Probably because it is Mac only and a shit-ton of us DJs are on Windows.
By the way, Why does no one talk about Mixvibes Cross? It's way better and more stable than Traktor for sure. It has a lot of features that I really like. It has overlapping waveforms like Serato and Virtual DJ. The Sync can be configured to sync on phrase not just on beat. It has a MATCH feature that will search the BPM and Harmonic key of your entire library to show you what tracks will mix well with the currently playing track. It has soundcloud support (you can DJ directly from any track on Soundcloud as long as you have an Internet Connection, it works very well). I love the way the visual display shows you where the phrase start is with a triangle so I always know where the phrase is.
Also it's only $50 ($100 if you want DVS support and Video DJ mixing). It works on Mac and PC.
You need a second audio output. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - a simple USB audio adapter should be enough.
$1,200
Almost Identical to CDJ NXS systems
4-Channels
Rekordbox
Same jogwheels as the CDJ NXS 2000
It's pretty much just the controller version of the club standard. Some people even prefer it over the CDJs.
I know you want to use Serato, but I'm just throwing it out there anyways. If you're dead set on Serato with screens and you don't care about being close to club standard, get the Denon MCX8000.
For starters, check out our wiki, but I would highly recommend you purchase a copy of this book. It is an excellent reference and also touches a bit on production.
At this point, depending on your musical background, I'd recommend starting with dj'ing. Simply due to the fact that it will help you get a handle on how music is structured and really how it "works". This will hopefully help you a bit further down the road in production. In the past, DJs would turn to production as "the next step". While this isn't really the case any more as production software is so readily available, most producers will eventually have to learn how to dj at some point anyway.
Another thing would be to grab some tunes that are all from the same relative genre and practice with those. I'd recommend tech house, as it's pretty simplistically structured which will help you get a handle on beat/phrase matching, but should also help you get a handle on more advanced techniques like EQ'ing and transitions. House is fairly easy to mix, although there are lots of subtleties to mixing it well. If you'd like I can give you a list of some tracks or artists. Or if there is a genre you prefer, name that.
house and future bass mostly, with a couple other things mixed in in the spirit of the holiday. link is here if you wanna check it out!
For when you've got the hang of beat matching and want to take your mixes to the next level ...
Introducing harmonic mixing.
The fundamentals of this are rooted in music theory, more specifically the relationship between keys (don't freak out, keep reading). To simplify, certain keys sound good when mixed after the same or similar key, while others clash and sound like a train wreck.
I have classical music training and understand the relationships between musical keys. It's good knowledge to have ... HOWEVER ... as luck would have it you don't need it :)
So here's the process:
1) download the software app Mixed In Key, and a JPG of the Camelot Wheel
2) load your tracks into MIK and let it analyse them (I also get MIK to add the "key" at the start of the track name, trust me it makes it easier)
3) use the MIK system and the Camelot Wheel while mixing
4) marvel at the harmonic magic
This may sound confusing and too hard. Believe me, it's not, and once you start using it it's unlikely you will ever stop. It will add a professional sheen to your mixes.

Mixxx is free software so you have nothing to lose by trying it. It's free-as-in-freedom software, so it won't ever refuse to work or hold back features (like recording your mix) because you haven't paid someone. I recommend trying version 1.12 beta, it has a ton of fun new features. Please report any bugs you find on Launchpad.
What does the controller has to do with 'extensive track selection'?
Have you heard anything from Ritchie Hawtin? He plays 4 decks with controllers and I think I can say he is fucking good.
A controller just makes it easier to use loops and be creative with someone else's tracks by playing multiple songs together and not just transition them.
Also at end of the day the most important thing is whether the crowd like you or not. They don't care about what tools you use to play, they just want to dance.
By the way I only DJ for about 6 months, I use controllers and I welcome your honest opinion on my track selection: https://www.mixcloud.com/gregmolnar/bash-vol-6/
You can play whatever but most dance music is released as singles and EPs with one track and occasionally two tracks pressed to each side. Even albums will at most have two tracks pressed on a side but come with multiple discs. For example https://www.discogs.com/Digital-Mystikz-Return-II-Space/release/2338038
Just... Don't play music in keys that don't mix?
If you're not trained, use something like KeyFinder (it's free) http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
or open an online piano and whack some chords until you find what key the track is in.
Absolutely it is. It's not often used in clubs but it is more popular with mobile DJs. Either way though it will get you all the basics down.
That being said, for free DJ software I prefer Mixvibes Cross, check it out!
Hey, if you're REALLY a cheapskate then you can use a 'splitter' with Virtual DJ... only costs about $10-$30, and you can dip your toes in DJ-ing without spending a heap of money.

