Whaaaat - I disagree on this point. I think Fantasy Grounds looks loads better than Roll20. I'm not planning on picking up FG anytime soon, because I'm satisfied with my Roll20 experience. However, when it comes to aesthetics, I have to give the cake to Fantasy Grounds. Everything from the character sheet, to the board, to the dice, it all looks good to me.
Fantasy Grounds http://www.fantasygrounds.com/images/screenshots/screenshot0002.jpg
Roll20 http://roll20.net/assets/themes/roll20/images/ss6.jpg
As a current Fantasy Grounds user with an ultimate license, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Been using it once a week for 1.5 years. The learning curve is a little high, but it's worth it. And the ultimate license is a bit expensive, but consider having your group of friends chip in for 1 ultimate license (and the base modules you'll need like the PHB and MM).
The one downside about FG that I don't really have a solution for is that drawing a quick map or writing notes on a map within FG really sucks. You'd have to edit the image outside FG and then import it back in.
If you're interested in trying it without paying anything, check out the Fantasy Grounds forums (http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/index.php) and ask around for an ultimate license user who would let you connect to their campaign
Roll20 is a phenomenal service and I highly recommend it. I suspect that a lot of other people will recommend it as well. If you really hate Roll20, there are a few other alternatives - Try Fantasy Grounds. There's also one on Steam, but I forget the term. Tabletop Simulator, I think?
There are also countless RPGs out there that aren't DND. If you give me a clearer idea of what your gaming group prefers, I can probably find a game that is right up your alley. DND is a great game, but don't default to it just because it's the most famous one. If you answer this mini questionaire, I can give you more tailored advise:
RIGHT HERE my friend!

Holy shit snacks, all done!
There is Fantasy Grounds 2, which is very similar. I use it weekly for my games. Its good, crashes a little but it works. EDIT: added a Link for fantasy grounds
The matchmaking seems like an awesome idea, the biggest problem I've found is actually finding a group, it seems very few people use Fantasy Grounds. Perhaps it could tie in with [/r/LFG](/r/LFG)? The voip is a nice idea too, but people could just use Teamspeak, GSC or other such alternatives to simplify things.
But yes, tl;dr Me likey.
Hey, you don't need to know people, there's a lot of ways you can play D&D online! If you're into play-by-post, check out RoleGate, which lets you play asynchronously at your own pace, from one post a day all the way up to a dedicated hour or two on a regular basis. There are also some cool discord-based groups you can get into for play-by-post or live chat games, and games on Roll20 and FantasyGrounds (which I hear are great but haven't tried yet). Check out /r/lfg, there's lots of people looking for players over there, you might even find people in your area!
I've played a little bit with Fantasy Grounds II (http://www.fantasygrounds.com/), which does a pretty good job. It's got great features allowing for custom content creation and rulesets. Some of the license setups are pricey, but it's worthwhile. Our DM had a license for the Ultimate edition, so none of the players had to purchase it. We used Skype for Voip and video if needed.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/VTTComparison.pdf
That document is about a year old, but it compares features of the two systems. I will also say that it is biased towards Fantasy Grounds with how it lists features.
Very true for customization. 5e looks decent at the moment but there isnt much flavor yet. 4e is fun for your wargaming groups.
I bought the fantasygrounds ultimate license for everyone to use free. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php
Here is the website. My only advice is that if you have the option of in person with friends its always better. Being online provides plenty of distractions (reddit!) to players and this can sometimes hinder. Online work requires a little more prep than offline as you need most of it typed up and making maps is not as simple as drawing them on the fly. Typically it is a little less free form. It can still be very fun if you have the right group of people.
Fantasy grounds we liked particularly due to its modules system. Imagine a module like a released book and you simply add them to the campaign and thats it you can drag and drop powers, track initiative for you and health, have tokens, etc etc. The DM has an extra layer of tools and generally we have found the program perfect for our needs.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php
These are the ones I've seen used the most to run the game proper on.
As for general information resources, the system you're using is going to dictate most of it.
Start with this: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/VTTComparison.pdf
There are a few threads on ENWorld discussing the differences between the two products. Some on reddit at /rpg, /mattcolville, and likely /dndnext (maybe other places).
Download the Demo version and play around (note that you can't save your progress with the Demo version).
Also keep in mind that you won't get Fantasy Grounds via this Kickstarter until around December, so if you wanted to start using it immediately you'd need to buy Classic and pledge for the Rookie pledge level if you wanted to back this Kickstarter.
Hope that gets you started and happy gaming!
Have you considered playing online? It's not the same as being at a table with folks, but it's something. You can find games online and offline at r/lfg
You can find services with lots of tools to play online here. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php https://roll20.net/
A lot of class features dont have automatically added effects like spells do. The fantasy grounds wiki has a lot of effects. For fighter specifically, you can either go to the action tab and add a miscellaneous +2 bonus to ranged attacks, or you can add power with an effect of ATK: 2, ranged; [self].
It's supposed to be tiny. Map was requested by my nephew - "i need a small map for brawl outside of tavern" . It's a part of bigger map, i just need change some textures etc. Have no time. You can check later (maybe week) here or here
The best way is via Fantasy Grounds.
Roll20 and several mods for TableTop Sim work well too.
Use TeamSpeak/Discord/Mumble/Skype for voice chat.
To build on what /u/nylanfs said, I have heard rule set devs quote 600 hours to build rule sets. This obviously isn't for each and every rule set but the fact that some may take that many hours shows that it isn't a trivial task.
If you just wanted to create an extension based off of an existing sheet that would take far less time but again would depend on what exactly it is you need to produce.
One of the community members created the MoreCore rule set. This has a lot of different dice rollers for various RPGs, though I think you still have to manually setup your character sheets (I haven't used it myself so not sure what is automated and what is manual work).
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?34860-MoreCore-Ruleset
Check it out, maybe it will have everything you need and get you up and running without having to code your own.
I use FantasyGrounds for online D&D and it's fantastic. The quality, feel and automation of gaming with that program is wonderful. Props will be difficult to pull off but you can share images and text with anyone or everyone. Sound and music will have to be added in as well, but with programs like Syrinscape or Tabletopaudio.com and some virtual soundboard magic you can stream sound and music over Skype.
Being online shouldn't stop you from having fully immersive gameplay and the automation that programs bring might even let you spend more time roleplaying and less fiddling.
Playing online would seem to be a good choice for someone in your position.
As mentioned
is a good choice and so is
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/
Roll20 is free to play, whereas for Fantasy Grounds you might have to pay a one-off fee (some DMs have a special license that enables any number of 'free' players to join). However this weekend Fantasy grounds are having a games convention where anyone can join for free but space is limited:
You won't need to run a VM to run FG on Mac OSX. There is a 1-click install on Steam and we recently fixed an install issue we had on gifted Steam copies for Mac. If you don't want to go through Steam, you can follow these manual install steps to create a WineSkin wrapper for it. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?17399-Guide-How-to-install-FGII-on-OS-X-using-WineSkin-(Recommended)
Don't have time for another group right now, but my advice... check out Fantasy Grounds or Roll20, and give something like TeamSpeak a shot rather than Skype.
Every group is different, but from playing online in the past, I've found that you don't really need video or anything else Skype has to offer, and TeamSpeak helps make file transfers easier.
I can vouch that Fantasy Grounds is amazing for online play, but a little complicated. I can't vouch for Roll20, but it seems pretty popular and might be simpler.
<strong>Fantasy grounds</strong>. Cluttered and complicated at first, but wonderful if you invest effort into learning how to handle it.
Edit: I didn't try it with WoD, but the word is on the street that the community produced sort of "plugin" for FG, one that allows to play WoD.
if you're willing to invest very little money($40) try this - http://www.fantasygrounds.com/
they have a message board for campaigns looking for players..... http://www.fantasygrounds.com/calendar/
really worth the look. our group uses it and we have players from alaska to massachusetts.
Fantasy Grounds II FTW! Seriously, it is a great platform for playing, and even better for hosting games online. Throw in a Google hangout voice/video or Skype chat and it is not far off of sitting together in person. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/
BTW, you might be interested in this forum thread.

