I'm hearing this elsewhere with some other controllers. I'm guessing the controller driver may be mapping DPad to cursor keys. I will try and push an update to work around this. Please if it is not too much of a hassle, could you test your controller with this free app, and report here if the DPAd is appearing as regular button presses or not?
The Default Daydream App, with the Daydream, IMO.
After that, I have forgotten the name (cause the name was something stupid like "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah") but it's a mobile phone port of the PC game with the same name.
Edit: remembered the name after a lot of googling, caaaaaaaaaaaardboard!!!!!
You can view YouTube videos (normal ones, 3D stereo ones, and 360° ones) in VR using Fulldive. It has navigation controls.
I don't know what you mean by "without Google cardboard", though.
i was looking around for such a thing and was recommended this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.loadinghome.vrspacelastmission&rdid=net.loadinghome.vrspacelastmission
will try it in a moment
edit: it's alright. doesnt seem to have speed controls or much to see in level design. enemies go in front of you so you can shoot them quite easily. not really challenging, have no feedback that my ship was hit except for an ever decreasing life bar which wasn't that noticable, i get 30fps on my Huawei P9 and mild motion sickness.
Hello, you could check out our app, that is not exactly psychedelic but I can assume that you should appreciate some good psybient music and immersive cosmic atmosphere, so here is the link to it - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bce.VR
My games use an innovative new input method that actually detects steps so you just stand up and walk in place and you can move around the VR world. I think it makes the games much more fun and immersive. I have used this method in two games My most recent is VR Room Escape https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jellyware.vrroomescape And my earlier VR Dungeon https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jellywaregames.vrdungeon1 Both are experimental VR environment type of games but they do provide a good amount of fun
As a developer, I ported Tuscany Demo from Oculus Rift to mobiles without gyroscope and even without compass, using back camera to detect yaw. It is an expensive demo, if you need a low quality one, contact me.
If you wanna try my app: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B91dwUR-bwKIc0lZLXR1VnMtZGM/view?usp=sharing
Also, there is an app that uses compass to detect movement: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sriley.game.cardboard
But most of the apps (and the best ones) need gyro to work.
I have an app that can basically do that, but that's not its intended purpose, so you may discover some annoyances.
Home Theater VR is a video player app that i made, and it has what i call a "view-through" theater. It shows a movie screen in front of the view from the back camera. But the camera view is locked to the head tracking, so you can just look away from the video screen, or recenter in the opposite direction that you want to look, and you'll see the full unobstructed camera image.
There's an app on the Play Store called "Reality Hacker VR" that is camera vision, with options to add filters for both fun and functionality. It can correct colorblindness. It worked pretty well for me, but I have no vision deficits aside from a very acute nearsightedness. Give it a try! Hopefully it will do what you're looking for. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.visor.visionhacker
I think Home Theater VR is what you're looking for. Be aware that it's not technically a cardboard app, it's a completely custom VR system with manual adjustments, and it may take some tweaking to get it setup just right for your eyes.
It can use "open with" from file browser apps, and it has a VR menu with gaze/gamepad control, so you can do everything without taking off the headset. It also has an in-app file browser, as well as network file streaming, and PC monitor mirroring.
Disclaimer: I'm the developer
My app Home Theater VR lets you stream video files, or you can stream your desktop and just use your computer as you normally do. Also has a lot of option for viewing environments, and fully adjustable FOV, IPD, etc.
There have been many discussions on what headsets are best in r/GoogleCardboard and I guess also here. In all likelihood, you don't want something "very, very similar" to actual Google Cardboard, as that sucks. You want a better headset, with better lenses, better materials, better padding, etc. Headsets that are actually approved by Google under the "Cardboard" branding must not have headstraps; they did this because they don't expect the experience to be reasonable (or perhaps even safe) except for very short amount of time, but anyone who's used these headsets would tell you that without headstraps, you don't get too far.
I have a BoboVR Z4 and a Mojing S1, and I found the latter especially impressive, but only if your phone fits in it, while the former is very well-known and praised for all its features, but at the same time, the lenses make for a smaller FOV than the S1.
This site has a nice comparison where many headsets are tested for their optical properties. There are also other concerns, but that could be a start. Sites in VR itself is also a good app to showcase static VR and evaluate the picture quality of a given setup.
Try this app. You can adjust all the settings to make it look right with any headset.
Disclaimer: I'm the developer of that app
Free and no ads but you'll need an old school twin stick Bluetooth gamepad https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baroquedub.gvrFpsGoogleVr (I made this over three years ago but plenty of people still seem to be enjoying it. Hope you do too)
My app can play up to 4k. It's called Home Theater VR
It seems weird though that you have trouble finding apps to play your videos. Is there something special about the videos? Are you encoding them yourself?
If my app won't play it, please let me know. I'm still actively developing the app when i think of new features to add or when i find bugs, and my last update was earlier today. So if the videos don't work in my app, i'd be happy to try and get them to work.
Var´s VR Player, start movie like "normal 2D, non static". Set it to be huge screen, and always use full HD movies, or bigger resolution (it makes difference). Use it on swivel chair if possible.
