I highly recommend installing a custom app launcher that lets you change icons when the app makers are idiots. Nova Launcher is what I use and I love it, but there's other good ones out there too.
Bonus points if you add an icon pack. I bought Alos a few years ago and have never regretted it -- it has almost all my apps and looks beautiful. When it doesn't have an icon for a particular app, the auto-generated icon often looks fine, or you can borrow the icon from another app (e.g. they didn't have an icon for the app I use for soccer scores, but I found a soccer ball icon from another app and used that instead).

After dealing with overly minimal layouts that lacked functionality, I decided to find a basic yet clean solution.
Icon pack is Alos, and the weather widget is Weather Timeline.

Only my most used apps are on the front screen, everything else in folders. I've a second page with the Chronus weather, calendar and task widgets, along with another Zooper widget showing mobile data usage.