This won't be a long term, thing, but a one shot weekend of back to back sessions during an event for Fantasy grounds this weekend. Info here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?44380-FG-Daze-3-Day-5-session-Run-of-my-PF-conversion-of-Sega-s-Shining-Force
If you are interested, let me know.
You should look to expand beyond Skype. Their are other, and better, platforms that you can play on for free as well. My personal favorite is Fantasy Grounds, and if the GM has an ultimate license (many do) you can play for free; http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group I have issues with the Roll20 company, but you can play for free there too; https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search/ You can also find games using Battlegrounds, d20 Pro, & Map Tools.
Here's the wiki for Fatnasy Grounds I'm not a terribly experienced user, but for the most part I just use Fantasy Grounds as a Dm to read off modules and stuff. You can import images. This guy runs through how to handle Fantasy Grounds.
I feel like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds need to merge. But I kind of gave up using either of them realistically and just host games for players. Best of luck.
http://svn.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?22736-5E-Effects-examples/page12&styleid=5
That link shows someone's dragonborn dragon breath script. The comments there also mention that a lot of those script examples are shown in the Character Sheet section of the 5E wiki.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet
There are also some really good packs of scripts available on DMsguild from Rob Twohy. He has packs for SpellEffects, RacialEffects, ClassEffects, etc. that he updates regularly. Well worth it imo. He basically did all the work for everyone and made it available pretty cheaply. Complete Works of Rob Twohy 2016 has a lot of tables and importantly has a Conditions and Effects module with 175 conditions and effects coded which can be applied to the combat tracker or copied to character sheets. Then his separate 2017 mods are Spell Effects Coding, Class Feature Effects Coding, Race Trait Effects Coding.
If you just get the coding packs alone it is around $33. IF you get the complete works 2016 for all of the other goodies instead of just the feats module from it, the whole total goes up to around $46.
Of course you can follow the examples in the wiki or scour the internet for them but the Twohy packs are all of the work right there.
Hi, AeternumNoctem!
I don't think that you're likely to find a game by posting in this sub, but check out /r/lfg or the LFG forum on the FG official website.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group
Happy gaming!
Here's a game looking for players for Curse of Strahd for 5e.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?38686-New-DM-running-Curse-of-Strahd
All you would need is the free version of Fantasy Grounds to connect and play plus Discord, which has also happens to be free.
Happy gaming!
Here's what I'd do in your situation.
Say you have a Zombie with 20hp. Average hit does 10dmg. So to kill it you need 2 head shots or 10 body shots (because it would round 2.5 down to 2)
To keep that same dmg ratio, you could double the HP of the zombie, add VULN for head shots (doubles dmg) and RESIST (halves dmg) for body shots.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Effects
The result is this:
10dmg Headshot = 20dmg
10dmg Bodyshot = 5dmg
2xHeadshots = 40dmg
8xBodyshots = 40dmg
Hello, /u/NarfiRef! I was asking a pretty similar question 4 months ago, although I focused it on using apps in tabletop gaming in general (/r/rpg/comments/3mrnz1/tabletop_rpgs_vs_mobile_apps/) where we discussed mostly focus of the players while using mobile/tablet as character sheet.
To answer your question, why there are no RPGs with real-life technology involved; well, they exist, but none of 'em is meant to be a AAA title. And the main reason can really be the one that /u/soggie mentioned - lack of financial resources. To create really complex soft/web app that covers all the rules of big RPG you need at least small team of developers capable of write this tool and update it as well. Not to mention hardware side of the problem (servers, maintenance, ...).
On the other side, classic (already existing) RPGs can be manageable through web apps (Roll20) or standalone software (Fantasy Grounds) too. I can say for myself that those platforms do a pretty good job.
(A little promo ahead.) To be honest, I created an RPG with web-app in mind more than a year ago, however it was more like test-application to find out limits of my own javascript framework. This year I created more lightweight (and finally available in english) web-app that was meant to replace both classic paper character sheet and GM's notes. It was created strictly for game [Treshold] (/r/RPGdesign/comments/4558dq/treshold_system_criticism_please/) and all by myself in my free time in about month. If you give it a glimpse browse it through, you can easily manage how much time a proper RPG app development would take.
Thanks! Yeah I had Dynamic Lighting as it's own category because it's kind of a big deal to me, but you're right it should be under features. I'll do that.
