Glad you asked, my friend!
I make shitty mobile games and plug them anywhere I get the chance like the slimy bastard that I am!
Also been grinding to Plat in Overwatch and spending waaaay too much time on Reddit.
What about yourself?
Not only that but a lot of IAPs are things that are not intrinsic/beneficial to gameplay in anyway.
Often times items you buy are cosmetic, or something similar that acts only as a badge to say "I supported this company" as opposed to bettering gameplay.
It does upset me that people are so averse to IAPs. Most make many assumptions about their nature where in some cases (like in the first game I myself created) the IAPs are literally just donations and nothing more.
I even had to put it in the first line of the description because so many were apparently put off.
Started making "chose your own adventure" games in power point when I was six. So there'd be a crude paint drawing and some lines of text and then you'd click a hyperlink to another slide lol.
Later when I was entering my teens I started on flash games/animation, the only one I remember being a list of three characters on each side and you'd select two and see their fight.
Then I got into the unreal engine, made some maps.
Then a few attempts at an actual game around my late teens.
Finally, got into unity and released my first official game in a uni group project. Nuttack! With a whopping 20 downloads, at least 5 of which weren't friends!
Been a solo dev/hobbyist since then. Released Secret of the Cores around three years ago, I think it got to like 48k downloads.
Almost finished work on my own twist of an idle game called Above the Stars. What can I say, I love space.
Hey, I'm with you man. I made this game, after all. May have been shit and unpolished but the idea of a lengthy story game was there.
I hate "typical" mobile games. I much prefer a "real" game that I can just play on my mobile for convenience.
Been going gym everyday for the past few months. Really has made a huge difference in how I feel both physically and mentally.
^(Still fat as fuck, though)
Also, my first game has almost hit 50k downloads! I'm making decent progress on the new one, as well.
All in all, shit is a lot better!
Just did a big update to my own game. It's a space shooter rpg with exponential progression. Like Asteroids mixed with Motherload so mainly just flying around farming but give it a go if that's your thing.
Now with cool new upgrades that actually do stuff! Was going to wait to publish until I'd got the new screen shots up, but screw it. It's live now.
It's my first game so it was mainly meant as an experiment and as such is totally free (Ads are optional). You can donate via the IAPs if it you enjoyed it.
Yeah. There are highscores and stuff but that's it.
I'd love to work on a multiplayer game with online elements. That stuff has always intrigued me. Maybe a 3D ship combat game, or perhaps a co-op sequel to my first game, Secret of the Cores
But I'd probably publish those on Steam rather than mobile.
Not too sure, tbh. Depends on a bunch of stuff: the frequency at which they're shown, what kind of ads they run (length, clickrate, etc), which system they're using, etc.
My game used Unity's ad system and I opted to run big ads at a low frequency, as to not interrupt gameplay. Secret of the Cores ended up making around a £500-£800 from just under 50k downloads.
Not sure if that helps.
That's my point, that often the devs don't know. I remember someone complaining because Secret of the Cores (shameless plug) requested some absurd permissions.
Games always use external sources and you often don't know what permissions they require. Even totally legit apis do this. You add Google Play Services and bam, camera is needed to download. You add Unity's own advertising service, suddenly the game needs access to your location.
Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you, but there needs to be better help from google's (or the engine's) end if this is to be implemented. Even something simple like showing a snippet of code where the permission is necessary, so the dev might better understand and later explain it to the user.
That said, a malicious company could just lie. Fabricate a believable as to why they need such data and then just sell it.
You'd probably make the same kind of money doing those online surveys.
I also don't know how they'd even pay you that much.
I make like <$10 a day on my game and it gets like 500 downloads a day (at least since it's been featured).
I'm really happy with it, but paying that kind of money for that amount for downloads is just unfeasible. Admittedly the game is not laden with ads (and you can turn most of them off), but still. It seems way too high to pay per play.
I haven't tried to advertise with Google yet but I think you can get downloads for much cheaper than that, so I'm not sure what service is charging/paying this much.
Already plugged it here, but fuck it: Asteroids meets Motherload
Also available on a bunch of websites like kongregate, newgrounds, armor, etc (I'll link in a sec)
^(sobs quietly)
So I made my first real game!
http://armandoesstuff.com/productions/games/secret-of-the-cores/
Totally free, no ads or anything and it's got the best voice acting of all time.
It's called Secret of the Cores (shit name I know, I had to change last minute because copyright).
Anyway, I'd love for you guys to check it out. You can get it on the play store here.
It's also up on Kongregate and Newgrounds (although the latter seems a little buggy)
You can also play it on my website at ArmanDoesStuff (another shit name, I know) but it's being hosted for free, so good luck...
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and all feedback is welcome!

