I think what you're looking for is Galaxy On Fire It features a gripping campaign, the ability to roam around free in space hopping from space station to space station, destroying and looting ships along the way. Think of it as a 3D version of "Elite". Buy and upgrade ships, mine, etc. it fits your request perfectly
Mein Favorit immer noch: Galaxy on Fire 2. Falls du damals Freelancer gespielt hast, genau das aber mit schönerer Grafik.
Space rogue like in dem man eine schöne Story spielt als selbstständiger in einen Universum mit verschiedenen Rassen und Gruppierungen. Kämpfen, handeln, erkunden.
Just to add to what JustAnotherSuit96 said, there is now Galaxy On Fire 2. Just like the first one, the main campaign is completely free, and it's awesome. You can buy other campaigns for a pretty reasonable price. The game is awesome, and I've gotten like 40 hours of awesome gameplay and I only spent, (willingly), like 3-5 bucks on another campaign.

Guardians of the Galaxy is fantastic. I can totally see that jump-starting some kids' sci-fi obsession.
The thing that did it for me was this mobile game from 2009 called Galaxy on Fire 2. That was awesome, and I still pick it up from time to time.
there is also Galaxy on Fire 2... although, it doesnt have planets to land on.. but does cover the mining, trading, pillaging, upgrading stuff...before when i played it, it had to be purchased.. now its changed some and is free to play... but the core of what was there is still there.

Idk but try galaxy on fire, it's kinda open world in a way. And modded version is good too. It has great graphics and 3d space combat (direct control of ships not like a top down game or something)

Galaxy on Fire 2 (free/offline/1GB)
An open world action-adventure space exploration game. I've poured more time than I am willing to admit on this one..
Sure there's a PC version but it's pretty much an extended demo, it only has one third of the main story.
Part one is free, the second and third parts are very cheap to purchase. You can DEFINITELY grind your way to the end without spending a dime, just by ore mining, trading commodities, doing side quests, getting achievements..
The storyline is amazing and your main character is such a good comic relief (sometimes even subtly breaking the fourth wall), and the voice acting is impressive.
A solid 9/10 in all aspects, controls, gameplay, graphics and storyline.

Would Galaxy on Fire 2 be interesting to you? You have a space ship, and fly it around. One of the big parts of the game is buying low/selling high.
It's a really great game to keep you busy while in bad coverage areas or on the plane.
