I just use an app called Wakeup Touch Nexus. You double-tap the proximity sensor to turn the screen on. Works amazingly well, and I prefer it over the power button.

If you find that it drains too much battery, I believe you can turn off every setting in the app besides the proximity sensor and it should perform fine with less battery drain. There are some other alternatives like Wakeup Touch Nexus and Glimpse Notification, but I have not personally tested these before since I still have the 2015 Pure right now. I just hope that I won't miss the Pure too much once I switch to the 6P. If you do end up testing out these apps, it would be great if you could report back with any useful information!
Newer phones do it - you can use this app (doesn't require root) that allows you to wake up your nexus 5 by tapping on the proximity sensor (the top right corner on the nexus 5). It takes up some battery power but at least its more reliable than the power button.

Its the sensor that detects when you're close the to phone during a call and turns off the screen (so you don't accidentally press something). Maybe it does other stuff, I dont know. It's located right beneath the speaker, you can usually see it if you look in daylight. You can try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wolandsoft.wtn
The cause is simply using the power button. As a work around, don't use it. Use a widget to power off the screen, and if your rooted, this to wake the device

Will give it a whack later though to try and fix it anyway :) Thanks!

I'm using this app now due to the same problem. Let's me bypass the power button completely. Turn phone on by covering the proximity sensor and a kill switch in the notifications shade.
Had the same issue, and the massaging and hitting and everything stopped being effective.
Used DT2W for awhile, but I found that Wakeup Touch Nexus worked better for me. The feedback of it registering a proximity sensor hit made it a lot less frustrating to know if it was working properly.

Use the wake up touch nexus app to save your power button. Just cover the proximity sensor and the phone pops on.
