Do you know Monospace Beta? It syncs to Dropbox, supports text formatting and has a very clean interface. Might be worth a try!
I like Monospace. It even has an added feature I like of adding a "#description" at the bottom for easy organization.
I was even able to make a text file in Notepad on my computer and send it over to my phone and open it in Monospace
I'm looking for an app to replace Monospace as it hasn't been updated in years. I want basically all of Monospace's features in an app that is still being updated: a simple, preferably MD2 design, option to encrypt notes, the peace of mind that my notes are staying on device unless I choose to back them up, etc. Design is especially important though as Monospace still feels very modern despite its age.
I have Monospace for taking longer notes for anything like idea or sitting in church scribbling things down. I like it because it has folder style and that can be automatically created by hashtags. Different notes with the same hashtag are automatically create a folder. There is also an encrypted option (#encrypted) to save private notes. $5 for the full version and can link in Google Drive. The files are a simple .txt file, so I can literally type a note in NotePad on my computer and push it over to my phone. Highly recommended!
You can decrypt notes using your fingerprint. And it's beautiful. Worth a try, it's free with an in app purchase for pro features.
Well, have they seen Monospace Writer? It's free and it's still in BETA, yet it has more functions and works better than iA Writer (which I bought). I immediatly bought it knowing how good it is on iOS and OSX, but it was a delusion. The day after I bought Jotterpad and moved everything there.
Check out Monospace. It has a really handy folder system and supports .txt and Markdown. Has a bunch of other nice features and looks great.

Cookicons does an amazing job at app icons (if that's what you're after.)
He did my Monospace Icon -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.monospace&hl=en_GB
Monospace Writer allows you to encrypt notes with a password and decrypt using Nexus Imprint. It's pretty minimal but it works very nicely.
> Some people seem to like the design and the Markdown editing, so I'm consider creating a lite client that has no online capabilities and saves locally - this won't be in the immediate future, but I'll let you know if the plan comes to fruition.
Please do.
Your app, offline, exportable to an open format such as txt, (even XML or JSON), would be genuinely wonderful, the Play Store is crying out for an app looks like yours, (and has the functionality you seem to have included, plus that which I've mentioned).
Closest we got was the long abandoned "Monospace" app.
I'm a fan of Monospace personally. Clean and simple, has all of the features I need without cluttering the app. It is a little pricey and hasn't been updated in a while, but I like it.
I believe that Monospace is what you're looking for. Sure, it does have sync functionality but it's not essential, every single note is stored as a separate file on your phone.
just curious though, what is monospace? are you talking about this app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.monospace&hl=en Currently using nexus 5x with pure custom pure nexus rom.
You can make text files and encrypt them. If you're on Marshmallow and have a fingerprint, you'll be able to decrypt with a tap. You can keep a copy on your laptop, phone, and drive by either linking your Dropbox or Google Drive account through the app itself.
Monospace is a pretty good minimalist note taking app with all that encryption that syncs with Dropbox. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.monospace
Omninotes is also pretty fully featured open source and has backup options

Monospace has fingerprint encrypted notes. Also it's a really nice little notepad app which is useful for taking, you know, little notes.

It's not specifically for students, but I sometimes use it to take notes when all I have is my phone:
And of course, QuickLyric. ;)
It's so beautiful, you'll want to use it even when you have nothing to write.
I can't decide between Monospace and Simple note. They're both very high quality note taking apps.
In addition, I highly recommend Texpand. It's a fun and convenient material design app that can replace key spelling with other words or symbols. Like I can use it to draw all these faces with just a keyword like "lennyface"

Have you looked at Monospace? I was praised for being a simplistic.
Edit: Typo
Maybe Moonspace Writer is what you're looking for?
It's Monospace ( for writing ) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.monospace
Monospace is a pretty solid (minimal) app for writing.
You could give monospace a try. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.monospace
How about Monospace - Writing and Notes? I haven't tested it yet, just read the Play Store description.
Straightforward, no bullshit, supports markdown.
Ever tried Monospace? You need pro to sync though.
Has encryption, nice organization with the use of #s, great design, and it's minimal
Which phone do you use?
If android, look up the "monospace" editor. Its a markdown word processor, and pretty great to use:
