I think you need root; those buttons are a special part of the System UI (that's why overlay brightness apps can't affect them), IIRC.
If you have root, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.janis605.softkeyz&hl=en
I was able to get the KitKat-style buttons back with SoftKeyZ Root.
(I should also clarify that I've tried ten thousand replacement lockscreens, and they were all awful and generally insecure, so I'm more looking for a way of modding the default Android lockscreen so that the opening swipe is unnecessary.)
Softkey Z, it costs 2 dollars tho 😔. You can't status bar mod with it, so flat style bar indicators (pro vesrion) would have to be used for those mods
The Moto G has on-screen navigation buttons, if you are rooted, you can use SoftKeyZ to change them. It's $1.99 on the Play Store but totally worth it.
For example on my Nexus 5.
I edited mine using this app I linked below and am running a custom ROM: LiquidSmooth 5.0.2, but the buttons are there in the bottom as you can see, different from stock though.

On my phone the rightmost button launches my recents screen which shows me my recent and open apps, basically the app switcher on an iPhone. http://imgur.com/uc8QQC8
The home button takes me to my home screen and the leftmost button is the back button of course, to go back a screen in the current app or to go back to my home screen if I'm at the main page of the app already.
This looks like the ticket! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.janis605.softkeyz

But you need root.
Doesn't SoftKeyZ do that?
You don't need xposed for this. You can use softkeyz to accomplish this. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.janis605.softkeyz
