Start with this: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/VTTComparison.pdf
There are a few threads on ENWorld discussing the differences between the two products. Some on reddit at /rpg, /mattcolville, and likely /dndnext (maybe other places).
Download the Demo version and play around (note that you can't save your progress with the Demo version).
Also keep in mind that you won't get Fantasy Grounds via this Kickstarter until around December, so if you wanted to start using it immediately you'd need to buy Classic and pledge for the Rookie pledge level if you wanted to back this Kickstarter.
Hope that gets you started and happy gaming!
A lot of class features dont have automatically added effects like spells do. The fantasy grounds wiki has a lot of effects. For fighter specifically, you can either go to the action tab and add a miscellaneous +2 bonus to ranged attacks, or you can add power with an effect of ATK: 2, ranged; [self].
To build on what /u/nylanfs said, I have heard rule set devs quote 600 hours to build rule sets. This obviously isn't for each and every rule set but the fact that some may take that many hours shows that it isn't a trivial task.
If you just wanted to create an extension based off of an existing sheet that would take far less time but again would depend on what exactly it is you need to produce.
One of the community members created the MoreCore rule set. This has a lot of different dice rollers for various RPGs, though I think you still have to manually setup your character sheets (I haven't used it myself so not sure what is automated and what is manual work).

Check it out, maybe it will have everything you need and get you up and running without having to code your own.
This subreddit doesn't get anywhere near the traffic the forums do, or even the Discord.
That said, there's a thread or few on this subject on the forums. One of the posters uses PureVPN with the Dedicated IP option, which allows him to port forward. If I recall, the Dedicated IP option is an additional cost, however.
Others suggest using Hamachi. I haven't tried it yet, as I've heard it's a little on the intrusive side, but no one ever explained what they meant by that. The catch with Hamachi is that your players also have to use it.
If you just wish to play, however, you don't have to worry about port forwarding; only the GM has to do that.
BTW, you might be interested in this forum thread.

Here's the wiki for Fatnasy Grounds I'm not a terribly experienced user, but for the most part I just use Fantasy Grounds as a Dm to read off modules and stuff. You can import images. This guy runs through how to handle Fantasy Grounds.
I feel like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds need to merge. But I kind of gave up using either of them realistically and just host games for players. Best of luck.
http://svn.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?22736-5E-Effects-examples/page12&styleid=5
That link shows someone's dragonborn dragon breath script. The comments there also mention that a lot of those script examples are shown in the Character Sheet section of the 5E wiki.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet
There are also some really good packs of scripts available on DMsguild from Rob Twohy. He has packs for SpellEffects, RacialEffects, ClassEffects, etc. that he updates regularly. Well worth it imo. He basically did all the work for everyone and made it available pretty cheaply. Complete Works of Rob Twohy 2016 has a lot of tables and importantly has a Conditions and Effects module with 175 conditions and effects coded which can be applied to the combat tracker or copied to character sheets. Then his separate 2017 mods are Spell Effects Coding, Class Feature Effects Coding, Race Trait Effects Coding.
If you just get the coding packs alone it is around $33. IF you get the complete works 2016 for all of the other goodies instead of just the feats module from it, the whole total goes up to around $46.
Of course you can follow the examples in the wiki or scour the internet for them but the Twohy packs are all of the work right there.
Hi, AeternumNoctem!
I don't think that you're likely to find a game by posting in this sub, but check out /r/lfg or the LFG forum on the FG official website.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group
Happy gaming!
Here's what I'd do in your situation.
Say you have a Zombie with 20hp. Average hit does 10dmg. So to kill it you need 2 head shots or 10 body shots (because it would round 2.5 down to 2)
To keep that same dmg ratio, you could double the HP of the zombie, add VULN for head shots (doubles dmg) and RESIST (halves dmg) for body shots.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Effects
The result is this:
10dmg Headshot = 20dmg
10dmg Bodyshot = 5dmg
2xHeadshots = 40dmg
8xBodyshots = 40dmg
You would have to run a VPN service. I'm not sure how well they work with phones though. On the forums there are a bunch of threads on different VPN solutions (Hamachi, PureVPN, ZeroTier, etc) and a couple of the folks there play around with VPNs just to see. I would suggest dropping on the forums there and asking. I think you'll get the best answers there (unless one happens to drop in here).
I don't think the 400% is specific to Big Sur, it is for all macOS versions.
This was a recent change to the /scaleUI command to support Retina displays.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/patchnotes_v4.html
[MAC] Provide higher UI scale option settings, as well as initial UI scale setting based on DPI reported.
Warforged are fun! In fantasy grounds to add the effect, click the faint magnifying glass that allows you to change speed, initiative, and AC on the main tab of the character sheet and and a bonus of three to the warforged's AC. For the great weapon fighting, open weapon properties, the magnifying glass to the right of the weapon on the actions tab, and set reroll to 2.
Here is a detailed link to the weapon page of the fantasy grounds wiki. Highly recommend this wiki as a great source of information, especially for common feat and fighting style bonuses:
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet#Creating_a_weapon
The fantasy grounds forums are also a great source of information and tend to be more active than this subreddit, especially for technical support type questions.
This thread will probably be of help. :)
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?15531-Herolab-to-FG-PC-Import-Tutorial
Yeah, on the action tab, each power (in this case spells, but can apply to class/racial powers defined as well) can have multiple actions associated with it. There are 4 basic types of actions that can be added: Cast (to make an attack roll or force a saving throw), Damage, Heal, and Effect. The effect option can be used to add a huge variety of effects. If you want more info on the effects it can add, you can read about it on the FG wiki here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Effects
Because each power can have multiple actions, you can do things like create versions of a spell that cast at a higher level. For example, if a spell does 5d6 damage at 3rd level and 7d6 at 4th level, you can create 2 damage actions, one for 5d6 and one for 7d6. So you can tell the DM, I'm casting this at 4th level, then click the 7d6 roll for damage.
If anyone has purchased within the last 30ish days, get with Smiteworks customer support and you can get a refund to repuchase on the 15th.
Nothing definitive has been communicated that I'm aware. Obviously they want it out as soon as it is ready but they don't want to promise anything until they know when they can deliver.
This thread: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?22089-Fantasy-Grounds-Unity-engine&highlight=unity
Has more information on the Unity version from the developers. Lots of comments from the community as well so lots to sift through but should keep you going for an hour or so!
It depends on what you mean by "the power failed". If it failed to get through a given resistance, it was probably due to a nuance of spelling or capitalization of the type.
This is how I would program it.
Here is a reference for a bunch of Fantasy Grounds programming.
Per JPG >"We're planning to release a module as close to official release date as development allows."
I haven't had time to implement tokens and imagery yet, but during this pre-release schedule to version 1.0, I will be assembling that stuff. I'm currently looking for help in that regard.
To install, go to your FG App Data folder. Put the .mod file found under the Git Hub page release section into the modules folder and launch FG. When you start a 5e campaign, open up the Library window and click modules. You can enable it there.
One thing that might help is that Fantasy Grounds is not a game, it's a tool to let you play a tabletop RPG (like D&D, Shadowrun, Rolemaster, etc) with a group of people. But it's not designed for a single person to play.
You can find a bunch of games here that you can try and join http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group-%28formerly-Guild-House%29
If you are looking for the single player D&D games might I suggest GoG? http://www.gog.com/promo/weekend_promo_hasbro_dd_classics_bundle_200815
You can always connect to yourself by typing localhost as the IP. This is useful for getting familiar with the UI from a player's perspective. If you aren't connecting to a game you're using the GM's UI.
There are forums on the Fantasy Grounds community site http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group-(formerly-Guild-House) that you can find groups in. There's also a calendar available for you to browse open groups.
The UI takes a bit of getting used to.
Are you planning to DM or be a player in another game? What version of the game did you pick up?
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/User_Guides
Start with "The Basics" under "Tabletop".
The best way I can think of off hand is to simply throw it all on a note and share that with the party.
You could also give the Locations / Towns / Shop extension a try here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20794-Locations-%28inc-Shops-amp-Towns%29-Databse-Extension
I haven't used it myself, so can't really make any promise to it's capability.
Have you tried posting in the LFG forum on their website? Seems reasonably active. Though all my games have been with people I actually know from places I used to live, so I don't have experience trying to find new online groups.
Here's the most recent thread on it in the forums. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?23793-Any-easy-way-to-handle-druid-Battle-Wild-Shape-%28circle-of-the-moon%29&highlight=druid
Instead of coding an export option for all of the major VTTs, Megasploot has included a Universal VTT export option in Dungeondraft. This exports all of the wall/door (maybe lighting as well) data into a JSON file. They are leaving it up to the VTT developers and/or extension community to create something to import that data into the VTT.
Ex: Foundry VTT has Dungeondraft Importer which does this.
The way to connect to see the player view is to launch a second instance (on the same PC) and connect to the first.
Make sure the first is fully loaded into the campaign before attempting to connect to it from the second instance.
If you are using FGC, you can open a second instance on your computer (that is the host) and choose Join Campaign and for the Host Address use 'localhost'. This will connect your second instance to the first.
