Qwant is much more privacy-secure than DDG. Slant is an automated website, I would rather recommend reading an actual review.
But in essense Qwant is a fully independent search engine. It doesn't always give perfect results but well enough for daily use. I've used it now for 2 years. Some advantages are that Qwant is more privacy respecting than DDG.
Although anonymized, DuckDuckGo still sends your search query to other companies such as Google. DDG also uses Amazon as server infrastructure and is hosted in the US, which makes your data liable to any law enforcement pulling the Patriot Act card. Qwant has their own self-hosted servers in the EU so your data is protected by GDPR.
They also have Qwant Maps (https://www.qwant.com/maps/) and is working on Qwant Mail. My only problem with Qwant is that the "News" section when searching doesn't seem to work if you live outside France.
BTW https://www.qwant.com/maps is fully OSM based and -does- position itself as a gmaps alternative. Note that even though it is quite well funded, it is obviously missing a couple of bits and pieces that are these days considered essential.
qwant maps does a really good job https://www.qwant.com/maps/ (can be installed as PWA in fennec - on mobile)
aa the other redditor said OsmAnd+ is also good. https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Nouvelle-Ib%C3%A9rie
For OpenStreetMap-based services, try https://en.mapy.cz/ (uses OSM except for Czechia) or https://www.qwant.com/maps . OSM.org is not really meant for map consumption, more for people who edit the map.
Très joli endroit. J'en profite pour mettre la carte:

I feel you. I’ve been using Qwant Maps which is good enough for a lot of stuff, but for example public transit options are missing forcing me to still use Google Maps on the regular.
Again the not-a-board-member caveat.
OSM as such doesn't offer end user services, if it should is a matter of some debate.
In any case what google does is not replicable really by any third party without investing billions and having some way to collect massive amounts of personal preference and location data, aka as running the most popular internet search engine and owning the most popular mobile device platform. As such a third party will typically not be able to monetize the so collected data as well as google, it is really a financial non-starter.
That doesn't stop companies from trying, see https://www.qwant.com/maps which is probably the closest you will get to something similar to google based on OSM data.
There also is https://www.qwant.com/maps which is more like Google Maps with clickable points of interest, also based on OpenStreetMap. It is the map service of Qwant, a France based security search engine.
It's because the OSM leadership has decided to keep openstreetmap.org as a tool for mappers first. So they don't really intend for the average person to use it.
https://www.qwant.com/maps uses OSM and it's much more like Google maps, and has clickable POIs.

Also realausstoß kann man relativ gut nochmal 20-30% drauf rechnen.

I've seen this recently https://www.qwant.com/maps, is open-source and based on OpenStreetMap, but is in beta right now. It says that you can save your favorite places, but I have not tried it yet. 🙃
OK, mais:
Grand Place borde la commune d'Echirolles;
Teisseire se trouve en partie sur la commune de St Martin d'Hères et d'Eybens;
