I highly recommend Peek! Easy to use, and simple.
For the lazy..
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peek-developers/stable sudo apt update sudo apt install peek
:)
Peek.
Edit: I just realized that you might be using Wayland, in which case Peek might not work for you. I'm not familiar with a screen recording application like this that does work in Wayland either. Check the README.md file for more information.
Thanks guys.
To create the GIF, it took me more time than it should have to find the right tool.
I used Peek : https://github.com/phw/peek
Definitly don't do like I did at first, capturing a video and then convert it to GIF.
Yeah, I try to do my best but it's hard to find good actors. This cursor is overacting a bit too much :D
edit: It's pretty quick to do with Peek
Thanks :)
> the only trouble i had with the program was that it sometimes doesnt open a save dialogue after recording a gif.
It definitely shouldn't do that, it should either show the dialog or an error message. Please open an issue on github if this keeps happening. The only thing I can imagine happening right now is that you accidentally move the window instead of clicking the button, that would cancel the recording (for reasons). I should probably try to figure out if I can prevent the window moving on the button. And change this to a "stop" instead of "cancel" (although the result could actually contain parts of the window frame in this case).
> Look into SimpleScreenRecorder for capturing videos. It’s not as easy to set up as Flameshot, but is extremely configurable.
Peek is pretty good, too -- it's billed as "an animated GIF recorder", but it supports h.264 MP$, APNG, and WebM output as well. It's great for doing quick animations to demonstrate something.
Yes, Audacious is awesome! Shutter for quick grab-and-edits, Peek for animated GIFs, and Warzone 2100 for entertainment.
Also, not related to Paint at all, but if for any reason you ever need to quickly create an animated GIF of part of the screen, peek is awesome. It's in the repos, so installing it is easy:
sudo apt install peek
Peek is a nice frontend for screen recording via FFMpeg. It's billed as an "animated GIF recorder", but it has presets for output as animated GIF, h.264 MP4, VP9 WebM, and APNG.
Peek is a great one i use myself. Can record both GIF and MP4.
Installation and usage is easy and straightforward.
Can find it here:
OBS is a must for full-on screen and audio recording, but if you want to also wrote articles with little gifs to demonstrate short/simple tasks, I recommend checking out Peek!
Peek acts like a screenshot manager/utility, but also includes the ability to record shirt snippets into gif format.
My supervisor and I use it pretty extensively for quick documentation write-ups to send to staff, students, and parents (work for a k12 school district), and it's been especially helpful during these remote learning times!
On mobile, so give me just a second to find a proper link to the package!
Edit: Added the link!
Good. A proper recording with OBS will make your project seem a lot more polished. Another thing you can use is Peek to make a gif of part of the screen. There are apt and pacman packages
I used Peek (Linux). In the past, I did the same kind of thing with GifCam (Windows). There are probably similar applications for Mac.
In either case it's just a matter of resizing/moving the capture window and hitting the record button. I didn't crop or trim it in post. This is the raw footage. I'm not sure why Imgur resized it. The video was 706x644.

Peek was in my repositories? A simple
sudo apt install peek
and it was install.
I never like Snaps, Flatpak or Appimage. If I have to, I build from source if not in my repositories.
It's a Linux laptop in the video, ShareX doesn't have a Linux build. I like peek (link) for screen recordings. As for screenshots, looks like OP is running Ubuntu, and that has a screenshot tool built in.
I mean, the footer is one line tall on my screen and two-three on yours, or it's a zoom issue.
> when I altered the source code to height:50px; it moved that button outside the div
Ah I see your point now. But "Try it" is the main call to action, and I think moving that to the header would result in far fewer conversions.
I used peek for the video, it might be Linux only.
With a compositor, I can see through the peek window, but I can't click through the peek window. The peek window gets all mouse and keyboard events, instead of the window I am using. It doesn't look like that will ever be fixed in peek, and I'm not optimistic it will be fixed by gtk or i3:
> But looks like there is not much I can do, if it needs probably be addressed in Gtk and/or i3
