I've tried at least 20+ different systems. But always seem to come back to Trello seeing it (and similar kanban systems) are pretty much the only things that let you use two dimensions (up/down + left/right) to re-arrange things, and they make much better use of a computer monitor.
...rather than just a single linear list... which always ends up being too long to be useful, and generally wastes too much screen space and hides things off-screen with scrolling or nesting.
Also used lots of note taking programs over the years, but settled on just using markdown files in my IDE seeing it has good searching and heading outline features, and I don't need to use different keyboard shortcuts etc.
For important reminders of stuff that must be done on a certain date... I hate the fact that almost every reminder program makes it to easy too dismiss stuff, and they rarely let you easily check what is currently snoozed and when they'll unsnooze. The only decent reminder thing I've found is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dg.gtd.android.lite ... seeing it can keep reminding properly.
Everything else I've tried disappears too easily and has no clear indication of what is actually done vs snoozed. Especially for recurring reminders... most of them are very unclear when you're trying to differentiate between multiple occurrences of the same reminder.
ooh, I didn't realise I could set reminder defaults by calendar :) yay! another fun schedule re-organise for me to... uhm... not do until sunday when I'm supposed to do those things :)
for OP: since I enjoy google calendar, take this with a grain of salt, but I find dtg gtd to be a great ADD-friendly schedule app. its biggest flaw is the lack of a traditional calendar view, but I have widgets set up with different views (main one has overdue, due today and anything with "next action" set; another has everything I starred, meant for fun ideas). I also have a very very useful widget on the bottom bar that takes me to the quick-add activity, so it's never more than two clicks before I can start typing. :) it also has global settings for how intrusive the notifications should be, so if I know I'm having a scatterbrain day I can make it really hard to ignore :)
It would help if you would specify what features you're looking for.
My Lifie Organized is expensive but very powerful without a subscription unless you want cloud sync.
DGT GTD & To-Do List isn't as powerful but is free and still very good.
Yeah, actually most phone apps (and even desktop too) are pretty terrible at making your reminders/notifications too easy to dismiss and forget about forever.
I tried a heap of android apps and this was the only one that doesn't suck at that:
Enable these 2x settings:
This way for any of your reminders, it will nag you every 15 minutes, unless you snooze / complete it.
And when you tap complete, it shows an extra prompt to confirm that you really mean it.
So obviously you shouldn't put all your to-do tasks in there... just the stuff that you need to remind yourself of that is time sensitive or important.
For the rest of your "do whenever" tasks, either turn off the reminders for them, or use something else. I've found for that stuff onenote checkbox lists (with indented nested) works the best, and also makes it easy to put details etc in there. It's actually quite useful having the option to change background colour etc too... as especially with nested, sometimes you want the order to stay the same, but still make something further down the list stand out more than the rest.
DGT GTD is still available and it is best. Other app with similar capabilities is ToDo List Task Manager.
DGT GTD (I got the name backward) is a free app that does just about everything Toodledo does. It has an unbelievable range of features, even compared to some paid apps and SaaS. The only features it doesn't have are cloud storage, a desktop version or online version for opening it in a browser on your desktop, and a sleek look. I'm also not sure if there's an iPhone version. The lack of a desktop version isn't an issue for me as I work on my phone a ton. You can sync it with Toodledo, which back when I had Toodledo was awesome as their Android app was terrible then.
I can't recommend it enough if you need a free app for GTD or just don't need a cloud service and desktop access.
The pure approach is the reason why I paid for the service in the first place. Used DGT GTD previously - horrible experience.
But it's also the reason why I want to switch away (no subprojects)

Impossible app name, but world-class functionality!
> It sounds like you don't experience much executive disfunction
I do to a certain expect, but I just guess not so badly that making appointments or filling in forms are not doable. Although I'm generally only ever on time to things because I allow 2+ hours to have a shower + eat breakfast, and even then panicking to get out the door on time, heh.
My "regular shortish-term" and long-term memory are ok, but my immediate/working memory is pretty fucked.
> As a late-diagnosed adult who made a career out of identifying how poorly systems and processes are designed (because they were murder for me to use and I had to fix them before I could do my actual job), there are tons of small, intuitive changes that can be made to lighten the load.
