> Apple does not have a good record of resisting such pressure in China, for example, having moved Chinese citizens’ data to Chinese government servers. Even some democracies criminalize broad categories of hate speech and blasphemy. Would Apple be able to resist the demands of legitimately elected governments to use this technology to help enforce those laws?
This right here and PRISM is why I've always kept one eye open with Apple. I think there comes a certain point when they will or have to give in somehow. Possibly be given a gag order to not tell the public about something either.
Over the past couple years I've been leaning more towards open source software and now I am even more. I got onto FF a few years ago and don't have any reason to switch. I looked into and started using cryptee. I'm willing to give up convenience for privacy and personal security. I'm rethinking what software and apps I use and working on replacing them.
For a second I started to actually think that Apple really was for the user. What goes on in China and the latest developments show that they really are not.
The easiest alternative would be to use something like Cryptee or a Nextcloud provider which are almost a direct alternative to a lot of Google services. They have limited free tiers and paid options for a couple dollars a month.
You can also host your own Nextcloud server but that requires a greater upfront cost if you don't already have a server and learning to how to set one up. Instructions
>One last question! When can I see the warranty canary in the future? :)
Already have one right here as a part of the Transparency Report. If we get woken up at 03:00 with a phone call or email regarding any legal situation, we'll post it there as long as the law permits. 😎
Yup already done. Went from the 50GB plan to free, took everything out and disabled iCloud photos and iCloud drive. I am switching to Cryptee and saw it recommended from a comment here a few days ago as well in /r/privacy and /r/privacytoolsIO and so far liking cryptee and got the 400GB plan. I'm also curious now to see how cryptee develops. The small team behind it which I believe is two devs at the moment are active and the main dev is active on reddit.
I've become very skeptical of Apple now though always kept one eye open because of PRISM etc. But now it's all getting worse. Now I'm set on encrypting everything.
I think it's the best solution for encrypted photo backup.
- it's easy to use
- for me most important: open source
Though there are a few convenience trade-offs, what the developer (u/johnozbay) is very honest about.
https://crypt.ee/help?article=convenience-trade-offs-you-need-to-make-while-using-cryptee-photos
Give it a try, the Starter Plan is free(100mb)
It's all about sharing I think.
If you do NOT need to share photo albums with small groups of people, then just backup offsite via sync (Syncthing or Reslio Sync) or get Crashplan or Backblaze. I currently have 8TB of files with Backblaze, most are photos with maybe 1/4 being video.
If you need to share albums, then it gets tricky. Onedrive will do an OK job but you're in the Microsoft world which is dubious (perhaps better the Google, but how much?).
I'm liking https://Piwigo.com which is open source and allows unlimited personal images at reasonable cost (but jpg, not TIFF, and no RAW... though it makes little sense to share raw files). Or you can host your own Piwigo photo site for free.
I looked at Ente.io a year ago and it couldn't cut it at the time as far as sharing album goes, but I'll revisit again, same with Cryptee .
For something a lot cheaper than standard notes ($3 for 10gb vs SN's hefty $10/month fee) that has image and markdown support right out the gate, try out crypt.ee. It doesn't have subfolders quite yet, but I've been in talks with u/johnozbay (the dev) about it lately.
Shameless plug here, I'm the maker of Cryptee!
It's AES256 client side encrypted, realtime syncs with all your devices, and it's a progressive web app that runs natively on all your devices when you pin it. You can use markdown + all types of styling, attach PDFs, photos and files to your journals or tag them inline, and it's free up to 100MB. So if your main use case is text-only you should be able to use it for free for a very very long time
Happy to answer any questions you may have if you'd like to know anything ✌🏻
Give it a try and let me know if you run into any issues or would like any specific features added that could make journaling easier and better!
It is one of the reasons. They explain it in detail here - https://crypt.ee/help?article=why-is-cryptee-not-in-the-ios-app-store-or-android-play-store
Their threat model is here - https://crypt.ee/threat-model
Depending on how much storage you need and accessibility, check out creating your own next cloud instance (sort've complicated) or https://crypt.ee by fellow redditor johnozbay.
Cryptee is an encrypted cloud storage for photos and documents with a fantastic privacy policy and quite privacy centric. This option is easy to use and fairly straight forward, although you may not have the quick access to your photos like you did with google photos. I know johnozbay is always developing / coding for cryptee so I'm sure he's got quite the roadmap planned.
