My Top Three:
Plex = movies and higher def TV shows using my ipad
Vidcast = Streaming TV quickly when I get home
Rdio = ambient / party music
I'm definitely going to try out the cards for humanity apps!
I'm going to copy the instructions here for safekeeping.
> 1. Open Popcorn Time, search for a movie and start playing. Then pause it. 2. Open Chrome (with the Chromecast extension installed) 3. Go to this URL: https://dabble.me/cast/?video_link=http://[YOUR_COMPUTER_IP]:8888 4. Just click the cast button and play.
From an earlier post:
No idea if this still works.
I made something similar in an hour that uses nodejs to host static movie files on disk, including a HTML and JavaScript on the the client side that generates links to the files on the web server to vidcast based on what's on disk).
An example link can be https://dabble.me/cast?video_link=http://192.168.1.101/m.mp4
Since that Is an internal ip, it is secure as well, as long as you don't open your web port in your router, and there's no need to make a player interface since dabble has one already. Simple list the links on the server that chromecast can read, and send to dabble on click.
You could open the port on the the router, use a public ip, and cast anywhere in the world, but your files are open on open to the public at that point.
Haven't tried with the new build yet but I see no reason why it wouldn't continue to work. Enjoy!
Wrote this for a friend but it may be of some use to you..ask me any questions you have
You can cast the tab to chromecast but quality is degraded or you can use https://dabble.me/cast/
If it says it cannot find an .mp4 then the video is embedded in the webpage
Using Google Chrome
right click on the webpage with the video in it(go ahead and load the video and look for source name)
click "inspect element " you will see "sources" tab at the top
click on it
scroll down and find the video host name and you will see an "embed" link.
Right click on the that and Open it in new tab and click on vidcast most of the time it works but some online video players are incompatible
***EDIT Just tried with your requested site. It an FLV file so no casting using VIDCAST, look for an alternate source.
This shows you where to find what I mentioned
Here is the embedded video in it's original form which you can see is a FLV
I just open-sourced a project called Dabble Me (https://dabble.me) which is my attempt at an almost 1-for-1 OhLife replacement.

You can use VidCast or similar on any webpage that contains HTML5 video to send it straight to the Chromecast. https://dabble.me/cast/ drag the bookmarklet to your bookmarks, and then on any page that has HTML5 video click the bookmarklet and it will present you with a page with the video and a Chromecast button to send it to your Chromecast. As an example click on http://vimeo.com/36141149 here to get a video, click the bookmarklet which will open a page like https://dabble.me/cast/?video_link=http%3A%2F%2Fav.vimeo.com%2F85389%2F296%2F85127712.mp4%3Ftoken2%3D1400455940_9be6c2d077d556a567e5ad91dcc3dc05%26amp%3Baksessionid%3Dd6ebb7b614026882 and then click Play to choose a Chromecast.
Kind of - but not really.
https://dabble.me/cast/ will let you cast any compatible format video on any page - it's a bookmarklet
and
http://movies.foamsnet.com/url/
will let you enter a URL of stuff that the device can handle natively.
What would be nice is to not have to have a chrome browser or android/ios app involved.
native platform apis would be awesome.
Any chance something like Vidcast would work? I've used it from time to time on sites that don't work, but not sure how it works with something with a paywall like NBC Sports.

Any other suggestions? I've gone as far as plugging it directly to my TV, which works perfectly, then back into the Xbox. Also I only get the crackling with Google Music & YouTube, casting media files on phone or laptop is fine.
PS: This is awesome for web vids. I even wrote a TamperMonkey script to integrate it with noobroom https://dabble.me/cast/
this one . They usually put movies after its available in good quality. If you have chromecast , you can use this trick to stream it to TV.
Ill try some things out to cast it when i get home.
if this website works kind of like popcorn time that would be great.
try number one will be https://dabble.me/cast
try number 2 will involve http://movies.foamsnet.com/url/
side note you can stream any torrent using popcorn time as well by dragging it in.
edit: none of these things are going to magically fix the chromecasts lousy codec support, well maybe one of them does but it is beyond me.
Drag&Drop + ChromeCast doesn't seem to work for me either so instead I just load it in the internal player, pause it and press 'u' on the keyboard (this will copy the URL of the stream) and paste the URL in https://dabble.me/cast/ and cast it via the browser (no subtitles though). Don't close Popcorn Time when you're casting or else it will stop downloading the torrent.

I don't know if you happen to have a Chromecast or not, but you can plop the video file into https://dabble.me/cast and cast it. It's a bit of work to find the video file, but you'll see it load in developer tools under the network tab.
It supports about 700 sites already, so I'm not sure "a couple" is an accurate estimation. The Chromecast sample apps are a great start to get something up & running yourself - it took me about 3 hours to build VidCast.
I also recently added the URL field, and there's a bit of an open API by sending any URL to https://dabble.me/cast/index.html?video_link={REPLACED_WITH_ENCODED_VIDEO_URL}.
The bookmarklet is really where the site support comes in, and that's in JS at https://dabble.me/cast/bookmarklet.js so you could steal that, make edits so that it grabs the correct URL on the sites you want and host yourself. If you provide the JS and it works, I'd happily add it to the official VidCast bookmarklet.
Aah, didn't realize that Popcorn Time was a downloaded app. In that case, I don't believe Videostream will work for you.
You could always try VidCast. Very Similar, but this one should cast the content on the localhost page you watch it on. Similar to casting the tab, but in theory, it should run a bit better.
Ah okay, so what you need to do is replace "YOUR_COMPUTER_IP" with your actual IP address. On windows, navigate to your control panel and find the IP address for your PC. I'm on a mac, so I'm not sure of the exact spot to find it, so google it. For example, this is how my link looks when I load up a video -
Can also use vidcast to cast Popcorn Time to Chromecast:
Popcorn Time + Chromecast
http://cs506307v4.vk.me/u202890263/videos/c58c6e3a35.720.mp4 thats the video url i was using https://dabble.me/cast/index.html?video_link=http%3A%2F%2Fcs506307v4.vk.me%2Fu202890263%2Fvideos%2Fc58c6e3a35.720.mp4&submit=Go thats the dabble url, the chromecast just doesnt react at all when i click cast

Wait are you tab casting it or using the dabble site?
Just use the dabble site. If the bookmarklet doesn't make any sense you can just create the URL yourself.
https://dabble.me/cast/?video_link=http://your.local.ip:8888/