As far as Licensed Material goes, personally I will be using this for more than just WotC games. Looks like from their wiki that they support more than just WotC games though. Any experience with other systems?
I'll piggy back here. Also try to find a group in your area or join an online game via Roll20, FantasyGrounds, or the like. I'm sure there are several in and around Dublin. Also, check out the Critical Role series on YouTube. The rules they use are very homebrewed, however; they have one of (if not the) most interesting and entertaining games I've seen online.
Well the base CoreRPG ruleset will let you play almost any RPG out there. And the community has built a bunch of rulesets that has some automation for different systems.
See list at the bottom http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
What are you looking at using it with?
I made the following changes:
-Nyss get +1 to perception rolls.
-Intellectual/Cunning get +1 to damage and attack rolls.
-Mighty characters get an extra die on damage rolls.
-You can now pick the skill for weapons to use.
-Fixed typos in library for weapon skill names.
-Feat points are now capped, and double clicking on the feat point box will send a message to chat that you have used a feat point.
-Holding shift and rolling from the character sheet now boosts the roll.
-Holding alt while rolling from the character sheet now gives the roll [VIRTUOSO] (add a die, drop lowest).
-Critical fails and auto-successes are now shown in the roll description when they occur.
-Magic attacks now correctly use a seperate routine for calculating the roll.
-Other misc bug fixes.
You can get the Fantasy Grounds "virtual tabletop" at http://www.fantasygrounds.com/
There are ways to play tabletop roleplaying games online using things called VTT's or virtual tabletops.
Roll20 is a very popular one.
Fantasy Grounds in another.
But all you really need is a group and a way to communicate, Google Hangouts, Skype, and a whiteboard or image sharing program are the basics.
I highly recommend Roll20 as it does everything you need and is free. There is also ways to find games on forums or looking for group functions on those VTT sites I mentioned.
There is also a subreddit for finding groups here http://www.reddit.com/r/LFG
Note true, there's quite a bit that can be done for face to face game, both with Roll20, Maptool or Fantasy Grounds.
Hmm, I can't find the full set as a single store item; I limited my search to WotC, and all I see are the individual monster packs, individual class packs, the basic rules, and complete monster/class packs. Are the complete packs what you meant?
Can a player save their character for later if they're using content only the DM has? Would they be able to view/use it later if the DM isn't there? It says that the free version can't save characters - could the DM copy a free player's character after they've made it, save it for them, and then open it for them at the next session? Let's say that we pass around the DM baton around - could a player use another player's content, or is it only the DM's?
Money's tight for a few players in my group, and they just bought the books. =/ It sounds like if everyone buys the Fantasy Ground license and the DM buys the complete class pack, it would probably be worth it, though. It looks like it supports customization pretty well, but I'll check out how the demo performs (eventually). I suspect our group will mostly stick with homebrewed monsters, anyway - that's how we rolled with 4e in the past, at least.
Thanks for answering the questions! The FAQ doesn't go into that much detail, haha. It kind of sucks that the license is per system and non-transferable even between systems that you own, though. But since the very next question is about transferring the license to a new system, I'm also a bit confused on that, haha.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/buyFG/
If you've already watched all those videos, then go to the Wiki and look at the 4E videos (3 of them) from Xorn 2010. It's 4E ruleset shown, but everything in there is done without fancy library modules.
Fantasy Grounds is hands down, balls-out amazing. It does not require insane amounts of setup to be fantastic. Library modules are very cool and really outshine anything else out there, but are not required in the least to have a great FG experience.
I'm actually making a "Playing 5E over FG" tutorial series this week, but they won't be ready till this weekend. I'll post them up when I finish. (I'm Xorn, fyi) The focus of the videos will be to provide a Player Quickstart (PHB), Running a Game (DMG) and Building Adventures (MM), and finally an example of play. (There's one of those in that video section, too, please forgive the goofy voice modulation I used.)
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/User_Guides
The FG base install comes with 3.5, PF, 4E, and 5E rulesets, all fully functional, plus the generic "CoreRPG" which works surprisingly well as a generic ruleset.
Each ruleset has fully functional character sheets, combat trackers, and condition/effect keywords it recognizes.
And by the way, FG added a subscription option as well. For $9.99/month you can try out the ultimate license!
If it isn't clear, I love FG. I don't have anything against Roll20, but it just isn't capable of what FG can do, even fresh out of the box.
Those sorts of tools already exist, though I don't know how useable and automated they are. At this point you'd probably have to cobble your own system together, but it's being worked on.
Here's a couple links, but I know there's tons of stuff out there.
Edit: just realized this all might be out of place in an Android subredit as I think these are mostly windows apps rather than web-based.
If you want to get into D&D but don't live near anyone else with similar interests, you can always use a virtual tabletop and play online.
I'll admit, I'm plugging a program that I think deserves more attention, as it's very good at what it does, and has allowed me and a friend across the country to hook up with a random group to play D&D once a fortnight. Was pretty damn cool - shame the group disbanded.
I'm also considering doing this, and in the past I have played both all remote and local on Fantasy Grounds.
It's a great system for remote, as it's designed for it. I also found it to work very well for even local, although in that case I used it more limited like. (Mainly the mapping tools, character sheet stuff, and GM tools)
I used Fantasy Grounds II and Ventrilo for voice. The interface for FG2 is fairly quirky but they've improved quite a bit on the 4E ruleset (and it supposedly has a good 3.5E set as well, not sure about 2.0). There are a lot of community tools that help you import things from the DDI compendium which work pretty well.
Often it's nice to have other things open on another monitor, like a Youtube vid explaining how to do something, or a game walk through. It pretty much eliminates having to tab out of what you're doing.
And for some programs it's almost necessary. For example having a second monitor for Fantasy Grounds when you're the DM is so much easier compared to a single screen. Even players can benefit from having another monitor in this case.
Lastly before they began making super wide monitors you could combined monitors to create a wider field of view. And once you have the extra monitors from doing that you can find all sorts of other use cases.
I don't think the 400% is specific to Big Sur, it is for all macOS versions.
This was a recent change to the /scaleUI command to support Retina displays.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/patchnotes_v4.html
[MAC] Provide higher UI scale option settings, as well as initial UI scale setting based on DPI reported.
This doesnt help playing in person but have you looked into fantsaygrounds? It's simmilar to roll20 but is standalone and has a large portion of the automation already done, and plenty of modules available that manage the rest like wildshape.
It takes some learning but there are a bunch of videos out there and fantsaygrounds college run seminars and games on their discord.
If you want to play on a VTT then check out Fantasy Grounds. For players it's free to play if your GM has the ultimate edition. It also has the largest VTT marketplace for Starfinder content. I run a weekly Starfinder game and my players and I like the software. There is also a free community supported site called Fantasy Grounds College. You can learn to play all kinds of RPG games using Fantasy Grounds and find groups to play with.
Sounds like you are looking for a Virtual Table Top (VTT)?
Roll20 (free for general use with some paid perks)
Fantasy Grounds (pay once)
Warforged are fun! In fantasy grounds to add the effect, click the faint magnifying glass that allows you to change speed, initiative, and AC on the main tab of the character sheet and and a bonus of three to the warforged's AC. For the great weapon fighting, open weapon properties, the magnifying glass to the right of the weapon on the actions tab, and set reroll to 2.
Here is a detailed link to the weapon page of the fantasy grounds wiki. Highly recommend this wiki as a great source of information, especially for common feat and fighting style bonuses:
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet#Creating_a_weapon
The fantasy grounds forums are also a great source of information and tend to be more active than this subreddit, especially for technical support type questions.
I prefer Fantasy Grounds myself. I'm running a Call of Cthulhu campaign right now and FG works great. FG Con is coming up in April where you can join games for free. Definitely worth checking it out.
You could easily use Fantasy Grounds for this. Just run a second instance which connects as the player and hook your computer up to the TV, extend your display, and put this player instance on the TV.
If you want you can even use your TV as a battle map using the following extension: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?33834-Map-resize-to-TV-resolution-for-Face-To-Face-games
This thread will probably be of help. :)
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?15531-Herolab-to-FG-PC-Import-Tutorial
That is possible although mechanical speaking it would be just a digital notecard as in a normal game.
But if you have a item in your inventory you can set a "location" in an input field besides the item name. This "location" would be another item in your inventory under which FG would list indented all the items that have this item set as a location. With that you can indeed place all your other items in your backpack item (the item that you set as location for the other items), when you then deselect (it remains in the inventory but is not marked as carried) the location item FG will also deselect all the items that have this item set as their location and recalculate your carrying weight.
This might also be helpful. Although I would recommend to watch FantasyGrounds on YouTube because it should showcase its possibilities more than a wall of text.
Yeah, on the action tab, each power (in this case spells, but can apply to class/racial powers defined as well) can have multiple actions associated with it. There are 4 basic types of actions that can be added: Cast (to make an attack roll or force a saving throw), Damage, Heal, and Effect. The effect option can be used to add a huge variety of effects. If you want more info on the effects it can add, you can read about it on the FG wiki here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Effects
Because each power can have multiple actions, you can do things like create versions of a spell that cast at a higher level. For example, if a spell does 5d6 damage at 3rd level and 7d6 at 4th level, you can create 2 damage actions, one for 5d6 and one for 7d6. So you can tell the DM, I'm casting this at 4th level, then click the 7d6 roll for damage.
I'm running a weekend long event, it's not standard pathfinder, but looking for players, link to info here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?44380-FG-Daze-3-Day-5-session-Run-of-my-PF-conversion-of-Sega-s-Shining-Force
It's a show up, grab a premade and do a battle chess type conversion of an old Tactical RPG genesis game as well. So not your standard TTRPG. That said, if you want to learn something, 5 sessions friday through sunday this weekend.
I can't help with Roll20 as I don't use it, but if you wanted to look into Fantasy Grounds you can check out the Fantasy Grounds College for help. There's also a Discord server and everyone is pretty active and helpful.
There's also the Fantasy Grounds reddit and official forums if you have further questions. There are also lots of YouTube videos for Fantasy Grounds and I can provide you some links if you're interested.
I can't tell you which VTT to choose, that's a decision you have to make (and your group if you already have one). It depends on your budget, what systems you want to play, and features you are looking for, as well as which one you like using the best.
Happy gaming!
Fantasy Grounds ( http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php ) seems like what you could be looking for as a comparison. AFAIK it's one of the first to use tech to blend tabletop style gaming and long distance interaction.
I can already tell you I won't fill out the form though.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/patchnotes.html
This software is pretty consistently updated. I've not studied the licensing scheme they use for the software or the rulesets, but I would imagine it would require a little bit of research to develop a stable crack.
No one is running a groupbuy to develop a crack for it though.
Fantasy Grounds is another option for online play. You'd use Discord for voice and FG for maps, sheets, dice and everything else. 5E stuff just had a big price drop too, and there's a sale currently, so a good time to start.
If anyone has purchased within the last 30ish days, get with Smiteworks customer support and you can get a refund to repuchase on the 15th.
There is Fantasy Grounds. It's a paid application but you can just get the Standard license and that would do what you want. Run two instances, one as a player and one as a GM. The player instance is what you display on the projector. Using your GM view you can mask maps and only reveal portions. You can apply grids and drop tokens on there to represent characters and monsters. You can also use the combat tracker, manually enter initiative (or roll it for monsters or everyone) and always know who's next and quickly. I do that for my offline games and it works great.
You can also pick up Fantasy Grounds on Steam. Every few months the licenses go on sale for about 20/25% off. There's also a subscription available if you want. You don't need an internet connection either to run it and all maps and such are local to your computer too.
If you have any questions just ask and I'd be happy to help out!
Fantasy Grounds does take some time to get used to. Way too much of its coolness is hidden. I've been DMing with it for just over a year now and I'm still finding things I didn't know about it.
I have found the folks who populate the official Fantasy Grounds forums to be generally very helpful.
If I may suggest; find and bookmark their 5E Effects page. It lists all the info you'll need to automate everything that FG will let you automate. Knowing how to quickly build a custom spell effect or temporary condition is what's kept me happy with the system this year.
A lot of the automation you are wanting can be done in FG, but requires modification on either the GM's part of the player's part.
For example, the Hex spell should be updated with effects for each possible ability to give disadvantage. (See here for more information on 5e Effects) and for Lay on Hands/Second Wind I recommend that you look into Powers
For Agonizing Blast and the Life cleric bonus, you can modify the affected spells with the increases damage/healing.
Nothing definitive has been communicated that I'm aware. Obviously they want it out as soon as it is ready but they don't want to promise anything until they know when they can deliver.
This thread: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?22089-Fantasy-Grounds-Unity-engine&highlight=unity
Has more information on the Unity version from the developers. Lots of comments from the community as well so lots to sift through but should keep you going for an hour or so!
That is all I need, Yortmaster, do me a favor and sign up to the Fantasy Grounds website, you will need to grab the demo application if are new to it.
The page has some more info about the game
Here's the LFG forum for Fantasy Grounds: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group
Also check out the one-shot subforum too, it's not quite as active but take a look and reply to anything recent that interests you, they may be running another game in the future.
What about using the community supported Teamspeak server? https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?17071-Voicechat!-Community-TeamSpeak3-Server
Linking Syrinscape to it. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Linking_TeamSpeak_%26_Syrinscape
And using DOE's Sound Extension to setup a sound board. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?31369-DOE-Sound-Extension&highlight=Syrinscape
I'm interested in swrpg online. FWIW http://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php has a player made star wars plugin for it. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?24151-Star-Wars-Edge-of-the-Empire-Age-of-Rebellion-Force-and-Destiny-v2-ruleset
I'm available about 7cst or later, mostly weeknights.
Well building campaigns OFFLINE for one. Enhanced Rules Automation (Effects, Damage Types, resistances, conditions, spell automation, etc) for two.
You can research here:
I found a group when I posted on the Fantasy Grounds LFG forum. Head on over and create a free account. The group that I'm playing with said it was fine that I was using the free version of FG. If you're open to playing 3.5/PF in addition to 5 (I haven't seen a lot of 4e posts myself) I think you'd have an easier time finding someone.
In addition to the suggestions others have provided, there is an app called "Fantasy Grounds" that is made for table-top RPG players, that allows you to DM and let your players see only what they should. I have never used it, but it sounds pretty cool, from what I've read about it.
It depends on what you mean by "the power failed". If it failed to get through a given resistance, it was probably due to a nuance of spelling or capitalization of the type.
This is how I would program it.
Here is a reference for a bunch of Fantasy Grounds programming.
I find it to be a fantastic piece of software.
Obviously it is far more expensive than alternatives like roll20, however no other virtual tabletop comes close to its functionality.
So really its just how much to do actually play RPG's for it to be worth it.
I can give more details if your looking for specific use cases, but really most of the details on what can be done in Fantasy Grounds can be found here. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/buyFG/
Looks like Fantasy Grounds, they partnered with Wizards officially. It is a paid program for more complex features so I can't say much about it as roll 20 gets the job done for me for free.
Here is the link
I use Fantasy Grounds, have for over a decade.
Per JPG >"We're planning to release a module as close to official release date as development allows."
Another + for roll20.
If you're playing D&D 5E, they have partnered with Fantasy Grounds which may be worth the money for saving prep energy and time. That said, Roll20 can still handle a 5E game too.
For the Audio/Video, I recommend using Skype. It generally works pretty well for the conferencing, as it can be connected with almost all devices.
Roll20 Integrates with Google Hangouts, which I've not tested as much as Skype personally. I've heard more anecdotal negative things about freezing and dropping from it then Skype. Take that one with a large grain of salt, though.
I haven't had time to implement tokens and imagery yet, but during this pre-release schedule to version 1.0, I will be assembling that stuff. I'm currently looking for help in that regard.
To install, go to your FG App Data folder. Put the .mod file found under the Git Hub page release section into the modules folder and launch FG. When you start a 5e campaign, open up the Library window and click modules. You can enable it there.
Hello potential prospect, I'll give you the same information that I gave to another person. If you want to get in contact with me, either add me on Steam (Qyboor, the one with the Studio Ghibli logo) or message me back here.
If you are interested in joining I would be glad to have you on. Also this is both my first time with the ruleset and everyone's first time, so you can learn with just about everyone else. If you have played D&D in any of it's variations you'll probably have a good grasp on how combat goes.
If you are interested, let me know a time when you will be around so that we can set up a character. I'm around for the rest of tonight as well as Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It might be difficult to get you into the next Sunday game, but I will definitely do my best for the next one.
And finally, if you decide to join, you'll need a couple of things. We have a Teamspeak server that we use (IP Address 108.34.23.167). We also use Fantasy Grounds (http://www.fantasygrounds.com/ or it can be downloaded from Steam if you need it). You can also hop on Sunday if you would like to see how I conduct my sessions.
Anyways, I think that is everything, if you have anymore questions let me know and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.
PDF's and other stuff for Game:

While there is quite a bit in that document, what I would recommend looking through is the Core Rulebook, especially at the classes, skills, and combat section. There's also some other neat stuff in there if you want to skim through it, but it's not quite that big of a deal at the moment.
MUCH more advanced http://www.fantasygrounds.com/screenshots/ It's high quality and better than roll20 in every way, it's just not free (unless DM has ultimate edition.)
It does everything you want x 100
One thing that might help is that Fantasy Grounds is not a game, it's a tool to let you play a tabletop RPG (like D&D, Shadowrun, Rolemaster, etc) with a group of people. But it's not designed for a single person to play.
You can find a bunch of games here that you can try and join http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group-%28formerly-Guild-House%29
If you are looking for the single player D&D games might I suggest GoG? http://www.gog.com/promo/weekend_promo_hasbro_dd_classics_bundle_200815
You can always connect to yourself by typing localhost as the IP. This is useful for getting familiar with the UI from a player's perspective. If you aren't connecting to a game you're using the GM's UI.
There are forums on the Fantasy Grounds community site http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-LFG-Looking-for-Group-(formerly-Guild-House) that you can find groups in. There's also a calendar available for you to browse open groups.
The UI takes a bit of getting used to.
Are you planning to DM or be a player in another game? What version of the game did you pick up?

Start with "The Basics" under "Tabletop".
Don't forget Pathfinder guys!
You may have a place that holds weekly Pathfinder Society events. It depends on where you live of course.
Their whole manual is available online.
You might be interested in checking out Fantasy Grounds which allows you to play over a virtual table top with others. People are very friendly and you look for a group among a number of different rule sets.
The best way I can think of off hand is to simply throw it all on a note and share that with the party.
You could also give the Locations / Towns / Shop extension a try here: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20794-Locations-%28inc-Shops-amp-Towns%29-Databse-Extension
I haven't used it myself, so can't really make any promise to it's capability.
Have you tried posting in the LFG forum on their website? Seems reasonably active. Though all my games have been with people I actually know from places I used to live, so I don't have experience trying to find new online groups.
Here's the most recent thread on it in the forums. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?23793-Any-easy-way-to-handle-druid-Battle-Wild-Shape-%28circle-of-the-moon%29&highlight=druid
Why not use FG for FFG's SWRPG? Down side is that you won't have the books in the prog.
All GM licenses (including Steam licenses) are being upgraded to ultimate licenses for the next week as part of our support for FG Con.
Happy gaming, JPG
In their FAQ, they say that you buy a license for a system which is not allowed to be transferred. But then the next question is about transferring it between systems, and they actually give an answer that isn't "buy another license," so I'm not sure they're totally decided on that either, haha.
If my eidolon has multiple bite attacks from multiple heads, do I have to take the Trip evolution for each one? I haven't found any rulings or opinions except for this thread saying Trip applies to all bites.
You can still play tabletop RPGs online. You can use:
Personally I use Fantasy Grounds.
You need some VOIP software like Skype or use Google Hangout if you have Google plus account.
You don't happen to have them each as loose individual graphics files for use in applications like Fantasy Grounds, do you? I'd like to be able to import wolf.png or goblin.png as tokens in game in FG. Also, a list of what is what would be helpful for those who may be brand new to D&D 5E and don't know their goblins from their bugbears. :)
Fantasy Grounds has a few parsers people use for importing text from self scanned PDFs. Any information from the basic rules and online PDFs is already setup to create XML files for use with FGs module system.
