Red Square is just a square with Kremlin, Cathedral of Vasily Blazhennyi and few other architectural landmarks, and Lenin's mausoleum. But for Kremlin and Mausoleum you need to buy excursion, and for Cathedral I also assume.
Museum of Cosmonauts is great.
If you have ISIC or International union of journalists card you can try to get discount in museums.
For city transportation buy Troika travel card and put money on it. 1 travel=30 RUB.
Don't go to taxis waiting on streets. The taxi of the same company can charge you more if you take in on street then if you call it by phone.
You you can use Yandex.Taxi mobile app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.yandex.taxi
You can use a shuttle bus called "Аэроэкпресс" (if it still works now) or the Yandex Taxi "Яндекс такси" (the taxi booking app). Yandex taxi supports English.
If you have questions or need help you can text me. I'm student, live in Bishkek, I know the city well, have the perfect Russian and Kyrgyz.
Go to the Ostankino Tower. You need to call and book in advance and have to bring your passport but the view is so worth it. It's not far from VDNKh which I saw someone else mention in this thread so it won't be too much of a trek.
Take a ride on a boat down the Moscow river from Vorobyevi Gori or Metro Kievskaya. It costs like 500 rubles IIRC (like $10 by current conversion). Go to Gorky Park, loads of young people hanging out.
Clubbing is not necessary but personally I enjoy it the most in Moscow due to strict face control and quality music. It can be very expensive however and having some girls with you might be crucial for getting in. The strict face control also means that it is very easy to get turned away especially with a lot of venues becoming 21+.
Get a taxi app iOS or Android. Also the metro app by the same publisher. Both come in English.
I cannot guarantee that I'll be in Moscow in 4 months but if you end up needing any help (like with arranging the Ostankino Tower visit), don't hesitate to PM me. I'll see what I can do.
Here's a generic tripadvisor list of things people reviewed just in case something catches your eye.
I think you may not run out even of "obvious" spots in Moscow or St.Petersburg in 4 days to be honest :). For example, Hermitage Museum only can easily take a whole day.
You can use Tripadvisor and look for what you like most.
In St.Petersburg there are a LOT of old museums such as Hermitage (link above) or Kunstkamera, majestic palaces and parks (although you might not enjoy them at winter as much).
In Moscow you are going to spend a lot of time in the city centre, but I'd recommend to go just outside Moscow to visit a relatively new landmark - the Patriot park together with Cathedral of Military Forces and Museum of 1418 steps. It's all located in one area and is all suitable for tourists that find them interested in WW2 history and military enginery. This will take the whole day.
Now about tourist traps and tips:
Wish you a great journey
You can easily visit Moscow and St.Petersburg on your own, there are plenty of people who know english at least a little. And most of people you meet in the street will be happy to help.
If you want to visit smaller cities I'd higly recommend looking for a guide or even a tour in english, it's not hard to find one. First google result for me was: https://russianhorizons.com/ - for example they have "golden ring" tourist route. It's extremely popular and would be an amazing option for foreign tourist.
Also I'd recomment to check out https://russpass.ru/ - at first look it would be really handy in Moscow.
And very important tip I give everyone who wants to visit: install Uber and Яндекс.Go for Taxi service and only use those. If you try to catch a cab in the street you are probably will be charged ridiculous money

>
> "Яндекс Go" уже доступен в магазинах Google Play и App Store.

The food prices are going to be pretty cheap if you cook at the dorm 100$-200$ is good enough for a week to cover the food even if you are super savory and even eat out. Avg food prices. The phone service is DIRT CHEAP in Russia compared to the USA, I lived in Aventura FL for 5 years and the prices are a ripoff. I would suggest getting this plan from megafon because of the operator's stability in Moscow and its region, good coverage and unlimited internet with good speed. It will cost you only 17$ per month but compared to US prices its a steal deal. I am basically a loner, so I can't really help you with entertainment. But I would highly suggest you get these apps: Yandex Taxi(Android) (IOS) (the taxi here is dirt cheap as well, and somebody will always try to ripoff you on a regular cab.) Yandex Maps (Android) (IOS)(These apps will highly help you with getting around in Moscow, they will help you with transportation A LOT (while we are at it get a TROIKA card(you can get it at any metro station), its a card for payment in public transport it will make it cheaper for you to ride)).
Good luck!