It's a little bit more expensive but you may be able to find one on sale somewhere near you, I just got mine for just under 250 Euros.
Super happy with the controller and it's also compatible with Djay Pro.
I really like Cross DJ, i've been using it to teach myself -- can search/import tracks directly from soundcloud which is really nice

Hey guys. I got a progressive house/a little prog trance for y'all, so it starts at 128 for the first half and eventually gets up to 138. I performed the mix with a DDJ-SR and recorded the mix in Serato. I am looking for input on track selection and transitions. I know I messed up at least two transitions (right before "Rocky" and before "Sun is Shining"). It was one of my first times not looking at the waveforms while mixing, so some of my transitions very muddy, but I think I fixed those on the fly to make them sound semi-decent...any ways here is the link and tracklist so y'all can see if it is something you're interested in listening to! Thanks!

You should check out /r/mixes and the weekly mix feedback thread posted in this sub.
Here is one I did this month on my newly acquired DDJ-SX2 and Technics 1210's (open format)
That's a tough choice, I think they are equivalent and either one would be good. The Pioneer has a better reputation and comes with better software (Serato DJ), while the Hercules has better hardware (24-bit soundcard, XLR Output, Booth Output, High Resolution Jog Wheels, all Metal casing, gold contacts).
Personally I'd go with the Hercules RMX II, but if for example the DJ was interested in Serato then the Pioneer is a clearly better choice.
I do play out in small clubs though and much prefer the XLR balanced output. I use http://www.mixvibes.com/ software anyway so I don't care about Serato.
No, it's not. If you structure your set to build up from BPMs, then it'll work. Furthermore, you can have a song dropped or raised to the BPM of the last song, then bring it up as soon as the last song is over.

This is a mix I put together for a chance to DJ at a teen club. The club manager gave me a list of songs and told me to make a mix with them. They're all Top 40, and I don't use echo out at all.

None of the keys are missing. As Rhyneav said, it's because you can say C# or Db. Check it out here.
There are plenty of softwares to find out your keys. My favorite is KeyFinder. It's free, really easy to use, and really quick.
One last thing, don't rely too much on keys. It does help, but don't get stuck because you want to transition from a 1A into a 8b. Sometimes, it just works even though the keys say it shouldn't.
A more recent option that needs a lot more love is Keyfinder by Ibrahim Sha'ath. http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
Dude did it for his MS thesis, and his report is available as well which outlines the technical bits. It replaced Rapid Evolution 3 for me as soon as I tried it - it's a simple and efficient tool, one efficient hammer for one kind of nail. Good stuff.

My first attempt at a serious mix since I got a DDJ-SB2 at the start of the month. I know theres some problems with EQing and beatmatching in a few spots but I'm focusing on creating a consistent atmosphere and energy throughout my mix at this point. All things considered I would like any input or critique on my mixing style/ song selection or any tips to improve.

This is a mix from a house party I played—I'd love some feedback on 2 things:
a) the way my transitions are shaping up. I've always been in love with harmonic mixing, but I'm trying to pull off more elaborate transitions that overlap pretty long; do they work? I'm not sure if I'm relying on delay/reverb effects too much.
EDIT: for instance, I'm pretty iffy on the transition to Reivindicacion at 10:50.
EDIT 2: Also, feedback on the EQ'ing during transitions. I feel like when I pull the low frequencies out of a track during a transition, too much of the low end is dropping out... Am I crazy? Example: the transition after Reivindicacion, at 14:35.
b) whether or not the eclectic mix of styles in this mix works. I like too many kinds of music to restrict the breadth of styles in my mixes, it seems...
Thanks in advance!
This is one of my favorite mixes ever: https://www.mixcloud.com/jrocc/j-rocc-blue-notes-droppin-science-mix/
It's jrocc mixing a bunch of original Blue Note tunes that have been sampled by hip hop over the years.
Now jrocc is a bit of a technical beast, but you might some ideas.
That said, there's plenty of jazz-influence electronic tunes you can get that are very mix and dj friendly.
Here's one I made a few years back:

My second mix, so any advice is golden.
Well... it depends on what sort of gear you have. SSL is pretty much a pure DVS, so if you don't have vinyl turntables or CDJs to work with it, it's useless. Traktor has a software mixer so you can map a lot more things to it and dj in the "tradtional" sense with just a controller.
If you're just looking into dj'ing, you can check out Mixxx, which is free.
tl;dr - Tell us your gear and we can help you better.
Mixxx is another option for software if you care about free open source software. It's not bad although it is definitely feature light compared to the paid programs; it does come with vinyl control and can be used with many MIDI controllers though, and it's community is fairly active.
It is possible. It's going to be really difficult to beatmatch (because even with the % turned down to the lowest the accuracy is very bad), but that's a good thing. It will force you to learn to nudge and/or ride the pitch slider.
I did the same thing on a mixtrack pro, and the one thing that helped me a lot was modifying the VDJ skins to NOT include the waveform or the BPM. This meant there was no way to cheat. I also remapped the sync button to a different function, which is an absolute must. If you keep sync mapped then the temptation to cheat will be very high, and cheating won't allow you to make any progress. It's better to fuck up and learn in your bedroom, rather than in front of a lot of people. Anyways, here are the skins (I don't remember which one of them actually worked):
You just have to put them in the ./Documents/Virtual DJ/Skins folder and unzip them.
Anyways, like I was saying, don't be scared to screw up. You need to screw up to get better. Have fun, and good luck!
There are a number of battery "generators", such as those made by Jackery, Goal Zero, and many others that will help.
HOWEVER, I'd highly recommend just getting a regular inverter generator. Inverter generators are very quiet (I can have a normal conversation right next to mine and it's a larger one), are safer for electronics, and just sip fuel compared to regular generators. You'd also have power to spare. You do end up paying about 2x the price/watt compared to a regular generator, but it is well worth it.
The first step is to find out what your power needs are. Get yourself a wattage meter to see how many watts you really need. Hook up all of your equipment to it, set the volume to what you'd expect, and then see where you are at. You'll need to do this check no matter if you go with the battery or gas powered route.
If you are going the battery route, check how many watt hours the battery is. If it is 2,000 watt hours, then you can run 200 watts worth of equipment for around 10 hours (hypothetically).
Set up cue points on intros and outros. After the drop or chorus jump to the outro hot cue and start mixing with the next song's intro. I do a lot of quick mixes in this way but there are a ton of way doing that. I don't want to self promote but if you are interested here is a link to one of my mixes you can copy some technics from that I think. Quick mixing takes practice and sometimes you have to prep your tracks. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x61ta1u?retry
If you have a song that's at 128ish bpm and a remix of the same track that's trap at 140-150ish bpm you can mix them together. Since it's the same track originally it has the same chords/melody/vocals and that will help a lot. I'll make an example in Ableton (don't have access to any of my gear since I'm away from home over christmas) and upload it as soon as I'm done with it.
<strong>Here's the example.</strong> The first song (let's call it Dada) is Dada Lifes remix of Satisfaction (130 bpm) and it transitions into RL Grimes remix of the same track (let's call it Grime) (145 bpm).
The transition starts at about 0:11 where I start to filter out the lows of Dada. I don't go high enough to take out the vocals.
At 0:15 I slam Grime in there. It is pitched down to 130 bpm to match Dada and has a low pass filter on it. The lows are also cut using the equalizer. The pitch is locked so as to not change its key.
From 0:15 to 0:23 I bring up the filter on Grime.
At 0:23 I cut Dada out completely and turn the lows up on the equalizer on Grime.
From 0:23 to 0:35 I slowly pitch Grime up to 145. Make sure to finish the tempo increase just as the snare roll ends. This will make sure that the time from when the snare roll ends to when the big clap comes is in the right bpm which helps people to lock into the tempo of Grime and dance right away.
It's a little tricky, but it's definitely doable (I've done it several times on CDJs without any major mishaps)
[Dancehall/Moombahton/Top 40 Remixes] Moose Tracks Episode 6 - Moombah Zoned

