Probably because it is Mac only and a shit-ton of us DJs are on Windows.
By the way, Why does no one talk about Mixvibes Cross? It's way better and more stable than Traktor for sure. It has a lot of features that I really like. It has overlapping waveforms like Serato and Virtual DJ. The Sync can be configured to sync on phrase not just on beat. It has a MATCH feature that will search the BPM and Harmonic key of your entire library to show you what tracks will mix well with the currently playing track. It has soundcloud support (you can DJ directly from any track on Soundcloud as long as you have an Internet Connection, it works very well). I love the way the visual display shows you where the phrase start is with a triangle so I always know where the phrase is.
Also it's only $50 ($100 if you want DVS support and Video DJ mixing). It works on Mac and PC.
Absolutely it is. It's not often used in clubs but it is more popular with mobile DJs. Either way though it will get you all the basics down.
That being said, for free DJ software I prefer Mixvibes Cross, check it out!
That's a tough choice, I think they are equivalent and either one would be good. The Pioneer has a better reputation and comes with better software (Serato DJ), while the Hercules has better hardware (24-bit soundcard, XLR Output, Booth Output, High Resolution Jog Wheels, all Metal casing, gold contacts).
Personally I'd go with the Hercules RMX II, but if for example the DJ was interested in Serato then the Pioneer is a clearly better choice.
I do play out in small clubs though and much prefer the XLR balanced output. I use http://www.mixvibes.com/ software anyway so I don't care about Serato.
curate your library and learn https://rekordbox.com/en/
download some free dj software (I suggest Mixvibes - they are the company that originally created rekordbox for Pioneer - although now rekordbox is developed in house) and practice with that. It has soundcloud support too so you can DJ any tracks on Soundcloud live as long as you have an Internet connection. It should help so you can try out a track before you buy it.
work on just on phrase transitions without beatmatching. I'm both surprised and a little disgusted by modern DJs that don't know how to do a simple on phrase transition on the 1 without beatmatching. Learning this skill is a way that you can transition in and out of any bpm and any genres. This is how Top40's 'radio' djs and 'event' djs do it.
On library building - start paying attention to the record label. If you want to find similar music to the artist you like one of the quickest ways is to check out other artists on that label. Also look for who remixes that artist and who was remixed by that artist.
Start and learn about scrobbling over on last.fm (you can check me out here. It's a fantastic resource for finding new and similar artists.
I think Mixvibes Cross Free is better than Virtual DJ. I got VDJ with my controller and used it for several years before switching to traktor and later to Mixvibes Cross.
http://www.mixvibes.com/products/cross
It also has the added benefit of being much cheaper if you do end up buying the full version. It is only
Not free like Mixxx is, but it's far better and pretty inexpensive at $50: Mixvibes Cross DJ.
I've used both Traktor and Virtual DJ for years and switched to Cross. It's much better and has several features others are missing such as phrase sync.
Download https://rekordbox.com/en/
Analyze all of your tracks. Put your analyzed songs on a USB.
Watch some tutorials on how to DJ on CDJs. Download some free DJ program like http://www.mixvibes.com/cross-dj-mac-pc/ and practice for about two-to-three hours, get a feel for it, and I think you should be fine.
Mixvibes can connect with CDJs, too, so you can bring your laptop - just practice with mixvibes and then bring a USB connection to hook into the CDJ and you should be fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbKHjYZ1RFo
If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Good luck!
KEEP IN MIND - ~20 songs = 1 hour (depending on what genre, the length, etc. If it's house/edm just assume each song is about 3 min long). Try to have about half an hour extra worth of songs to play. 2 hour set => 50 songs total just to be safe.
EDIT: You can also use Serato (free to download, but only gives you one deck to work with unless you're hooked into authorized equipment) natively with CDJs. You can find videos on how to do that on youtube.
You need Mixtrack Pro 3 not the regular Mixtrack 3 for Serato.
Honestly the Mixtrack 3 is pointless. I have no idea why Numark sells it at all. It needs it's own audio interface to be useful. Even their recently announced lower end Numark Party Mix has an audio interface!
Sorry you got 'swindled' someone probably told you to go buy a Numark Mixtrack and failed to mention "Pro" or you just didn't realize that there was a "Pro" edition and thought you were getting the right gear.
If you have the money for it return the controller and get a Mixtrack Pro 3. If you don't have the money for it then return Serato DJ (hope you can, explain to Serato what happened maybe they will pity you) and return the Mixtrack 3.
