Better to buy the Gothic pack alone.
Arcania doesn't worth the price (neither Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods Enhanced Edition).
Gothic are great hardcore RPG. Even if Gothic 1 aged a lot and Gothic 3 is below its older brothers.
All offer several mods : here and here for the main part, they are must have, don't even bother playing without them.
About Gothic 1, you'll have to disable the steam overlay in order to make it run on Steam.
Works fine on 7 64b. Still got some random crashes but it's manageable.
There is always l'hiver mod which not only increases the difficulty but also makes the world a lot more beautiful but ,personally, I'm not a fan of it. If you only want an increased difficulty, you can do it yourself with NOTR Customizer.
I really loved Gothic 3 and played it a long time, but I can't say much about 1 and 2 except something I heard from friends who played it (like that it has a great athmosphere but awful controls), so i'll talk about Gothic 3:
I completely agree with WWWeirdguy...the game just feels kind of oldschool and has an excellent athmosphere and varied landscapes. The game also has a faction system: you can help the rebels or the orcs, and some of the quests also let you occupy towns for your faction.
When I first bought it it was buggy as hell and the combat had some aweful flaws, like the allready mentioned stunlock-wolfes and boars, but the community made some awesome patches that fixed most of the flaws (I'm in germany and I don't know if these patches are available for international versions, sadly).
About Arcadia: Gothic 4 and the Gothic 3 addon: those weren't made by the original developer Piranha Bytes because they and their publisher Deep Silver parted after a lawsuit with DS keeping the Gothic rights...if you want to play a RPG with the old Gothic-feel to it, get Risen, the spiritual successor of Gothic made by Piranha Bytes.
edit: Found 'em! All the community patches are available for all languages here.
Install a fresh copy of Gothic.
Install the 1.08k patch.
Link: http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_6.htm This is the official latest patch for the game.
Link: http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=28 The player kit allows you to run mods.
Link: http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1340357-Release-Gothic-%C2%BD-%C2%97-SystemPack-%28ENG-DEU%29 Download the 'Gothic 1 Classic' version of the System Kit - the downloads section is at the bottom of the first post. The system kit modifies the engine to allow many modern features such as high-res support, widescreen, higher render distance, removes FPS lock, etc and is required for most mods.
I don't know anything about the whole Steam situation, but i assume all patches, etc. are already applied.
What i do know: You are currently playing one of my all time favourites! I must have played Gothic I & II a ridiculous amount of times. I love those games. Especially I & II. So you better enjoy it as much as you can!
Regarding controls: First few times i played as intended with keyboard controls. Later on i mapped the keys to a PS2-Controller via Xpadder or Antimicro to make it a little more comfy. Keyboard controls are fine though.
Is this going to be your first playthrough? If it is, good luck and have fun, it is truly one of the best games of my childhood.
I wouldn't recommend you getting the game off steam, it doesn't have the latest patch, just get the game from the Internet, and the community patches and mods from http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic3/
You should download the latest community patch, the quest pack and another patch I cannot remember it's name right now.
Also, I haven't played forsaken gods, but I have read about it a lot and watched gameplays, and..I'm pretty sure you shouldn't get it. If you'll finish Gothic like 4 times and and get sick of it, only then you should get it. Getting the game/mods/patches shouldn't be so hard, but feel free to PM me if you're having problems.
Edit: Latest community patch
There are more audio files assoctiated with the string "You're in for it now": SVM_1_DieEnemy.WAV SVM_4_YouDareHitMe.WAV SVM_5_DieEnemy.WAV SVM_7_YouDareHitMe.WAV SVM_10_YouDareHitMe.WAV SVM_11_DieEnemy.WAV SVM_14_DieEnemy.WAV SVM_16_DieEnemy.WAV SVM_17_DieEnemy.WAV
Beside GothicVDFS, you can also use ANX Game Audio Player to scan sounds.vdf and speech.vdf (not sure in which vdf are the ambient sounds), and if I am not wrong, to export the desired file.
I absolutely love the Gothic series, especially Gothic II with Night of the Raven. The gameplay is similar to Skyrim&Oblivion, though it's not quite as massive (still huge though!)
The first one is great but I know some people have a harder time getting into it. The second one has a few characters from the first, but you don't miss a lot by skipping the first if you can't get into it.
If you decide you want to give it a go, there are some mods available here that update graphics and stuff.
Each game has different factions you can join, allowing for multiple playthroughs, and incredibly immersive worlds. Highly recommended.
Gothic 1: http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=129 or http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=121
Gothic 2: http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1145749-G2-MOD-Vurt-s-Gothic-II-Graphics-Overhaul
I think Gothic II looks just fine with the default textures.
You can spawn usable objects but I've never heard of spawning buildings. As far as I know this would be the complete list of insertable cheats. http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic3/?go=g3insert
You can compare to this list if you like but I don't think you'd see any difference. ftp://ftp.sequr.info/PUB/Games/Gothic%203/G3iMap/LANG/English/cheatlist.html
If u have the Gothic 2 gold edition, these are the 3 patches you need to fix any compatibility issues with newer systems:
Yes, that is correct. One of the paladins in the castle will tell you where three of the four dragons are (I forget his name, but Garond will tell you to talk to him). The dragons are in the new camp, at the old tower Lester was at in Gothic I for the focus stones quest, near Cavalorn's hut (two dragonhunters will help you), and the other is just to the south. You can see them all on a map here: http://www.worldofgothic.com/images/g2karten/oldworld.jpg
During my first play of G3 few years ago (before the mods) I was quite packed and I was liberating cities one after one. In the end, I only got 11 chalices and I couldn't get the last one and now that You said that, I don't remember talking to Bengard. However, if You find him and you don't have any dialogue option, just beat him and take the chalice. Or, should you fail to do so, try cheatmode http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic3/?go=g3cheats and "insert It_FiremageCup"
Oh, it's a must-play for the series! The story is fantastic and the options are just amazing. NotR is especially a good detour to gain experience before heading to the Valley of Mines.
I just got through my second-ever playthrough and would recommend following this post on GOG to enhance the game with a few patches and graphics mods: Gothic 2 Patches and Mods on GOG Forums
I would avoid the IronKeep community patch, as people have reported that it unfortunately makes the game less stable. I played without it and didn't run into a single crash or game-breaking bug.
Night of the Raven does make the game a bit more difficult, sometimes frustratingly so (though many do enjoy how brutal it can get). Since I was aiming for a quicker, easier playthrough, I used the NotR Customizer to tweak a few things this time around.
Enjoy playing! You'll have a blast. :)
Gothic 2 is probably my favorite RPG. It's far better than Gothic 3 (which is still good though). The graphics and such is a little outdated I suppose, if you want something more recent, but there are also fan made patches/mods available for all of the games here. Some improve textures, others and story and stuff.
The games are not quite as expansive as say Elder Scrolls games, but the story is pretty fantastic and the world is beautiful. There are some recurring characters between the games and some story stuff but if you don't want to start with 1 because you're looking for something newer, that's alright (though it is a great game).
tl;dr I recommend starting with 2 if you think 1 is too outdated. It's a fantastic game.
You can find a few patches/community mods here that should improve the graphics! I haven't actually tried any for Gothic 2 but I have used one from that site for the first one. Enjoy your replay!
Not only Admin mode, but running in XP SP2 or SP3 compatibility mode seems to work as well. And also has been known to fix some minor lag issues.
Highly recommend the Community Patches for all three games if you're just starting for the first time.
Gothic 1 improvement tools semi-guide
And don't even bother playing past 3... the quality of the games tanks after 2 imo, but 3 can still be fun, especially with the fixes and prettier graphics.
If you want more, get your hands on Risen 1 as well. Has that same Gothic feel and is really quite enjoyable.
EDIT: some spelling
There are many patches/mods that update the Gothic series games available at World of Gothic. They don't make it perfect but I recommend testing them and seeing what you like.
First apply the 1.08k patch then try to launch the game, if it still fails then try the unofficial patch 1.0. The unofficial patch breaks more than it fixes, so I wouldn't use it unless patch 1.08k doesn't fix the problem.
Thanks, I used GoMan which you can download from http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=84
It’s a tool that lets you edit game files. Unfortunately it’s not so simple. You have to use the tool to go into the data files and find the default player skin and overwrite the file. I extracted a few files and used photoshop to edit my own texture, then replaced the player texture. I would love to find out a way to just make it into a mod and create more textures but I have no idea how to do this lol. I can upload the texture if you want though.
Did you pass the dead paladins looking for him? You should pass a couple of dead bodies before finding Diego at his campfire, but if you don't see them, you may be in the wrong place.
This may be the map you're using, but should be correct: http://www.worldofgothic.com/images/g2karten/diggers_and_ore.jpg
He's in a small box canyon just SW of the castle.
I think Dark Secrets and Dark Mysteries is the same thing.

You can find it here: http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=154
It's older version but noone knows what the new one does besides horrible difficulty settings.
Here's a complete overview of the claw on the world of gothic website, has everything you will ever need to know about it!
Just get the gothic 2 notr customizer, you can change a lot of things if you think gothic 2 notr is unfair http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=100
The weed gang limits you out of the two highest tiers of magic, unfortunately (circles 5 and 6). You simply won't be given the opportunity to learn them.