Nextcloud / Owncloud you can self host on a server, VM, raspberry pi, a VPS or purchase a nextcloud instance from an online provider. You can easily integrate files editing with collabora and photos has a built-in application. (Nextcloud requires more work/setup). You can also set up nextcloud to auto upload your phone contacts, calendar events, and photos from your phone to your nextcloud instance.
Been using crypt.ee for more than a year now and I'm a fan. Developer u/johnozbay is very active on reddit, and adds new features regularly. It's open-source, encrypted, and customer support has always been friendly, personal and fantastic.
Check out Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) It's more for documents and photos but can also serve as an Evernote/Keep replacement. Free plan offers 100mb so you can try it out and paid plans are very reasonable. Web clipper is in the works per developer (u/johnozbay)
I know you said you want "only a password" and not a private key but good encryption will employ the use of both. I highly recommended you check out Cryptee (https://crypt.ee). It is a client side encrypted service that offers a free 100mb plan so you can try it out. Paid plans range from 10gb to 2tb! It's very reasonable and the dev is a great guy that is extremely passionate about privacy.
Actually, there is a really good option- Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) is client side open source, zero-knowledge encryption, and outside the 14 eyes. Storage prices are a little high ($3/10gb) but per the developer, things may change soon...give it a look
For a few months now I've been searching for a secure alternative to Evernote, and the best advice I can give you is to just give them a try. I can't really speak about privacy and security, but in terms of features and usability all of them have their strengths and weaknesses. It really depends what you want to do.
At the moment, I'm paying for Evernote, Cryptee and Standard Notes. Hopefully one of the latter will continue to grow and mature, but at this moment, none of them is "perfect". Maybe you'll find a service/app that suits your needs, though.
Absolutely. He's doing it right. Too many of these rely on venture capital who always find a way to screw things up for idealists. I'm proud of John and highly recommend Cryptee. Just try the free account and you will definitely want the paid 10gb version at $30. https://crypt.ee/#features -
Thanks, I subscribed to that sub. crypt.ee looks promising, though I'm seeing with 50GB+ it can get pricey, even on the yearly plan. Do you know anything about that "Smart Search" feature it uses?
Just FYI all that emby server stuff went completely over my head haha, I have no idea what that is but I'll do some digging around and see what I can find.
Also, about Ghost Folders, that is correct. I've built Cryptee based on plausible deniability in mind. By which I mean you can hide a folder, and say if you've got an abusive partner forcing you to unlock your device, they would have no idea if you have a folder there or not. (or what's in it etc) And yeah technically this could be used in restrictive countries like China, however I think once you're dealing with a nation-state-level entity, Ghost folders may only work at basic checkpoints etc. If they decide to go full targeted surveillance on you, your milage may vary.
[shameless plug]
Give https://crypt.ee a try!
Been building this for a year and a half now.
It's finally out of beta this week. The 'official' launch is 10 days-ish away. (marketing etc.)
I'll post here something more detailed in a few days!
It uses openpgpjs, AES256 client side encrypted, runs on every device, client side open sourced.
Has a small free plan to try out, so feel free to give it a try and let me know what you think ~
You can use "REDDITPRIVACY" at the checkout and get 10% off if you wish to switch to paid plan.
I would love to hear the community's feedback on what can be improved as well, so I can start making the platform better.

[Edit: clarified the 10% off is for lifetime]
I can also recommend Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) Like someone else noted, it doesn’t offer background/auto upload (impossible for a PWA) but it is well worth uploading your photos manually to have them in a safe, beautiful place. Seriously, give it a try
>https://crypt.ee/help?article=how-can-i-search-documents-for-their-text-content
Much appreciated - I didn't look hard enough for the help it seems. Now I also got an answer if tags are supported. Awesome, thanks!
As other people said for Instagram replacement : Pixelfed.
For GooglePhotos you can have a look into Piwigo : https://piwigo.org which is well established and well known. Or Recall : https://app.recall.photos which is pretty new but seems very promising on paper (open source, end to end encrypted, etc..).
EDIT : forgot to mention Cryptee : https://crypt.ee. Very well known and trusted and very easy to use.
Just two thoughts. If you want more sophisticated formatting then I would recommend using the Markdown Basic editor as that is a 'custom editor' which means they make it themselves and not a third party, see - https://standardnotes.org/help/77
The other benefit of that is should you want to leave in future Markdown is a standard and so very portable whereas if you use some other editors they may be much harder to use in other apps.
