FYI - If you get the Pro version of the Screen Lock app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro), you can go to settings and enable the Lollipop and Marshmallow option "Smart Lock and fingerprint sensor" workaround. This allows you to use the Screen Lock Pro (shortcut) to turn off and lock the screen and then later unlock with fingerprint.
It bypasses the passcode/pattern restriction that normally happens when an app locks your device. I use it for the Nova gesture "double tap", and it works great.
I got around this on my GS7 Edge by downloading this app called Screen Lock Pro. Activate it, go into Settings in the app, scroll down to find the Lollipop and Marshmallow section and enable Smart Lock and Nexus Imprint option.
Now just set you Nova gesture to Shortcut >> Screen Lock Pro (shortcut). This will lock your screen after 5-10 seconds. It goes black (screen off) immediately, but if you wait at least 5-10 seconds then it'll be locked (requiring only fingerprint to unlock, rather than pin/pattern).
On my GS7 Edge, the phone requires pin/pattern to unlock after I lock it using Nova's "lock screen" gesture.
However, I got around this (and you can too on your 6P) by downloading this app called Screen Lock Pro. Activate it, go into Settings, find the Lollipop and Marshmallow section and enable Smart Lock and Nexus Imprint option.

Posted this in another thread and thought it might fit here as well.
Screen Lock Pro lets you turn of the screen without messing with the fingerprint function. Just remember to enable the Imprint compatibility mode. This way you can make a gesture or an icon (depending on your launcher) that puts the phone to sleep without using the physical power button.

Yes, that's the problem with most lock apps.

I've tried multiple apps, and this is the only one that works for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
To work with the Marshmallow lockscreen restrictions, the screen turns off, but there is a 10 second delay before it is locked.
Edit: Wow..didn't expect gold. Thanks!!!!
You can also get apps that do it. This app I have been using for years. It works with bio-metrics too:

The only workaround I know of is to buy screen lock pro or download Greenify and assign double tap to the shortcut of the app. It turns the screen off first and after a few seconds it locks the phone, fingerprint unlock works that way.
youll need screen lock pro and have nova run the activity:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
enable “Smart Lock” on Lollipop and "Nexus Imprint" on Marshmallow."
I have kind of a workaround for you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro&hl=en
Works well for me with the smart lock feature. I never have to worry about my power button becoming damaged/unusable, my phone is always on and in sleep mode, or on and in use, or on and charging, and I can reboot without the power button as well.

This apps might help since it supports the Lollipop features.
You may download this apps over here that is shared via Google Drive. https://drive.google.com/a/aiesec.net/file/d/0B1LCmamw6P3kV3QxelVMaGZXeDA/view?usp=sharing
Most non-root screen off actions currently break Smart Lock, which Nexus Imprint seems to be associated with. It's a known issue and Google is currently working on it. The most obvious "solution" to the problem is to simply use the power button to lock your phone, but there are some apps (I'm using this one) that have a workaround as well
I have been using this app for years. I think it allows double tap to turn off the display. I have always used it because it allows biometrics to still work.

There is a free version, but not sure it will do everything you need it too.
The Nova function is working for me now after the new update, but before that I used this app to get around it. It's not quite the same as the nova method, but it still gets the job done. You can set it to activate via Nova gestures.
Nova can do this with root access. Screen Lock Pro ($2.37) has a workaround. It puts up a black overlay that makes it look like the screen is off and delays about 10 seconds for the screen to timeout by itself. The two issues with this method are accidentally touching a capacitive button and cancelling the timeout, and being unable to use fingerprint unlock during that 10 second delay.
Try this app but remember to enable smartlock and nexus imprint. It will allow you to keep using your fingerprint scanner and also double tap to sleep. I think it will also work with AcDisplay. Try and if it does not work ask for a refund. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro&hl=en
Try Screen Lock Pro, it allows you to turn off the screen and then unlock with fingerprint. I have it set up to a gesture in Nova and it works great. Just make sure to enable imprint compatibility in the settings.

If you use screen lock pro, and assign it to a Nova double tap gesture, it will lock while allowing you to unlock with fingerprint the next time. It is a paid app however.

Screen Lock Pro will let you unlock with fingerprint if you set the Nova double tap gesture properly. I'll see if I can find the instructions someone else posted for it a while ago...
Edit: here is the explanation on how to get Screen Lock Pro working with Nova gestures - https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/4dvg4n/lpt_you_can_use_nova_launcher_gestures_to_lock/d1uvj10
You have to download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
And enable the marshmallow workaround.
I set double tap homescreen to run the screen lock pro activity
~~I'm systemless rooted and I would love to hear a solution to it.~~
This app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro works fine, well worth the $3!
Credit goes to /u/ING3NIEUR for finding it!
Nexus Imprint (and Smart Lock for that matter) breaks with most non-root screen off actions. There are a few apps that have workarounds, like this one
use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
enable MM support, set gesture in nova to invoke the SLP activity. Done
this app does basically the same thing
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
This is an alternative. Works for me now.
Screen Lock Pro is the 1st app I install on any new device.
You'll need to use screen lock pro. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro
There's one app (pay version) that allows turning off the screen via shortcut or double tap but allows the fingerprint scanner to unlock the screen.