In FGU if you are using LAN game, the above still works.
For a Cloud game, you can still open a second instance (after the first one is fully loaded into the campaign), then join by finding your user name on the list of available games.
Just curious where do you get that Foundry has been around for years? As far as I can tell they just started in 2019 (maybe late 2018). Additionally, they were still in alpha as of July this year, so they don't have 'years' yet.
I have to agree with LE above about the whole cloud thing. Sure it's nice that Foundry uses HTML, we can disagree about the ease of programming in HTML vs. Lua/XML (FG). However, being web based, all of the content is online, if they go under for any reason, all of your content goes with them. With FG if they went under (Doug has been clear that they are in no way in any trouble multiple times), the program will still work for the foreseeable future, there is no web component to suddenly be removed.
I think you should be able to make your own. I made a bunch of custom party portraits that also act as their portraits by resizing images found on google. I've just used this website to do it.
You'll get better traction asking in the forum (way more coders read there than here) and building a table in Lua is simple enough; I just don't know what exactly you're after. (an example would be great)
There are two tables in the script Trenloe mentioned. The first one is for the campaign data list:
-- PFRPG2 - Trait Type filter for Feat campaign data list traitTypeFilter = { "dwarf", "elf", "gnome", "goblin", "halfling", "human", "half-elf", "orc", "half-orc", "general", "skill", "alchemist", "barbarian", "bard", "cleric", "champion", "druid", "fighter", "monk", "ranger", "rogue", "sorcerer", "wizard", "archetype", -- APG playtest "witch", "oracle", "swashbuckler", "investigator" }
The other one is for the Feat view window:
-- PFRPG2 - Trait Type filter for Feat view window -- Order is the priority in which the trait name is matched. featViewTraitTypeFilter = { "dwarf", "elf", "gnome", "goblin", "halfling", "human", "half-elf", "orc", "half-orc", "skill", "general" }
Here is the Lua doc on table.insert.
So you're probably looking for something along the lines of:
table.insert(traitTypeFilter, "my_custom_trait_stringtext")
But please, by all means repost this question in the forum so it gets more eyeballs on it and future users can see your question and all responses.
I got this Philips 34” ultrawide screen monitor for a plethora of reasons, but I LOVE it for FG. I gm, and there’s enough real estate for me to keep everything up in the client and have a browser open for reference or quick searches on the side.
I got this one because I can toggle between my work laptop and personal desktop, using the same mouse and keyboard (and charge my laptop with the USB-C). It sounds like this may come in handy, but if your husband doesn’t need that and you like the idea of a massive monitor, definitely skip that option and save some dough.
It looks like your ISP (or the firewall on your computer, but with 2 computers running 2 os's that seems unlikely) is blocking your outbound connection to the relay server as well.
Assuming everything is as you're reporting, it sounds like you ISP is breaking things.
?43607-Port-Forward-Alternatives has additional options to consider. Hamachi can be free but requires player setup. PureVPN costs money but works without your players setting anything up.
I'd like to hope the cloud game worskt for you if port-forwarding is not working. If not, I'd recommend you hit the playtest forum to see me if anyone more knowledgeable weighs in.
Fyi, it's late here so I won't see follow-ups right away.
Note that I have used my phone for internet connectivity when travelling, but I also turned on my PureVPN (with dedicated IP) on my computer and then my players where able to connect no problem. This is because a VPN (like Hamachi or PureVPN) tunnels all traffic from the VPN server to your computer, bypassing the port issue on your modem (and instead placing it on the VPN server).
So here's what I know; PureVPN with the dedicated IP address has been reported to work from many locations around the world, should work from where you are. Their are others that are reported to work as well (such as Zero Tier), but I would look on the forums as their are extensive discussions and details there. Plus Gwydion or Celestian (?) I think it is that plays around with all sorts of VPN solutions and reports on what does and does not work.
You can use Hamachi for more than 5 people, as GM you would have to setup multiple networks and split your players between them. (If you don't require free, I suggest the other solutions).
Yes you do need a port, but using a VPN solution it takes all the traffic and "smooshes" (that's the technical term!) all of it into the single port the tunnel is using to get from the VPN server to your host. So, this is how you bypass firewalls. So no, you don't need local access to port 1802 since the VPN server has that access and then it transfers it to the VPN tunnel to get to you.
Finally, there are more options, BUT, I'm not familiar enough with them. I really do suggest you try the forums. They are exceptionally active and friendly, The FG Discord is also a good source for immediate support, but of course depends who is online at that moment.
