Just one of the many reasons I use Murdoch Block. I have expunged that disgusting man and his toxic views from my life. If more people use tools like that advertisers will leave and that is one of the best ways to take his power away.
Groovesharker Here
If you use Grooveshark at parties, check out two amazing add-ons.
1) DjTxt. It sets up a party-wide collaborative playlist so anyone with a cell phone (and hopefully you aren't partying with people without cell phones) can add songs, skip songs, etc. And yes--there are safeguards against douchey behavior.
2) If you use Chrome, try Groovebud. Set up a big playlist, click on the little icon, and scan a QR code with your phone--then you can walk around your house using your phone as basically a big Grooveshark remote.
Both of these were made by awesome members of our community!
EDIT: perkinator linked to this awesome map below covering recorded history. Deserves to be on top here, pretty much exactly what I was looking for
EDIT2: I see some comments about how it's hard to look at the year and the changing map at the same time and I totally agree. I find it very helpful to split the gif in to frames using this chrome extension so I can look at each frame in more detail.
From the wikipedia article. My dream is to have a map with a slider and checkboxes for all kinds of things like like religions and civilizations, and have it integrate with wikipedia.
Ah, I see my extension, Open Reddit NSFW links in Incognito window, is famous once again.
Two things I want to point out:
The extension does NOT modify anything you post. So, if you have the extension installed and post a link to an Amazon product, the link will NOT have my referral code.
The extension does NOT modify links with a referral code. I don't want to take referrals away from other people, so I wrote the code so that it ONLY modifies "bare" links.
If you find the extension useful, it's a great way to support my development and show support. It doesn't take any effort on your part, nor does it cost you a thing. However, if you find the extension useful and still don't like it, you can disable the link conversion in the options.
I found this extension for Chrome
It does block you from playing games (or at least the one I play)
Well here is a link to it, so half the work is done for you.
Man, look at me linking all over the place. I am on fire today!
Until a better search engine for tech-support and forum content becomes available, you really need Personal Blocklist if you use Chrome.
This not only allows you to block these spammy content-farms from showing up in your search results, it actually demotes their Google rank for others.
It works great. The first time you search for something like this, you will have three pages of such garbage links, and it will take a bit of hunting to find which is the actual forum where it first appeared. Then just block all the others (a little button will appear next to each Google result), and next time you do a Google search for a tech-support problem, your search results will be vastly improved.
Chrome users, please make the world a better place for all of us. Use personal blocklist.
It is yet another step backwards in design. Any idea how to get a view that shows you new subscription videos as before? ie. I like to see new videos but I also want to be able to 'x' them off my list if I have seen them or if I am simply not interested. I notice there is a "subscriptions" list with "new videos" but it seems to remove them if you have clicked on a video (annoying because I might preview it to check then want to watch later without having to go find it in the subs tab) and it is also frankly terribly organised (not grouping the videos from the same subscriber simply ordering by date of upload).
Also seems the whole redesign is to monetise youtube more and have more ads for cat videos along with the suspiciously narrow design screaming MOBILE DEVICE. Still at least the ratings preview extension still works to have that reminder of when youtube used to let you see a suggested video's rating before you click on some troll vid and give it more views, increasing it being wrongly, poorly, suggested.
All in all wtf youtube, yet again becoming an ever more over simplified mess.
TL;DR any part of the old way sub videos was organised remaining that I haven't noticed or is it as shit as I fear it is?
Edit Just noticed they also turned expand/shrink into two buttons instead of one...why? Who had issues with that? God damn stupid redesigns, they always fuck with things that don't need changing and leave the shit unaltered. /rant
Those of us with ~~RES~~ just have to hover over the link text and the image pops up. Super easy. EDIT: It's not RES, it's Hover Zoom. Sorry! (Need more coffee!)
Accidently went to gmail*l*.com, got an alert popup, clicked ok, laughed, took a screenshot using the chrome extension, closed the window, clicked "YES I FUCKING WANT TO LEAVE THIS PAGE", and then submitted it here.
If you use chrome, there are a couple of mods that should remove that kind of stuff on most sites:
There should be a few mods that do the same on firefox, but I cannot be of assistance here, as I am a chrome user.
Cheers.
Google is attempting to combat content farms. Users using Google Chrome can "vote" to have a site knocked down the ranks by downloading the Google Personal Blocklist. When you vote to have a site blocked from the results, that information is sent to google who then weighs it in with their score in addition to blocking the search engine results client side.
It seems to be working as my results have once again become more relevant and the blocked sites numbers drop every week.
