Oh god. That’s my nightmare - putting stuff up on zoom like that. /shudder
I use DayOne. I do pay for a subscription but even the free version is pretty damned good. I used the free one for several months before I committed. It’s been almost a year now since I’ve been paying (it’s about to renew so I know for sure) and I have zero regrets).
Yes, I think it is a great thing to do.
For the past several years, I've been using electronic apps to just record literally what happened on what day. Maybe 25 words in fragments "worked at location" "watched Archer" "son made eggplant" "helped clean kitchen" because sometimes something comes in that is interesting.
Currently using Day One https://dayoneapp.com/features/ but have used others. Like how it makes it easy to see what else happened on this day, and can drop in a picture or two.
Really, really writing I have tried in paper and using 750words.com from time to time but I've never gotten a month-long streak, but what I do have is sometimes interesting.
I have a daily habit. Every morning I review my task list then open a template I created in DayOne (there are others but this one works for me with prompt/reminders, templates and other features). I go through my intentions for the day and reflect on the previous day. If inspiration sparks I will create multiple entries in a day.
It has greatly improved my mental health to let go of social media and record everything in my journal for myself and myself alone. I now am more selective about what I choose to share.
Daily affirmations can be a good thing to add as well. The app I use has an “on this day” type feature which is also nice.
You’ve also touched on something important. The need for things to be “correct” with regard to grammar, word choice and spelling go away when journaling for me as well. I’ve improved my cognitive process when approaching writing anything as my anxiety around it is far less than it used to be.
Journaling is the best improvement I’ve made in my life in some time. I agree everyone should try it to see if it works for them.
I'm a big fan of 'Day One', in spite of the cost (it's a subscription). It syncs between all your devices, automatically tracks time / date / location, let’s you keep separate 'journals' and supports tags for easy organizing, is easy to search by date, location, see entries on a map, include photos - and has reminders, if you need that. Also has export options. I use it pretty frequently to remember specifics about places I've gone, dates, etc - on top of the whole journaling/ diary thing.
Relatedly: Day One just got bought up by the same folks that run Tumblr and WordPress.
As usual they say it’s no big deal, everything is fine, nothing will change. But we should all know by now that’s never completely true.

Maybe this will help. I can’t remember much about the free version since I’ve been a paid user for a few years. https://dayoneapp.com/pricing/ AFAIK your entires are stored on their server with end-to-end encryption. I do believe that you are limited to number of journals you can have on the free version. You should be able to check sync status and encryption status in Day One’s settings.
For sync, click settings > Sync > Sync Status.
For journal encryption, click settings > journals > select your journal > advanced.
If you do have E2E enabled you may want to export the key and save it someplace safe. Settings > Sync > Encryption Key.
If you need more information you should be able to contact support via Day One. Click settings > support > contact support. The turn around time for replies was pretty quick last time I had to use it.
Hope that helps.
Use a journal for five minutes, every morning. I use the free Day One app (on your phone is easiest).
For me it was the magic bullet.
Every morning (in bed, before anything else) make three simple notes in the app:
Identifying the previous days success and failure, noting how you feel about them today, and setting your intentions for today does 3 things:
1. creates a line of continuity. the things you did yesterday, the day before, and today are connected. they have a pattern. change the pattern, change your life.
2. holds you accountable, making you motivated to do better than yesterday, or keep a good streak going.
3. keeps a record, so you can look back in three months, or a year, when you are dealing with similar struggles, and see how you turned it around, and how to get back on track.
It's free and only takes 5 minutes a day, and it's changed my life (health habits, work goals, self-encouragement, follow-through)
You can modify your behavior! Use journaling—it's easy, free and it works. Good luck!
I’m a big fan of https://dayoneapp.com (it is available on Android even if their website doesn’t show it) - lots of amazing (private) memories in addition to pulling in my posts from Instagram if I’ve made any!
Here’s the website: https://dayoneapp.com/
It’s a very easy to use journal system. You can also make as many journals as you want so if you want to separate certain topics like having a stand alone health journal or gratitude journal, you can do that. It backs up and syncs over the cloud with all Apple devices.
I am pretty bare bones with it, but you can use prompts, set up templates and reminders to use the app, and you can even have a physical book printed of your entries if you want. There’s a free version but I like it so much I decided to support them and get a yearly subscription which I think is about $25/year.
You can easily add photos or audio if you want, it’s searchable, and it will show you what happened on that day in years past. It will even insert your location and the weather for that day. It’s got a very clean, straightforward interface. It’s just really good at what it does and is super functional.
You can use markdown within code blocks to create tables: https://dayoneapp.com/blog/tip-using-markdown-tables-in-day-one Even if you’re unfamiliar with markdown it’s super easy and you can just copy from this article.
I like Day One myself. It's for Apple devices only (Mac, iPhone, iPad) but it has a great design and very useful journaling templates to make it easy to keep track of things. And your data is stored with strong encryption, too.
Io sto approfondendo Go come alternativa a Typescript.
I started keeping a diary in January using the Day One app. Little did I know what I'd be writing about.
While I've been writing just for me, I'm starting to think about what others will read when I'm gone...
It's sobering to look mortality in the face...
I was never motivated when it came to digital journaling but I've been using Day One since the app first came out on the Mac/iPad/iPhone. Otherwise, I just use my Moleskine Expanded.
Are you using the Apple pencil/a stylus and want to handwrite your entries or do you want a place to type them?
If you're writing by hand with a stylus: a lot of the apps people use for digital bullet journals will work - Good Notes, Notability, One Note, etc. They're on the App Store.
If you're typing: Day One is nice in that it lets you add things like the current weather, what you're currently doing/location (so if you're journaling somewhere special), as well as adding photos, videos and such to your journal entries. I haven't paid for the sub, I'm using the free version right now, and it suits my needs. You can check out Day One here.
From my understanding, you subscribe and you get access to sync across all platforms. No need to sign up twice or anything. You can site down and write as much as you want without any issues. Iv gone and started on my iPhone and picked it up on my iPad without issues before. Here’s a link that might help that goes through some more detail.
I think https://dayoneapp.com/ can achieve something close to this with daily reminders and templates features, I've thought about setting something similar up, but just haven't really had the time.
I'm terrible at keeping up with written journals, and I wanted something that was quick and easy for my husband and me to jot down notes and pictures. I found the Day One journal app and am super excited that we can send the digital journals to a printer.
I use Day One for my morning pages. It's doing a great job in terms of privacy, you can lock your journal under a password and there are some encryption features available. You do need to pay for Premium for it to sync across devices but it's only $3/month or so.