Interesting, I was literally just talking to someone yesterday about this... i.e. I get super frustrated with how shitty most software/website/app interfaces are... I'm ranting about this all time. Even just some simply separation by background color would improve things in many cases I think.
Are you working in UX/usability?
No plans to stop doing my current work, but was theoretically pondering if that could be some future career change if I ever did want one.
> For example, an office can send a event invitation to the email on file when scheduling the appointment, so your digital calendar on your phone can ping you before it starts.
Definitely a good idea! Although really needs to be in addition to other nagging SMS/calls I think. I've never seen any full on calendar software that has sufficient "nagging" reminders. They're always way way too easy to dismiss and forget entirely. And usually aren't prioritised either. I do want nagging reminders for important stuff, but not for every item in my calendar.
Closest I've found is this app for basic reminders. But it's not a full-on calendar, and the development has stopped. It does have a nagging feature, and double-confirmation-to-dismiss feature. I wish more alternatives had these features. Have plans to build my own... but I have a million plans like this that will probably never happen.
> Or a long digital form can be broken down into manageable chunks with a visual indicator of progress and the ability to save after you complete each section, so it doesn't feel like an insurmountable obstacle and you don't lose progress if distracted.
Yep 100% agree.
> Prescriptions should be autorenewed, because requiring every step to acquire a prescription for the first time, every month for the rest of your life, is ableist as hell for a condition that specifically makes all of those steps extra difficult.
Yeah I've wondered about this kind of stuff in general. I really wish I didn't have to visit a chemist every month, but I guess it's understandable, especially for controlled stuff like stims.
Probably also complicated by the government/insurance subsidising prescriptions too. If prescriptions just renewed by default, there would be more going out than are really needed. No doubt there are some changes that could be made though.
Good ideas, thanks for sharing!
DGT GTD is a hidden gem.

I've gone through a ton of todo apps and this one has been the best for me.
I really hate how shitty the interfaces and features are of most calendars/reminder systems.
It's way too easy to miss/dismiss/snooze things, and they just disappear into the ether to be forgotten about forever.
I tried a fuckton of them, both for computer and phone, and the only Android app I found that is decent is this one:
A few reasons:
Overall the whole thing gives me much more confidence that I won't miss stuff compared to everything else I've used in the past.
I've been using DTG GTD for years.
Although the the UI looks slightly dated, it seems to address your needs.
I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dg.gtd.android.lite with moderate success.
Here's an app built around the GTD system idea.
I'm using DGT GTD, despite the "Alpha" in the name I haven had any problems.
I like that it works without an online account, but you can sync it with Toodledoo , or with other instances of DGT GTD via dropbox or an FTP server.
It's Free, but the developer accepts donations.
In my opinion it has too many features that make the interface a bit cluttered and this might be a con for you if you like the simplicity of Any.do
Reminders are in a long list and categorised based on Today, Tomorrow and Later: Check. It can show you the tasks by due date, start date or priority, if sorted by date they are categorized by today, tomorrow, next seven days, 7 to 14 days, 15 to 30 days, later and no date.
If I tap out of the pop-up, lock my phone then unlock it the pop-up comes back and it renotifies me: Nope, I don't think it does that, you can however set nagging alarms, and it will keep reminding you something every certain amount of time until you mark it as done. It also has a thing called floating events that might suit you.
Ability to snooze reminders: Check.
Custom notification tone: Check
LED support: Check
Swipe to mark a task as done in the main app: Nope, but marking a task as done is just a tap away both inside the application and in the Widget.
Reminders sorted based on time within each category: Nope. I don't think you can set several custom reminders for the same task, I do that with a recurring task.
Recurring reminders. One of the things I love about DGT GTD is the richness of options when creating recurring tasks, this is one of it's strongest points for me, very few apps I tried are even near.
No expandable notifications: Not sure if I understand you, but I think that DGT GTD doesn't have that.
Recurring & Location based reminders working simultaneously: I'm not sure about that, DGT GTD integrates well with Llama for location based behavior, there might be a solution for that, I haven't tried.
Ability to snooze a recurring reminder: Yes, you can snooze a reminder for a task without changing the tasks due date. But if you change the tasks due date, it might affect the later tasks too depending on the kind of recurrence you chose.
I hope this helps.
