yeah but xchat 2 is. Xchat used to be open source, then one day they turned it into shareware. So some guy kept the source code so it could still be released for free. You can get it here
I'll look into it, but can't make any promises, as with Twitch, you never know how messed up things really are.
I personally use an IRC client btw. YChat (XChat 2 for windows): http://www.silverex.org/download/
It's no longer being developed, but otherwise works fine for things like Twitch.
A very similar one - they're almost identical really - is HexChat: https://hexchat.github.io/
X-Chat2 is definitely a favourite, it's simple all you do is press Ctrl+S, go to a network (quakenet in this case, add your channels to 'favourite' so they auto join, and make it auto connect.) Link : http://www.silverex.org/download/
This isn't IRL, but if you know anything about IRC, ##transreddit is fantastic.
(There are a number of clients you can use: the one I like is YChat, which is fairly easy to use for people not used to IRC.
Here's an image that should explain how to connect to IRC - feel free to replace "vagueabond" with some other username.
Anyways, explanation time: 1) This is what you use to connect. Items 2 through 6 are going to be how to set up that connection. 2) Add a channel. 3) Add a server. 4) Fill in the box with "irc.freenode.net" (minus the quotes) 5) Under "favourite channels", add "##transreddit" (again without quotes) 6) Connect!
(once it's set up, just make sure that 1) is selected and then click 6).
Of course, if your SO is a prying person, IRC might not work as well (although if you don't choose to enable logging, you can just exit out if anyone comes by).
If you're using Windows, I recommend the IRC client X-Chat 2.
Converting the bits into a string is not necessary and you would have to convert it again into the proper data format. This probably isn't the case, but it's possible that you misread the homework assignment and that you're actually supposed to interpret each byte as if it was a binary digit (i.e., the character "1" representing one bit).
Download Xchat a free IRC program <strong>here</strong>, after installed click "add" and then "edit" in the little upcoming window, enter a "nickname" and the same in "user","true name" and enter this as server: "irc.snoonet.com/6667". Then save and connect and make both the server and the channel a favourite so next time you just need to do one click.
KVIRC, X-Chat: Makes you pay for the binaries, but it is GPL, so other people have compiled it
I once saw people pirating x-chat, and faceplamed rather hard.
It's an old chat server protocoll. To use it you need a IRC chat program like xchat ( for Windows, linux users look in your repos).
IRC is a line-oriented text protocoll like HTTP, but has persistent connections. Both between the servers and between a server and the clients. The servers connect to form networks, like freenode or esper. You connect to an IRC server and join a channel, which is what the chatrooms are called on IRC. You can also send and receive private text and in most clients also binary messages. The channels usually have one or two # in front, like #reddit-java.
You need to download an IRC client and connect to the server "irc.freenode.net" and the channel "##esperanto". My preferred client is xchat2 (windows dl link - linux, see your distro's package manager). mirc is always popular, and most multi-person IM clients (Pidgin, Meebo, etc) have support (though it's often a bit limited).
You can also use a web interface as linked below.
Here's a list of applications I recommend for IRC for new users:
Firefox (on any OS) - ChatZilla extension
Windows - YChat/Silverex/XChat 2 - Xchat isn't technically free on Windows, so this a version compiled by a guy separate from the official XChat program so XChat users can run XChat on Windows without being annoyed by that little popup that wants you to pay for it.
Linux - XChat - Xchat should be available in the repositories of whatever disto you use, if you're a Linux user.
Mac OS - Xchat Aqua - I really hope you're not a Mac user since I never use my Mac and haven't used this program in ages. But if you are I will walk ALL THE WAY DOWNSTAIRS for you and re-figure things out.
Respond whenever you get the program of your preference installed and I'll help you from there. Just make sure to let me know which program you end up using :)