[](/ohisthatacarrot "Thank you.")
edit: It just occurred to me I'm not on [/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu](/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu) and some people might not have the extension that enables you to see emoticons from that subreddit on other subreddits. If you can't see what I wrote, it's a picture of a carrot. You should also get Reddit Enhancement Suite so that you can see the source of comments.
edit 2: to be perfectly clear, Reddit Enhancement Suite won't let you see the carrot. It will just allow you to see what I typed to get the carrot, which is
[](/ohisthatacarrot)
edit 3: YOU NEED TO CLICK source UNDER THE COMMENT TO SEE IT
Allow me to introduce you to Hover Zoom for Chrome. It lets you hover over a photo or even a photo link, as in this case, and see it. No, I'm not the dev. I just love it. That's all.
Very similar to Invisible hand, a chrome alternative. Priceblink
I would also like to mention that I have routinely done this sort of checking, and more times that not I find that it's cheaper on Amazon, whether by lower shipping costs, or just plain price.
Please everyone, use Murdoch Block. It warns you before you give a page view to anything Murdoch and gives you the option to go back or carry on.
Who the fuck goes to Youtube from reddit?
Also, if you needed to click my link rather than hover over it to see the image, you're doing it wrong.
On Chrome, the Pomodoro Strict extension will block whatever sites you want for 25 minutes and then let you on them for 5 minutes at a time. It's worked well for me. Also, Reddit is blocked by default.
I'm surprised noone has mentioned Google Dictionary (by Google), which displays a word's definition upon double clicking it.
Hi all!
The app comes after getting my inbox filled with requests for a Warp Prism mobile version. So, here it is:
Warp Prism Mobile 1.0
Swipe left / right to change streams
Swipe up / down to change channels
Fully synchronized with all streams with the base site.
Random use cases specified in emails:
Watch at work
Watch on the bus
Watch while walking
Watch on the toilet
For Dreamhack, there will be a special channel ready for this weekend. This means you will be able to watch the big tourney this weekend on your phone! For any bugs / feature requests, the new Warp Prism forums (http://forums.warpprism.com) are active for tracking.
.
All proceeds will go towards keeping the Warp Prism servers alive. Please let me know if you are broke (much like I was) and can't afford the app. (jakefrink05 - at - gmail.com). The more people that watch together, the more fun it becomes!
.
I will also be on chat within the window. Stop by, say hi. Let me know if any issues arise. Here's to watching gaming everywhere!
cheers,
Jake
.
ALMOST forgot to mention: Warp Prism on Chrome App Store (if anyone has a chromebook / likes a one click shortcut): https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hidokbkbdkjmlpfohbkmljfjlekmdaam?hl=en-US
.
NOTE: Make sure your Android supports Flash. You can check by going to App Market, searching for "Flash". If Adobe Flash Player 10 pops up in one of your listings, congratulations! You can run Warp Prism. Please let me know if you purchased the app and realized your phone does not have Flash at jakefrink05 -at- gmail.com
"Just Learned Javascript?": I call bullshit. some chrome webstore sleuthing Not your first extension by a long shot.
The code's Excellent, But no need to lie.
I am displeased that these extensions aren't links! I'm to lazy to type these in.
Edit: Here's number 1, Hover zoom https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nonjdcjchghhkdoolnlbekcfllmednbl
Edit 2: Second one, Image Preview https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/onjnjkdpcenccelaggaiakhmkjlcedab
Here is a Chrome extension to fix that. But the streaming service on PS3 is goddamn impossible! I feel like I'm missing out on so many movies/shows because of that layout!
Hover Zoom and Reddit Enhancement Suite are the best things to happen to the lazy.
I love the infinite scroll, no more pages to deal with.
The stars on the side allow you to favorite the streams! A little pop-up appears when the favorited streams come on line.
Edit: Link to extension
And if you're using Chrome, you can use this extension to make youtube even more bearable (hide all aspects of the page, such as comments, related videos, headline, description, playlist, etc).
May I also suggest Comment Snob.
Basically removes 'the stupid' from youtube comments. Does a brilliant job.
Comments will be removed if:
doesn't start with a capital letter
Has too many speling erors
Uses too much punctuation!!!?!?!!
IS IN ALL CAPS
And you can add filters to words you don't want to see.
I've been working exclusively with the Chrome Developer Tools for six months now, and I have come to prefer them over Firebug. Take a look at this vid from Paul Irish: Chrome Developer Tools Reloaded.
Also, the Web Developer Toolbar is available for Chrome as well :)
Murdoch is a scourge on humanity. Hopefully he and his team of evil fuckers will be brought down from the NOTW scandal. I have posted this before but I use the Murdoch Block chrome extension so I never give any traffic to that disgusting and vile group of cunts.
>take my eyes off of Reddit.
See this? It's called Google Dictionary. Or here is an alternative for Firefox.
Click this:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kcfbijoldkenmemnbbkjnpdhnijgahck?hl=en
Then click "Add to Chrome."
Then click Install.
Then click on the Robby Roto App that shows up on your home page.
Scroll down to where it says "Click here to run MAME with your own ROMs", and click it.
Scroll down, and click on "Choose File", and pick a ROM. Then click "Start Game."
TL;DR: It's possible now. It works.
It's funny because Amazon, Google and others do this/have been doing this for ages and yet nobody gives a shit.
Google is in fact tracking me on reddit as we speak. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jeoacafpbcihiomhlakheieifhpjdfeo See for yourselves.
It's actually not a blankpost.
Add this extension for chrome to see the f7u12 faces in every subreddit.
IE users should switch to Chrome or Firefox. Did you know you can play Angry Birds on your computer for free with Chrome?
If you're on a slow or bandwidth limited internet Opera has a feature that will reduce the amount of data you use while surfing.
All have adblock.
Too bad that's not the real adblock. This one is. Ignore the comment war over these two over which one the 'real one' is. Just check the authors out.
Not saying you shouldn't donate to the other adblock guy.
Are you thinking of the other adblocker? There's two big ones and it's easy to get them confused. I made the same mistake. Link to Adblock Plus proper.
Just remember to look for the little Adblock Plus stop sign if you ever forget which one's which.
Or you could get the Google Chrome extension that allows you to simply right-click on an image and select "Search Google with this image"
Although it's disappointing that Google don't have a native feature to do this (one may come at some point, they are still rolling out loads of updates/overhauls) there are some extensions that allow this. I think this one should be able to do everything you want https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ooecfhdoddbnaemajiegakhchcfpjada
For me it shows up whenever I hit the new tab button:
I suppose this could be fixed if I changed what page displays when I (or others) hit new tab...
edit: I thought this was a default option in Chrome, but apparently it's only possible with this extension.
Very, very sorry. I thought it was a RES feature. Turn out it's not. I've got this installed, as well. It makes Reddit 100% better.
As calebegg mentioned, Adblock Plus is an extremely awesome and popular one, and very easy to use. If you go on the "Whitelist" page of the extension, you can type "reddit.com" and whatever other websites you appreciate enough to not block their ads. Hope this helps!
After using this for a few weeks or months, when you use someone's computer without it you're going to be pretty shocked to remember that there are that many advertisements on the internet.
edit: Also, if you notice some YouTube videos don't load properly without a refresh, you might want to disable the Ad blocking inside YouTube videos. It's a really nice feature, but sometimes causes problems.
The Chrome extension StayFocusd can block websites during a time frame you specify or limit the amount of time you can browse the websites of your choosing. It also has some options that attempt to prevent you from extending the time or unblocking a site that you can no longer browse.
One such feature is the ability to require yourself to type a 200 word paragraph before accessing the settings screen. What makes this difficult is that if you mistype anything you have to start all over. There is no backspacing.
There is a similar extension for Firefox called LeechBlock, but I have not used it. I cannot say whether it has the same tamper prevention settings.
All of this sounds strikingly similar to torture though, so I think this link will probably help you more than either of the previous two.
'Facebook Disconnect' is what I use for Chrome. The guy's other Chrome extension 'Disconnect' blocks more than just Facebook but I don't use it as only the Facebook integration/cross-site shit annoys me.
It's true, I was clicking my handy reddit companion to upboat your webpage, and to my surprise it hadn't been submitted yet.
At that moment, a terrible darkness swept over me. Could this be it? My first opportunity to become Internet-famous and sweep in thousands of karma points by becoming the first submitter?
No. Back you demon! Back into the murky veil of obscurity. This karma belongs to someone else, and you are one righteous motherfucker.
Hurry, man. You must submit this before temptation destroys us all.
"fuck you" to someone who offers you a service for no charge? (apart from ad's)
stop whining and get a chrome extension to fix it fool https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mmffncokckfccddfenhkhnllmlobdahm
edit// that site, even though has pagination, has the pages already loaded. its just javascript to toggle through them, you dont have to load 50 pages you karma whore
Rupert Murdoch is a good barometer. If he likes it, throw the shit away!
Thanks for the story, I forgot to install this, since I changed computers.