[Electro House / Bounce / Progressive House] Monday Morning Wood 010 (Throwbacks) (60min)
https://www.mixcloud.com/armin369/monday-morning-wood-010-throwbacks/
Been mixing in my bedroom for the past 8 months and started making weekly podcasts a couple of months ago. Thanks for any feedback!
Listen to a lot of different DJ sets, build your collection of music, and spend a lot of time mixing. I find that as you do that, your mind just sorta rewires itself to drop the next song it feels is appropriate at the right time. In that way your sets start gluing themselves together and having continuity by themselves.
Since you're into trap/dubstep you might enjoy the Datsik UMF Firepower mix he put on his soundcloud a few weeks ago. I'd say it's a pretty good example that you can go on a journey even with harsh music.
I also thought this Zomboy mix was sick when first learning how to mix dubstep.
[Future Bass & Trap] - (23 min)
https://www.mixcloud.com/Die_Young/die-young-canada/
Hey! Put this mix together for a mixcloud contest, overall I'm pretty happy with the mix, let me know what you think! Tracklist is available on mixcloud.
I will make sure to return any feedback that is given :)
Here's a demo that I made (https://www.mixcloud.com/NoM_Music/prime-collective-djs-pit-pub-mix-nom-nom/). Honestly at the time the demo was asked for from me I was very busy with school and work. I laid out the playlist, practiced the transitions very loosely and then I just hit record and went with it. I find if I overpractice mixes they feel super bland during the recording session.
In general I like to fit in a strong intro and strong finale. I treat it like telling a story. I typically put 2 'peaks' in a 30 minute mix and maybe 3-4 peaks in an hour long mix. The first peak in the mix will be weaker energetically than the last peak because I want to leave room to blow out the energy in the last peak.
Treat it like foreplay. When you think overall you want to make a strong overall impression and also leave the audience feeling like they have got the full package but also wanting to hear more from you.

The tracklist is timestamped on the mix. I'd appreciate seome comments on it. Especially the transitions and how long I should let the songs play out.
1 hour of disco and house, https://www.mixcloud.com/jamielong/for-ben/
the first half was planned and was just going with feelings for the 2nd half. Some of the transitions are a bit rough (between 4-5, 12-13 specifically) cos the tunes like to go up a beat during their breakdowns so was just trying to ride it by ear, all tips & feedback appreciated. hope you like the tunes
[Hip-Hop/R&B] KYJSA - Throwback Sessions Mix 1 (20 min.)
https://www.mixcloud.com/kyjsa/kyjsa-throwback-sessions-mix-1/
Hey /r/beatmatch! I've had my SB2 for just under 3 months now, and after playing a couple house parties, this is my first mix I'm putting out. I don't see a lot of Hip-Hop/R&B mixes in these threads, so hopefully y'all can appreciate the change of pace!
This is a quick mix of some of my favourites from the early to mid-2000s. Any criticisms or comments are appreciated.
Some things to think about/listen for as you go through:
I throw in a few different transitions throughout this mix. Some high-pass transitions, quick cuts, scratching (what's a Hip-Hop mix without some scratching?), echo-out, and some longer crossfade-type transitions.
Hip-Hop isn't very friendly with long intros and outros and is most of the time very unpredictable, so it's pretty rewarding finding songs that mix well into each other. One example of this is the transition between Bust It Baby and Buy U A Drank.
Regarding the echo-out transitions, I hear that some DJs consider it the safe "get out of jail free" transition. I kind of (but not entirely) agree with this, so I tried to find a way to make it a bit more cohesive in the mix.
The transition from Shortie Like Mine (A) into Soulja Girl (B) is an echo-out transition. I chose to echo out (A) at the lyric "Help me tell em...tell em..." into (B) "Soulja Boy tell em..." By matching the lyrics, the transition became a bit more than just a usual echo-out.
For anyone familiar with the songs, the recutting of a few of the songs was accomplished with the help of cue points. It was important to me to play the entire mix live in one go, with the only thing left to do in my DAW was adjust the overall volume of the mix.
Hopefully you get the chance to listen through, and that you enjoy it enough to let me know what you liked or what I could change.
[Bassline / UK Garage] - 30 minute Mix

This is the first mix I've put together for a specific organisation. Other than the first transition being a bit crap, I'd love some more feedback! Thanks!
[Hip Hop/Electronica] - Mind Run (48mins)
https://www.mixcloud.com/fredwordie/mind-run/
Recently got into Hip Hop, so I though I should try making a mix focusing on the stuff i have been listening to recently. Tried making it in the same way i make my electronica mixes. Would love some feedback as this style is very new to me.

