Check out Xender app on your phone (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.xender) and navigate to web.xender.com on you chromebook - if both devices on the same wifi, you will get direct connection between devices with easy copy/paste from one to another. Google should build something similar.
I've found Xender to be really useful. Its really fast and the UI is really nice and clean. Lets you transfer to loads of operating systems (Android, Windows, OSX, Linux, etc.). Super simple reliable app, free, and no ads.

Let me introduce you to Xender.

I use it all the time, and its incredibly amazing. From what I understand, its pretty similar to WiFi Direct, only seamless. AND it supports iOS and WP, so your friends on other platforms won't be left out.
If your not opposed to backing it up on a computer then I would recommend xender to share files via WiFi network to your computer. Here's the link to the party store page:
Try Xender

Connect mobile and pc in same wifi network. Install and open xender. Go to menu in the app and select connect Pc. Now go to web.xender.com in pc. You can use any browser but i recommend chrome. Once you opened web.xender.com in pc browser the webpage will show qr code. Simply scan the code in xender app. That's it. You can see all the photos,videos,mp3 songs and all files. You can even download it to pc or upload a new file from pc to mobile. The best part is no data usage is needed. It will take only few seconds to connect. So this is the best method. To manually transfer files i use Xender. It's wireless via your wifi and is pretty easy to use.
Instead of leaving files on my phone, I use Google Play Music though. Upload all you media there and stream it off the cloud. Saves space and it's free.
xender is the best file transfer app...better than both pushbuttel apps as it shows file system and its work on same wifi network to transfer big files https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.xender
I believe you are referring to the file transfer app, no?
If so, try Xender

Android devices have an ext4 filesystem which supports files up to 16TiB. As I've previously mentioned, I have multiple files over 6GiB on my device as we speak.
The video camera filesize limit is a different issue and appears to be a software limitation for the camera app. As FAT32 filesystems have problems with files over 4GiB, this is likely a limit they put in place to prevent issues when saving to that filesystem (many SD cards use FAT32 by default). It has nothing to do with what ext4 filesystems are capable of.
In case anyone else is looking for a way to transfer files over 4GiB over USB with macOS, I've found Android File Transfer For Linux and Mac OS X proudly lists "No file size limits" in its list of features. In the meantime, I'll be using Xender to send over WiFi.
Install this Xender on both of them, and you can transfer everything. (no root needed)
Xender (Google Play) - With Ads

For transferring files:
Xender has a Material-ish UI and doesn't require installing anything on your computer. Not sure how that works, actually.
Dukto requires both devices to be on the same wifi network. The upside is it works even without internet.
Send Anywhere generates a key that unlocks download of whatever file you sent, or you can create an account to skip the key stuff.
Share Link also does something similar, with phone-phone or phone-PC functionality.
