I'd created /r/LivePoliceChases with the hopes that people would post links to live chases there. http://blogtrottr.com/ does rss->email, so it'd be useful for notifications.
Either way, I'm not sure what the exact nature of your question is. But for people to post links here to live chases is quite acceptable. And has been done.
Assuming you mean, in a way that is not just writing your own code...
I would create a Yahoo Pipe to read the hpmor.com RSS feed, visit the links and dump the HTML. (something like this - apologies for not just publishing the pipe, but I only have so many yahoo accounts to burn up)
Then use an RSS-to-Email service to send the pipe RSS to my inbox. The Blogtrottr free plan will let you set your account to "plain text only", which should do the xml-to-txt conversion gracefully, but they can only hit Pipes once a day, so you may be up to 24 hours behind (and their 'digest' mails may truncate the chapter, not sure). Other RSS-to-email services are available...
Awesome. :)
>reddit doesn't seem to have a good option for notifications
True, although there might be a solution I could help with if you're interested: I/we/you could create a subreddit for posting of live police chases. There's services like http://blogtrottr.com/ - in that case, sending RSS feeds to email so people could set up alerts.
Meanwhile, posting a link in that theoretical subreddit to the post here would mean people who set up alerts there would be directed here, if that all makes sense.
Basically, if you like the idea but don't want to handle the moderation, I can create it and run it; or if you like it and want control, that'd be cool too. :)
Either way, thanks for the post :)
I'm a poor broke bastard, so I can't afford the neat toys it can talk to; I mostly use it for things like taking a Facebook post a client makes and posting it on Twitter - things like that. I was using it for RSS→email, but http://blogtrottr.com/ does that much better (daily delivery of webcomics and.... nefarious searches. hehe)
I was searching for ways to utilize this RSS feed so I could get updates to my email.
I ran across this site: http://blogtrottr.com/
So far I think that is the best option, feedburner and google reader do not seem to have the option and other sites i tried don't have realtime delivery. i have no idea whether or not this site will spam you etc though it does look fairly legit so i used a spare account. proceed with caution.
EDIT: just add the link provided by dmxell (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/external.php?type=RSS2&forumids=9) and your email then confirm your email address.
if anyone knows of a better option please let me know, i admit i didn't search too hard
One of the perks of being a moderator is that by using the mod toolbar, I see when there's unmoderated posts, so if I'm around, I sometimes get first crack at a new submission like that, too. :)
Anyone else who wants the same experience - http://blogtrottr.com/ offers free RSS→Email and it checks every few minutes. If you add ".rss" to nearly any reddit link, you can get RSS. Well, and some like RSS clients, I just never have.
So the .rss feed for here would be:
(Note that I added ".rss" after "search" because that's the page. If you're not familiar with how URLs are built, "?" indicates the end of the location and the start of the parameters. After the first parm, "&" indicates the next. "%" indicate character codes and are part of the name or data of a parameter)
(So the RSS for the entire sub would be reddit.com/r/panelshow/.rss - for a simpler example)
There's an RSS feed for that page you could watch, or you could use that feed with something like Blogtrotter.com to send you a daily (or hourly) email when the page changes.
Awesome, thanks. For anyone interested, I fount that the RSS feed for this is: http://gmatclub.com/blog/category/blog/gmat-tests/feed/
You use http://blogtrottr.com/ to have each new set of questions sent to your email. Not sure how the formatting ends up, though, and they use special formatting to hide the answer until you highlight it.
So I only started using Facebook after I found Nutshellmail - which gives me email updates... Just how I roll.
I'm working on trying to find a method to get email updates from G+. Since I found a GREAT free RSS-->Email site, I figured RSS might be the way to go.
The linked site (http://plusfeed.appspot.com/) only allows you to get an RSS feed of one user's public posts.
...meh.
Anyone have a better method for email updates from plus yet? :)