I'm leaning towards forking out a few extra bucks and going with this 64gb white version of the Moto X Pure. What are your thoughts? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01979NQTQ/ref=psdc_2407749011_t1_B00R1984DI?th=1
Just got my Gear VR in the mail yesterday, followed your steps and I'm getting some pretty bad lag. It's definitely a network issue, however I am running high performance router(s). Any tips on wifi setup? 1st router is a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 I've tried connecting to both the N and G signals I have setup. From there it's hardwired to my PC through a Asus RT-N16 router that is running in switch mode. All connections are gigabit capable too. I also have a third Wifi network running off the Asus router but it is configured more for range than latency and it had the worst of the lag out of the three. I unfortunately have no wireless card installed in my rig so no WiFi Direct to test. Sorry if that got too nerdcore, networking sucks haha!
I'm going to update my Netgear's firmware and give it another go!
I got this one: ShineCon VR http://www.amazon.com/SainSonic-SHINECON-Virtual-Reality-Smartphones/dp/B015DZTCI2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462918669&sr=8-1&keywords=vr+shinecon
Cheap ($20) and works great! And its comfy with good leather padding and support straps.
I got a headset like this- http://www.amazon.com/VR-Glasses-Head-mounted-Headband-Smartphones/dp/B015SLWJ0E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1451462398&sr=8-6&keywords=android+vr+headset
There are many brands selling what looks like the same set. I would buy one that comes with the bluetooth controller, very useful for controlling the device without removing from the headset (allows the joystick to act as a mouse, and the buttons as a mouse click instead of the cardboard magnet switch).
These sets allow for adjusting the distance from the lenses to the phone display, and the distance between the lenses themselves.
I ordered a USB OTG + charging adapter (micro usb male to usb female) to try using a rock candy ps3 usb controller as a game pad (and hopefully the joystick as a mouse).
Get a decent headset, you need to make sure it's comfortable. I've got a few headsets that dig into the bridge of your nose and it's really not comfortable after 10 minutes of use.
I have something very similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/VR-Glasses-Head-mounted-Headband-Smartphones/dp/B015SLWJ0E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_504_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41R2h0bzdpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=02T7W6N6SPJ8P79MXAMG
Your Nexus 6P will do fine. It's got a good resolution on it.
There's an app called TrinusVR:
> Trinus VR (previously known as Trinus Gyre) was created to provide PC gamers with a high-end virtual reality headset without needing to buy expensive hardware, because you already have the hardware in your pocket. Trinus VR uses the display and sensors of your own phone to transform it into a portal to your PC games. Don’t wait till 2016, live your PC games in virtual reality today.
Download TrinusVR (Costs $5) on the Playstore to your Nexus. Then download the Desktop app for PC. Trinus is the only app that I have come across that uses USB tethering to "stream" the games to your phone with low latency. Using WIFI with TrinusVR has a high latency. It uses the phone's Gyro sensor to mimic mouse movement and it does that job pretty damn well.
If everything runs smoothly, you could actually have a better experience than the DK2. I had an Oculus DK2 and this method is in some cases far better than what the DK2 could do.
Games I've been playing: Arma 3, GTA 5, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, War Thunder, Crysis, Half Life 2... there's a ton of others.
If you have any questions, please shout, I'll gladly help as much as I can.
I've been using this one from Vigica for the last week or so and I'm having a blast with it. At first the suction cups didn't seem to hold my naked phone properly (I have a nexus 5), but then I decided to try it with my phone case and sure enough, now it's perfectly snug and doesn't budge.
I'm very happy with this one.

I totally feel the same way, I just like to sit back, sink into the game, and pretend that this is the world I inhabit now. I know this thread is old but I figured it couldn't hurt to show my newest game; Wizard's Might VR. It uses a controller for everything, spell casting, looking, walking, etc. I took a lot of influence from the older Gauntlet games because as a kid growing up, those were my favorite. I have a demo of my game for free so people can give it a test, but I just want to say the full game is not a tech demo of any kind and it has many levels, designs, monsters, pets, and cool secrets.

Paid version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DJCat.WizardsMightVR
Try this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.myklos.btautoconnect
It's an 'auto connect' app that some have been using to reduce lag while using a ds4 on Android. Just turn on Bluetooth in the app, then after your device is found, tap 'connect' and it should solve the problem. If that doesn't work, try this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waylonhuang.bluetoothpair
Similar principle, simpler GUI, but I don't now if it'll correct your lag problem.
It looks fun, but I would prefer it you playing from the perspective of a character inside the ship like in space arena and galaxy vr
Games wise try the DeadBotz 2 VR beta https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.AnjinGames.DeadBotz2
Its free and is outstanding compared to anything else on cardboard. Full multiplayer and local lan play as well.
You dont need any controller or anything else for this game you just stand up and walk in place and it will move in game :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jellyware.vrroomescape Which has same very cool valuable VR effects / feelings / experiences in it. It can be fun just to roam around and be immersed.
My game CurveBall VR doesn't require a button. You can gaze at the buttons to click. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/curveball-vr/id1109015169 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Burgoyne.CurveBallVR
Actually, we've implemented this feature according to Google's UX guidelines for VR apps. You can check Google's demo app and see that they propose to use similar "light" navigation markers. We decided that map pins will look better in our environment (they have somewhat cartoon-ish look).
