$7 or so. There's an evaluation version too. Sound is so much better in this than other paid audio apps. Best part is the customizable eq settings and the compressor.
Actually, aptX-HD with a quality headphones like the ATH-DSR9BT is really good. It sounds indistinguishable to my ears when listening to high-res FLACs on Neutron Player.
The detailed EQing and other tweaks means I can adjust the output to suit different headphones, my car, or that less than excellent stereo system at my friend's place.
It has a metric fuck tonne of other excellent playback options and features too.
I just like it ok.
They're probably just adjusting the stock volume, not actually doing anything meaningful.
Try Neutron Player and use the internal USB driver. It's somewhere in the settings. You'll have to adjust the gain.
Here are some apps (at the bottom) that let you communicate directly with the USB DAC.
A totally not Material music player is the Neutron Music Player which features quite all features you could imagine. It's not really minimalistic though.
Not using the phone as a player. I have a Sony ZX2 for that. I buy music via junodownload, bandcamp, 7digital and similar stores which sell flac. And yes, I only use flac.
If you can't afford a DAP (I can understand really. It's only worth if you have really high-end headphones/inears) you can try the Neutron music player for android. It's pretty damn good. But if the DAC in your phone sucks, everything is lost.
If you want to stick to downloading files via torrents, please check if it's really lossless via spectro or other audio analyzers.
Dr. Chesky - The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc, 192/24, FLAC
Neutron Music Player The stock player is also good, but it cannot play from network resources (DLNA etc)
There are two apps, that I personally find have better sound engine than Viper & Poweramp.
Neutron has a great audio engine which sounds more detailed than Poweramp & most importantly, has PEQ (Parametric EQ) which has the best EQ in any android app imho. Although the app looks horrendous, it's quick to navigate once you get used to the UI.
UAPP is similar to Neutron, in that it has it's own audio engine (sounds better than Poweramp and to my ears sounds identical to Neutron) and has optional in app purchase for PEQ. The main USP of the app is it's ability to connect almost any USB DAC to your phone by bypassing the phone's internal audio engine.
UAPP also can stream audio from Google Music & Tidal but that doesn't concern you, since you'll be only using offline music.
I'm surprised /u/vepel8 didn't mention Neutron Player - IMHO, it's by far the best player in terms of audio quality and features. What sets it apart from other players is that it uses its own low-level audio rendering engine (instead of using Android's) which enables it to support advanced features such as dithering and resampling, with DSP tools like a frikking 30 band parametric equaliser, surround sound and crossfeed for better stereo, DSD support, direct USB DAC support (without going thru Android), support for the latest codecs without depending on your ROM, and of course it still has all the usual features such as ReplayGain and Gapless playback etc.
If you're a fan of listening to high-quality music and have a good pair of headphones, then this is the player to get.
If you're still not convinced:
I use Neutron. Its interface is kind of old-fashioned, but it can sort by Album Artist, which is a must-have for me. Lots and lots of settings, too. Very tweakable, even the widget.
edit: also, the music folder on my sd card is set as the only audio location, so I'm not seeing ringtones, etc. My only gripe is that it doesn't automatically scan for changes, I have to do that manually. The devs say this is by design, to conserve the battery, but imo it should at least be an option.
OP, not sure if this matters (as maybe your phone is the issue) but on Android I run Neutron and it seems to playback my files at a much higher fidelity than the stock android app. I know there are a lot of apps like this one on there. Good luck.
Musicolet is a totally free option, so it's good but if you're an audiophile I'll recommend Neutron, it has a steep price and horrendous UI, but the audio quality is arguably the best even on my shitty phone and earbuds.
If you're an aesthetic guy, then BlackPlayer is the prettiest music player on Play Store, but it's not the best sounding.
A great compromise is Poweramp, not as good looking as BlackPlayer but not bad on the sound department.
If OP find Memoria have too much features, then there's Simple Gallery
Also, most phone nowadays already have the flashlight switch on notification panel, so there's no need for an app unless you don't have it.
lol I hope I don't confuse you with more options, OP.
Neutron music player, poweramp is old. :D I have used both, N is da bess https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neutroncode.mp&hl=en_US
Neutron is crazy fantastic, but you are sure right about the UI. It has great streaming support.
PlayerPro with it's DSP pack are highly optimized, but the UI is lackluster. Thankfully the Rival Stock v3 skin series help with that.
Neutron is not just an eq, but a whole player with bad UI but amazing for audiophiles.
It also has demo to try for some days.

Neutron Player supports this! You just need to turn off Audio Focus from the Audio Hardware settings and you can play music simultaneously with other players.
It might work on a chromebook, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neutroncode.mp&hl=en_US

Neutron music player. I use for blackberry and it's awesome https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neutroncode.mp
I used to use Neutron Music Player on a Blackberry tablet connected to my stereo. :)
For as ugly as PA is, I honestly don't understand why people still use it over Neutron.