I use a (Chrome) extension called Plus Minus. It should be built into G+, but this does exist in the meantime. I keep my Reddit circle unchecked lol.
*how to use: right click on the gif "Gif scrubber"
**link update. My fault. Danke alejandro712
Chrome Currency Converter for people not in the US.
It automatically puts your local currency in brackets whenever a monetary value is detected on the page.
Hover Zoom (Chrome only) brings up the full sized image by hovering over the thumbnail. It's also insanely useful for Reddit in general.
A lot of people seem to use FB Photo Zoom but not Hover Zoom which works on over 20 sites like Flickr, Picasa, Reddit, Twitter and of course FB itself.
This Chrome Web App I made would probably interest you. With it, you can see which games an arbitrary group of Steam users have in common.

I went over it with a fine-toothed comb, and I'm good. I can't spam-post the links publicly all over the internet, but converting non-affiliate links for a user is not disallowed.
EDIT: To hijack my own comment, here is the extension if you want it.
browsing will never be the same with hover zoom. also, clickable links
It's cause you have Replies and more.
This confusion is also why I will not be using a google+ extension until google+ is final.
Edit: I accidentally a noun.

once they update the store that link should work -- I wrote it in about 5 minutes.

Might work for the time being.
One of my favorite things about Chrome is their Google Dictionary extension. Double click on any word and a little tooltip pops up giving you its definition. Click "more" next to the definition and you're sent to a page with oodles of information compiled from all over the place.
EDIT: Here it is in case any Chrome users are interested.
If you use Chrome 14 or later with Experimental Extension APIs enabled in chrome://flags you can run the experimental version of AdBlock Plus for Chrome which will use the experimental WebRequest API to block ads. It's much more effective than previous blocking methods on Chrome and has been blocking all video ads without a problem since I've been using it.
Apparently AdBlock for Chrome can also now block all flash and video ads as well, as long as you're running Chrome 17 (currently in Dev or Canary builds only). No idea if you have to enable the Experimental Extension APIs flag for it to work though.
I got a couple.
Reddit Companion: Click a link from reddit and now that page will have a tool bar at the top with upvote/downvote/comments/save. So open a picture and decide your voice needs to be heard, you don't need to switch back to the main page, just click comments and you are there.
disconnect: Web anonymity tool. Blocks pages from seeing your Facebook cookies or logging you userid from Google or Facebook. Basically depersonalizes the internet for you and prevents webpages from tracking who you are and where you go.
AdBlock Plus: Does what it says, blocks ads and popups on webpages, just be sure to allow ads on your favorite sites, like reddit.com.
Disclaimer: I made that. And it doesn't do anything you can easily do yourself with Notepad or Firebug or the Chrome Developer tools, it just provides a more WYSIWYG interface which, again, isn't anything you can't do with Chrome alone (document.designMode, as mentioned above).
I just noticed it doesn't work right on twitter.com thanks to key event handlers. Hrm. Gonna have to see what I can do about that for version 2.0.
i use Disconnect for chrome. tbh im not sure that it really does a whole lot, never looked into it too much, but it might be of some use to you.
SOME -- AND I IMAGINE ALL, ONCE YOU UPDATE -- OF YOU CHROME USERS ARE HAVING PROBLEMS DISPLAYING THE HOVERING ALT-TEXT OVER RAGE FACES!
THIS EXTENSION WORKS BY DISPLAYING THE ALT-TEXT IN-LINE, AFTER THE RAGE FACE. IT'S A TEMPORARY SOLUTION, AT BEST, WHILE WE WORK ON WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT MORE PERMANENTLY, BUT IT'S BETTER THAN NOTHING!
TAKE IT EASY, AND STAY SAFE OUT THERE, FRIENDS!
There's also a really cool TL extension for Google Chrome. It's a bit buggy sometimes but overall really useful for a quick check of who is on.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/padelkgfoancpcpjlhfnamekcomkhbnk
To add, if you hit "Unlike", it'll change to "Don't want!" with this face
Thanks, that makes me warm and fuzzy! I can provide the CSS and images, but as far as getting it applied to all the sites... I'm not sure. You could try Reddit Enhancement Suite (although I've never used it), or maybe Stylebot. Also, you'd have to host the images somewhere (logo and up/down arrows).
Basically, it's a bit of a pain :( But if you do fancy a stab at it, here are the files!
Another Chrome extension, Awesome Screenshot, inserts Amazon affiliate links into Google's search results, according to this blog post, which also claims that Google purposely does not have an extension review process, a la Mozilla's for Firefox.