[Future, Top 40, Top 40 Remixes, Hip Hop] Halloween Mix (31 Min)
Been spinning for about 6 years now on a personal level but recently started putting myself out there a little more. This mix is poppy AF (for most people on this sub) but brings in a lot of influences from Missy Elliott to Figure. Would love feedback on the transition @18:30.

Looking for feedback on: -general flow -transitions -what you think of this genre
"Choons with Beats" [Tech-House/House/Techno/Breaks] - All Vinyl.
This mix is is a bit more broad in the flavours it covers than I'd usually go for, so I wouldn't mind hearing any thoughts on the overall flow.
[Open Format / Top 40 / EDM] DJ Dadi - October Open Format Mix (creative title, eh?)
https://www.mixcloud.com/djdadi/october-open-format-mix/
Used to DJ for several years in college, but have recently been out of it for 3 years. Just bought an SX2 paired with some Technics (recommended by /u/dj_soo) and have been going through music trying to catch up ever since. I'm way behind on my music, mixing, etc, so any criticism would be appreciated. My audience for this mix is my local area (Midwest), hence the top 40 throwback and less-than-average EDM you'd probably find elsewhere in the country.
[Melodic House] Summer Carpool Mix
Took a while to make this, but happy with how it turned out. I'd really appreciate some feedback - happy to return the favor if you'd like me to listen to your mix.
62 mins of [Techno/House/Tech-House]. All Vinyl.

[Future Bass] 1 Year Anniversary Mix (1 hour)
https://www.mixcloud.com/Die_Young/1-year-anniversary-mix/
Hey there. I put this mix together as a way to showcase where I'm at after a year of mixing. I'm happy how it turned out but know there still some work to be done. I would love some feedback on the overall flow of the mix, the transitions, and the song selection. Any other critiques are also welcome. Track list is in my mixcloud.
I will make sure to give feedback to anyone who gives me feedback. Thanks for listening!

[Dubstep/Trap] Fck A Genre Mix 3 (~ 1hr 20 min)
https://www.mixcloud.com/STUX/fck-a-genre-mix-3/
This is my third mix I've uploaded to my mixcloud. I've only been mixing for about 7 months. I'm feeling pretty confident in my abilities so far but would really love some feedback from people I don't know on Facebook haha. I didn't save the tracklist because I'm lazy af, but I'd be happy to write it up for anyone who is curious. (Also fully aware that a couple trasitions are pretty rough, but I had no planned set)
EDIT: Huge thanks to anyone that listened - I'm charting 27th on mix cloud in Trap and Dubstep right now which is awesome!
[Future Bass & Trap] First Gig Mix (45 Mins)
https://www.mixcloud.com/Die_Young/first-gig-mix-future-bass-trap/
Hey there! This is a mix I put together for my first ever gig which I played a few weeks ago. I recreated it and recorded it. The first gig was a nerve racking but also exciting experience, people really seemed to enjoy my mix the night of. I would love some feedback on the flow of the overall mix, track selection and thoughts on some of the transitions. Tracklist is available on the mixcloud page and I will try and give feedback to anyone who gives me feedback. Thanks for listening!
Edit: Switch from soundcloud to mixcloud because soundcloud took the mix down :(
[Deep House / Bass House ] Revlow - Outlook 2015 entry
Hello Beatmatch!
This is my mix I spontaneously decided to enter for the outlook competition. I don't expect to get much from it and i can hear it riddled with errors but i'm looking for feedback on the song choice and progression and what transitions you like the most :) i've been mixing for 4-5 months on controllers and have recently transitioned to Serato!
*note: my transition out of Tchami - Pushing on was horrible, I was trying to layer the vocals over the new song. Sounded awful too me after!

