has EVERYTHING and pretty cheap, which makes me wonder?

The ones I have seen have unlimited clients and the monthly fee is per user (meaning partner, or other with their own login)
One that I am really thinking about is SuiteDash
Also check with accounting organizations. Some provide them with the membership.

We have been using it for quite some time with good success, and they do have a WordPress plugin that does a seamless login directly from your website.

I usually have an in-person meeting with clients at the beginning, middle, and end of each project. It's the best way to really feel out what they need. As for all of the "in between" stuff, email is fine, but I prefer to use something a little more secure and...fancy? I've been using a tool called SuiteDash (https://suitedash.com/) for awhile now, and it's been a great addition to my work flow. I can track each project (with individual tasks for each), upload files to show clients progress, and even send out invoices and get paid, all within my SuiteDash installation. Nothing replaces in-person meetings for me, but a good work flow management solution like SuiteDash is definitely a welcome addition to my business.

You could use SuiteDash - the PM module let's you integrate the client as a user. Within that interface is a "Client Talk" option that lets you maintain threaded conversations with the client, and email notifications are sent when the client sends a message.