Then go buy a Numark Party Mix and use the Virtual DJ it comes with or my personal recommendation go pay $50 for Mixvibes Cross: http://www.mixvibes.com/cross-dj-mac-pc/
I still think that is a rip off. Mixvibes Cross is $50 ($100 if you want DVS and Video DJing); if you use Virtual DJ for > 2 months then Cross was a better value.
I don't really think that Virtual DJ is bad - it is just horribly overpriced IMHO. If it were around $100 one time payment and at least 50% off for upgrades it would be a worthy contender. However at $20 a month or $300 one time payment it is overpriced.
Give Cross a try if you haven't yet. It has a free version limited to mouse and keyboard and you can use it in trial mode with a controller.
You are better off posting to /r/DJs and /r/Beatmatch
Short answer is no, unless you hit the Craigslist lottery there is nothing inexpensive that will work with pioneer's rekordbox format without a laptop.
Pioneer does make two products in this market the XDJ R1 and XDJ RX - the thing is that neither are much cheaper than a pair of CDJ-350s (although they do have more features and include the mixer).
If you do just want to do some dj practice with a laptop you can go with Mixvibes: http://www.mixvibes.com/
It's cheap and the DJ software supports rekordbox format (Mixvibes actually is the developer of rekordbox for Pioneer). So all your tunes will be tagged right for CDJ use.
I highly recommend Cross: http://www.mixvibes.com/products/cross
It has a free version that you can experiment with. I spent 2 years on Virtual DJ 5/6 and 1 year on Traktor. Cross is my go to now. The visual waveforms are significantly more advanced than any other DJ package. It is stable software, fast, and inexpensive (full version is $49, $129 with Vinyl DVS and fullscreen Video DJ support).
On my Mac I managed to create a web streaming channel my players can listen to by combining the following apps/sites:
A lot of setup and a lot to manage. Something like Syrinscape that syncs with other players for playback is great.
Edit: formatting.
Use the "camera kit" USB connector and a 4 channel USB audio device. You may need a powered hub in the middle (I made up a special device cable with external power using an old phone charger because I didn't have a small powered hub.)
It can have 4 outs and ins simultaneously depending on the app.
Edit, this is what I use... I like because it has a phono preamp and knobs. Works with djay, traktor, and recording apps galore. http://www.mixvibes.com/products/u-mix-44
Make sure you get a real apple oem camera kit the generic ones are shite.
I suggest you give Mixvibes Cross a chance. I did and I am not going back. I have a Hercules MK4, went to traktor but really didn't like the layout or interface, plus I had a lot of stability problems on Traktor. After switching to Mixvibes Cross I'm not looking back.
http://www.mixvibes.com/ It is only $50. $100 for the pro version that lest you use DVS (Timecode Vinyl/CDs) however the $50 version is all you need.
I have no involvement with and gain no advantage, financial or otherwise from posting about these products. If you’re really super new to all this, you might want to cut your teeth on a software app like Mixvibes RemixLive http://www.mixvibes.com/remixlive-remix-app/ or the Novation Launchpad app https://reverb.com/software/mobile/novation/372-novation-launchpad-app I’d also recommend Melodics for some finger-drumming skill-building lessons https://melodics.com
The program I am using is called Remixlive http://www.mixvibes.com/remixlive-remix-app/
only using the demo version at the moment. want to buy it and may, but want to get at least 1 full track done before the 15 day trial runs out. they have it for Android and IOS as well, but I prefer the PC version of it. just using the free sample/loop packs they offer and want to buy a few of them, but first gotta buy the program. they have a Carl Cox pack that Id love to have. Love me some Cox....Carl Cox that is :)
If you plan on staying a recreational, hobbyist, or guest DJ then I highly recommend Mixvibes Cross. After trying Virtual DJ, Traktor, and Mixx, I settled on Cross DJ. It's so much easier to use than any other package and very inexpensive at $50. You can download a free trial to test it out:
Have you tried this?
http://www.mixvibes.com/wp-content/uploads/Native-Instruments-Kontrol-S4.pdf
Theres a mapping you need to load into NI Controller editor and load it on to the S4, before it will work properly in Cross.
