Fantastical does exactly this and in my opinion is a better designed app than MagiCal or iStat Menus. As to why something similar isn't built in - I suppose Apple is more interested in core apps. (hardy har har)
Developers are doing a fine job filling any niche gaps.
I take your meaning and very much agree, but the best replacement for this I've found is Fantastical which lives in your menu. It integrates with your actual calendar.
I picked it all up from Fantastical's FAQ, URL scheme info is near the bottom of this page.
The natural language recognizer will work for start and end times and due dates. It's pretty easy but here's the tips and tricks from the website that explain how plus some other things you can do.
With customspotlightaction I used the first URL you wrote to add events, for example "e lunch with John at Starbucks from 1 to 2". That would add an event called "lunch with John" with the location and time.
I used this URL
fantastical2://parse?sentence=%@&reminder=1
to add reminders, for example "r get John's keys at 12:30". Which would create a reminder like you would expect.
Fantastical - http://flexibits.com/fantastical Can quickly view your calendar and easily add new items using natural language, ie. "meeting with bob next thursday at 2"
Cloud.app - http://getcloudapp.com/ Simple file/screenshot sharing. Auto-upload your screenshots and paste the URL anywhere.
Use this on your Mac: http://flexibits.com/fantastical
Try this on your iPhone: http://mysterioustrousers.com/calvetica or http://mysterioustrousers.com/tempus
They all integrate with your iCal, so you can still use iCloud.
Zooom2 – move and resize windows without clicking those controls or even bringing them to the front – I won't use a Mac without this any more!
Fantastical – menu-bar calendar pops up to let you create new iCal events by typing natural language like "Dinner with Dad Tues 8pm" or "Vacation Aug 12 to 20"
I'm finding it a bit buggy/slow when switching to the app from the complication. (the date/time will show up but not the main calendar information)
And there seem to be 2 complications:
- The small one for the corner where you have a circle with the number of events inside (can't figure out why sometimes the full circle is there and sometime just a quarter or two)
- the big complication for the (for example) bottom of the utility face.
I'm all for discovery but these release notes are pretty vague re the watch. {link}(http://flexibits.com/fantastical-iphone/releasenotes)
(It is the 1st 3rd party app with complications that I have though...)
Big fan of Fantastical. It sits on my toolbar and I can enter dates and to-dos in plain English. eg: "Meeting with Kelly Friday at 2". I use it as a front-end to Google Calendar but it can also act as a frontend for the standard Apple Calendar app. http://flexibits.com/fantastical
I dig Fantastical. You just type in "Clean the house by Friday afternoon at 3" and it creates a reminder labeled "Clean the house" with a deadline of Jan. 17 at 3 PM.
Calendar events are just as easy. And it all syncs up with iCal/Reminders/Outlook instantly
It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish...I use iCal, but I couldn't tell you the last time I actually opened and used iCal. I have MenuCalendarClock, in my menu bar, I used to use Fantastical, and I have all of my events sync to my Google Calendar online (thus accessible on my Android phone).
So, even though I'm using iCal as my backbone, I never actually use the app.