Finally for extremely sensitive stuff something like crypt.ee/ might be something of interest to you. It has a greater security focus at the expense of convenience and so I would only recommend that for rarely accessed but highly sensitive documents. Obviously for most things Standard Notes is much more convenient and perfectly suitable.
Hi! I use Cryptee myself and had the same question about the google sign-in. I found the answer in the FAQ of cryptee.
If I sign up with my Google Account, can Google access my files?
Hope this helps!
I honestly think the best option for you is Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) it's fully encrypted, client side open source, free plan of up to 100mb, paid starts at $3/month, you can upload .txt files and convert them to encrypted docs, has a PWA (Progressive Web App) so nothing to install. It works great and the developer has big plans coming soon!
I recommend a service called Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) for encrypted photo (and doc) storage. The developer u/johnozbay is very active here on Reddit in case you have any questions that the website doesn't address. It's a great service!
May I humbly suggest Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) as a safe, encrypted alternative home for your photos. The developer u/johnozbay is very active here on Reddit and can answer any questions you may have :)
Absolutely :)
So, my recommendation is a service called Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) it is an excellent alternative/replacement for those seeking a more private home for documents and photos. The creator r/johnozbay is constantly active with development and here on Reddit. Thx
Shameless plug here, I'm the maker of Cryptee! [as seen here on reddit]
It's an AES256 client side encrypted Docs & Photos alternative. Realtime syncs with all your devices, and it's a progressive web app that runs natively on all your devices when you pin it. You can use markdown + all types of styling, attach PDFs, photos and files to your docs or tag them inline, and it's free up to 100MB. So if your main use case is text-only you should be able to use it for free for a very very long time.
Offline mode is nearly complete as well, and sharing/collaborative editing is on the roadmap.
Happy to answer any questions you may have if you'd like to know anything ✌🏻

Hello there!
Thanks a lot for checking it out!
Currently there is no handwriting / annotation support. BUT, Cryptee has a unique feature that I've built with feedback from friends who are in academic / research fields. It's like a PDF picture in picture. You can see it here. Essentially you can keep writing notes, while looking at the PDF in the same screen. You can minimize the PDF as well if you need more screen real estate.
Some of my friends in academia said their biggest pain is switching between a PDF and a note-editor. And their feedback was that they're only using handwritten annotations, because it's impractical to switch back and forth so often. And according to their workflow this picture-in-picture solves the problem.
Also, you can easily link "attach" PDFs to documents/notes inline, and quickly open those by clicking on them. You can see how they look like here. These little inline attachment bubbles basically allow you to quickly link to PDFs that are on Cryptee, click on them and open them up in the pic-in-pic viewer.
I admit that this is just one workflow, and I'm pretty sure this may not fit some. Handwritten annotations are on the list of features to add. It'll take a little bit, but it is possible, and I have a preliminary idea on how it can be done as well. I am actively expanding and improving Docs rapidly with feedback from the user-community.
So feel free to give it a try, and let me know if it fits your workflow, and if not, let me know what I can improve, and I'll happily make improvements and add features to make things work for you as well!
Thanks!

Perhaps you should take a look at Cryptee (https://crypt.ee). It’s actually designed with journalists and similar threat models in mind. Features client-side encryption, plausible deniability through “ghost folders” which can be hidden and summoned, fully featured document creation/editing including PDFs, and photos and videos as well! I think it is perfect for what you’re wanting to do

Hello Everyone!
We're so damn excited to announce that you can now upload videos and large files up to 500mb to Cryptee!
+ We made some insane performance improvements. Things are now so damn efficient that Cryptee even works on low-powered PocketBook e-readers!
Our support team and I will be working around the clock this weekend answering questions and catching up with previous messages!
So if you have any questions, please shoot them our way via our help center :

We would love to hear what you think!
Best,
John
I used to be with you, but Cryptee has the first explanation of why a PWA is a great fit for certain scenarios/threat models.

Hi there 👋🏻
Sadly, what you're looking for is mathematically impossible due to on-device encryption.
We have a dedicated article in our knowledge-base explaining why this is the case.
Take a look and reach out to our support team if you have any further questions.
Best,
J
Use protonmail instead of yahoo. Yahoo maybe even worst than Google. Proton services are the most trusted services for every privacy focused people.
