Xonotic is an open source version of Nexuiz. I personally enjoyed Nexuiz much more than xonotic. Nexuiz Classic is free and a really fun FFA/CTF with friends kinda game. THQ is releasing a rebuilt version of Nexuiz this year that was created using the CryENGINE 3 engine :)
As far as the xonotic/Nexuiz comparison to Quake. It is more UT than Quake but quite fun. If Quake & UT had a baby that baby might be something like Nexuiz.
There is also Nexuiz if you want a sweet Quake style FPS, fast paced, lots of explosions or perhaps Urban Terror on the more "realistic" side.
Nexuiz is rather old... I think the only place where you will find a download link is here. http://www.alientrap.org/games/nexuiz
You will have better luck if you look up Nexuiz classic, because Nexuiz is the name of some new xBox game made by the same company.
My high school has a LAN party club, sometimes we will play Nexuiz, a fun quake-style arena shooter. If I had more people to play with at home, I'd play it every day.
thats ok! Nexuiz is built entirely on the darkplaces engine, and was created/developed by Lordhavoc, the guy who created the darkplaces engine. you can download nexuiz classic from their website here
if you have any other questions i can try to answer them

Usually has like 30 players on a busy Friday or Saturday night, primarily Linux users or really tech savvy people that have no lives or lots of free time, and definitely THE best shooter I've ever played.
There is a user that is making a reiteration of the game to fix all the current problems, add unicode support, client/server shooting selection toggle per server, etc but that's something you can get into later. I highly recommend this game
No problem. I think you're probably right, there's just less appeal these days. Especially with the rise of COD-style shooters and consoles. As much as I don't care what people use to control a game, it's effectively impossible to play a game like Unreal Tournament on a console in the same way you could play it on the PC. It loses all of the nuances that you get when fast and accurate aiming.
If I remember correctly, the key to staying alive as the scout in TF2 is to use his agility (and double-jump) to sort of stay on the fringes of the action and then get around the sides of the action to attack/flank unsuspecting players.
Nexiuz seems like it might be similar as well. There's an older free quake-based version and then there's a more modern version based CryEngine 3 which you can find on Steam.
In the meantime, you could always play Nexuiz Classic. The graphics are dated, but it plays well. Oh, and it's free. Try it if you want a fast-paced shooter from the days of Quake and UT.
Looks very similar to Nexuiz, I appreciate the modding community and what they produce but Nexuiz already has a quite big community and players, even some weapon models in Xonotic looks almost identical to Nexuiz's, why not join forces then?
Nexuiz! It's an open source, cross-platform first person shooter. For anyone who hasn't played, it plays similar to unreal tournament.
