So I'm a fan of privacy, but before I get into that I'm also an engineer, so I tried to figure out why Sync.me is a huge privacy breach.
Well it goes back to when Facebook disabled the API of apps being able to pull friends lists. Therefore these sync apps are pretty much dead. So how does Sync.Me work? It uploads your contacts and numbers to a database. Maybe back when Facebook made the change, Sync.Me pulled the connections/links you had between contacts and Facebook friends, and basically uploaded that to their database. Now they have info that Friend A on Facebook = 212-555-1212. Meanwhile they see new user Joe Smith with Friend A on their contacts, but since Joe can't pull his Facebook contacts anymore due to the Facebook API change, Sync.Me sees Friend A is already uploaded to their server and matches with phone # and then pushes the photo to Joe.
This is exactly how Sync.Me was able to give me tons of my coworkers photos when I am only friends with a select few. By using a crowd-sourced contacts list, they basically can supply you with more photos than you might have friends on Facebook.
It's impressive, but I see this is the only way they can continue to offer a Facebook photo syncing service. OTOH if you don't want your info and contacts to get uploaded into a massive reverse lookup system, consider looking at Social Contact Photo Sync. Note that this requires Root because there's no way to bypass the Facebook API without being a massive privacy breach.
I was searching for a while, and I'm pretty sure this is the only app that still works:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
If you're not rooted you have to create a CSV of your contacts, which is convoluted and annoying, but blame facebook for their API fuckery. This is their fault.
Social Contact Photo Sync and Subtitles for Movies & Series They both work just fine for me.
Social Contact Photo Sync is what I've been using. It has a lot more ways to sync contact photos and some of them require root, but it can do whatsapp too.
The thing is is that you have to manually click on each contact's profile photo from whatsapp for it to work, but it's still a lot faster than setting them manually. The app will tell you what you have to do.
Try this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
It works with facebook, you just have to import your friends once. With root, it can even keep your facebook friends list up to date. Without it can't update your friends list but of course it can use all friends it knows already...
It allows quite a lot and a lot of networks, therefore it's a bit complex... But it's working
Facebook doesn't allow apps to access your friends list anymore.
There's an that still works, but it needs root. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
The recent Facebook 3rd party API restrictions means no app can access your contact list. The apps that still somewhat work like Sync.ME get around this by being a giant reverse lookup directory of phone #s and Facebook profiles. It actually works quite well, but your phone # ends up being searchable on their website.
If you truly want to grab purely from Facebook, you need to eitehr use the Facebook App or use Social Contact Photo Sync (Requires Root). I have this set up on my tablet so it syncs at home (no worries about draining my battery on my phone.
Facebook killed their contact syncing for good. You'll have to manaually manage numbers now, but you can use this to keep contact pictures in sync. You'll have to manually provide it with the profile ID's of all your contacts, kind of a pain, but once it's done, it works well. They have this script set up to make the process a little bit easier.
Facebook changed the ability of 3rd pty apps pulling contacts.
I did it yesterday, and used this app
You have to pull the contacts manually using their fb id or username, but once you're done you can uninstall, or keep to autosync.
Allows the ability to automatically sync profile pictures from social networks e.g. Facebook, Instagram to their contact. Works flawlessly.
This is a newer sync app that is showing a ton of promise. Works with a great many networks (including facebook). Can even sync to custom urls on the internet if you manually do it. It does need root to do facebook though, so there's that. But there's really no reason not to root a phone, so do it if only to get this!
Takes a bit longer to set up than Sync.me and has a few more hitches (I've found some facebook photos sync low-res for some reason, and the next night it's back to high res). But once these bugs are ironed out it should be the best thing that exists for android (although I wish they'd let the guy who made haxsync take over the facebook photo sync. Thought that was what they hired him for!)

There is this app that is not maintained anymore, thus I don't know if working with current Android / whatsapp:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
Same developer has another app called CoSy Contacts Sync for Whatsapp, but seems it is not available anymore for new installs. Only its Facebook version seems to be available and maintained.
Maybe there are other similar apps.
This is no longer a native Android feature. Samsung has added this feature to their TouchWiz framework, but it is not available as a standalone app or mod in this form. You need a different third-party application on the Pixel.
I use Social Contact Photo Sync.
Google Caller ID does the same.
Hangouts asks also so you other users can find you.
Same with Facebook Messenger
This is how WhatsApp and dozens of other mobile messengers work (via phone # ID)
It's easy to call people dumb if you just hone in on the one part where it uploads their entire contact list, but it does provide some benefits. Whether that's worth the tradeoff in privacy is up to you.
Edit: I agree part of the problem is in that Truecaller uploads the entire contact list so even though your friend doesn't use it, his/her number is uploaded without his consent.
But how else do you expect a caller ID system to work? So you have a small database of only the few users of the app or you have a massive database. I want privacy too, but I think some understanding of how the product works would help. I'm not saying you have to agree with the product, but the way its setup allows it to be probably the best damn caller ID in the world.
A similar application is Sync.Me. People trash it, but if you want to be able to pull Facebook photos and associate them with friends, it needs to have massive privacy breaches after Facebook cut off the API to read the friends list. The reason Sync.Me can pull photos of my coworkers that I don't even have on Facebook is because there's a massive directory of phone #s and Facebook photos on their system. On one hand it works beautifully in terms of match rate. I get far more photo matches than even using a rooted solution and pulls data directly from the Facebook App to get the old fashioned matching that HaxSync could do.
I sadly don't have one... I looked a few months ago but was unable to find something.
There was a way to export Facebook contacts as a list that Google contacts could import. Problem here is that the numbers aren't updated if they make changes on their Facebook profile.
But, I use this app to sync favebook photos to my contacts: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
I had that problem last month with Social Contact Photo Sync, which said I had to do it manually if I wasn't rooted.
Switched to Sync.ME based on recommendations here and it works like a charm.
I use Social Contact Photo Sync. It was recently updated to allow syncing Facebook photos on Marshmallow.
Social Contact Photo Sync should do the trick.
I've been using this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
Needs root to get into your FB contacts
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
The app uses Facebook/Twitter/etc to sync contact photos.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
It supports social networks as well as social chat apps..
I use Social Contact Photo Sync and it works great. I believe it needs root for Facebook though.
If you have root, you can try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
This is the only Facebook sync that I know of that still works:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelflisar.socialcontactphotosync
Try this. It was pretty reliable for me.
Don't. Sync.me is a shady company, that's probably not even legal in the EU. Fuck it, you as a user, could be sued for using it. If you really need the photos use Social Contact Photo Sync.
