I've been in the business for about 3 years, and that is what I've known beforehand/picked up on the way. The trick is to know the whole chart by heart not by memorizing but by experience. You'll get the hang of it. The worst thing you can do at your job is completely rely on a chart like this as you go along, otherwise you're not going to grow, and you aren't using your fluid intelligence.
Best of luck with your job! PM/reply if you need any clarifications or other tips.
Rain's actually a planned feature, including systems to capture rain water for drinking water.
The mind map should be up to date, so you can see some stuff there. Thing is, I remember almost everyone wanting them to work on the performance. And working on/fixig performance is not something that is done overnight.
You're TOTALLY the first one to come up with this idea!!1! NOT.
If you guys would bother 5min and look at the f***ing mindmap you would find out that it has been on there for MONTHS.
I am sorry for being harsh, but I am sick of reading the very same suggestions week after week because people are to lazy to use the search function or have a look at the mindmap/list of suggestions...
Was suggested a gazillion times before (use the search function), is on the Mindmap as a planned vehicle and there are even Screenshots and videos of them.
That's what Rust currently is and I respect your opinion but this game has gone as far in the direction of "gun-fps" as it should for now.
We have an extensive variety of firearms and ammunition, guns that offer different playstyles and an okay-curve from early to late (gun wise, gameplay wise not at all since there is a massive lack of content).
Take a look at the mindmap http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
The "Better Weapons" part looks pretty good by now, yet things of the "Priority" list are lackluster at best.
Also, the weapons part doesn't even make quarter of the mindmap while things like farming (which in its current state is a farce. I grew up on a farm and I can tell you that much, the farming in rust is as close to reality as russia is to a civilized country. Hint: Extremely far away) makes a pretty chunk just as a feature itself.
Rust is and can be so much more than just your generic survival shooter game and in my opinion it should be! because why not? There are so many shooters out there, if I want to go marry round and round and shoot people I play CoD. If I want to play a survival game in which you don't just kill people mindlessly all the time I want to play Rust.
I run with a decent size group and I'm definitely not bashing on groups anywhere in my post and I didn't mention lone wolves at all either.
Also on the mind map passive defenses are already planned.

It'd be cool to see an updated 'future rust' plan (http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143). The first iteration was seriously awesome and got me really pumped for what was to come. I'm sure your plans have evolved over the weeks- would love to hear about the evolved far out and not-so-far-out ideas!! :D
It's also great to see all the progress you've made on it. Wow
I've only played Rust of the two, but it depends on what he likes. If he's more into PvP, I'd go with Rust. There's currently no real PvE threats in the game, so PvP is the centerpiece. There's a ton of raiding bases, killing on sight, and running for your life. However, there are PvE servers where other players can't attack other players and bases can't be raided, but, again, there are currently no real threats to your survival outside of other players. There are plans to add more environmental threats (both weather and enemies) but it's unknown how far off those additions will be. But the devs are very active and significant updates occur on a weekly basis.
From what I've heard from friends, H1Z1 sounds a whole lot like Rust but, of course, with zombies. They've said that the zombies are real easy to kill outside of cities but there are tons in them, so you just kinda run in and grab whatever you can and get out. Killing on sight also apparently occurs frequently in H1Z1, but that should be expected in these types of games I suppose.
Personally, I would go with Rust. It's far from perfect and has a long way to go in terms of what they intend to add (see their plans here), but it is fun and challenging and the devs are active and consistent. It's also worth nothing that apparently H1Z1 is going to be free-to-play eventually, but that will only happen when the game is fully complete. I believe they estimated that to happen later this year, but I wouldn't really count on a certain date until it actually happens.
flying is inside the mind map posted by garry. the ways of flying i hope will be many, hang gliders should definetly be one of those.

I believe the trading system you mentioned is what the Facepunch team is going for actually. Looking at their mindmap (which is a bit outdated I think, since some things on it have already been implemented) you can see they want to have a server-transitioning system where certain servers would be richer in a certain resources, allowing them to be imported and exported by players.
Propably yes. They are looking into user created content, nobody knows yet how it's exactly supposed to work to not be immersion breaking and to not fck up balance.
Yes, there are randomly generated worlds as well as static maps ('Hapis island') - depends on the server.
They are already in, pumpkins and corn. Work in progress tho.
Propably you're in the wrong biome, in the rgassland/forest there's usually hemp everywhere.
They do have effects on you. You loose health and die if you are too cold or too hot for too long.
Planned
Have a look at the mindmap of planned features, pretty much everything you mentioned is explained there. http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
ALL of these have been suggested some several times, Facepunch even did concept art for some of these ideas long before anyone thought of them, others have also provided concept art of their own. http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
Working on three parts. TvT, TvP and TvZ.
Far from finished, and I dont suppose ill finish soon, because i dont have experience with a lot of the builds, but in the future maybe :)
Check out this link (if you haven't), it's a mindmap for rust which was released some months ago I believe. It gives a general idea of how they envision the game's future.
no, it's one of the known bug of the mind map, in there there's written: "uncrouching happens client side regardless of restrictions" and it's labelled as "urgent" http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143 but it's a very old bug, so i don't know how many hopes there will be for a fix soon.
Prone is on the mind map, but it's in the 'maybe' section... which is strange to me. Now that we can't turn grass off anymore, it's one of the best ways to hide from others if there are no bushes around.
I think we will never get the same exact experience, legacy provided, in the new Rust. Things are going to change, if it's for the better or worse is a matter of taste.
But it was kind of inevitable that Rust would change. Even if Garry kept legacy going, things would have changed. Most of the visuals were placeholders and the game was pretty unpolished, after all.
I think we just need to wait a bit longer for the game to get more updates. Adrenaline inducing events will definitely come back.
In the meantime you can take a peek at the Dev Map to see what Facepunch has planned for Rust: Link