If you want alternative to Google photos where you just want to store photos and videos then look into cryptee Otherwise if you just wanna cloud drive where you want to store both media and files and documents then protondrive. It's end to end encrypted and best safest and trustworthy cloud storage out there.
And no apple may have better security and protects you from outside trackers and ads but apple themselves collects lots of data like Google does. If you want security then sure switch to iPhone, its alright. If I don't wanna use Graphane os on pixel and had to choose between iPhone and android, I would go with iPhone. IPhone is at least better than android (tho you won't get many privacy focused alternative apps in ios cuz you can't side load apps like you can from fdroid in android)
Playstore best alternative is aurora store. Aurora store install apps from play store only but without giving your data to Google. Give it a try, you don't have to log in aurora store unless you wanna purchase some app. You can get aurora store from fdroid. And no, you don't have to download apks from aurora store or fdroid. It works like play store only

Alternatives Chrome - Brave / hardened Firefox/librewolf
Gmail - ProtonMail , recently had a huge update and looks way modern, cool looking than gmail. You don't have to comprise your convenience. (Same with browsers above, they are way better looking, clean and uses less ram than chrome)
Drive - Proton Drive
Google photos - cryptee (Google photos are the worst, and drive as well, it will literally scan all your pics and data and take your face prints , voiceprints, metadata , etc)
Maps - apple maps if you use apple, or osmAnd (osmand isn't that good looking, you need to compromise here, but osmAnd does the job so I'm okay with it)
If you built it as a Progressive Web App then iOS users could add the app as a Home Screen button from Safari similar to how cryptee does it without having to go through Apple’s App Store rigamarole :)
Would not recommend ente. see https://www.reddit.com/r/PrivacyGuides/comments/rjzc9s/comment/hp7gu68/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Instead use crypt.ee which is a tad bit more pricy and doesn't have native apps but it is a way more trustworthy and polished solution overall.

A seconda del livello di paranoia:
- Notally (fa quello che deve fare, ottima per la lista della spesa),
- Standard Notes (con protezione password e back-up automatico online),
- Cryptee (se hai il furgone dell'FBI parcheggiato di fronte a casa).
Pure gold. Love it.
Thanks a million for the time and effort you took to make this video happen. Deeply appreciate it.
Also love that you spotted the 404 page. We have a few more easter egg pages like this. Another one – a farewell page with a poem – is visible when you delete your account :-) Here's a link if you'd like to see it for fun, without having to delete your account.
We have multiple paragraphs and sections dedicated to this in our threat model page. We talk about what it covers, what it doesn't, where you can use it and how. Search for the word "ghost" to save time and you can read about it in detail. 👍🏻
While for you, your use case, and your threat model it may not be "ultimate" deniability, for all the use-cases we specify, as long as it fits your threat model, Cryptee offers a solution that ultimately helps you have deniability.
The whole point of Ghost Folders, is to have the ability to temporarily be able to hide stuff in the event that you know someone may look at your account under duress. Be it at a border checkpoint, be it by an abusive partner, or say for example you're at work, and don't want your colleagues to see all your folders when you open your account next to them etc.
From what it sounds like, your example / your threat model would benefit from having two separate accounts. One to show in the event of duress, and one to keep all your secrets. This way you don't deny you use Cryptee, you simply login to safe account under duress.
Hi there! Maker here 👋🏻
Since all your stuff on Cryptee is encrypted on your device, unlike other un-encrypted services, our servers cannot fetch the videos for you, so instead we need to access and fetch the videos in your browser. And consequently :
a) if your ad blocker is blocking youtube, videos won't load
b) if your ad blocker (or browser is) configured to block iframes / canvases, other features of your browser, the videos may not load.
c) we cannot do smart link-detection, as we cannot try loading videos, and check to see if it loads as expected etc on our servers. So if the link you paste isn't formatted correctly for embed, it may not load. Are you pasting the link of the video from your address bar? Because you'll need to paste the embed link (and not the address bar link).
--
If all these seem to be correct, and you're still unable to load videos, reach out to our customer support team via our helpdesk and file a bug report with details like your browser / blockers / vpns etc and we'll take a look and fix things up right away ✌🏻
--
Hoping this makes sense and helps,
Best,
J
Not currently so you have to upload your photos manually. This support article has more information related to this.
https://crypt.ee/help?article=convenience-trade-offs-you-need-to-make-while-using-cryptee-photos
You might want to look at Cryptee (https://crypt.ee). It cannot backup automatically as it’s a PWA and iOS limitations prevent it. However, it’s a fully encrypted and ridiculously beautiful UI for all your photos-All client side encrypted
Hey u/crunchslick, sorry for the late response, seeing this a bit too late, it's been a busy few weeks!