If you don't want to wait for MrPopinjay's guide, I'd highly recommend this book from the side bar. It has very nice visual descriptions of how beat & phrase matching actually work. I highly recommend the book. I believe there is a kindle version on Amazon if that's your style. It's cheap and a valuable resource, but I'm pretty sure you could find it through, uh other channels, if you so choose.
That is correct. I would also highly, highly recommend you pick up a copy of this book which is linked in the sidebar as well.
The quickest way to get a solid handle on it is to just listen to your tracks a bunch. Seriously, all the time. Ideally it's music that you're really into so it shouldn't be hard. Pay attention to the structure and phrasing, when things change. This will help you when you mix two tracks together.
I think Mixvibes Cross Free is better than Virtual DJ. I got VDJ with my controller and used it for several years before switching to traktor and later to Mixvibes Cross.
http://www.mixvibes.com/products/cross
It also has the added benefit of being much cheaper if you do end up buying the full version. It is only
Did you try to use it with SSL or SDJ? As far as I know you need any kind of SSL box or SDJ certified controller to activate the software. After that you can use pretty much any MIDI controller for additional control. But without a box or certified controller/mixer you won't be able to even start serato. At least not on a legal way. But you said you have had the software for ages: how do you usually run it?
Once you got there: http://serato.com/scratchlive/support/1929/midi-in-scratch-live-101 http://serato.com/dj/support/15413/midi-101-a-how-to-guide-for-serato-dj-users/numark
dBpoweramp is the best program I've found for converting audio files. It supports multiple codecs. It does multi-core/thread encoding, so on my PC, for example, it will encode up to 8 tracks at once. It preserves the tag data across encodes. It allows you to specify per-codec settings (bit rate etc.) and add extra options such as deleting the source files after a successful encode. It'll remember your settings across sessions. It's also very easy to use and includes batch encoding.
If you want something free, try Switch: -
I've heard good things about it, although I've not tried it.
If your source files are WAV, you might want to consider using a lossless codec such as FLAC or Apple Lossless instead. That way you can shrink the files down by up to 50%, get full tagging support, but without losing any audio quality whatsoever. FLAC is supported natively in Windows 10, on Android phones, and with DVS software such as Serato and Traktor, so I use that, but obviously which codec to use will depend on the DJ hardware/software you're using.
If you don't mind paying for them, you can always find some at Beatport (or any online music store, really).
http://www.beatport.com/search?query=acapella&facets[0]=fieldType%3Atrack
edit: haha just noticed you said you'd like to avoid buying them. Oh well, I'll leave the link there. You may find something you like and then get it some other way.
Karafun. You can use them while being online or sync a number of songs for offline depending on your subscription with them
There are 3 tiers of subscription with them.
Party Pass - £4.99, Lasts for 2 Days, Unlimited Karaoke Tracks while online, or sync 1000 for offline.
Monthly, Same as above, but for £6.99 a month
Pro Subscription. Sync the entire library (20,000) (Cost not listed)
I've used it before for some staff parties where I used to work. It works, software is basic, but works well. Karaoke tracks are all very good. I used it with a internet connection,
Like I say, I only used it for a staff party, Karaoke is not my business, but it seemed good. I did not pay for it or anything, the party organiser set it up, so I cant comment on how much the pro subscription cost.
So what I was saying is let's pretend my tagged track is in Bbm(B flat minor), I'll start at the 9 o'clock position and work my way around the circle to my tagged track in the 3 o'clock position.
These programs are for two completely different purposes. Afaik there isn't a program which sets automatic cue points.
>Pitch 'n Time DJ - Expansion Pack for Serato DJ users - allows you to speed up or slow down your track to extreme tempo values while maintaining its key perfectly, with the highest quality and definition of any available software.
>The idea behind Mixed In Key is that it analyzes the harmonies and melodies of your music. It shows you the musical key of every track, and helps you choose tracks that are harmonically compatible with each other.
60 bucks to both analyze and write ID3 tags. Guarantee if you have even a small collection of tracks it will be worth the money in time savings over manually converting the musical key to the camelot key and then manually tagging each file.
https://github.com/deezer/spleeter is free , it's not the most straightforward thing to get running (the Docker version may be easiest option on Windows?) but if you search around you'll find various sites where you can just upload a file to test it out.
VirtualDJ has live stems separation.
Thanks for the mention! Audio Hijack (we dropped the “Pro” many years ago) can indeed record any audio playing on your Mac.

