With Locus (the best app for Android ever) you can show the heatmap above the map of your choice, which would be an OSM Cycle themed map in my case. Explained here:
haha sorry to hear about it .. yes this is exactly the kind of reason why I ask. If you haven't seen it I've found Locusmap excellent and bought the paid version (on Android). Actually I was just looking at it more closely and realise it may actually be to provide something like this (or they may be open to further developing in this are) http://www.locusmap.eu/the-best-setting-of-locus-bike-navigation/
I have honestly been through most every GPS app out there, including the paid version of Gai, and the most idiot proof is LocusMaps.
Much easier to use, modern interface, highly customizable, import/export, a slew of maps free and purchased (many with trails already rendered) and bottom line a smarter product with consistent meaningful updates.
No relation, just hate to see bad product at high prices (if get my money back if I could) and locusmaps has been excellent on backcountry, cycling, boating and more.
If your phone has legit GPS, go get a free app like LocusGPS, even for an area that you think you know like the back of your hand.
Grab offline imagery.
Use it for ranging, by setting a distance point on the imagery and then asking Locus to tell you how far away it is.
Determine a compass heading to get you back to a waypoint, which you can then use with a manual, old school compass to get your ass back to wherever you were going.
Tell you you have been going the absolute.wrong.way in a whiteout, which you didn't realize because 50 yard visibility is real, real bad for not getting lost even in an area you know super well.
Tracking down a downed animal - see where you have been and should go via a snail trail (aka "track").
Get topo maps and see contours.
And, never, ever get lost, because you always know where you are.
Locus is a great app that has TONS of options (probably too many for most). You can choose almost any map known to man. You can save them for offline use. You can plot points, navigate, make custom points, routes, etc.... Check it out. Maybe you'll like it. You can upload any gpx file to the strava website.
Edit: Here's a link to their website. http://www.locusmap.eu/
They have a free version of their app. I've had it for almost 4 years now and I really need to get around to paying the $8 for the pro version just to support the development. They are constantly working on this one and I never have problems.
See if Locus could help. It now has support for dropbox, so you can create a list if places on one device and distribute it with dropbox.

I'm using it for offline maps and geocaching mainly, but it could be used for what you're looking for...
