It might be possible to use a standalone vr headset to do what you want, but it's going to be a gamble (buying the hardware and then maybe finding the right setup to have it working as desired).
For smartphones, there's the Litchi app, an alternative to the DJI Go app that has a vr mode but, when I tried (a couple years ago?) latency was far from ideal. It might have improved though. It basically lets you use the phone as a vr headset for your phone.
Another option for smartphone based drone vr could be using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs
It renders all Android apps side by side, so you could have the DJI app converted for VR. It supports a limited range of devices, and the phone needs to be rooted. Plus you won't have head tracking.
Alternatively, the Lenovo Mirage Solo allows displaying flat/traditional apps, so you should be able to get the DJI Go running on it. The view will be like a cinema, without head tracking.
These are all the options I can think of, and none of them will come close to the quality of using DJI Goggles which, btw, do have hdmi input so you can use it to watch movies or play games (not in VR, but in cinema mode).
Jack of all trades, master of none...

really ? I'm using this right now on my N5 and it works fine, its not perfect but It works, I don't use netflix so can't say if that works but dolphin browser works and I'm using a BT mouse with it.
Native SBS does it but it's only compatible with certain roms last I tried (few years back).
Native SBS for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs&hl=en
No distortion correction yet, and it only supports a handful of ROM's on a handful of phones, but it does work (on my 1+1 running CM13)
Actually, while it's a hack that requires root and only works on some versions of Android, this is possible using Native SBS for Android.
There was also some Chinese app made with one particular headset in mind that provided this ability, but I am not going to remember the name, and what I do remember is it had a hilarious amount of permissions.
I think that as mentioned by others, it should be possible in more recent versions of Android to make a root-less app that acts as an overlay...
Hi, There's Native SBS for android that works with the cardboard that is ment to do what you asked. Here is the google play link for the app.
We're all, I assure u. :) I found this a while ago, but not sure if ti's actively developed. In any case it doesn't seem to be compatible with S6 which i have.
In Phone mode (Landscape).
For Kodi, theres a SBS option to view it within the headset. For other apps that have this option available within the app it works well (like TrinusVR).
Cardboard apps show up fine (sbs), but no tracking = useless (as mentioned)
There are some SBS Apps that you can test like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs&hl=en_US
That claim to let you use other apps in SBS mode, but I haven't tested those personally. (I'll stick with the Vysor Method for now)
if you use android 4.4.2 or 6.0, let try SBS Native :) require root :V https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs&hl=vi
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs You need root for this to work but it does what you are asking.
I use native sbs app with my N5, use a BT mouse with it and its android on your face.
Possible but might take alot of work. Here is someone's attempt but abandoned https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.frma.sbs
If your phone is rooted, you can use Native SBS to turn the Android UI into SBS.
For VNC, you can use RV Remote Desktop or VR VNC.

Only app I'm aware of. I think it's only compatible with rooted kit Kat or lollipop versions of Android, unfortunately
If you have the right android phone rooted, you could split the feed from a DJI Phantom. But it wouldn't have head tracking.

Found it. Looks like it has pretty limited device support.
