That's The Zork Chronicles by George Alec Effinger. There were a couple of different novels based off of Infocom games. There was also The Lost City of Zork by Robin Wayne Bailey, but Chronicles is the one that's in the GUE. Chronicles was a fun book when I reread it eight or nine years ago. I really enjoyed Lost City, but I haven't read it since I was a kid, so I have no idea if it was actually good or not.
Hey, I created a sandbox linked to my github repo: here's the link. It generates the zork1 map as an interactive network graph using vis.js. You can drag rooms around and the links act like springs. Might take a few seconds to render. Still not a perfect solution, but it can be embedded in a web page (maybe in a viewport). Tell me what you think.
wow, you make it look almost too easy!
I had to get the Brady strategy guide which was kind enough to spell it out.. Ugh I hate slide puzzles.
Overall it's a good book though, and at over 300 pages it goes over EVERYTHING in the game.