There was just a link for what to do when your opponent does "x" flow chart, but i cant seem to find it atm

cheers
Hey OP, cool idea! But it's already on the list of things that Garry and his team might consider, please check it out before suggesting more stuff http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
I remember a while back that Garry posted a mindmap, found here. Any idea if that sort of thing has been updated, or do I just have to comb through the dev blogs?
Facepunch has an idea pretty much like this with server transitioning and certain resources getting depleted on certain maps etc. Look at the right side of the Rust mindmap ;)
I really like the idea of being able to construct your own boat/raft though, kind of like the flood mod in Gmod.
Check some of these links next time, or search the reddit :)

Bare hands are already on the Mind Map!
Garry further confirmed that using your hands will be a thing here:
Hand gestures are planned, as well!
Gun attachments were very common in Legacy Rust (Flashlights, silencers and laser sights). They worked out well or so I thought, although laser sight being less popular. They may need a few changes here or there but I'm sure they'll be back. The Mind Map also lists them, silencers being the exception.
You've mentioned in this thread that you couldn't finish your game jam game in 72 hours. Here's what I suggest, make that game again.
Do it from scratch, so don't use anything you made at the jam.
Detail every component of your game, using a mind map, like this one.
Once you've made the mind map, pick the first part of the first component you're going to work on.
Write down all the steps you need. Not what code you need to write, but brief summaries of what you'll need to do.
By doing so you create little steps that you need to finish. The smaller the steps, the better. If they are small enough they basically become questions that you can then google.
If you are ever unsure about how you would google the solution to a step, then the step is too big or too vague.
By constantly finishing these little tasks you'll also stay more motivated, which is a big plus.
Eventually you'll notice that there are very few problems that can't be made easier by breaking it up in to smaller pieces.
After you've gone through the list of steps for your first component, create a new list for tge next. Keep doing this, keep finishing those lists, and at the end you'll have a game.
Let me know if you decide to do this, I'd live to see your progress.
Good luck!
The planned feature with this includes items such as chests with things inside them. Please read the mind map that was posted. I'll see if I can find it.
Edit: found it: http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
People keep asking for features that are already planned.
You should check the Mind Map for Rust,
http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
Now check the Farming Section and the Weather Section, they want to water the plants, that requires an Irrigation Setup especially if the farm is large, there is no way anyone is gonna water a massive wheat field with a watering can. The Weather Section has water catchers, wells and rain providing water, Cast Iron Pipes could provide a decent system to direct water to housing especially useful for Communities which would see them using it in the kitchens to provide water for cooking etc, this means you wont have to run out to your water catcher every five minutes just to fill up a pot to make soup for you clan.
Cast Iron Pipe Furniture allows for the player to create their OWN CUSTOM STYLE furniture. As the following link shows, it would radically change the creative style in Rust. The devs wouldn't have to create shelves or seats, instead provide the Cast Iron Parts for the player to build the items for themselves.
Rust is going to get far more complicated anyway, so adding the cast iron building system would actually simplify certain aspects of the game, and freeing up the devs from having to create specific game objects and giving the player the freedom to do it themselves, which is one of the main aspects of Survivalism, especially Rusts signature survivalism style.
I can't think of any other game which is so dedicated to the risks and rewards of the player's actions. There is no hand holding whatsoever, so just surviving is an accomplishment. Everything you do in this game can be done to you, and there are few games that will make you so incredibly angry when you get beat and so incredibly proud when you win (not that you ever literally win).
Here's a roadmap for future features, if you're curious what's yet in store http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
And, as the above link attests to, there are few (if any) dev teams that are as open and as transparent about their development. See playrust.com and Garry Newman's page on ask.fm if you're looking for more.
Yep, in fact you can already see this in the development mindmap. There's a little section there for push notifications, with the example being if your sleeping self in-game hears loud noises.
So I was looking at Garry's mindmap and though "ya know, we need one of those for all the suggestions on Reddit." So I made one. It's probably missing a bunch of stuff, but I think I got the majority of the good ideas. Almost all of them have links to the specific post that the idea came from, but I apologize if I linked a rehash instead of the first time the idea was posted.
Basic color code:
Purple: Already in the game. I used these nodes to organize ideas.
Green: Addition or modification
Blue: Aesthetic addition or modification
Orange: Balance
Pink: Non-serious suggestions that were too good to leave out.
Please, if I missed anything, which I'm sure I did, or if you have the link to something I didn't add a link to, leave a comment. I intend to keep this map as up-to-date as I can, and your help is appreciated.
Bare hands functionality is planned in the mindmap (http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143). It was mentioned somewhere that you would be able to pick up rocks from the ground. No idea why didn't they added it though, it could be implemented in no time.