If you don't know, the ability to cast magic in Gothic 1 (and 2, for that matter) is depended on having learned magic circles. There are 6 of them, and you learn the circles in order. Each spell requires you to have attained a certain circle of magic.
If you want to know the spells and the required circles (to see what you miss out with the weed gang), you can find them here.
There is a notr patch, which was done before Gothic 2 Gold released with English dub. It basically is english subs only, minus console commands and ch and sh. Worked over steam version for me - install german version, install systempacks required to run NotR, then install it from http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=24
So do it! German voice over rocks, compared to English version. I installed german steam version, patches required to run game and then applied community translation patch, which was done before English release, from here
in gothic 2 I think you can move the camera to any x/y maybe z point you want, so maybe he just moved the camera like that http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic2/?go=g2cheats
Maybe it works for gothic 1 but usually gothic 2 cheats are a bit better documented, so I'd look on both lists if I were you.
P.S. I think he also removed most of the character texture from whta it looks like. He left his hands though.
There is a "mod tool" that allows you to make custom difficultly for G2:NotR. I am not sure if it works with other mods, including L'Hiver Here's the link: http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=100
Apparently, for Polish version of survivorless version of the mod there's a submod that restores G2 Gold difficulty
If you know the spell name, by finding the spell name on the world of gothic, you can quickly search the same spell on the english version of world of gothic
I don't remember any water equivalent of rain of fire( i believe that is Feuerregen in DE version)

That said, Rain of Fire on G3 seens to deal more damage than Hailstorm BUT hailstorm seens to last long, takes less time to cast and be able to target enemies at greater range. This is a "trope" among all gothic games. Fire spells deals more damage but face more resistance on enemies, has longer charging time and other drawbacks.
Looks like what you want is ItWr_PaladinLetter_MIS, which is supposedly the letter to Lord Hagen. If that's not it, check here (http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic2/?go=insert_g2missionitems_kap2) and try some other codes. The link you posted is for the add-on codes, so it seems like you were just looking in the wrong place. Hope that helps.
You can get a free armor in the New Mine without even joining a camp. It's not very good, but it's better than nothing. Here's a list of all teachers in G1.
Can't really recommend anything in terms of guides, but I'm sure someone else will be able to. About sneak though, I've never put any points into it, pickpocketing, or lockpicking in G1 myself, so I can't really talk about how useful those are
A bit late to the party in here, but have you tried the Gothic 2 Customizer?
It basically let's you alter some numerical values, like how many hitpoints or learning points you get every level up, the damage enemies and you deal, the gold value of items, stat requirements for weapons, etc.
but from the main website (NOTR)
trolls have a negative arrow protection.
http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic2/?go=addonmonster
I did however tried to kill one with the best bow, they get no damage. so I suppose using a master sword will be a must vs very few monsters
This mod adds craftable weapons, I'm not sure about any others. http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=131
There are also some mod kits on the site, but I haven't tried any of them so I don't know how powerful they are
I was just browsing through the top posts here and I saw your comment, what a coincidence! Anyway, you can try this mod to make Gothic 1 look better.
Oh man I'm excited for you! Haha I loved Gothic 2, especially with Night of the Raven. It's probably one of my favorite games of all time (at least top 3). Here's a link with some mods/community patches that should improve graphics and gameplay :)
It's been a while since I've played the Gothic games, but I do remember Gothic 3 is really buggy. I would get the community patch if you decide on playing it.
People have mentioned the Gothic series on here, I just want to add to that
To me it's on the same level as TES games in terms of favorites (though partly due to sentimental reasons). The games are fun, with lots of options that give replayability. They aren't as massive as some of the Elder Scrolls games but they still have plenty of content.
Gothic II with the expansion is by far the best in the series (IMO). Gothic I is fun and adds to the story if you want all of it, but you can skip it if you are just looking for one game.
You can find a bunch of mods and patches at World of Gothic. The games go on sale on Steam and gog from time to time.

Arcania is an abomination. Jowood took the IP from the original devs and gave it to some studio to "americanise" it. Basically, they dumbed it down.
The open world exploration was replaced with Fable style linearity, the combat was dumbed down so it would be pretty much impossible to die, stealing and most interactions with NPCs were removed and the endings from G3 were ignored...
In short: save your money, Arcania is awful. Get Risen 1 and Risen 2 instead. That's the series the original devs made when they lost the rights to the Gothic name. They are pretty much unofficial sequels playing in the same universe (though characters and places from the Gothic universe are only mentioned in easter eggs.)
This is the #1 Gothic fansite. It's that big even the original devs are active on there. I linked you to the community patches, however i don't know if they work with the enhanced edition. You might want to check the forums.
Gothic 3 community patch 1.74
http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=166
and whenever the english content mod and quest pack come add those on and you have something awesome.