The game is a mix of Asteroids and Motherload. It is a casual, story-based space shooter that should hopefully be able to waste t least 20 minutes.
It's totally free as it was mainly just a learning project. I originally published it over month back and since then I've taken a lot of the advice I got from you Reddit to make improvements to the game.
It's got prettier graphics, more meaningful upgrades, music, etc. Many of which were from generous contributors.
I hope you'll give it a shot, know that all feedback is very welcomed.

Honestly, as much as I hate to say it, I feel they're a dying breed.
Why I feel they're weak at the moment:
They are a massive gamble. At the end of the day, people hate giving away money.
To sell something is hard, and with all the competition being "free" it's even harder.
The primary consumer of mobile games are either younger peoples with little access to currency or those who have a more casual play-style.
The latter is much more suited to "pick up, put down" sort of games where ads/paid hints are a more than sufficient business plan.
Hell, even when free like in my own game (woo for shameless plugs) which doesn't even contain ads. Still, even while making it I knew just how hard it is to compete with flashy puzzle games. They're quick and pretty and a little addictive, where the typical story-based game is far slower.
This bodes ill for paid apps as a whole. When you pay for something you want something back. A user wants to feel the experience was worth the money.
With most games in the free genera, however, this is simply not the case.
Except for a few really innovative games here and there that may be able to peddle a pro-version, no one is going to write home about a such a genera. People simply don't feel like they got value paying for a game like those at the top of the main stores even if they've wasted many hours on them.
Why I feel this is bad for mobile games:
As I said, this market saturated with free apps only grows more free apps. I really want to see more quality games for the mobile platform. I don't judge devs for making so many in-app items or ads, they're just trying to make a living, but I'd love to pay once for a decent game and enjoy it.
As technology improves the mobile platform becomes stronger and stronger, I see no reason why we can't have more in-depth and gripping games so I hope the trend of free app domination falls out of fashion.
Disclaimer:
I know fuck all about most things. Many people are saying a lot of paid apps still do very well, so perhaps it's just not a very popular genera to build towards compared to "free" apps.
In any case, I'd love to here everyone else ~~confirm that I'm an idiot~~ share their differing views.
Already posted to /r/gamedev so sorry if you saw this before.

So I recently made a company and published my first real game.
The first production from ArmanDoesStuff (super creative name, I know) is called Secret of the Cores!
^(Formerly Blasteroids before copyright...)
PREPARE FOR THE BEST VOICE ACTING OF ALL TIME
It's currently available on the Play Store (too cheap for an apple licence, atm) and a bunch of websites like Kongregate, Newgrounds and Armor (waiting on review).
Pay what you want for the best voice acting of all time.
Anyway, I'd love for you guys to check it out. I hope you enjoy it and all feedback is welcome!
EDIT: 3.0.0 is being published now! (slightly) Better art and now with music!
this one on android. The quality has improved since then lol
So close to 50k downloads!
Sure, give it a shot.
I just finished the last update around a week ago. About to start a new project.

I posted this last month but I've since made massive updates like music, better graphics and a bunch more features that were suggested by Redditors the first time around. Anyway...
The game is an Asteroids/Motherload inspired story game and is totally free! (Ads are optional and IAPs are donations only)
I hope you give it a shot, it's now available on:
I hope you'll give it a go. Have fun and know that all feedback is much appreciated.

Hi guys, this is my first real game and all feedback greatly appreciated.
Links to the mobile store and other websites that host the game can be found in the description, or in this post (in case the http://armandoesstuff.com/productions/games/secret-of-the-cores/ is down)
EDIT: Shit, I meant play store, it's not yet on apple.
http://armandoesstuff.com/productions/games/secret-of-the-cores/
It’s called Secret of the Cores (name changed last minute) and was inspired by Asteroids and Motherload.
I’d love for you guys to give it a go!
It's my first real game (worked on some other stuff in uni group projects but nothing special) and although it got a bit rushed there at the end (it was only meant to take ~2 months instead of 4...) it was still a great experience.
ALL feedback is more than welcome. I can't promise I'll add anymore content (although I really did want more weapons and maybe some actual intelligent enemies) but if you find any bugs please tell me!
If anyone wants, I can build it for WebGL and put it on my site in case you don’t have access to an android phone. But that might have to wait until tomorrow... it's 2am here...
EDIT: So I worked till 5am... but who cares, it's up on WebGL! (warning, save doesn't work for some reason)
Okay, now I'm going to bed.