Installing Google Dictionary is one of the best things I've ever done to my online browsing experience. Whenever I come across a word I don't know I just double click it and get the definition without any effort on my part.
For chrome I use this extension. It blocks other sites' communication with facebook. I didn't know there was a fb option as well, gonna check that.
I use a History extension that does something similar. Among other statistics, you can see a list of your most visited sites.
For me, Reddit's #1 at 6414.
Download either AdBlock for Firefox or Adblock for Chrome and then subscribe to a pre-made filter such as EasyList.
Do you use Chrome? Download the extension Priceblink. If you're on a shopping website, it searches others for the same product and displays lower prices, coupon codes, and reviews as you shop. Pretty neat. Works for Firefox too, if you're into that.
c:
Sorry, I couldn't hear you over my ability to have one window in Incognito Mode and another window in normal mode. ;)
Also, you forgot this.
I recently had to write a paper and kept getting distracted by reddit and facebook so I looked into it. I came across an extensions called Concentrate. It lets you make a list of sites to block for however long you want to. You put in the number of hours and minutes. There is no way to stop the timer. Of course, you could use another browser or private mode, but simply seeing the blocked message was enough for me.
<strong>animated png extension for Chrome users.</strong>
After seeing these scroll past in Flank Up yesterday I knew what had to be done, so I set out to find these. For some reason these were stupid elusive. Luckily with the help of resident human(?) pony porn database Equius_Zahhak I was able to get them and turn them into that apng.
Anyway, here's two more that weren't included. According to Ponibooru the artist is DarkPandaX, though these aren't on his DA so I can't confirm that.
Music Plus extension for chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ipfnecmlncaiipncipkgijboddcdmego?hl=en-GB&utm_source=chrome-ntp allows to download tracks, and adds lyrics and other stuff as well
>...a new design that will launch soon with the complete removal of the black menu bar.
What? I doubt they are going to do that. It's the main way they can hook people into Google+, for a start.
I use this Chrome extension to customise the black menu bar, replacing some of the redundant items with other Google services that I use often.
Plugin for you: imgur, lets you right click any image an rehost it with a drop down menu.
Install Google's PDF Viewer extension for Chrome, get an alternative desktop PDF viewer (I like Visagesoft's), and never use Acrobat/Reader again

> They did not court developers.
No joke, yesteday I received an email from a product manager over at HP asking me to develop my Chrome web app for the Touchpad. They offered to advertise it, and offered us MDF and loaner devices.
So, they actually did court developers. I was really happy when I got that email yesterday, and now? I hate HP.
Can you just link to the source extension next time. It's a pain in the ass to find the link in Gawker blogs (although lifehacker may be the most tolerable).
This is a cool little Google Chrome Extension that I like to use to keep track of upcoming races quickly and easiyl
Cheers!
They do horrible things to cause drama as a way to get more traffic, and thus make more money. They are the Westboro Baptist Church of Blogs. Stealing property, destroying trade shows, being general douche bags-- fine, but joking about being on FUCKING DEATHBEDS? There's a line, and Chen crossed it.
As petty as it might sound, I want Chen to publicly apologize and then resign. I'm going to vote with my clicks, so until then, not only am I not going to visit his site, I will also be doing the following:
Since they are using unethical journalism to get pageviews instead of contributing real content, I consider them no better than the average blogspammer-- all gawker submissions will be downvoted.
Big or small, all subreddits that I or my friends moderate will have gawker submissions sent to spam instantly. I will report all gawker submissions as spam for subreddits that others moderate.
Using Chrome, I am adding all Gawker sites to Chrome's excellent Domain Personal Blocker extension. Simple steps: after installing, go to Gawker's advertising page, click on each of their blogs, and click the block button. This will not only block all Gawker sites from your google search results, it will actually lower their rank on Google for other users.
Block from /etc/hosts, just for added effect. Add all advertisers that support their blogspam to adblock filter list.
Public apology, resignation. I'm tired of this company using unethical techniques to get pageviews and I don't want them to set an example of what the next generation of journalism to be.
I've actually already noticed a decrease in crap links the last couple days since the latest changes landed, but of course, there's confirmation bias at work I'm sure. Hopefully this will help even more.
You can do as knudow says, or you can use their extension for google chrome to have "block [domain]" under each search result without having to visit the site first.
like this? --- there is an option so that it doesn't close when you select something, basically making it like a sidebar.
chrome doesn't use a searchbar, it has an omni-bar, but you can just type the URL in the omni-bar, and press tab. Then it will allow you to search. For instance, type "amazon.com" and press tab. Then search for whatever and it's the equivalent of what you're looking for.
