Haxtec Glow in The Dark Metal Dice Set Glowing Blue Silver W/ Dragon Dice Bag 7 Die D&D Dice Set for Dungeons and Dragons RPG Games-Silver Glowing Blue-V2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QJ1LSLW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Tpe-Cb4E7VHGZ, I think these are the dice, anyhow I'm gonna order them
Really awesome job! For anyone interested, I made some portal effect videos that you can play on your phone, all of them loop friendly and a version with timers(15, 10 and 5 minutes) where the portal closes slowly, for your timed encounters.
And also a silly tutorialexplaining how to do a version of what OP did, albeit much less cool looking!
I got a similar looking set on Amazon (the entire thing is one product, it all comes together) When I started playing DnD a few months ago. It's surprisingly affordable! I spent about ten bucks for five sets of multicolored dice:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ABST9S4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kLppAbC4KDKWF
Can also use these instead of glue.
WizKids Dungeons & Dragons Black Dragon Trophy Plaque https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBWS7QJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sojoCb24C9G2Q
They use to have the red dragon but this was all I could find right now
So, one of the first things a lot of people turn too is having minis. It adds the physical to the combat a lot of people want. As the DM you may want minis for your "baddies". There are tons of kits out there but something I have come to love is these things.
Pathfinder Bestiary Pawn Box https://www.amazon.com/dp/1640782117/ref=cm_sw_r_sm_apa_glt_fabc_EWT2MNRH2Q7KRAZZWAJR
They are "from" pathfinder but there is tons of crossover. The artwork on them is fantastic and you're getting hundreds of "minis" for cheaper than just about any other method.
Edit: forgot to mention my favorite part. They have a numbering system which helps keep track of which mobs have what health count in combat.
SRD is the free content that is available as the very base of d&d, no source books required. It is also probably in the plain old monster manual, since most SRD things come from there
Tuckers is mostly GM-vs-Player cheese and "gotcha" tactics; The Art of War has little emphasis on small unit tactics or anything that would make a game fun. It's main emphasis is on your enemy not knowing stuff - not what you want in a GM-Player relationship, since the GM is the only person that knows stuff and has to communicate it second-hand to the players through a trust paradigm.
The actual ways to challenge your players aren't covered well here - present good dramatic questions, have combats that aren't about whittling down all the hp to 0 in order to win, use synergistic monsters and environmental factors that leverage the advantage against the players in a way that can be circumvented (if the players are clever).
And in the end, it's 110% more important for your players to feel challenged than it is for your players to be challenged - they're not mutually exclusive, but the ideas aren't one and the same either.
The Art of War, which emphasizes keeping information away from your enemy, is probably not the best book for a DM - who is supposed to not be the players enemy or antagonist but their partner in a group storytelling game - to be taking cues from.

Here’s Etsy. Same maker. Maybe better price/shipping depending on location. https://etsy.me/2EL8kxU
If you can afford a dry-erase whiteboard, you can afford these.
Can’t say enough good about them.
Seems this site is full of that kind of stuff. $100 on sale code lockbox meanwhile the exact same item on Amazon is $30 (same designs, default password and included rings).
I started a business last year and it really took off before the summer. Thanks to everyone around the world who purchased one, and to anyone who does so in the future.

Red and Black Dragon edition Spellbooks available here
I looked it up and found the pack with the three core books and DM screen all with alternate covers on Amazon for $199.99 plus $24.99 shipping. Amazon. Says they will be available Nov 7th and arrive December 14th if you pre-order. Given the price and the shipping time, buying at an local game store would probably be your best option.
The Fifth Edition Character Sheet is the one I use on my tablet. It lets you keep track of stuff for free, but if you pay for it you get a built-in character builder that I've found very convenient. The only thing it doesn't give you is spell descriptions, so I use D&D 5 Spellbook Cards for that. It's a free app that lets you sort spell lists and gives you complete descriptions of spells. Pretty handy!

I think as long as he credits the author he's fine.
You are incorrect, sir or ma'am. Local game shops have been selling them on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HFG969C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hbm8BbRJVC3MM
And they were even available for Pre-Order on Amazon as soon as they were announced. Soo..
That's the set of core rules you need, for now follow only what the rule booklet in the starter set says, the compendium is pretty much bunk!
Also, check out Dndbeyond.com
Happy gaming!
The 8-bit characters are from an artist named Chloe (http://azidraws.tumblr.com/post/43668843808). I found them on Tumblr and didn't even notice they were characters from The Hobbit; they really remind me of my brothers and friends. Also, the background was found on google but I can't seem to find the original artist; the only thing close was this article talking about SNK: https://kotaku.com/5977912/the-best-animated-backgrounds-of-2d-fighting-games.
Well, there's geas. Using that spell, you can command someone to do something (like to keep a secret) under penalty of death (or at least penalty of 5d10 psychic damage).
Feel free to alter the spell as you see fit.
RHoD is a collectable, apparently. But I haven't done any digging past checking amazon. Those prices could be malarkey
Well a typical roll for 1d8 is 4 or 5 and PCs get the higher (with max at 1st level) where mobs and NPCs get the lower amount for "choosing not to roll."
Here is the roll20 compendium page for commoner.

or you could use magnet tape, Should be thin enough to allow the screen to close without drilling and potentially splitting the thin wood. This roll is only $12, there's a ton of other brands and widths also.
For the very low price of 0 (yes, zero) monetary units, you can get the free basic rules and roll your own epic story and characters. Need dice, a premade adventure and perhaps some premade characters to just start playing right away without all the hassle of making your own adventures and characters? For as low as 12 dollars, you can get the Starter Set (players not included). Did you enjoy it and want to keep playing? Get the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide for around 20 dollars each.
according to roll20.net Potion of Giant's Strength needs a sliver of giant's fingernail (effect varies a bit depending on which type of giant's fingernail clippings are used)
Edit: in Skyrim a full Gaint's toe is an ingredient in some of the most valuable potions in the game, maybe that's what you're thinking of?
These are Reaper Miniatures - Spell Effects: Tentacles. You can order them on Amazon or at your local games store. Amazon Link
Also, that's not the site I linked i bought my shirt here On Amazon someone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DWWPV8B just copied my Picture and posted it you can tell cause the Image has a speck of dirt on it from the picture I posted.
It's a special dust that's used to paint fondant petals on cakes. Or you can dump it in an alcoholic beverage for A E S T H E T I C. You can get it from baking stores, or from Amazon. This is the one that I used for this gif.

I found this at a used bookstore, and it is fantastic. They have it for super cheap on Amazon it seems.
All of them but two I actually bought from a physical store, but here are the two I got online
https://diceenvy.com/collections/whats-new/products/mermagedice-set
Not 100% sure about the amazon link but the dice envy one is for sure the right one, and I’m pretty sure most of the ones I bought in person can be found on darkelfdice.com.

$30 on Amazon. Assuming you're on 5e.
Maybe a hardware store, or any sort of craft store. They are on Amazon too, but it’s for a pack of 50. There is even a comment about DnD in the reviews. lol

Hey there - I'm the creator of InfinitasDM. I'm not sure what's up with our Steam reviews being so negative, it's the complete opposite on Android (4.8/5 stars, 28 ratings).
It's a very young app, just released December 2016 so it has a lot of room for growth but I'm still quite proud of it. I think what throws a lot of people off is that it is very much not Roll20, as I was aiming for something to enhance the table, not replace it.
If you have any questions I'm happy to answer them!
u/headvoice73 - It's super awesome to see IDM spring up like this in the wild by the way! You've got an awesome setup!
Go check out Roll20.net there are tons of games looking for players and its free to be a player. (free to be a dm to but you get some extra stuff for your players if you support the development)
Here is a link to my private D&D Next resources. I got a lot of custom stuff there I think you will love. I am building a Tumblr right now to post it but you get the special edition access! All the rules and everything you need is there. Enjoy!

People should try using Roam for notetaking. I've been using it for a while and just started using it to organise my Star Wars campaign notes. You can essentially build a personal wiki for your campaign.
Edit: Great for world-building, at least.
These dice are about 20 cents each. These are probably about whats in the machine.
It’s the origin story of Drizzt Do’Urden by R. A. Salvatore. When I was young it was the first set of books I ever read that I wasn’t required in school. I highly recommend reading them if you like forgotten realms books.

