It took Facebook almost 4 years to reach 50 million users in 2007 (source) Facebook was fairly relevant in 2007.
I'm guessing that Google+ is now the 3rd largest internet social network in the world (behind Facebook and Twitter). Does that sound right?
The problem is that so many people assume there will be a complete migration from one social network to the next, like how everyone left MySpace for Facebook. But that wont happen again. Most people wont fully abandon Facebook for Google+ or vice versa.
When the next big social network comes around in a few years, people are going to be sick of building up their friends lists from scratch. Hopefully by then social network websites will just be a front end for your social network database file that is completely independent.
Can you imagine if you could only email someone using the same email service as you? That's kind of how I feel about these social networking sites right now. Can anyone give me more info about plans to setup an open social networking protocol or something along those lines?
G+ is better suited as a tool for your company to communicate with the public and your customers. Consider Yammer for internal employee chat.
Your employees are probably already using several social networks, so usually it comes down to explaining your expectations and then trusting your employees. Find out what they're using and how they use it. You might find they already have a solution for you.
I use a (Chrome) extension called Plus Minus. It should be built into G+, but this does exist in the meantime. I keep my Reddit circle unchecked lol.
It's cause you have Replies and more.
This confusion is also why I will not be using a google+ extension until google+ is final.
Edit: I accidentally a noun.
About to send out the first batch of 50 invites. Let me know if you are in.
Also, I feel like a tool for this but since alas I am a poor college student with over 75k in debt...here is a donation link. I feel dirty asking, and need a shower...but hey that's the story of life.
Edit: downvote all you want, its a simple ask not a requirement. Off to work, sending more invites later in the day. Read my posts in this thread and you'll see when. If you get a invite reply here so I know the work around is still working. That is KEY, because I don't know if you don't comment.
Or, for the automated method
Edit* Well an hour later of refreshing every 30 seconds hasn't yielded any results for me..Google is hating. I would guess there is a higher chance of getting in tonight as server load will lessen as people in US go to fireworks shows/light off fireworks
>We won’t be letting users under 18 years of age into the Field Trial until we’re confident that we have the right teen safety features in place. But that doesn't mean you won't get to use Google+ at all... it just means you'll have to wait a little bit... I'm sorry!! > >And for all of you wondering we currently have no plans to open the product to users who indicate being under age 13.
Don't worry, you'll eventually be able to use your normal e-mail. Like me, you just have to create a new account for G+ for now. Then re-create your account on your other e-mail.
Lucky me though, I'm 13. So I'll still be able to have G+ when it comes out officially!
I prefer Surplus
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pfphgaimeghgekhncbkfblhdhfaiaipf
Same notifications and functionality for Plus without adding an additional toolbar to take up page real estate.
I don't know if this will help in your situation. When I deleted a circle on accident a few months ago I was able to get them back from gmail's contact page. https://mail.google.com/mail/?tab=Xm#contacts click more -> restore contacts.
export first just in case
Some tips for improving your Facebook experience:
If you find that one of your facebook friends consistently posts crap you don't care about, mouse over one of their posts in your feed, then click on the X in the top corner of their post. Then click "Hide all by <friend's name>".
Use the same method to hide updates from pages you've liked.
Install F.B. Purity. You can customize exactly what you want to remove from your news feed.
This talk showed me that define gender can be a very delicate subject for some people, so I agree with Randall that we should not make mandatory to do so.
That's coming very soon, complete with the ability to schedule hangouts. [Link](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/google-plus-events-leaks-out-through-google-calendar/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+weblogsinc%2Fengadget+(Engadget)
It looks like the cock bags removed it. The method you descibed used to work:
https://medium.com/@mulligan/how-to-completely-remove-birthdays-from-google-calendar-53e3e53acaca
Google has now provided the following statement to TechCrunch: “While there are options for people to turn off the Birthday calendar, we’re currently working on a solution to make it even easier for people to have more control over this feature. Stay tuned.”
http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/09/google-calendar-birthdays-tfbs/
Not exactly what you're looking for, but I use the SGPlus extension for Chrome, which allows me to update Facebook and Twitter from Google+. Doesn't work the other way around, sadly: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hbgcgahdbgbdenffckohanhobdcnkoip?hl=en-US&hc=search&hcp=main
I'm pretty sure it's Replies and more for Google+.
edit: Or maybe it's the usability boost. Fuck knows, I just have both installed and can't figure it out.
Making all of reddit look like this should be easy enough, taking this subreddit's stylesheet and making it work with Firefox's Stylish extension (is there a Chrome equivalent? Edit: there is) I've added it to my todo list but will probably end up too lazy/busy for it, so somebody do this already.
+1 Omnibar button - +1 any website easily!
I could put the theme up on GitHub so people can do what they want with it (like load into Stylish).
It may not interact too well with other subreddit styles though, and that's something I'd rather not explicitly support.