Mixvibes Cross DJ is the best free package IMHO. It's free with no support for a hardware controller. It is only $50 for when you upgrade.
http://www.mixvibes.com/cross-dj-mac-pc/
It's far more user friendly especially to a bedroom DJ than any other package. It not only syncs BPM but it also syncs the phrase of each track. It also has support for Soundcloud so you can play any tracks from soundcloud directly which helps out when you don't have much of a library.
Try Cross DJ on your phone or tablet, I travel a lot for work and it's been fun to have a mix with that when I've got a load of new tunes that I'm sorting through when I'm waiting around or on a plane.
http://www.mixvibes.com/cross-dj-ios-android/
It'll be in stereo and I have used it at a small party when there was only a bluetooth speaker. I wouldn't call it practising though.
Consider the Hercules RMX II. It isn't as widely used but is great hardware especially for the price.
Also consider Mixvibes for your software package, it is my favorite.
I agree, I spent about 18 months on Traktor and they totally lost me as a customer after an update 3 weeks before a gig made my controller no longer function (the midi light would light up but nothing would happen even in controller editior) - for that gig I had to go back to my old Virtual DJ 5 in the end.
I'm now on Mixvibes Cross DJ and am very happy. Every update has been rock solid - plus Mixvibes know that updating is scary ALL your 'old' versions are still there until you manually uninstall them!. Update broke something? No worries just use the previous version that is still installed!
I highly recommend you give Mixvibes a trial you might like it. It's UI is more like Virtual DJ and Serato than Traktor. It has the dual overlapping waveforms view (you might have to turn it on I think it's off by default). I really love the visuals showing not just each beat but also the start of phrases. If you use Sync Mixvibes can also not just be a beat aware sync but it can do phrase aware sync (I don't think any other DJ programs do this - does anyone know?).
I also used Virtual DJ for a number of years. I liked Virtual DJ and it was a solid program - however I feel like it is priced too high. Mixvibes offers the same features and stability for $50 ($100 if you want video mixing + DVS) - a much better price for a part time / hobbiest / occasional guest DJ like myself.
After doing some digging, it appears that Mixvibes Cross offers functionality to stream music from SoundCloud
http://www.mixvibes.com/products/cross
Unfortunately, this is not what I'm looking for :(
If you are looking for a new DJ package make sure to check out Mixvibes Cross. I started on Virtual DJ but couldn't afford $200+ to upgrade to pro just so I could remap controllers. I then switched to Traktor and found it kind of buggy and just not to my tastes. I really missed the overlapping waveforms of Virtual DJ.
I then decided to try out Mixvibes Cross. Wow what a difference! It has overlapping waveforms like Traktor as well. It has plenty of features and runs rock solid. It also only costs $50~!
Full Serato DJ is head over heels better than Intro. Intro sucks.
I have an SB as well, and personally I use MixVibes It's cheap, and has a pretty large feature list. My favourite is importing tracks straight from soundcloud. Heard a banging new track just released by your favourite DJ? Load it in and mix it with your other tracks. It's only 128, but it's a great way to test out tracks before you buy em.
Have you consider trying Mixvibes' Cross Dj?
It's a smaller company than Serato, so they offer a lot of features for a fraction of the price. I just got an SB recently, and coming from intro it's like night and day.
The demo has beatgrid and a really nice sync function, but unfortunately only supports keyboard/mouse, but the paid version has a key map for the sb. The coolest feature though is mixing right from soundcloud though. You just sync your account, and then you can pull in any track from soundcloud. Great for trying to practice with that new hot track you've just heard without having to spend 2.50 on beatport.
I haven't tried the full version of Serato yet though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!
In general, the free/LE versions of DJ software don't allow you to record. If you like Cross DJ, it seems well worth it to pay $49 for the full version. You get the ability to record, key detection, four decks, MIDI control, lots of effects, and a bunch of other features.
Your mix sounded pretty good!
Also comes with a video mixing feature that can even mix/record from your webcam and add a bunch of built in effects for $29.99 extra. Http:://www.mixvibes.com for their stuff
sidenote: I expect this post to get downvoted to hell by the end of the night. this subreddit hates me lol.
Hah i got this for christmas one year! The software that comes with it is called Cross there's a free version and a paid version. it's not bad!
Mixvibes offers a few different products, sounds like you may have grabbed some of their software, but not the hardware/software combo needed to connect to your turntables.
I checked their website and it looks like you need the sound card and control vinyl shown in this pack: http://www.mixvibes.com/content/cross-pack
