Conspiracy much, eh?
Just use a different map provider. It's only grayed out on Google maps. Works perfectly fine here:
I noticed that too and I couldn't find any images of red squid boat lighting, there were green ones though.
I did find some night time satellite images of the Pacific. The location of the mysterious lights were 47°33'00.0"N, 159°12'00.0"E. Seems like you can see mysterious lights on these maps. They would be East of the north tip of Japan and south of the Kamchatka peninsula, Russia.

There are no islands where those lights are.
After searching and searching, I realized that Google Maps and Mapquest do not have the road marked. I believe its a road that leads to a hunting preserve, but I found it on Yahoo Maps. Here is the location. If you look up nearby addresses on Google Maps street view and move toward the road which isn't marked, you can see down the road (exactly where I took the pic too).
I noticed you're in Detroit. I'm telling you, this road is in the middle of nowhere and I think I just lucked out with a nice picture. Its not worth going out of your way even on a road trip.
Side note, I have family in West Bloomfield!
150 - 2 Hao Shanghai Rd, Gulou District, Nanjing, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China I used Yahoo maps for this. It's location A on the map. Location B is Skyways.
Okay let me try again:
Keep Skyways bakery on your left, walk straight ahead up/down Shanghai road ~ 100m.
On your left again, there's a narrow turn going up a little hill. The Mexican restaurant is at the top of the block.
If you keep walking straight up that road you'll see the tailor-shop on your left with a glass door. There's some bars there also, prominent of which is the German one. But by that point (~20 m) you've already passed the tailor.
Let me know if you find it.
F.Y.E In Woodfield Mall has a good selection of anime, but some are extremely over priced. I did get a good deal when I went there last weekend (buy any anime, get the Summer Wars bluray/dvd combo pack for $10.)
Oh DAMN... I should have checked these comments before I spent the last hour hunting down the exact location in google maps. The turbines were the first clue, followed by that small island in front of the larger landmass... after that I estimated line of sight across the bay and started comparing buildings until I found the matching location. Nice work, though, Reseachr... you totally beat me to it. :) Marking solved!
you won't find really anything better with pinyin than Google maps http://www.google.cn/maps?hl=en_us
only orher pinyin alternative are Yahoo maps https://maps.yahoo.com/place/?lat=39.90446907553041&lon=116.40701293945312&q=beijing&bb=40.20405042511329%2C115.74028015136719%2C39.605688178320804%2C117.07374572753906&addr=beijing
oh yeah and actually OSM, but those are even worse than Google maps
but regardless pinyin Baidu Maps > (Nokia) Heremaps.cn > Google maps
forget about Bing maps, they haven't discovered China yet, they are just plain horrible, few years old paper map is better than Bing maps
