Soundbounce is the replacement to Soundrop, an app that allowed users to do this back when apps were integrated into the Spotify interface. What it needs is more exposure and more users!
Spotify never had any involvement with Soundrop so I'm not really sure if they're interested in exploring this type of feature.
Soundbounce was developed to replace Soundrop. The client requires premium, but they also have a beta Chrome extension now that does not.
Spotify used to have an awesome app called Soundrop that had rooms where you could add songs to a collaborative playlist, then vote on them. Songs with the most votes would move up the list, and I discovered a ton of new music from the smaller niche rooms.
Unfortunately Spotify dropped its app support, but some guy made a program called Soundbounce that does the same thing, it just requires a Spotify Premium subscription to work. The rooms are smaller than they used to be, but there are a lot of cool people to listen with. http://soundbounce.org/
Fidelify, SoundBounce and SpotiAmp (looks like the official site is down, maybe search around on this subreddit) are the first that come to mind, but I'm sure there are more. :)
I've used tomahawk and I really liked it, but sometimes it would have issues playing/loading songs. So I'm on the official spotify client now. ^(For me, the changes for now are survivable. They just better get their shit together.)
Spotify used to have a neat plugin called Soundrop that did something similar. It seems http://soundbounce.org/ is the spiritual successor. Nearly all of my friends have Spotify so the logging in thing is not a problem.
I feel like this post is just a discreet way to rant, but Spotify's API support is the best in the industry right now. Perhaps if you had searched on this subreddit instead, you'd see that there's quite a few apps out and new ones coming out regularly. Most recently, there is vidfish. Beyond that, there is soundbounce to replace sounddrop. There's a bunch of lists already posted on the subreddit and I'm honestly too lazy to look them up for the hundredth time.
/u/secondreality is correct. Most apps can be rebuilt using the web API, but it is still up to those developers to do so. Half of the app database by the time that it was removed was spam apps that really did all the same but was white labeled for advertising.
Removing hosted apps and raising the minimum entry bar for creating apps helps ensure quality. Removing apps from the desktop client helps Spotify engineers with device parity for their software meaning an easier codebase to work with. And best of all, it means that all of their development resources can go in to the singular web-API and making it as robust as possible. And the resources that Spotify offers to go with its API are great. Features for the API are so much more comprehensive than in the old API. I don't know any developers who are complaining.
If you're really married to pitchfork, you should be emailing them and requesting them to build an app. You could build one quite easily yourself as well with limited programming experience.
tl;dr : there are a shitload of things to complain about with Spotify right now, but their API support is not one of them. Miss an app? Let the developers know you are still out there waiting for them to update to the new API
> My grandiose vision would be to have something similar to Twitch.TV meets Plug.DJ. Radio stations where people can tune in to music being picked by another person, or you can invite your friends to listen to music with you together, etc.. but that's a long ways off :)
http://soundbounce.org/ at least for spotify premium users
I've been using soundbounce with a buddy for a while now even though it seems to have been abandoned.
Any idea when a windows client might come out for JQBX? Only thing keeping us on soundbounce (I'm Mac and hes PC).
For any Spotify Premium users that want a similar experience with high quality music, a friend has made a downloadable program called Soundbounce.
It's basically what Soundrop used to be before spotify killed off it's apps.
Luckily they still have an OK API to work with so that Soundbounce is possible.
I've made an Outrun room there but because we're only about 200 users large, there's not many visitors, but would be nice to see some of you guys on there :)
You can listen along via youtube if you don't have Spotify Premium.
Life After Soundrop is a FB group for Soundrop users who went through the same thing when Spotify dropped apps. We inform each other of different communities, community music apps, etc for people looking for a new home... if you still use FB/ shrug. This is an open source Spotify connected community you can try: http://soundbounce.org/ It doesn't have the animated dancers. It's more about adding and voting music as a democracy as opposed to deejaying a set. Anyway, there are devs and brand ambassadors in that FB group from Plug, Soundrop, Sounbounce and many other communities.
Kind of unrelated but making sure you know that there is an open source Soundrop alternative Soundbounce also most everyone from the metal room I frequented on Soundrop have moved to plug.dj