As you can see, it's also still changing; you might want to hold off until it's done. :)
>The transition from Picasa and Blogger to Google Photos and Google Blogs will occur “in a month to a month and a half,” we’ve been told. The date aligns with the likely public launch of Google+. Mashable has been told to expect the public debut of Google+ on or before July 31. The date is important because it’s the day all private Google Profiles will be deleted.
Ok, this is a bit of a process (there is no way to do it in Photos yet). I'm assuming you're running Windows (I'm using 8.1).
Deleting pictures in this folder will not only delete them on Drive but also on Photos. There is no Resolution criterion unfortunately.
Yep, exactly. Came here to say this.
It could be months before a more indepth API that allows third-party posting is released. On the other hand, you can go the other way by autoposting to Twitter from your G+ stream using ManageFlitter.
Indeed but the mass of users are using it along the lines it's been designed with and their way of using it is not independent from the way Google wants them to use it.
I recommend you watch Rory Sutherland's TED Talk which I found quite interesting. Around the 11 minute mark he says:
>The interface fundamentally determines the behaviour.
I'm absolutely sure that there are ways for Google+ to give the users impulses for using the Circles in a more sophisticated manner - they just have to be thought of and implemented into the system.
There's an extension for chrome that does this but I can't remember what it's called. I uninstalled it because It mostly just takes forever to sort through everything.
EDIT: Found It Plus Minus
EDIT 2: I should read all the comments before posting next time. Already mentioned.

How do I permanently delete my account? If you deactivate your account from your Security Settings page, your profile (timeline) and all information associated with it disappears from the Facebook service immediately. People on Facebook will not be able to search for you or view any of your information.
In case you want to come back to Facebook at some point, we save your profile (timeline) information (friends, photos, interests, etc.) so that your account will look just the way it did when you left. A lot of people deactivate their accounts for temporary reasons and expect their profiles (timelines) to be there when they return to the service.
If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and then submit your request here.
If you are currently unable to access your account, you will need to reset your password in order to log in. In order to do so, click the "Forgot your password?" link that appears above the field where you would normally enter your password. Once you’ve followed the instructions to reset your password and can log in, you can deactivate or delete your account using the steps outlined above.
I'm not having the issues you are but before G+ added the auto upload feature I used this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chrisstreeter.android.picasauploader
I'm pretty sure that's it. Never had any problems on my N1.
I've been looking for the same thing! If you use Chrome, there is this addon: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jjokndodgmegnailikmiaccphkdkmgle#
I use Firefox primarily so still looking for a solution there. Tired of seeing NSFW content on my stream...even Facebook lets you mute a person's posts without unfriending them!
You can't view multiple (but not all) circles at once like you can with calendars in Google Calendar... unless you get an extension. Plus Minus does this (and a few other things) quite well.
Pretty much anything in the Chrome webstore is nearly guaranteed safe...but still be cautious. I would actually recommend this one instead. Has the same feature mixed in with a bunch of other awesome G+ features.
If they are rolling it out it's not for everyone at the moment. But I doubt they have as, 1. It looks exactly like Replies and more for Google+ (see third screenshot) and 2. Google would probably have made the number more readable, as they have in the gmail lab.
Must be rolling it out - closest thing I could find was this
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/illlmhgddcibickdjmdieldgfmpcnmgm
Same functionality but it replaces the + with the number instead of putting it in the bottom corner.
Brilliant... But how secure is this extension?
edit: looked at the permissions and not really that comfortable with not being able to disable things like this that can read my cookies when i'm logged into my bank account.
aside from that, no share button, and everything i click in the nav-bar creating a new tab gives this a kind of poor user-experience. i'm sticking with Surplus.
The 'j' and 'k' key will let you jump from post to post (j=forward 1, k=back 1). Also, there is the +Comment Toggle Chrome extension which will add a little widget to each post that lets you expand and collapse the comments on that post.
I removed it from my list of approved applications, I'm not sure on how to go about doing that on G+, though.
You can revoke access here; if the hyperlink, for some reason, doesn't work:
go to settings (https://plus.google.com/settings/general)>click "Visit the previous version of the Google accounts screen »"> on top under "Security" you'll see hyperlink "Authorizing applications & sites" click it and then just click "revoke access" for any app you want to remove
Would multiple account sign-in solve your problem? You'd still have to select which account to use, but its much faster than logging out and back in.
Here is a big angry article from ZDNet from last week. Some people are screaming bloody murder about it.
Because Google have invested big money in Zynga^1, the creators of FarmVille, Mafia Wars, CityVille, Dope Wars and a myriad of other crappy Facebook games.
Edit: Oh man. Didn't realize this thread is 9 days old. Still a valid comment though.
You might enjoy this feature, an app tab:
Some ideas:
ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt.
Reset your router if you have one.
change your DNS server in internet connection properties from DHCP aquired to 8.8.8.8 (Google public DNS)
ultimately, just wait.
but it should work if you try those steps out.
