Yeah, although many default apps are giving options to clear the junk in one tap.
I use Memory Map, which is a simple tiny app, shows you a map of your internal/ext storage with each frickin file your phone has, where the size of blocks will be as big as your file is. You can zoom in to see the content within the folder and folder.. and then delete it from there.
Just give it a look if you haven't, I love that mini beast.
Have you tried going in the Settings>Storage and clearing the Cache? (Just click on it) Also try restarting the phone perhaps. Last resort, temporarily move some of your media off of it.
EDIT: Try using this app too to see what takes most space in a very visual way.
Memory Map graphically shows you what's using up so much space. It's not been updated in years but seems to work fine for me so far.
Use this app to localize large files on your device:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jzap.memorymap
Also, go into settings, sort apps by size and clear cache for big apps (Facebook, Gallery, Maps, YouTube, Reddit clients, Twitter, etc).
Seems like a cache issue. Until you get the idea what's causing this, you can use an app like Memory Map (~3 MB only), which will show you a map of everything on your phone that is taking space and how much. See which blocks are biggest, check content inside them and can delete them as well.
Android stores just part of an app on SD card, the biggest chunk of the app is still on the internal storage. I like to use the app memory map to check what it takes up my storage.

You can try installing Memory Map from the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jzap.memorymap It takes a visual snapshot if all the folders in your storage and you can see easily which folder is taking much space. Maybe you can find the folder you're looking for that way. Good luck.
Is it a Samsung device? I decided to get to the bottom of this on my phone, and I realized there is a bug where a preinstalled Samsung app (Samsung Members) makes a debug.log that keeps growing, even if you don't use the app. It ignores debug log size limits and just keeps growing to fill any/all available space on your phone.
I uninstalled the app (or disabled it, I don't remember if uninstalling was possible), turned debug to "low" (dial *#9900# and look for debug level), and then deleted the file (if you delete it without doing the other steps it just comes back). I haven't had this issue since.
If it's not a Samsung device, it's possible there's a similar issue going on. You can use Memory Map, and maybe you'll immediately see an issue; if not, clear up space, look at Memory Map, and when you get the warning again, look at Memory Map again to see what has grown.
I use this app sometimes when I want to see everything in detail. I don't know if the file permissions on a Samsung phone would be different to prevent it from working correctly. Give it a shot at least, it might show you something the integrated storage explorer doesn't.
use this, you get an visual information here all your space is being used. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jzap.memorymap&hl=en
and if you want to delete something just click and delete.
I've noticed sometimes that Android doesn't show the memory used properly. You can use an app to analyse what exactly is consuming memory in your phone.
you could try Memory Map
