Don't trust the opinions of anyone who says "just use the start menu" as an alternative to Alfred. They've either never used Alfred or never used the start menu.
Check out Wox or Keypirinha for the launcher functionality. And AutoHotKey for making global hotkeys.
> I've tried both Wox and Launchy
I'm running Keypirinha at work but it's honestly not very good. Maybe I should try out Wox.
> I run a Windows PC for occasionally testing code, and playing games, and the OS has matured a lot in the last several years
I honestly don't see it. A lot of people always praise Windows 7 as being the best Windows release, but I don't get that one either. There's just so little to like about the entire Windows platform. Be it usability or functionality-wise, it's all pretty subpar IMHO. Windows 10 has done nothing to make me think different. Sure, it's necessary for running games but that's just because it's the predominant platform.
> and for devs like myself the addition of a better terminal, and Windows subsystem for Linux, make the argument for it being a solid dev machine as well
But isn't that just like bringing a gourmet meal to a McDonald's and saying that it's a pretty good restaurant? I've been developing professionally on Windows for close to 10 years and find the experience pretty dreadful. C# is a pretty decent language, but even that is available on other platforms. Jesus, maybe I should find a new job. 😄
They do not serve the same purpose! Everything allows fast searching on your file-systems. Keypirinha allows to execute virtually any kind of task. In fact, for convenience you can query Everything from Keypirinha if both are running on your machine.
Something like http://keypirinha.com/ or build/find something similar in ahk. The idea with a fuzzy launcher is to have a single binding then type a few letters and your script runs. I tend to just use aliases or fzf in my terminal for that though.
Sorry if this is slightly OT, but I tried out pretty much all launchers (that include start menu entries as I don't want to set everything up manually) and switched from launchy long ago (slight execution and search delay), I've finally settled on Keypirinha which is utterly amazing (and Open Source; kinda. I don't think it's OSI approved but very permissive) in both speed and features.
And while I'm posting anyway: What advantage does going wsl -> ssh give you over Powershell -> ssh?
My friend, I've been thinking about the same kind of tools that could help people with ADHD. For me it was to-do lists. I do a lot of work on the computer (software programming) and I noticed that the problem with to-do lists is they aren't fast to use, you have to bring up some software, click stuff and enter it with a bunch of distractions in the process. I thought the perfect way to do to-dos is a global keyboard shortcut which brings up a textbox to type and another way to bring up a bigger window with a list of to-dos to manage them. It turns out this kind of software already exists, but not for to-dos specifically. It's called Keypirinha, a launcher for Windows. Plugins can be written in Python so somebody could write ADHD-oriented tools if they wanted. I know a few languages but not Python, so I've been thinking it would be a great project to learn it in the future unless anyone here wants to do it first.
The great thing about Keypirinha is the ability for plugins to do sub-commands. So with the plugin you're suggesting (which sounds awesome by the way) you could have a command to list all the current entries, a command to create new entries, one to clear the stack, etc.
I really hate the way that they got rid of the ctrl-x+P for control panel, but its made me learn the run commands: https://www.pcsteps.com/1675-run-command-complete-list-windows/
I'm also a huge fan of Keypirinha for my own workstations: http://keypirinha.com/ . But obviously that doesn't help for RDPing to servers, jump boxes, or working on other people's computers.
Also have a read of this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/8szl6i/whatre_your_productivity_boosters/
>Wox
i've used Wox before but found it to be sluggish. I much prefer the speedier Keypirinha. It does hook up with Everything and has some nice plugins. (Not as many as WOX tho)
I use Keypirinha as my quick launcher.
It's a great tool, but requires some configuration to fully appreciate it (by default it indexes directories and non-executable files as well, which I find to be badly overkill — once you configure it to only index executables, it's great).
Take a look at the documentation. The most important thing when doing this is that you cannot edit the template in the left window and all modifications must be preceeded by their category (ie. [gui]
or [app]
).
Let me know if there's something you don't understand.
Appreciate the response. Whats the skinny on plugins? I looked at the docs under plugins
> Plugins
> In the context of Keypirinha, a Plugin is a software component written in Python3 that extends the base features of the application. It is always encapsulated in a package.
When I click on the packages link I just move up the page to the packages section:
> Packages
> A Package is a container of one or several plugins and that represents a unique feature visible to the user.
Which just contains a link back to the plugins definition.