There is roll20.net, among others. Or take a look at /r/lfg. Instead of bookshops, try game stores. Here are the free basic rules. And the D&D 5e Starter Set is quite cheap nowadays, and has everything you need to play, except players.
Roll20 is a phenomenal service and I highly recommend it. I suspect that a lot of other people will recommend it as well. If you really hate Roll20, there are a few other alternatives - Try Fantasy Grounds. There's also one on Steam, but I forget the term. Tabletop Simulator, I think?
There are also countless RPGs out there that aren't DND. If you give me a clearer idea of what your gaming group prefers, I can probably find a game that is right up your alley. DND is a great game, but don't default to it just because it's the most famous one. If you answer this mini questionaire, I can give you more tailored advise:
I have the packet with some extra PDF's that I found on this subreddit that are really useful. You can download them from here. The only think I don't have are the pregen adventures, but if you really need them I'm sure I could dig them up from somewhere.
https://www.amazon.com/Chessex-Role-Playing-Play-Mat/dp/B0015IUAAG
You can find these at most FLGS's and of course amazon in a wide variety of sizes. Top quality game mat, been using one for my campaigns for a while now. The picture OP posted looked like a printed paper, not reusable surface.
You can try getting a replacement from Wizards like the guy said below. If that doesn't work, the 5e Handbook is only $20.98 on Amazon now.
First things first, you should head on over to r/lfg and look to see if there might already be a group set up that tickles your fancy.
Personally, I prefer playing at a table, but I really have wanted to try out Roll20 which is set up for online play.
I have played a game or two over skype which hasnt been terrible, but personally I recommend everybody at least try to play a game at a table once because it's just how the game is meant to be played and you will at least have that experience.
I understand that finding a group and meeting regularly isn't easy for everyone, and I'm not trying to discourage online play at all. I just try to urge everyone to play in person because it is by far the most fun, and easier to forge bonds with the DM/Players.
I think the best use is Roll20 or another virtual table top, as it's scaled to 70 PPI. A lot of these creators' Patreons will offer higher rez for printing and then you can use something like https://rasterbator.net/ to break them down for home printing.
"Dark Mirror" originally published in Realms of Valor. Can also be found in The Collected Stories: The Legend of Drizz
I'm not going to lie, I was saying it that way as a rhetorical flourish. You just sent me two new sets of dice that I would put in my top 5. So you probably have a leg up on me, as far as fancy dice goes.
I may not have had a perfect set of dice till today, but here's some shiny click clacks that won my heart.
Also do you have links to buy the three dice you have shown me today?
https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/wiki/resourcelist
Links to the free basic Players and DM rules, characters, OGL, adventures, etc.
The Starter Set, aka Lost Mines of Phandelver, is less than $13 on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Set-Roleplaying/dp/0786965592
If you go with the starter set, I suggest sticking with the pregenerated characters because they have story tie-ins.
these are the pathfinder mini's they come in boxes of like 400 or so different minis. the boxes are different themes like humanoids, monsters, stuff like that. they're usually around $30 on amazon, although i've seen them at half price books for around $20.
I believe the easiest way is buying the $20 starting kit. It has pregen characters, basic rules, and a fun adventure to run. Only other book you need is the Player’s Handbook, and you don’t HAVE to have it if you buy the starting kit. Good to have for reference though.
Amazon is the best place to buy material, normally $5-20 cheaper than shops. Also great if you have prime!
Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786965592/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_G71dBbS55YNEB
Baking stores have it, it's also called edible glitter, glitter dust, lustre glitter... or you can head over to Amazon, who also have it. This is the one I used in this gif.
Local game store deal for $170 (10% off on preorders), although I think Amazon offers it for a significant price jump.
Edit: Correction, they are slightly cheaper on Amazon but support your LGS.
I use the app 5th Edition Spellbook, although I think it's only for Android.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5&hl=en_US
You can buy jumbo polyhedral dice that should help as long as you're careful not to buy the foam ones for toddlers. But a dice tower might be more practical, one of you without arthritis could even make him one for cheap!
The starter kit is pretty affordable. Also, you can create an account on Roll20 for free and look for a game there. There are plenty of options for different games and the GM will tag it "New Players Welcome" if they are down to show you the ropes.

Have fun!
Unless you're in some remote area, like the middle of a desert or an island with no other inhabited places relatively close by, odds are that you can find other people with whom you'll be able to play. Or if that's more convenient for you, you can try playing online, for example on roll20.net. Either way, r/lfg is a good resource to find people to play with, both online and offline.
If you don't mind spending some cash, Campaign Cartographer will help you make rather professional looking maps. Price starts at $45, and there are lots of add ons/plug ins.
EDIT: I haven't used it in a long time, but it had a severe learning curve back in the beginning. I would hope it's a tad more user friendly now.
Just so you know, there are official cards like this already for 5e (full version, not kids version).
https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Spellbook-Cards-Cleric/dp/B01N4C1EHP
I play digitally, so everything is already loaded for my players, but if we ever played in person you bet I would have these ready for certain players. They have the same problem.
The link to hottopic is the starter set as mentioned. You can get it cheaper off of amazon. Linked here is the companys official dungeons and dragons page. https://www.amazon.com/Wizards-RPG-Team/e/B009KAKQIC/
If he is starting out for the first time, the starter set is great. If he has any experience in table top rpgs or if he does know a good deal about dnd from all the shows he watches, i recommend buying him the players handbook. Its a hardcover book, that goes 20xs more in depth then the starter box and he will never need another book again unless he gets into building and running his own dnd games. https://www.amazon.com/Players-Handbook-Dungeons-Dragons-Wizards/dp/0786965606/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
Other gift ideas are Dice Set for about $7, maybe a small battle map from Chessex for $20, perhaps dnd figurines for $10-$20 for a handful.
Keep in mind the only gifts he will need to actually play the game in person are these two options.
Beginner
1.) Dnd Starter Set: Comes with Short version of rules, dice, character sheets, and camping book. ($20)
Novice - Advanced 2.) Players Hand Book (Complete set of dnd rules used for play) and set of Dice. ($35)
First: The rules are free. You can see the basic rules and extras that have been released for free here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules
That'll get you started. One of you needs to decide to be the DM (that is, the one that mediates the game, controls all the monsters and non-player characters, and tells the story), and the other players (ideally, 3-5 of them), who each control one of the "main characters".
Second: You can get a great adventure (designed to teach players and DMs), minis, some dice, and some example character sheets that spell out how character advancement works, by buying the Starter Set. It's about $15 on Amazon, or you can check local game stores to get it quicker.
https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Wizards-Team/dp/0786965592
If you have the means, I do suggest buying additional dice as well to make it easier, but one set for the table to share will get you started.
Third: Dive right in. The DM will need to be the most prepared, and should read through the adventure (at least the first couple chapters) ahead of time. Plan out a block of time to play, and make it a regular thing (once a week for ~4 hours is the "typical" schedule -- although you can play a shorter or longer time, play monthly or every 2 weeks, or even play multiple times per week. As long as you have a consistent time everyone in your group can make, you can make the game work).
That's it! The rest, you figure out as you go.
Basically after a year and half of Dnd taking up a good chunk of my life I have decided start putting my Art skill to use in Making some fun shirt for abound the table, and It helps that pretty much all Day all I Do is think about my games, So after after polling a ton of Dnd Discords, and My group I came to conclusion that people like dice, dragons and fire! if you Like you can find the Shirt on amazon here
Since you like those Spell cards, maybe you'll want one of these to go with it. I make pocket sized Spellbooks and have them available on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/SPELLBOOK-Red-Dragon-Guile-Design/dp/B07SLBXYQ1
The trees themselves I bought off of amazon but the problem with them is that the bases are made of wire and they do not stand up on their own.
So I went to Hobby Lobby and got some wooden round cut outs and went over to the miniature section and got a basing kit like this one.
I drilled a small hole into each base and inserted the wire trunk of the tree. I Made sure the bottom was flush, and super glued the tree into the hole.
I then took the base glue (which is a lot like elmers) and covered the wooden round in it and sprinkled on the model dirt like glitter.
A few of the tuffs of grass stuck on and you have your tree miniatures.
I'd suggest posting this over at /r/lfg. That's the subreddit dedicated for finding groups. Otherwise I'm not sure if you use an online platform like Roll20or Fantasy Grounds, but they also have forums that you can post on.
