Very few in-app purchases (unobtrusive). Not needed to progress. I finished the game without purchasing a single thing.
It didn't have ads when I played. It has them now, but iirc they only play when you die.

There's no sequel I've heard of, but you could try Swordigo, which seems like it was made by the same devs before they made Grimvalor. Not nearly as good looking, but i still had fun with it. The gameplay is similar to Grimvalor, but more simplified.

Go for it! Beware that it's gonna take some time to get used to just controlling in a 3d environment, but we've all gone through that at some point. Probably start with a 2d game so that you can get into gaming when the controls are still pretty easy (not that 3d games are tough to control, but it's a skill you have to learn just like walking irl) before moving to 3d. If you have an phone, maybe play something like Swordigo and see if you like platformers. If you have a computer, maybe try Pingus. I'm naming free games because personally I don't like to pay for things that I'm iffy on, but of course paid games are often better. Do you have a specific game or franchise or genre that has interested you? That could be a good pick even if it's harder to learn just because you'll be more interested. Find something that interests you and mess around. If you have a non-judgemental gamer friend, they can certainly help you out.
In general, don't let games intimidate you. You can try shit out for free, it's fun even to mess around and suck at most games, gaming is fun. Go for it. We were all beginners once.
That looks like a side scroller / platformer? You might like Swordigo, which is a hack'n'slash, side scroller, platformer game. It's also completely free. No IAP or anything stupid like energy/stamina that limits your game play. I'm not sure if you'd consider the graphics awesome, but you really can't beat a free game - that's an actually rather good game.
Another one, that isn't a side scroller, is Oceanhorn. It's free to try out and then I believe around $5.50 USD to buy. This one does have nice graphics.
I've been playing Swordigo for the last few days. It's like a touch screen version of Legend of Zelda.
If you've got any similar games to recommend (free or paid) I'm all ears.
Swordigo, Reaper, Implosion - Never Lose Hope, Pixel Dungeon, Mage Gauntlet, Wayward Souls, the various Square-Enix GO games, and a number of arcade and puzzle games that weren't riddled with microtransactions. Implosion in particular introdiced me to spectacle fighters/character action games.

Swordigo - Action adventure game like Zelda, but in 2D side scroller format. One of the best games for Android.
Grimvalor - It's by the same people who made Swordigo, another great game!
Horizon Chase - Racing game with retro aesthetics. Great (artistic) graphics and awesome soundtrack.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath - Initially released on Xbox (I guess 360), ported to Android. Great action FPS game with a twist in gameplay mechanics.
ICEY - Game within a game, a meta action game.
Lara Croft GO - Great puzzle adventure game based on Tomb Raider.
Monument Valley & Monument Valley 2 - Puzzle game based on optical illusions.
Oceanhorn - Zelda like action adventure game.
Beach Buggy Racing - Cart racing game like Mario cart really fun!
Stardew Valley - Farming life simulator, really really fun and time consuming!
Evoland & Evoland 2 - A journey through the history of classic adventure and RPG gaming.
There is also Prince of Persia Sands of Time, but I cannot find the link to it on the Play Store.
These are my all time favorite Android games.