The rumors are true! It's happening! We've been making some great progress with videos, and while I cannot comment on when we'll be able to bring complete support for videos just yet, I can safely say that we're working on it, and it's coming soon. Stay tuned to our blog. We'll have confettis and fireworks there when it's ready 😅
At the moment, you can upload .MP4 and .MOV videos to Cryptee Docs, for as long as they're under approx 50 - 100mb. (depending on your device's processing power)
We're working on a) increasing the file-size limit by doing some cool encryption and media buffering tricks, and b) adding support for more video formats. As soon as we've nailed it down to a point where it's functional and reliable, we'll add it to Photos as well.
[some boring technical background]
The difficulty with Photos is that lots of users literally drag and drop their entire external hard drives into Cryptee Photos and upload hundreds of gigabytes of content in one go. 😅 So the memory management algorithms we have for Cryptee Photos' uploader is a bit more different than Cryptee Docs (~~where users presumably [and hopefully] don't upload entire hard drives hahahaha~~) in short our Photos uploader is built and optimized to handle complex and massive folder structures, whereas our Docs uploader is built and optimized to handle a large number of different filetypes. So we want to get things right in Docs first, at a smaller scale, then slowly roll it out to Photos. (hopefully this makes sense haha)
– p.s. thanks for the kind words as usual u/aliceturing!
All the best to you both from Northern Europe,
J
>to find an alternative here. Ideally I want to copy and paste from the clipboard and not simply upload the file
Not sure why you've been down voted. This was an excellent suggestion - thank you. I will be using crypt.ee a lot moving forward.
Yep this makes a lot of sense. I'm a fool for not looking deep into them enough and just trusted them because they're open source. I'll just wait until they can implement the download albums feature, download all of my photos, then migrate to crypt.ee. Thanks for pointing all of these out!
Usually, Microsoft Word. I've had some luck with Quoll Writer for organizing longer projects, and FocusWriter when I'm struggling to stay on track/have deadlines.
Recently, I've had to use a dinky little Chromebook and I've tried an assortment of web-based and Android apps on it. I've mostly settled on Dropbox Paper, which is like Google Docs but more multimedia-oriented, because it looks nicer on my low-res screen than Docs and it's very user-friendly, I've been really productive there. Downside is it won't let you work offline for more than a minute and I hate that. Runner-up is Crypt.ee which is very privacy-oriented and I feel better storing my dead doves there. It lets you work offline but doesn't allow sidebar comments which throws off my process a little.
I'm messing with Crypt.ee for photos and love the presentation on a PC/mac. The big gap for me is sharing albums. I would like to be able to share albums with friends/family in a relatively simple way.
Is this in the works? I use Sync.com for cloud storage and they allow you to share "links" to shared folders and these links can have no password, a unique passwords added ... and they can also have expiry dates. Would love to see something like that.
I saw a comment here the other day that mentioned a storage provider called cryptee. After looking into it cryptee doesn't sound bad at all. Over the recent years I've spent some time looking around for alternative data storage's and a secure one but haven't had much luck. Has anyone used cryptee somewhat recently and what are your thoughts? It's made by a small team and looks simple and straightforward.
I use Tresorit for file storage (and no, I am not the least bit concerned about acquisition by Swiss Post), but if all you’re doing is photos, check out https://crypt.ee I believe it’s $3.99/mo. and it is zero-knowledge with client-side encryption
If you want a third party (non self-hosted) service you could use: * Stingle * Cryptee
Those two are E2E encrypted and Open Source.
If you can self-host, do it. You can self host:
Nextcloud - Using Nextcloud Photos app is an OK solution, but expect MUCH less functionality than with GPhotos. Make sure to backup your data!
Photoprism - This is the most similar to Google Photos, has a lot of functions and works pretty good. Note that is on Beta state buy is OK to use it. Also, you will need storage and a good backup system.

You can use it as a PWA. I think a non-tech savvy person can't even spot a difference between a native app or a PWA. A PWA can be as user-friendly as a native app can be.
When it comes to privacy I rather use a website(PWA) instead of a native app which has to comply to the rules of the appstore.
