off coupon codes so for 20 it worked out to basically $1/mask.
And then maybe something like this if you want to modify wearing any mask. Haven’t used this myself, but seems like there are lots of similar products

TBH my photos kind of suck, I think the best resource is simply Google: "Glastenbury Vermont charcoal," "Bennington Glastenbury railroad," and other like searches turn up a surprising amount of photos and articles. I think the fascination with this place has resulted in a lot of available info, and I hope that will help your research. I think your best bet is to go out after the snow melts but before the trees are full of leaves and explore by foot. If you stick to the trail where Harbour Road ends, you should be just fine.
EDIT: This is a good book too, I haven't read it cover to cover but I flip through it on occasion: https://www.amazon.com/Glastenbury-History-Vermont-Ghost-Town/dp/1540218090
i mean, it's not exactly cheap but if you're really craving some Lilt you can get it on amazon, here's two 6 packs of it for like 28 bucks.
Get one of these - at any local bookstore - and an app that will give you GPS coords offline. https://www.amazon.com/Delorme-Hampshire-Vermont-Atlas-Gazetteer/dp/0899334415/

The local bookstore thing is important.
I drive a lot for work and carry a Verizon and an AT&T phone (personal phone and work phone). Verizon definitely has the best coverage in Northern VT, but there are huge holes that AT&T fills.
But as was said, use Google "download areas" and get the Gazetteer. We keep a Gazetteer in every work car and no matter how proficient everyone thinks they are at getting around and downloading maps and shit, we've all ended up thankful that the Gazetteer is there.

From what I've read about MK-Ultra, many of the participants in the experiments were patients at psychology clinics at universities and colleges.
The book The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein tells the story of one young nursing student at McGill University in Montreal who became depressed and sought psychological help from the university's counseling center / psychology clinic; she ended up as a subject in the horrific experiments of MK-Ultra.

I used something like this to get the hang of flying and to be able to practice indoors: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MNG37C2?keywords=syma%20x5c&qid=1457981447&ref_=sr_1_4&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-4
It is cheap enough that a crash won't be too devastating and it is actually really durable - I have had countless crashes with no damage other than scuffing up the body.
I have never used one of these, but they are commonly recommended for beginners who want to try a drone with First Person View: http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-Quadcopter-FPV-Camera-Toy/dp/B00GSNWB5K/ref=as_li_bk_ia/?tag=rccrunch-20&linkId=e522285040ac3b30a050de062892e974&linkCode=kia
Let me know if you have any questions and good luck getting started! Drone flying and photography is a blast!