yep, & free for beginners use, you want child to learn piano, child wants to dj, child will want to buy music to dj, there's incentive to do piano.
Here is some free software.
Now, while it's probably true that most of your local DJs aren't delivering technically flawless sets, remember: what matters is if the crowd (as a whole) is having a good time.
If you are looking to start out, and are unsure what to do, what equipment to get and how to use it, then my personal opinion is to start out with a software option. As long as you have a computer that isn't super slow, then you can simulate the equipment and how it works, and figure out if it's something that you want to pursue. You can just use Traktor, but it does cost, and in my opinion it's not really great for learning as it has a lot of features that will just confuse you in the beginning. Try Virtual DJ or Mixxx. Both options are free and will allow you to figure out the basics without spending a cent. Then once you have an idea of the basics and whether it's something you still want to pursue, you can look into the market for controllers or CDJ's.
Just curious, have you bought any hardware or software yet?
VirtualDJ 7 Home edition is now 100% free. It matches key, lets you display in key or its Camelot equivelent, and there's a smart folder that shows only 'compatible' songs (-1 to +1 numbers from the track you're playing, in either the major (B) or minor (A) key, whichever your current track is (most music is minor key, I've learned)). And songs close to the BPM too are marked with an asterisk near the BPM, but there's a syncing feature that keeps things accurate to 1 beat every 100 minutes. You can set it to scan your entire music and video collection, and it scans CD tracks too.
It's also not bad software for making mixes. Download it for PC or Mac here, or get it free on Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7's App Store.
[Tech-House / House] https://www.mixcloud.com/dj-esot3ric/esot3rics-tech-house-and-house-mix-009-april-21st/
Starting to work on making my mixes tighter and more technically solid, so I'm not 100% sure of this one. I like the song selection, apart from a couple of songs that just don't sound quite 'right' at the start of the mix... I'd love any and all feedback! Rate mine and I'll rate back.
[Tech House/Techno] (55 min)
been mixing for 5 months now and i am looking for a gig in my town. this set was recorded without much planning to test myself. Is this good enough for a nightclub? (transitions, track selection,EQing)
[Big Room][EDM] My first ever set which I made with the Denon MC3000 and VirtualDJ for a house party. 55 tracks for a 1:38:07 long mix. I'm fairly happy with it considering this was my first go at it, however, I know I've got a lot of improving to do. Any feedback on whether the 2 trap remixes (Beautiful world and No heroes) I incorporated fit with the energy of the set. I thought the transition from takedown into arsonist was off, but I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. I wasn't sure if the Laidback Luke tracks I used near the end of the mix fit in with the overall feel of the set as I felt they were a bit on the slow side. Any additional feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks! Tracklist is on mixcloud: https://www.mixcloud.com/hastin-lam/denon-mc3000-edm-mix/
[TECHNO] https://www.mixcloud.com/mikeplate/mike-plates-after-work-special/
This is my first 3h set. Been DJing for about 4 months now. This time i carefully watched my phrasing. Some transitions are kind of harsh and sudden in my opinion (mostly because the incoming track went full on when the outgoing track took out some energy)
Let me know anything i can improve on :) Thanks
[House / Melbourne] - 43 Min
https://www.mixcloud.com/krogers128/my-first-mix-sucked/
This is my first mix, I don't have alot of time when it comes to playing with my controller. I'm a full time A&P Mechanic in a long distance relationship so I do what I can lol. I'm happy with the results, my friends seem to enjoy it. I just did this one on the fly and plan on doing trance/trouse next, that's what I prefer, but I like all kinds. I would love some criticism on it, and i know there are a couple bumps, but hey it's my first one! I just started on a Pioneer DDJ-SB in the beginning of January and I've probably got around to using it about only a couple times a month :( tracklist and time stamps are in the mix on mixcloud

[Tech House / Techno] straight from the club: https://www.mixcloud.com/mikeb93/philleicht-b2b-mike-plate-3tonbar-07022015/ sort of my first real gig DJing for about 3 Months now. I Like this set for the most part. Let me know what you think
You can record a perfectly decent one using the built-in microphone on your computer.
I did one recently for a college silent dance party event where the DJs recorded short mixes for everyone to download. The participants meet up and dance at three different locations on campus. There's ten minutes of dancing music on each mix, plus about ten more of walking music that plays while we're going from one location to the next. The drop goes in between, and tells everyone where the next location is. Here's mine - go to 11:45 on the mix.
To make it, I went into Quicktime, hit Record, and turned on my "radio announcer" voice. I used the built-in microphone on my computer, but an actual mic would be even better if you have it. Once I had the clip, I loaded it into the DJ program as a sample, and played it during the lull in between the two songs.