Read this: https://crypt.ee/help?article=why-is-cryptee-not-in-the-ios-app-store-or-android-play-store
> Works very bad in IOS (at least my experience in the free tier) and can't use it reliably.
What works bad and what is not reliable for you? Maybe I can help.
I highly recommend Cryptee Photos (https://crypt.ee) It's a zero-knowledge, client side encrypted solution that also includes Cryptee Docs, a safe home for your docs and notes. Pricing is very fair considering the privacy that you're getting :)

Well, while I'm not currently using their service because it seems expensive for me, I know that Cryptee tries to offer a similar service. I only comment this in case you didn't know about this project.
I use an offline backup using Synching. But I want to buy a NAS and use Open Media Vault.
Some requisites that I would have if I wanted to use a service like the one you are offering would be a completely open source client and server. A nice (or acceptable) ui and multiplatform support.
Adding to your options... There's a program, Cryptee, that's like Google Drive but more secure. The most relevant feature to you is the "Ghost Folders" feature, which allows you to hide folders in your account from view. That way, even if parents discover the Cryptee account and force you to log into it to show them what's inside, you can fill the top-level folder with decoy stuff while the actual private stuff stays hidden. Main things to remember are that you have to manually hide the ghost folder every time you're done with it and you also have to remember your encryption key and the name of the ghost folder - if you lose it there's no way to recover it.
This is somewhat tedious and probably overkill for your needs, but in the unfortunate case that it wouldn't be overkill, I hope it helps you.
You're welcome! ✌🏻
For Cryptee Photos, needless to say you can only upload media files (jpg, png, gif etc) 📸
For Cryptee Docs, however, you can upload anything and everything.
– If the editor can open, it'll import and open the file in the document editor (like .txt, .md, .html, .enex etc) 📄
– If it's not a document-like file, but an image / video / audio / pdf / ebook etc. Cryptee will open it in its file-viewer if it can. We're adding more and more supported formats every few months. 📖
– If it's neither a document-like file, nor another type of file our built in viewer can show you, then Cryptee will show you a download box, and you can download the file to open it. 📦
–– Finally, you can attach all types of files to your Cryptee Documents to quickly open them in the viewer (i.e. PDF, and view them side-by-side with your documents etc)
And you can read all about the supported filetypes / formats etc in our helpdesk. ☕️
So you can upload lots of different files (and import/export/view/attach them in the context of 'Documents'. –> this one's quite important, because lots of folks tend to confuse this with a file-system / storage service like Google Drive. It's important to keep in mind Google Drive and Docs are two different things. Similarly, Cryptee Docs is for documents. Cryptee Photos is for photos. We don't have a 'drive' yet. So you can access it all, but next to your documents 😅
I hope this helps! ✌🏻
Hey there u/-myles!
Apologies for the delay, things are quite busy nowadays!
And no worries about pinging me!
Video upload is coming very soon to Cryptee Photos, (in fact our code is pretty much ready) but unfortunately currently it's stuck behind browsers and web-specs. This is a shortcoming of in-browser encryption/decryption and memory use of large files. So it's not so much about Cryptee itself, but about the very nature of videos / large files / encryption and streaming files in general.
Take a look at this helpdesk article about video uploads, where we talk in depth about all the reasons why it's not possible to add this feature yet – and let me know if there's anything else I can clear up :-)
Hoping all this makes sense and helps!
All the very best,
J
I'm not sure if it helps. You could take a look at Cryptee. It's more like a Evernote alternative which shares some similarities with Onenote. You can view the source code if you're interested. Good luck with your project!
/u/johnozbay, sorry for the ping! Been using crypt.ee for some time now and I love it - using it primarily as a Google Photos alternative. The snag I've hit is the lack of video support, is this something on the roadmap going forward?
I'm sure many are like me where only 1% of their camera roll are videos, but these are often the moments in our lives we treasure most, and most care to be in as secure a service as possible. Going any route for photos and not being able to drop in the odd video has unfortunately become a stopper for me.
I always recommend crypt.ee(because I love this tool). It’s open source and you can try it for free. I store all my photos there - as well as my documents, notes and important files. So crypt.ee replaces google photos and other note taking software(Evernote, Bear etc.) for me. The software gets constant updates with new features. u/johnozbay is a very active developer and is always there to help and answer your questions.
What kind of security or privacy are you looking for?

No cloud: Everything is stored on the local network, nothing in the cloud. Be sure to keep backups.
