I'm pretty sure there's an app that allows you to map these functions for any earphones.
Edit: Found it: Headset Button Controller.
u/abedfilms if your earphones have a button, you might want to check this out before spending money on a new pair. Works perfectly for me with a generic pair of Sony earphones.
The reason this doesn't exist now is to avoid miss-dials.
I doubt any phone has the ability to do this, however if you wanted, some buttons on headsets can be mapped to certain functions on android and (Jailbroken) iOS.
You could probably use those to create a macro to do what you need, but the first time you miss-dial and 911 shows up, they can and will be pissed.
Edit:
Example app can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset
Its some time ago but I was using the paid version of this one for a long time: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset Worked quite well, and there probably are other/better ones out there now
I feel ya! I've read up a lot on it quite a bit. It seems to be a problem with 2-band vs. 3-band jacks for the phones. 2-bands can get seated funny and touch the contacts in the phone that are meant for 3-band varieties that can control volume, track selection etc.
Give Headset Button Controller a try with everything disabled.
I think this boils down to a hardware AND software problem at the moment, which is inexcusable, but this option did work for me and allow me to start jogging again.
I also disabled Voice mate.
I'd be curious to see if this helps solve your problem.
For Android devices, button remappers may be available from Google Play (such as this (although this app is not free)). For iOS, well...
If none of the apps work, you may need to disable it from the headset wiring, as /u/magpupu2 suggested (or replace the cable).
Your poor phone! Instead of wearing out your hardware buttons, get the Headset Button Controller app. It has Tasker integration, does click counting, long/short click, profiles.

^ ^ Try that app first. If your headphones are not compatible you can also look into Button Mapper which can remap your Pixel buttons. (I have holding volume up set to play/pause and double tap skips song)
I can't think of any non-root solutions other than this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset
Aside from that, you might be able to modify your build.prop settings to intercept button presses on your headphones. That method requires root, and is quite technical though

this app had worked for me in the past when i had the 3.5mm jack issue on an older v10.
i didnt use it long so i cant speak for much other than that it got the job done until i got my v10 replaced.
This app is cool. It can't do what you're asking, but you can map the buttons that do work to other functions like volume or track skip.

I have this problem too, but I only get it when I am running. I don't know if this is a good idea, but tomorrow I'll try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset
To see if it can override the default behaviour, maybe to do "nothing". I know the bug will still there, but at least if it works could be an easy workaround.
Only thing that has worked for me so far is to install Headset Button Control and change every setting to "disabled". Free to try.
I am in no way affiliated with this app.
Try something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset
Hope it works! :)
Try a third party controller app, like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset
This won't fix your issue but you could at least remap triple clicking the center button to adjust volume or something https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset&hl=en
Not as simple as inline controls but you can try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headset&hl=en
You can map 4 button clicks to cycle through volume options
Yeah I've noticed this. Maybe I can make it work with this app.