https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Armor#content
Plate also requires at least 15 ate to start. Start with chainmail (A.C. 16) and a shield and you can have 18 A.C. to start. Honestly that's rather good.
You also have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that rely on moving silently. Its only for checks that rely on moving silently. You're no better at hiding. just moving quietly.
The Realm of Aesen is the world in which me and my closest friends play D&D 5e in. It had a humble beginning where i only made a very small location map with a few towns strewn in and it has grown into this world map which it is today.
Summarize of the realm: The realm has five major factions. The Northern Kingdoms, the Last Sovereign, the Order of the Raven, the Empire of the Gods and the Emerald Enclave.
The Northern Kingdoms hold the north protected by a barrier of mountains from the rest of the realm. Here the all the dwarfish kingdoms have rose to unite under the banner of the High-King.
The Last Sovereign control the Aspaarian deserts of the east as well as much of the land surrounding it as well. Here all races who want to seek a better life live in coexistence in the huge cities erected by the now deceased Sovereign Gwyneth.
The Order of the Raven lies in the murky and dark south of the realm. Here the landscape is harsh and the reign of the King even harsher. But even the king fall under the dominion of the Raven God Nevermore, who controls the faction from the shadows.
The Empire of the Gods rest in the west as the strongest of the five major factions. The empire has always followed of the Gods of old, whom where shattered during the War of Mortality. Even though their Gods have gone, they still hold true to the traditions and principles they left behind.
The Emerald Enclave have complete and utter control of the center of the realm, they built their whole society around the dead corpse of a God, Zaw'mjir, who was the world tree and the one to control nature itself. After his passing the faction took it upon themselves to uphold his job.
I made this using the latest version of Photoshop CC and THIS brush set by Joel Pigou.
I mean, you haven't been using portable holes RAW, that's not to say it's wrong, though.
This fine black cloth, soft as silk, is folded up to the dimensions of a handkerchief. It unfolds into a circular sheet 6 feet in diameter.
You can use an action to unfold a portable hole and place it on or against a solid surface, whereupon the portable hole creates an extradimensional hole 10 feet deep. The cylindrical space within the hole exists on a different plane, so it can't be used to create open passages. Any creature inside an open portable hole can exit the hole by climbing out of it.
You can use an action to close a portable hole by taking hold of the edges of the cloth and folding it up. Folding the cloth closes the hole, and any creatures or Objects within remain in the extradimensional space. No matter what's in it, the hole weighs next to nothing.
Try Gimp or the program [Paint.net](getpaint.net)
They are image editing software. That's free and you might be able to do some stuff with them.
Get good scans of the maps so you can use those files instead of pictures
Bookdepository is also a place you can find it and other books for lower prices for people unable or unwilling to purchase to amazon. They have free worldwide shipping!
You should check out roll20. It is the Skype of d&d with interactive maps and dice rolling. Many people run campaigns, one offs, or anything in between through it. Some of the options are p2p, but there is a collection of F2P games as well.
That way, instead of playing a D&D-esque game, you could play D&D.
((I believe there is even a subreddit dedicated to finding people remote games, but cannot think of the name))
Don't have time for another group right now, but my advice... check out Fantasy Grounds or Roll20, and give something like TeamSpeak a shot rather than Skype.
Every group is different, but from playing online in the past, I've found that you don't really need video or anything else Skype has to offer, and TeamSpeak helps make file transfers easier.
I can vouch that Fantasy Grounds is amazing for online play, but a little complicated. I can't vouch for Roll20, but it seems pretty popular and might be simpler.
If you're worried about 5e being replaced then keep in mind that has already happened for 2e, 3e, 3.5e and 4e. It's not a big deal; the old books still work fine.
Don't worry about "power creep" in 5e; the design of the system is bounded so the numbers are all very balanced in practice. It's also the newest system and likely the one that you will have the easiest time finding a group for.
If you find an existing group you'll want to go with whatever system they are using, if you start your own then IMO 5e is by far the best of all D&D editions; characters feel a lot more flavorful than earlier editions, the numbers crunching is much simpler while still providing enough depth.
As well as looking for a real-life group check out Roll 20; it's not as good as playing in person, but second beast is better than nothing and scheduling is easier when you don't need to be in the same physical space.
Get some music.