Client-encrypted or E2E-encrypted cloud: Your photos and videos are stored in a cloud, but they're encrypted by you, or in such a way that no one else, not even the service provider can access the data.
Server-encrypted cloud: Your photos and videos are encrypted in the cloud, but the service provider holds the encryption keys. While this isn't exactly private, it allows you to still access your data if you forget your password. Most cloud services fall under this category.

Taking a look at the comments it seems that your photos and videos are under 3 GB. In that case, I'd recommend storing them in your native photos app on your phone (be sure to turn off iCloud Photos or the cloud option for Google Photos), and then import them onto your computer as well.
If you still want your photos and videos off of your phone but easily accessible, you might want to consider crypt.ee. It's about 3 euros a month (I think) for 10 GB, but that storage is end-to-end encrypted (not even crypt.ee can access the photos). Be sure to remember and/or save your encryption password.
Hey if you want a safe place to write stuff, use https://crypt.ee
It's e2e encrypted, and the government can't get into it, much less decrypt the data if they somehow manage to get Estonia's courts to do something.
Cryptee (€9/mo: 400GB) or Jottacloud (€7.5/mo: unlimited*). Jottacloud also includes Office Online – I haven’t seen that available anywhere else besides OneDrive – and offers free-forever 5GB.
I personally use Koofr. It’s simple and amazingly fast. There’s also pCloud, Sync, Tresorit, Nextcloud... Lots of services out there.
^(* Impractical upload speeds after 10TB from what I’ve read.)
Thanks for a very helpful answer! :)
I did test Crypt.ee a while ago, and it was really nice then but it's even nicer now. It's fun to see it's improving a lot. Keep up the good work! :)
Have you designed the UI as well?
Hi there! 👋🏻
Maker here!
Oh how I wish this would be possible. PWAs can upload in the background, and that's not really the limitation here.
Currently this is physically impossible if you need to encrypt your photos first on your device before the upload, because mobile operating systems don't allow heavy computational tasks to run in the background –like encryption– for more than a few secs (or few operations). Take a look at #3 in this helpdesk article we have.
TLDR; You can trigger millions of "uploads" in the background if you want, no big deal, but you can't "encrypt" more than one or two photos on your device before "uploading" them in the background, thus making it impossible for Cryptee to have background uploads.
Mobile operating systems will most likely never allow these types of heavy background computational processes, (like the cryptographic operations Cryptee would need to perform in the background) simply because this allowance would very quickly and easily be abused by malicious apps to do things things like background, crypto-currency mining, or collect and send complex personal information about you & and your device in the background, without your knowledge. (and would wreck havoc to your device's battery life)
I can't comment on how Tresorit does this (and neither can anyone else) because their apps aren't open source. So you're effectively taking their word for it when it comes to encryption, and cannot individually verify their claims.
Hoping this makes sense and helps ✌🏻
Tutanota has contact storage. For photos, you could just store them locally and use a backup program like duplicati or rclone and point those tools at b2 or something, or use something like https://crypt.ee .
u/johnozbay is the creator of cryptee
I'd say you should keep it. All it is doing is making the website available via google's and similar routing stuff. People probably think that this is invading their privacy, but google or whomever it's routed through can't read your mails anyway, so I really don't understand the freakout either.
The routing is the way it is so if a government wants to shut off protonmail through this route, they would have to shut down a huge chunk of the internet too. (I believe crypt.ee (an encrypted google docs alternative) uses this technique as well.)
I've not found any fully equivalent alternative that's got optimal privacy. Crypt.ee is getting there, but is missing core features like sharing at the moment (it will hopefully get there given some more time).
The closest current equivalent I've found so far is Jottacloud - it's based in Norway (decent privacy laws) and runs on renewable energy, it's got a decent privacy policy (and a privacy guarantee), but isn't E2EE. They have a 5gb free tier to give them a try; I personally use the family plan.
You can try something with NextCloud, but the photo management isn't very good.
They have a family plan too, which I use, as even the smallest allowance (1TB) shared between up to 5 people is plenty. The storage is encrypted (as most clouds are), but not end-to-end. The only good E2EE provider I've found that also includes decent photo management is still Cryptee.