yeah and if you look at the development roadmap (http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143) you can see cars have been shoved in the corner a bit, we have seen nothing but concept arts on the vehicles, and shit needed to get the vehicles going, chances are they haven't even started coding all this yet
Well there is the mindmap in the sidebar. I'm kinda surprised no one mentioned this. It details most of the things they are thinking of working on and it's robust. http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
Also, farming in pvp makes sense if you have a courtyard.
They implemented significantly increased defenses for all walls, just recently, and it's making some people mad how hard raiding now is.
http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143 The mind map does mention being able to pick up and haul items (takes hands instead of inventory slots?) and specifically lists seige items to go along with that method of hauling/placement, so this might have that in mind.
I would LOVE if everyone posting these suggestions read the mindmap for rust first... http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
Boats are confirmed, and knowing Gary, there will be multiple types.
There are plenty of community and modded servers that have PvE rules. Though I think most rely on Admin being online to remove rule breakers, rather than actual server plugins (Though at least many of these servers have a plugin that prevents building damage).
Aside from that, if you look at the mindmap, trello and everything the developers have posted on the blog and reddit it's pretty clear they intend to add more environmental hazards and hostile NPCs.
This (or some variation of this) has been requested quite many times. Last time (like 3 days ago) someone asked paintable chest armors.
I personally like the idea a lot, however, if everyone is running around with custom shirts, how would that affect performance? If it's too heavy I would be extremely happy with Just recoloring items.
I loved Diablo3s system where you could get Inks and color your armors with those. Something similar would be nice to have in rust.
If you check garrys mindmap (http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143), you can see that he is planning for the future some user created content such as reskins and clothin (can't wait for that!)
Offline raiding is the one key element that makes Rust different from all the other games. The fact that you are ALWAYS online is what makes this game fun, nothing sucks more than games like DayZ "I'm being attacked? Oh, let me quickly log off."
We are mixing up 2 different things here I think.
Offline-defense Indeed it would be cool to have ways to defend your base when you are not online. I agree. Like AI controlled guards or self-shooting machinegun turrets. Stuff like this. Those are all ideas that have been brought to the devs attention and are on the mindmap, check 'base security'. Or a system like Rusty Sheriff that writes you on your smartphone if some loud noise appears next to your sleeping char.
Solo casual VS. hardcore group Even if the devs implement the things mentioned above, hardcore 24/7 groups will STILL be supirior to solo casual players. Thats what I'm saying, there is nothing you can do about that. A group can farm more ressources, shoot more guns, cover a bigger area. Unless you make totally unrealistic changes like "Make my base please invincible for the next 24 hours" there is nothing you can do about it.
Loved this in RO. Maybe this is coming.. see "Freeview aiming" on the mindmap: http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143
edit: Free aim in RO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1aC4puK5R0
There are numerous weather ideas on their mind map, but nothing about tides yet. It would be a nice addition, but not something the game can easily do without.
I saw this post too and wanted to create one myself. Its a lot of work, but i think its cool to throw all your "knowlegde" down on a mindmap like this.
Only really gotten to work on the TvT part so far. http://mind42.com/mindmap/e74f9c13-42fc-4dc9-99cc-f15b9966b281
Please let me know if something is confusing, would be greatly helpful so that i can improve the setup etc.
Reign Of Kings Seems like the only way it could be fun is in a group. I find it hard to believe a lot of whats in the video can be done by yourself. Rust has come a long way and has proven to me that they are going to keep up with development (lately). When you combine that with what their planed additions are (http://mind42.com/mindmap/7abd1334-d170-42e7-b869-f74010b9b143) it gets exciting.
I see what you mean; maybe it was another post that hinted about the custom item system. Well, look at the mindmap instead, under the User Created Content branch. Keep hope alive!
So you are entitled to have as much fun as the other alpha version which has since been scrapped?
My point is that they do have a plan, but they won't know how each step of it will effect balance until players have played with it for a while, and the balance will continue to shift. In any case, these are the same devs that made the Legacy game you loved so much, why not just trust that they (who make their living coding this game) have thought through their process more than any of us and will deliver?
This is my favorite progress made so far, rad towns + blueprints were a big reason why many people enjoyed Rust.
However, at this point I've been waiting so long that I can actually wait some more & will be returning to Rust once the whole priority branch is finished
if you are not sold on rust in its current stage, you should go check out the developers tree of what he wants to add on later, it looks pretty freaking awesome. here
Gases before hatchery are very uncommon except if you play allins (or play hatch first). I recommend you playing things like/ 15 Pool, 16 Hatchery, 15 Overlord, 18 Gas into Speed, banenest, Spine, and then choose the techroute or apply pressure first. I am working on a mindmap, This might be helpful once i extend it a bit again. There are possible ways to play ZvZ on it. http://mind42.com/mindmap/532a6107-f78b-4682-9b52-9852062c0703