If you're using Chrome (or Vivaldi), there's a great browser extension for Hangouts. If you're using a different browser (or are at someone else's computer), go to https://hangouts.google.com/ .
> Can you tell me what skype can't do that google hangouts can (serious question)?
I thought it was group video chat, but looks like they support this too, although not for free.
Similar to how FB had friend lists for a while but nobody used them, and now everyone's excited about Circles ;-)
I've got 6 to give away, PM me with your email and I'll send an invite your way.
If anyone's interested, I managed to get mine last week by requesting an invite on the main Google Music site using Hotspot Shield (I'm in the UK). The invite was waiting in my inbox the next morning.
Learn to use bug trackers: https://github.com/slambert/selfcontrol/issues/10 and https://github.com/slambert/selfcontrol/issues/7
In the meantime, you could use something like AdBlock or NoScript which gives you more fine-grained control.
I have to admit that I've been inundated with photos in my stream lately. I figured out one way to solve it... an add-on to chrome that is a g+ stream filter:
Stream Filter Beta For Google Plus
I just got it up and running, and it works beautifully! :) Some semblance of sanity is now returned to my stream, and I can use more advanced filters (both inclusive and exclusive).
It depends on if you post on walls with no privacy setting enabled. Try creating an alt account and add yourself as friend. Sit back and watch the horror as all your random activities are streamed from other people's pages to the new account. I discovered lately; it was too late.
I use the +Comment Toggle extension in Chrome. Does a nice job of rolling up comments into a single line I can expand as needed.
I use the +Comment Toggle extension in Chrome, and it is fantastic at rolling up the comments into a single line you can click to expand if you want.
> It is kind of annoying that I can't edit the default stream to only show certain circles though...
I'm thinking of adding that feature to my extension. Do a lot of people want this feature?
I think you're referring to this chrome extension. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me, or many others I think. If your screenshot is of another extension that works better, we'd appreciate a link. Kinda hard to find it from a screenshot. :)
There's one for titles too. They're both developed by a redditor. The same one the made the extension that changes notification count in the black bar to a reddit envelope.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dcdelcombiokflhgdlmdcfbdfogaplij
Same here. I figured it was the Usability Boost extension, but perhaps not.
Automated Chrome Extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ehhbbfcbgdkhgmgklafopihcgphddpad
All albums moved over are private, so you have to go into each one after you finished them all and choose the circles.
If you're using Chrome, this is pretty damn handy. I've been using it for all Google+ related stuff, there's surprisingly little you can't do through it.
>I was pointing out that all that useless shit, that constant noise, is actually people doing it right because you can't share things with specific lists of people (to my knowledge.) Yes you can by using Facebook Lists but more or less nobody knows about this feature and thus nobody uses it.
I'm glad we're on the same page now because I really didn't want my opening post to sound condescending or like a rant. It's just that nobody I know is really happy with facebook and the way it works and gets used and I have high hopes for Google+ to change that. But in order for G+ to reach its potential people have to use it as it is intended and not simply like another facebook. ;)
hmmm have you enabled push notifications?
search for push notifications and follow the isntructions
Not even sure if any of us is going to win against Google. The lawyer might just rigged the entire lawsuit and charge us instead. Overall, $12 is still not helping this dead app. Google+'s final message
Just tried it on a new account and I could definitely create a profile. Log into your Google account overview and use the link there to create a profile.
Also, I am not Google tech support! :P
May have something to do with the huge investment Google made into Zynga last year.
Also games are about the only way Google will convert a lot of people to G+.
If you use Firefox, Multifox (beta) is awesome. I currently have app tabs for four different gmail accounts, an app tab for G+ and it remembers which login to use for all that when I start Firefox back up. (It says Firefox 4 but works in 5 - I think that's the page I installed from)
I'm not even on G+ yet but I could make and upload some resized versions of a gif I have, it's easy to make and size gifs from videos your self with VirtualDub, which is free.
WP7, BB & Symbian are all listed with empty boxes on http://www.google.com/mobile/+/ - but I can't see them leaving these large audiences out for long. Bare in mind G+ is still new-to-market, and the majority of people still can't get in.
In the meantime, there's a nice mobile web interface.
I'd be fairly interested in this too. It would be a nice twist if Google made one up that posted a link to your G+ post to facebook, forcing everyone to have to see it from G+ and that lovely interface. I did a quick search for ones myself, there's multishare extensions, but most don't even share to G+ which tells me they are a bit dated.
Have you tried the G+1 button extension yet? I think it's single-handedly got me to start using G+ more just by being so darn easy to use. To me this sets the bar for what sharing extensions should be. Here's the whole group of G+ extensions.
"Lack of Mobile Presence".
Um, hullo? Google+ App on Google Play Store. Google+ App for iOS, iTunes store.
Idiotic article is idiotic.
I used to use Folder Sync to sync from google drive to my phone. Seems crazy that Google drive doesn't have an offline option for folders though
You could put them on Google Drive and then just mass copy them to your phone using a file explorer (like Solid Explorer).