From a technical perspective, E2EE photo management with a nice UI really isn't easy, because the device has to handle encryption/decryption, as well as animations and previews. It's impressive that johnozbay made that effort.
anyone know good alternatives?
hosting would be good, but i tried nextcloud and they had a huge bug that wouldnt sync subfolders, so i went away from that. hosting your own cloud could get pricey. hosting it at home leaves the chance if anything happens there, no other off-site backup (like a fire).
cryptee looks decent, but no video yet afaik https://crypt.ee/
backblaze might be one im looking at, $6 month, backup anything https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-backup.html
Must read Guardian article about what happened when a reporter asked for her Instagram data under the new California CCPA law that went into effect Jan 1.
Note: reddit r/privacy friend u/JohnOzbay of the privacy cloud service Cryptee has the best quote in the article -- maybe the best quote in major press today:
>“This is the most bullshitty thing I have ever read”, said Ozbay of Cryptee about Instagram’s explanation of its refusal to delete the data.
lol Go, John!
I knew :\
I am now using sadly using Amazon Photos because there is really no alternative to Google Photos. Crypt.ee is lovely but without video uploading and sharing is not ok for me. Same video-problem with Piwigo.com. Can't find any other alternative to Google Photos :(
You're very welcome!
Of course! You can use both actually. Here's a semi-official trick you can use. Let's say your google account's email is : "".
Navigate to your account settings : (https://crypt.ee/account), and add "" as your recovery email. You'll receive a verification email, click the link & verify your email. From now on, you can login to your account in two different ways.
You can either log in using : 1) "" + your password. (email + password + encryption key) 2) Using your google account using the "G" button on the login page. (google auth + encryption key)
Once the email is verified, if it's a google-account email, Cryptee combines these login methods, and allows you to use both login methods. (That way you can even utilize this trick to not have to type your Cryptee password in front of someone for example, and instead click login using google etc. or vice versa) ✌🏻
I hope this makes sense!
Thanks for all the great questions! Always here to help in any way I can! ✌🏻
All the very best my friend!
Hi there, maker of Cryptee here! ✌🏻
Let me clarify a few things.
1 – If you've lost your encryption key there's no way to recover it, since your encryption key is never sent to Cryptee, we can't help you get it back either.
And you can go to your account settings from https://crypt.ee/account and delete your account without having to enter your encryption key. That's literally one of the reasons why we have an account password and a separate encryption key. One to authenticate you, and one to secure your data. 🔒
2 – Once you delete your account, all your data is deleted immediately. Hypothetically, even if it wasn't deleted immediately, the whole point of encryption is that we wouldn't be able to access your data anyway, so it would be a dead weight & unnecessary expense for us. Therefore we would have no reason to keep it.
3 – Once your account is deleted, your username / email will be released and available immediately, so you can sign up from scratch and continue using Cryptee with the same username if you wish.
4 – If you've contacted us via email or helpdesk, we can't delete or take action on your account via email or helpdesk for your own security, since someone may have gained access to your email.
Hoping these make sense and help!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help clarify / answer / improve your experience somehow! ✌🏻
Always here to help in any way I can!
All the very best,
J
Standard Notes - Cross Platform, Privacy Focused, Open Source
Cryptee - Cross Platform, Privacy Focussed
Notable - Beautiful UI, thats all I got XD
Android -> iPhone
Gmail -> ProtonMail
YEET'd the Google home I had. I'll just type my timers into the microwave.
I think the email and storage are the big ones. For storage, I'm using sync.com, but I'm not in love with it. Super clunky UI. I think I'll be moving to https://crypt.ee/ after this year is up with Sync.
If it's just storage you're interested in, then any E2EE cloud service is fine (Sync.com, Tresorit, etc.). For photo management however (creating albums etc.) the only decent one I know of is Crypt.ee - it's still young though, and is missing features like sharing at the moment, it also relies on the fact that it's a WebApp, so there are no native apps for it at the moment.
So at the moment, the best middle ground I've found (and personally use) is Jottacloud - it's not E2EE, but it's based in Norway, has a good privacy policy, and has decent photo management and sharing.
Cryptee (https://crypt.ee) is the closest thing i can think of next to Standard Notes. Only thing it doesn't check off your list is the ability to sync to "a cloud service of my choice" but it is great!
Standard Notes or Crypt.ee might be your best bets. The former is text only (like a .txt file) unless you upgrade for like $10 a month, but has encryption. The latter is more-so an encrypted google docs alternative but is as simplistic, has markdown support, image support, and more with your only limit being storage. (100mb free, $3/month for 10gb, more plans on website)