Just have a computer nearby with a browser pointing towards 3 or 4 tabs. A few for https://tabletopaudio.com/ for some environmental stuff, but then find a few youtube playlists for battle music or creepy music, maybe some general fantasy flute shit. When it's time to ramp up the intensity, hit play. Make sure you turn it off after the players have moved from a situation.

soundtrack for Shadow of the colossus is always great for battles.

Soundtrack for Myst (especially the original game and the first sequel) are great for creepy. just listen to "swing vines".
I use Wikia. It takes a bit to learn the coding to make any cool formatting changes (like making templates and infoboxes), but it's cool because you can create a page for each adventure and different wiki pages for each NPC, for the PC's themselves, and all that. It also allows the players to add things, too, if you want to allow them.
It's a public page that everyone can view and reference and I always reference the wiki when we all start a new session so we can recap what happened last session.
29-12 = 17, not 15.
I made a quick script to test this method, and it broke down pretty fast, giving: "hellq bctki yp cac ql vfg rgkrjg ug zgj kxxcx yxploi cx btdsb yj yle utx suqx hfvol ba ire fna yc jyxc ceglvq ql vff fsn vme"
Okay, so if I assume the cypher was made wrong, and your DM assumed there was only 24 letters of the alphabet, I get: "hello davgm st wew uf bxm lmevdm mm rmd qpfsf qfhrgq sf tbvat ed efk oxr wour lbxkn xc gre fna aa lubw gakhxm sh xbj bwh bgk"
Which is closer to what /u/Jurph was trying to get it to say. But it still doesn't fit, but seeing as how "g" is only 2 off from "i", maybe your DM did it by hand and messed up a few steps?
I'll keep working on it until I get bored, but this is as far as I have gotten so far. Script for those who are interested: https://pastebin.com/3FhMkWjL
Last Update: Interestingly, the letter "p" is never used in either the ciphered text, or the partial message given. Newest Script: http://jsbin.com/ficezuhise/edit?js,console
A huge help is the return of the lazy dm.
It teaches you what the essential preparations for a game are, how to overprepare and to recycle npcs/enemies/locations/etc your players avoided
Don't spend more money than you have to ;-) Get yourself the so called Starter Set. It includes an abbreviated version of the rules (so it's easier to understand), some cool extra stuff like some dice, some character sheets, and a beginners adventure ... so you have some tactile experience having actual paper in hand. It should be around 20 bucks, and you can spend a dozen awesome sessions with it.
If after that you're hooked, it's enough time to sink into the hobby of buying expensive books which content you'll end up looking up online anyways ;-) (just kidding, kinda sorta)
Have fun with the worlds greatest hobby!