Hi guys! Been djing for ~1 year and this was a fun 3 hour session with traktor kontrol s4 mk2 and two vinyl turntables. Some transitions are sketchy and the gain on some songs is terribly wrong but it was a real fun session and there's a full tracklist (!) for all 3 hours. My friend (who's not a redditor) also joined in at about ~2h40min. Enjoy listening and leave some criticism, please.
No harm in trying Mixx, it's open-source and cross platform and FREE. Not sure if your controller is supported but you could always map it with the included controller mapping tool.
Something I mentioned in a thread on /r/DJs
>Disable all unneccessary programs from running when you boot your laptop. This includes disabling your wireless internet connection and any background processes like anti-virus software that eat up resources. Disabling Aero themes in Win 7 on the desktop and switching back to "Windows XP" style desktop can also help (but I've never had to go this far)
>Make sure you're connecting your controller via a USB 2.0 port. Disconnect all unnecessary USB peripherals like keyboards and mice.
>Make sure you're using the latest ASIO drivers and run all audio (inputs and outputs) through the controller (if it has a soundcard)
>Adjust latency until sound glitches, pops, crackles, etc disappear
>???
>Profit!
Edit: if you're a hobbyist and are trying to make use of an old laptop that's gathering dust it might be worth your while trying out a user friendly *nix OS and/or installing Mixxx - not only is it free, but I managed to get version 1.6.0 and 1.7.0 running on a netbook!
Wrong subreddit - /r/edmproduction
Anyway, you need digital audio workstation (DAW) software to make music with the Launchpad. Try Ableton Live or FL Studio.
Gave it a listen since I love slowhouse.
Here are my opinions on the mix:
1) the transitions are too short. I know it's a mini-mix and you're trying to fit in a bunch of songs, but to comment a bit on the genre... These tracks are super DJ friendly and really lend themselves for very nice long blends (sometimes can be over a minute long if you find a good match!). Your transitions were 2 phrases or less in most plases, try aiming for longer blends... the transitions will seem less abrupt this way
2) I could hear a couple of key clashes (can't remember which tracks). This could be helped by running your tracks through Mixed In Key first (this might open up a torrent of MiK haters, but hey, I stand by that software because it works for me).
Really love the slow disco stuff though, I really enjoyed the track selection, especially that edit of Sister Sledge's "He's the Greatest Dancer"... hadn't heard that particular edit before. Is that "Yet Another Mainstream Sample"?
As a shameless plug (and maybe to have something else to look at), here's a slow disco set I did a few months back that has some pretty long blended transitions in it. https://soundcloud.com/rip_king/sweet-syrup-vol-iii
Overall though I'd say it's pretty good for only learning after a couple months, keep it up!
I would buy a Behringer mixer, they make clones of pioneer stuff at 1/4 of the cost https://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-DJX750-Channel-Pro-Mixer/dp/B001RUEDI2/ref=asc_df_B001RUEDI2/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310868499587&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15899401108966031875&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&...
Speaker watts is not what it will pull from the outlet. As an example, my 2 1,000 watt JBL's barely pull 500 watts with both going fairly loud.
Your best bet is to get all of the sound equipment first. Then get a wattage meter (kill a watt or similar), plug everything in, and play everything around your normal volume. Here's the one I use.
As far as a generator goes, I highly recommend a good inverter generator. First off, they are very quiet. I usually set mine about 50' away and people don't even realize I'm running off generator power. Secondly, they are much better for electronics than regular generators. You'll pay about twice the price, but it is very much worth it. Honda is the standard. Generac is what I use and it's been very good as well.
I'm 5'9" (181cm) and use thisas my main DJ table: https://www.amazon.com/Lifetime-80160-Commercial-Adjustable-Folding/dp/B003DYZQKY with a black drape over it. At its highest setting, it's perfect for DJing.