Edit: The Set looks like this, you can order it online or buy it at the most rpg/comic book stores, i'd say.
Lost Mines of Phandelver was my first time DMing as well and I gotta say your drawing is better than mine was for Cragmaw. fair warning though if you intend to keep drawing your dungeons you'll need a lot more room
I was using 4 sets of these and was still running low on room to draw later on in the campaign. https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Gaming-Paper-Erase-Tiles/dp/B073V3W83Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?adgrpid=55088888294&dchild=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwtJ2FBhAuEiwAIKu19t58iPtO4mFbFrxORn9-bCR70pNug3cgIjybOOGJWM_K5otcsjl1wBoC05wQAvD_BwE&hvadid=274731590570&h...
Not sure who did the art—not at home now, but if you like dnd art check out this book on Amazon. Basically covers the history of the game from when Gygax and co. were doing medieval battle rules to the 5.0. For an old dude it sure brought back a bunch of memories. https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Art-Arcana-History/dp/0399580948/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Art+of+dungeons+and+dragons&qid=1613000248&sr=8-2
The D&D starter kit comes with pre-generated character sheets, dice, basic rules and a really cool adventure called The Lost Mines of Phandelver. There's a lot in this adventure, we played it for five sessions and didn't see half of the things in it! It's a great start, and the adventure book assumes that you are a brand new DM with little or no experience. I highly recommend it!
amazon link but get it from a local game store if you can, it's always cool to support real businesses :-)
You should pick up the Starter Set (available at Amazon for $12.85). That will give you a few pregenerated characters based on the 5th edition basic rules, an adventure to run them through, complete with monster stats, and an abbreviated version of the basic rules, enough to run the pregens. You don't have to use the pregens, though, if you have the books.
I would recommend that you try to run a combat, by yourself. You can choose a few pregenerated characters, of which you can find plenty online, and you can work up a quick encounter with a few goblins. This is more to get you used to playing with the rules of the game, running a combat, and the like. As you have questions about rules, write them down, then look up the answers and write those down along with a page reference. (I personally try to cover character sheets with page references; in the event you or the players need to look something up in play, it's nice to be able to know which page to turn directly to.)
And don't sweat the details. Often times, if a player wants to do something you have no idea how to handle, come up with a DC and let them roll with a stat+skill. Make sure you and they know what happens if they succeed and what happens if they fail. At least 75% of the time that will probably be how the game handles it anyway.
The content on the official site is currently for D&D 5th Edition (aka 5E or D&DNext).
Here is an amazon link to what the players handbook. That will help confirm you are getting the right on (whether buying from there or just seeing what the cover looks like). https://www.amazon.com/Players-Handbook-Dungeons-Dragons-Wizards/dp/0786965606

There seems to be 1 left on Amazon, which is where I got mine.
Not OP, but I think it’s this one I got it a couple of months ago, and you can remove the foam inserts to turn it into a dice tray as well, it’s a fantastic purchase.
I second roll20 or r/lfg to find a group. Roll20.net especially if you don't mind playing online (though you can find offline groups using it's lfg section). My group that I've been playing with for years is spread out in California and I'm out near Boston and we've been using Roll20's virtual tabletop for a while now and it's been great!
As a player- all you will really need is the players handbook. Have you played a session yet? Find the gaming community at your local library or online at sites like Roll20. There are also some great discord servers that you'll see pop up here from time to time that are dedicated to getting groups together.

Honestly, keep an eye out to see if Reaper does a third Bones Kickstarter. I got in on both, and the price/mini ($0.40) is pretty much unbeatable.

I bought this one for a friend for his birthday.

but unfortunately it seems to be out of stock.
But there are some more on amazon that aren't horribly priced.

All in all they make solid dice bags. A little heavier sure but you never have to worry about them tearing and dropping dice.
(BTW sorry for the horrible formatting. I'm on mobile and it's a bitch to get links to work.)
I'd take a look at roll20.net they have online games, but if that's not your forte they still have PHB, Monster manual, and a bunch of other resources, and if for whatever reason they don't have something there are a ton of fan wikis you could check out
I also forgot to mention in my comment above, that Wizards of the Coast lets you download the Basic Rules for 5th edition for free, on their website.
http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
They also have some pre-generated characters that you can download, as well. They have class guides, and if you sign in, you can make the basic characters right on the site, and it will guide you through the process. Or you can just look at the Classes on the Roll20 website.

1.- No, but you can play for free if you don't mind not having all the options. Just google the free basic rules.
2.- The Starter set is the cheapest way to get started, less than 30 dollars.
3.- Yes, platforms like roll20.net allow that.
4.- You find people with whom you can play, you read the rules, the rest is up to your imagination and the dice. A more in-depth explanation would take rather long and be very wordy, and wouldn't do you a better service than you reading the rules.
5.- Not in my game, but if your DM allows it, you can do whatever.
6.- Anywhere.
7.- Take a look here
8.- If you can form coherent thoughts, you're old enough. If you're not dead, you're young enough.
9.- Sure.
10.- Get pen and paper, and write.
11.- Have fun. Don't ruin the fun of others. Respect the decisions of the DM.
You could also turn this into a quest-line Maybe she can't figure it out, or it's above her skill, and needs to find someone more powerful to help. This person could offer the information/spell as a reward for a favor/errand.
Or give her a scroll/potion of Spider Climb. Or Slippers of Spider Climbing
No worries. The dude is... a bit obscure. He's a class feature from the chain pact Warlock:

You do good work with wings, so I thought you might dig it:
