Have you tried of these? https://www.amazon.com/Gus-Khrustalny-Granyonyi-Podstakannik-Drinkware-Beverages/dp/B072289347 There was a special technical standard for these glasses in the USSR and they're all of the standard size and glass holders were designed to fit these particular type of glasses. If your glass holder is not pre revolutionary it should fit.
Most of the commenters below have their facts wrong. Gorbachev lives in Moscow and doesn't leave the country that often. In the 1990s he continued his political career and even took part in the 1996 Presidential elections, meanwhile touring worldwide with his lectures (that's probably where that "doesn't even show up in Russia" bs came from). In the 2000s he founded a few charitable foundations, but they have slowly decayed with time. Now he's as non-public as it gets: those "is he still alive" comments are a great sign of that. He lives in his secluded countryhouse supposedly witing memoirs. You can read a whole longread about his current life here.
And yes, he's controversial. People who hate the USSR thank him for going easy on the people and for basically destoying the Communist government system. People who are nostalgic for the USSR and think that its collapse was a tragicl disaster, naturally, despise Gorbachev.
Glad to see the other redditors gave you the answer but next time you might want to use this tool to quickly translate foreign languages with a different alphabet from screenshots:
I don't know anything about the recent laws and KA-50 case but I DO remember a lawsuit against a Russian aircraft simulator developer in USA. He was convicted and served 1 year in a jail.
You're about to reignite the flames of the old holy war :-)
As a local I will encourage you to visit Saint Petersburg, and as a reasonable man I will advise to try to allocate more time and visit both (as a suggestion, an overnight train is a good option - you finish sightseeing in one city, go to sleep and start the next day in the other one). Both cities have sights to see, places to visit, streets to walk etc. If you can afford only enough time to visit one city then check something like https://www.wikivoyage.org/ and decide which city has more things you personally are interested in (if you're not into art museums then the Hermitage isn't a deciding factor, if you're not into military then Kubinka tank museum isn't a deciding factor etc). Or I can simply say - do come to Saint Petersburg :-)
P.S.
Personally, I think that Saint Petersburg wins when it comes to architectural side (I mean, the entire historical center is a UNESCO world heritage site) - you can simply walk along the streets and see something interesting. Moscow didn't leave similar impression with me.
P.P.S.
As for the food - the groceries and fast-food are virtually the same, you need to look into some specialized restaurants and bars to find differences IMO.
See https://meduza.io/en/feature/2019/06/08/how-journalists-and-activists-get-prison-time-for-drug-charges for a number of similar recent cases against opposition activists. For example, the case of Oyub Titiev. This time it was used against an investigative journalist of an important media Meduza, and not somewhere in backwoods, but in Moscow -- this is uncommon, so the scale of protests against it is unusual. Even people like battle-rapper Oxxxymiron and rock star Boris Grebenshchikov recorded videos in support of him, I don't remember anything like that recently.
Yes, I found old interview of Pikabu admin, where he said that name based on game Peekaboo.
Unfortunally, this interview only on Russian: https://meduza.io/feature/2016/04/13/kollektsionery-dorogih-kartinok. I have transalted text about name:
>The site name is based on a child's game in which one child hides his face from one of the parents or another child, and then suddenly opens his hands and shouts: “Peekaboo” - “I see you!” Hryashchev decided to simplify the name to Pikabu and bought another nine domain names with similar sound.
>Aщьф Лштшфум
Here. This is from one of the Born movies. For some reason, creators couldn't translate his name properly, so they just typed "Foma Kiniaev" on keyboard, but with russian language on (idk how to say it properly. sorry ;c)
Found this statistics and report for religious belief cases. Number of cases are very low (there were none before PussyRiot), but most notable cases are
1. Posted (or reposted) something stupid on social media - most of them.
2. Played Pokemon Go in a church.
3. Mad lad went into Buddhist temple, pissed on a Buddha statue and then kicked it.
Well, first two are in no way should be punished by Criminal Law, if be punishable at all. Third one can be prosecuted as Hooliganism.
As for insulting government authorities - well, authorities rarely deserve any better. There are two laws actually - one in Criminal Code and other more recent one in Code of Administrative Offenses aka misdemeanor. My main problem with them is that they can be used transitively. If someone insulted Putin (most prosecuted cases), then prosecutor's office can charge that person without even asking Putin if he was offended or not. In most cases he probably even has no idea what some random blogger wrote about him, and if that's so then it's not really an insult, is it? And if it is an insult, then he should sue him personally.
I don't know if Unlocator is reliable at all but on Russian App Store / Google Play Market there are reviews that it doesn't work since 2019. It's either the Russian IPs are blocked by Unlocator, or Unlocator server IPs are blocked by Russia. Try another VPN service.
In 2014 Varlamov wrote:
>В микрорайоне нет вообще ничего. Нет школы и детского сада, нет ниодного двора или общественного пространства хорошего, нет деревьев илавочек. Только бесконечные бараки.
There is nothing at all in the neighborhood. There is no school or kindergarten, there is not a single yard or public space of good quality, there are no trees and benches. Just endless barracks.
But in 2018 Meduza objected:
>Условный культурный центр микрорайона — огромная «Мега»; кроме нее здесьесть школы, детские сады, поликлиника, церковь, пара кафе и целаяроссыпь маленьких магазинов на первых этажах домов.
The cultural center of the district is a huge "Mega" mall; in addition to it, there are schools, kindergartens, a polyclinic, a church, a couple of cafes and a whole scattering of small shops on the first floors of houses.
I don't know who's right. Maybe both (4 years is enough to build many things).
It's not the first attempt: https://meduza.io/news/2016/02/17/pravitelstvo-vystupilo-protiv-zapreta-prodazhi-alkogolya-do-21-goda In the previous time, government claimed that it can't be done, because it's unconstitutional -- "The citizen of the Russian Federation shall be recognized to be of legal age and may independently exercise his rights and duties in full upon reaching the age of 18.". But this time the proposal has public support (78% according to WCIOM), support from the Ministry of Health and some people from the government, so who knows. Raising legal age to 21 or 20 for tobacco and guns also are being talked about.
Police brutality does happen (for example https://meduza.io/en/feature/2019/11/19/after-police-broke-a-bystander-s-leg-before-a-protest-the-russian-legal-system-did-nothing-we-asked-the-kremlin-why ), not sure about racism in police though.
For a long time, they barely existed. But in 2013, a new law was introduced (and was amended a few times). The procedure is pretty straightforward:
There are no sanctions for users who download copyrighted content. However, in 2017, another law was introduced that forces open proxy services and VPN services to comply with Russian rules on Internet blockages (copyright violations are only a small part of the blocked content). So a number of open proxy services stopped working. However, most VPN services continue working with Russian clients and evade the demand to comply. Thus, it's still possible to use torrent trackers with VPN (actually, local trackers, such as rutracker.org or nnmclub.to, are more popular than piratebay). But the law had its effect, since it's been adopted, there has been a huge rise of all kind of paid streaming services.
That's wishful thinking. The difference in quality is huge. There is no OC whatsoever on the front page of /r/pikabu right now. Not a single OC submission -- if you don't consider OC reposts of Reddit memes with Russian translation. Not a single text post or longread.
On the other hand on the front page of Pikabu (it's personalised, but you can log out and the picture will be the same) I see mostly original context, mostly text posts, and not just pure entertainment and funny memes, but news, educational/political/social/personal content.
> Well, when riot happened, a lot of OC-makers abandonded original pikabu
The whole "riot" didn't even make a dent in the traffic to Pikabu: https://www.similarweb.com/website/pikabu.ru#overview
Reddit is nigh impossible to navigate without a dedicated client app (and I'm definitely NOT meaning the official mobile app that's plain trash). There exists no standalone Reddit client for desktop. The generic browser version is a joke (the legacy design used to be slightly better than the new one). So, most non-masochistic people are forced to use mobile for Reddit.
Still, the link worked fine for me in Bromite Webview (based off Chrome codebase). Just find and tick the «use built-in webview for external links» option in your reddit app of choice. Every decent reddit app has something like that. I for one prefer Boost.
If it's the webview itself that's mucking up, root your phone and replace the proprietary webview with something like Bromite
In Russia - maybe. But Don't forget about the son of Elon Musk. At least everyone knows how to pronounce "БОЧ".
Yes the event is annual, but the number of people participating differ widely depending on a year. As a rule, bigger battles are held on jubilee years (20x2).
E.g. in 2012 to celebrate 200 years there were up to 3000 of reenactors (including 300 mounted cavalrymen) .
This year COVID-19 cancelled the meeting, along with the shocking event from the last year: famous historian, one of the main figures of the celebration and long-time actor for Napoleon Sokolov went crazy and killed his graduate student girlfriend.
I'm absolutely sure you can find a private Russian tutor here or, as an alternative, just study Russian language and literature in one of the local unis on an exchange or as a full-time foreign student. However, I'm not sure if there are short-term language schools for foreigners in Astrakhan, but I can look it up for you if you want.
If you're learning Russian / planning to go to Russia and especially to my city, feel free to PM me on Reddit if you have any questions or better contact through my VK page, becuase having a VK account is essential for a foreigner so much interested in Russia and Russian anyway.
>Were people happy business wise?
Ofc, tourists = money. Locals sold lot's of overpriced flags, hats, scarfs etc. Some landlords made years of income in 2 weeks.
>Did the tourists cause a lot of trouble?
My experience with tourists was 100% positive. They were nice happy people enjoying football. All the troubles I had were caused by fan fest organisation. Moscow's fan-fest was very close to university building so students had several issues with it.
Despite all of this, I really liked the WC and had a lot of fun.
On May, 24, which would have been Russian poet Joseph Brodsky’s 80th birthday, an artist painted a graffiti mural of his image on the wall of the school near his former apartment, which is now a memorial museum. Next day, the school’s principal decided to cover it with plaster, people tried to clean it up, the school put up more plaster and after several iterations it was impossible to restore the fresco. So now people write poems over that layer of plaster.
According to Meduza, the districts are Zelenograd, Bibirevo, Lianozovo, Severny, Chertanovo Centralnoe and Chertanovo Yuzhnoe.
Wise seems to be able to send money to Russia. Usually they are cheaper than direct bank-to-bank transactions.
For Europeans there is a great way to send money to Russia - Revolut. It's practically free, but looks like they didn't manage to enter Canadian market. Perhaps, if you know somebody from Europe with Revolut account, they can help you? I used it more than a year ago and it was very quick.

I'm a German citizen studying in a Russian university.
Most translation offices offer translation+notarisation. They translate it, then fold and staple it in a special way and put a stamp on it, saying that they saw the originals and that this is a trustworthy translation of your documents.
I had to give the same set (translation of passport, diploma, etc) to a Russian university. The translation office already knew what to do, since they deal with this on a daily basis.
Consulate/visa center doesn't do such stuff, more or less any regular, non-suspicious translation office will probably work. It's mostly not necessary to specifically go to a notary for that.
Edit - This stamp has something to do with the Apostille Convention. Germany and Russia are part of it. I assume you're from the US, which is also a member. In that case, translation and notarisation probably works in the same way as for me.
This is Sentsov before the hunger strike.
Here's him afterwards. He lost 20 kgs during the strike.
I know I shouldn't expect better from a modern-day tankie, but I'm still surprised by how much you people are used to lying and not getting caught.
Russian people in general I'd say are cautious of people from Dagestan and other Caucasian minority republic.
Now I don't consider them inherently evil, inferior or whatever. They are just people with a different mentality. However, in some parts of Dagestan that mentality apparently includes female circumcision. And that's just horrible and disgusting.
Great examples of manipulation and replacing facts with emotions and wild guesses.
We mostly read online media outlets and unlike in the West they typically aren’t associated with older physical newspapers. My personal favorite is Meduza. It’s got an English version too. I won’t be surprised if I get downvoted as it seems too liberal / anti-Putin / pro-West for this sub.
I have not heard about them before, but quick search shows that this company is registred in 2009, and does exactly what their website suggests (sells clothes and shoes). Other than that, looks like generic internet-shop that works in sports wear niche. I can't find any comments from their clients on the net(other than on their site itself, and those are usually fake anyways), so they are probably not too big. They also have group on the vk.com https://vk.com/footballsport but it's inactive for year now.
>Do I REALLY need a padded/waterproof jacket
Absolutely.

Well, this year's lowest was like -23º.

It'll never work. I'm sure it's just a pretence for someone cost to the government to make more money. Just like the Yarovaya laws: some years passed, nothing is as intended.
medusa.io has English version. Local media usually doesn't have localisation and it very depends on the region. For example I don't know if there any independent one in my region.
I don’t have an answer to your question but just wanted to share something that you may find interesting. I have this book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soviet-Space-Graphics-Cosmic-Visions/dp/1838660534 and it’s absolutely fantastic! Very beautiful art

A few officers also ended up "reassigned" to Tajikistan to serve as peacekeepers during the civil war. The ex-CIA agent Robert Baer mentioned in his autobiography that he talked with a few while he was stationed in Dushanbe.
Seems common sense to me.
To play devil's advocate and try to view it from both sides, I can understand her concern with maintaining a feminine appearance. But I do side with common sense on this one.
Just a thought if you can get a Russian version or import a US version. Army wet weather boots. They are rubber and slip on over your regular boots. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

If there's a local version of that, it maybe could be an option for you.
But common sense could also dictate you keep doing what you're doing. I'm just offering ideas to help you keep Granny happy.
"grey" means they are not for Russian market. So basically it's no warranty and no support, like "international" phones on amazon
Not really related to the war (forgive me mods), but it’s the thread where a lot of Westerners with whom I’ve tried to discuss these things congregate, so
Currently reading a rather interesting book, and the author seems to actually get a lot of things. Specifically about the scars of the Cold War defeat and the 90s, how it affected people psychologically and led to certain national myths because dammit, people needed to hold on to something

The labels in your photos rad only 125V-60Hz, so it seems it's made only for the US market.
However, the description of Anker 727 on Amazon says

If you still have the instruction manual that came with the device, check it carefully, maybe it indeed supports various voltages.

From what I’ve read, not really how it is usually seen on Cuba. In their telling, USA swooped in when they were already winning, and then were de-facto occupiers. And yes, they did literally refused to ratify the constitution, multiple times, because it was not in their favor

I am learning the language daily since 3 months, so I feel confident to give you a proper answer, by recommending you my current strategy, which is really working well.
Duolingo, Babbel and all these popular ones. They are very inefficient. They are not designed to teach you properly but to just let you use their app as long as possible.
Find a couple of websites listing tables of cases, numbers, to consult quickly when needed
After checking many, I found and felt in love with <strong>SemesterRus</strong>. It teaches you TONS of vocabolary and grammar from A1 to B1. It must have been developed by actual Russian teachers after some government investment. It is done professionally, easy to use, step-by-step lessons, tests, exercises on all the fields (w, r, l..), and apparently you can attend practice exams A1/A2/B1 which are sent to people to check (I did not try this feature yet).
HelloTalk. It is very useful to talk to people and practice your knowledge
Combine all these together like me and yup great do great! 🇷🇺
We mean that our Empire was more benevolent than others. In soviet times Russian-inhabited regions were even used as a milking cow for national republics, not the otherwise as some far right-wingers from post-soviet countries say today. RSFSR had huge positive internal trade balance, while other republics - negative, it is due to these transfers national republics had better infrastructure, less deficits etc. When these transfers decreased in 90s level of life in places like Central Asia or Georgia fell sharply.

It’s expectable as bolsheviks raised all nations of USSR, with the exception of Russians, to be chauvinistic with inflated self-perception. They were told that most production and resources are in national republics, their cultures are super rich and thus it could have been concluded that the only obstacle are Russian parasites, without whom Ukraine will become second France and Uzbekistan second UAE. Harvard professor Terry Martin quite accurately described soviet national policy as “affirmative action” : https://www.amazon.com/Affirmative-Action-Empire-Nationalism-1923-1939/dp/0801486777
Read this and don't ask stupid questions.
Not true, unlike in market economies in USSR salary cannot be considered a clear measure of level of life. RSFSR had huge positive internal trade balance, while other republics - negative, it is due to this transfers national republics had better infrastructure, less deficits etc.

Collectivisation mainly affected rich agricultural areas populated by Slavs. As for Russian, at first decade bolsheviks had projects to get rid of it and make Esperanto official language. Yet when they understood that is an extremely hard and costly undertaking while there are more important issues like preparation to inevitable war they abandoned this idea. I’d not fetishise language thing too much. Such a bureaucratic state badly needed unified language on its whole territory. It is not a sign of “Great Russian chauvinism”.
https://www.amazon.com/Affirmative-Action-Empire-Nationalism-1923-1939/dp/0801486777 In this book Harvard professor quite good describes that in reality it was minorities who were relatively privileged as opposed to Russians.
I use my own (wireguard and shadowsocks protocols).
From public vpn services (I only know about free services) I also know that ProtonVPN still work after all (There were news that it's not). You need to download openvpn or wireguard profiles from their website and add them to the wireguard or openvpn applications instead of using ProtonVPN app.
Psiphon works as well.
Lantern - there were some banned servers I suppose, but it still works.
+ Tor works with meek and snowflake, though very slow. obfs4 bridges are getting banned fast.
In general, VPN is still alive, but good services like ProtonVPN don't work. 1.1.1.1 seems to be still alive, I wanted to try ADGuard VPN myself, but I understand from the comments that it's better not to. Still, I advise you to deploy your WireGuard..
You wrote propagandist cliche, bolsheviks were russophobes playing anti-colonial card, soviet elite consisted of disproportionally high amount of non-Russians, who were put in privileged position over Russians. Good book about soviet national policy by Harvard professor: https://www.amazon.com/Affirmative-Action-Empire-Nationalism-1923-1939/dp/0801486777
Какой протокол? Тут пролетала новость что в каких-то регионах положили L2TP и IPSec.
Wireguard и Shadowsocks работают (свой vps за границей).
ProtonVPN, 1.1.1.1 WARP работает.
Psiphon, NewNode специально против цензуры сделаны, оба работают.
Из того что видела в локальном чате
>GlobalCheck сообщает (t. me/globalcheck/76) о блокировке VPN протоколов IPsec, lKEv2 и I2TP в некоторых регионах. Протоколы заблокированы (t. me/usher2/2337) в Западной Сибири, Краснодаре и Ростове-на-Дону.
Такие протоколы используют VPN-сервисы Proton, TunnelBar, Psiphon, Whoer.
А еще походу РФ забанили на Pixiv, вообще недоступно. От арт-галереи такую подставу не ожидала.
Sit down look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if you are a clown. For 8 years Ukrainians were killing Ukrainian Russians in eastern Ukraine. Plenty of video testomonies from people there labeled as "propaganda" right? Is the alley of angels also a lie? Ask yourself why are these liberated towns not protesting Russians? 14000 dead and you are over here "even if its their fault". You do realize that the referendums in eastern Ukraine were started by Ukrainian soldiers who were from those areas because they felt discriminate against for the language laws. Those same "separatists" are just people who are labeled as " separatists" western media has a label for everything you disagree with when it goes against their agenda. Russias fault my ass, sure russia sent trainers to organize the people after ukraine began bombing civilians.....
Here I am willing to buy you this book
https://www.amazon.com/85-Days-Slavyansk-Alexander-Zhuchkovsky/dp/B09YSWS1MY?ref_=d6k_applink_bb_dls
I have plenty of people who have the same story in those areas that literally cry everytime they tell their story.
And how about bessarabian bulgarians that were killed because of their ethnicity by Ukrainians also a lie?
ProtonVPN работает и без подписки, если не платить то режет скорость вместо ограничений гигабайтов, вполне удобное решение. Сам пользуюсь Surfshark, с каким-то промокодом взял два года подписки, работает неплохо.
“Monopolisation” part is that some Ukrainian propagandists deny deaths of other ethnic groups and say that it was specifically directed towards Ukrainians. Which is strange and hardly understandable if we take into account real soviet national policy of privileging non-Russians.

Quite good book by Harvard professor on this topic.
Bolsheviks were russophobes and their whole approach to national issue can be described as “affirmative action”. https://www.amazon.com/Affirmative-Action-Empire-Nationalism-1923-1939/dp/0801486777
Russian-inhabited regions had worst supply and were milking cows. Just look how level of life in for example Central Asia dropped after dissolution of USSR.
*Minority of Russians Partly because of imprinted propaganda, partly because the truth is too painful and scary
Concerning national policy look this for example: https://www.amazon.com/Affirmative-Action-Empire-Nationalism-1923-1939/dp/0801486777
First of all, I'm not from the US.
Second, your description is that of elementary books. What you fail to acknowledge is the mutant nature of communism since day one.
Take Italian fascism, for example. Mussolini and Gentile were Hegelians and very passionate Marxists. However, they were smarter than Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. They realized that a central planned economy and no private ownership of the means of production wouldn't work (something that even Stalin came to realize). So they basically got the Russian communism model and adapted it: 1) would allow the church 2) would allow the royal family 3) would allow private ownership of the means of production. However, almost everything else would be like in Russia: total control of the state, including no political freedom, no free press, etc. The industrialists of that time were not free, they simply had to comply with the totalitarian regime, otherwise ther assets would be taken and they would be executed. This is very similar to China and Russia nowadays. All entreprenuers, industrialists, etc., need to comply with the state, otherwise they are put in jail.
Your error is to assume that capitalism can florish or exists without freedom.
I recommend you to read this book because seems like you are stuck in the 80s:

According to the soviet policy of “korenisation” they promoted this label in South and South West territories of the former Russian Empire and counted people as they wanted, term малоросс (little Russian) which was used previously was strictly forbidden. Disproportionally high percent of soviet nomenclature were of non-Russian origin and if you are Old Testament-style thinking person, who think that a whole nation should pay for the actions of small amount of bastards you may as well claim that Georgians, Jews, Ukrainians, Latvians and others, who were prevalent in soviet power structures at that time are to be blamed. USSR was anti-Russian in the first place, if you study something more serious than propaganda of post-soviet states (Russia denies it too) you wouldn’t deny that. Thank you for the question.
While it would certainly feel like Russian government, would like to stop outside media reaching average Russian it certainly not entirely true.
Aside from certain media companies (BBC and DW to name the few) there are plenty of those that are still accesible. Funnily enough CNN is availble freely.
As for the VPN, it is very prevalent. Russians used when Roskomnadzor tried to block Telegram and they will use it again when it will happen to YouTube or anything else they want to access.
If i recount correctly Peskov himself mentioned that he uses VPN.
Probably NordVPN hehehehehehe (joke about never ending NordVPN ads on youtube)
Most tech savvy people use it when they need it.
I've personally set up a VPN server in my home to bypass GFW in China when I visit the country and I run it for 8 years already. I also use it in public places to make use of banking apps and whatnot more secure.
I used to have a VPS in Frankfurt, with VPN running on it too, for bypassing content blocks here via foreign IP. I am not very much into blocked stuff, but our officials aren't very precise with content blocking, and some unrelated sites suffer collateral damage.
But not anymore, since sanctions made it impossible to pay for it and my subscription expired. I am pretty sure a lot of VPN users run into this issue.
I am blessed to have good friends though, and it just so happens one of them has NordVPN subscription and he shared it with me.
Currently I am looking for a VPS service which accepts money from russian banks, or maybe a decent service which accepts cryptocurrency, since another friend of mine comes to Russia soon and carries a decent GPU for me. But no dice for now.
I have a free VPN just in case Nord gets blocked, but I don't really trust free VPNs. This would be my last resort.
Oh, grimdark is what I love, but no, none of the above books is of that sub-genre. Anyways, The Illustrious by Pavel Kornev is easy to recommend, since it is translated into English, it is available at Amazon, and though it is a pure pulp fiction, it is very enjoyable. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7WH3NL?binding=kindle\_edition&qid=1648973401&sr=8-1&ref=dbs\_dp\_rwt\_sb\_pc\_tukn
Awesome definitely let me know! Super weird how difficult they are to obtain. Someone else mentioned a newer model by Dymo that seems to print any language (you just need to add said language to your keyboard), I’ll link it below.

You do get that we are still bouth and sold, now we just decide our master!
>Wrong wrong and wrong
Capitalism doesnt mean totally free market, look at types of Capitalism buddy, and you dont need to respect freedom of speech to be Capitalist lol, look at the saudis
You are ignorant. You don't know that Communism is not an ideology or an economic system, it's a power project. Read this book so you will be less ignorant:
China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, are examples of hybrid communist regimes that allow for private enterprises, but maintain the fierce control of the state.
Examples of capitalist countries are the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, etc.
Because Zelinski is obviously working with the Furher of the future, they provide him with fake Russian actors to create propaganda like this. Here is proof:

I’m based in another country where VPNs are a part of daily life because the Great Firewall blocks access to most useful websites. Most VPNs here don’t work or are throttled heavily. The most reliable ones are Astrill VPN (which also offer private IPs), Express VPN (huge list of servers to choose from) and NordVPN. And your data is safe with all of these as they are located in places like Seychelles and have a long history of providing services to people in dodgy countries without an history of leaking private data.
NordVPN is great. Works wonders with your phone, super reliable speed, has the most servers to choose from out of all VPN:s IIRC and you get 6(?) users (3 pc, 3 phone or 1 pc 5 phones and so on.
I paid a one-time fee for 2 years, now I use it on 2 computers, on my phone, girlfriends phone and mothers computer.
Highly recommend!
Just check out this post's sponsor, NordVPN. With NordVPN you can access Netflix outside of your sanctioned dicatorship. Just simply set your location to Japan or Syria and access blocked content from around the world.
>I'll share my opinion as an American: Russia would have their own consitution written up that provides them similar rights as the West. Freedome of speech, press, fair "real" elections and presidential terms that can't be changed.
Like, Iraqis, Lybians and Afghanis are happy, democratised and tourism flourishes there, right? C'mon...
>our answers really just clarify the thoughts of the western world, that you are paranoid and brainwashed by propaganda media.
If NATO/Europe got everything it wanted, what do you think it would turn Russia into?
I'll share my opinion as an American: Russia would have their own consitution written up that provides them similar rights as the West. Freedome of speech, press, fair "real" elections and presidential terms that can't be changed. A booming economy would develop and tourism would flourish. Are Western values scary? I find it hard to believe people enjoy living in a country where you have to be careful what you say and who you say it to and where very low wages are so profound in a nation with so many resources.
A- what does a bureaucrat at the KGB have to do with Stalin? Or how does a mid level Manager compare to the Head of the CIA?
B-Did the KBG overthrow the sovereign governments of Syria (+3 more failed coups),Egypt, Iran, Guatemala or Indonesia? No that was the CIA
C-does the KGB have black sites all over the world used for torture? Nope, again that’s the CIA
D-while Bush was in charge at CIA, he oversaw Operation Condor which: “Due to its clandestine nature, the precise number of deaths directly attributable to Operation Condor is highly disputed. Some estimates are that at least 60,000 deaths can be attributed to Condor”
You should probably read this for starters:

Fair enough. I highly recommend reading Putin's Peopleif you have a chance. It was published in 2020 and it is not really a biography of Putin as much as a social, political, and economic history of his regime.
It makes everything that has happened much more understandable.
I don't know if it will help. Never used NordVPN. Don't know what servers they are using. And i don't know on what level your IPs restricting access. They could ban directly or some segments. So, here is nothing i can help you with.
I tried India, Israel, Hong Kong, Georgia, Turkey and Ukraine (ok not sure what I expect there haha) and none of them seemed to work; I figured it might be ddos attacks, but a lot of media is still making reports citing Russian statements and it’s been the second day now that I couldn’t get on any Russian government site. Is it maybe because I use NordVPN?
Some VPNs got officially blocked in september, and a few more later. Among that first wave was NordVPN, but for me it continued to work fine until mid-december and then stopped. Now i'm using the one provided with my password manager and it works totally fine. There's tons of VPN services that come and go, so there will always be some way through the censorship.
But over time we may have to rely on less and less established and reputable providers as the big popular ones are stomped out. Especially since most people have to make do with free options, which are miles more sketchy and unreliable.
Sorry for the triple post. Took a while to find what you wanted.
If you read the book, or the pdf, you’ll notice the Texas version presents “both sides” of the argument, one side being “white supremacy is good” (William L. Harris, 1860), and the other side being “the universal equality of the black and white races”.
So yes, there are current-year school history books in Texas and Kentucky that present confederates as The Good Guys.
I haven’t read the Ukrainian textbook so I can’t speak to how voracious they were at making your guy a hero.

Found a pdf. P367.
>is a VPN needed to freely browse the internet?
I'll copy my recent comment:
Depends on what are you interested in. I think most government blocks average Russian encounters are against piracy stuff - torrent trackers, ebooks, etc.
Then there are service blocks, i.e. "block all Telegram/Twitter". This is a major concern. Past attempts to do so were very clumsy (blocking half of internet, including government sites at one time), and among other gave rise to MTProto Telegram proxies. There are few active blocks right now - I think Twitter gets traffic slowdown, and LinkedIn was blocked completely a few years ago (not political though, it was about personal data storage).
Living in Crimea, we have more problems (and VPN usage) with US sanctions blocks. For example, Google Cloud and anything using it as backend are blocked. This is probably how it could look like for the rest of Russia.
Personally I use ProtonVPN for some sites (Intel Ark, DeviantArt, Google Play; Flibusta is the only one blocked by Russia in my list), and for Blizzard games.
Russia doesn't need NATO out any other US backed organization on our door steps. US imperialism bring nothing but pain and suffering, look at how we treat Cuba. Putin is not a good guy but he knows how the US/NATO has created instability in every nation out has occupied. Remember the US is not a protector of freedom or human rights we protect our own national interests in every conflict we enter. National interests is just politically correct way of saying capital, from oil to lithium from bananas to workers rights. If you have something we want you can bet the US is there in one form or another to steal it. From the CIA coming in and doing covert disinformation campaigns to recruiting military members to overthrow the government to NATO bringing war to damn near every non founding members to the IMF burying nations in debt. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/Official-CIA-Manual-Trickery-Deception/dp/0061725900&ved=2ahUKEwjuudfVmKD2AhWqJTQIHWwdACIQFnoECA8QAQ&usg=AOvVaw1vL9vzfSZzyl114O7jDCXK

Putins rule was and is bloody from the beginning
You're such a great historian - you should probably read the actual report, that is publicly accessible. And I
I'm not ignoring anything wrt to Azov. You're pretending that it's the defining element of Ukrainian nation.
Mariupol didn't ask to be independent, but it's not being "liberated". Slaviansk was literally occupied by Girkin(russian citizen) - so where is "people asking to be independent"? Does a foreign group entering your home demanding that you leave is "liberation" now?
I mean... Your own source, Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, says that there's no state sponsored "glorification of Nazism" in Ukraine.
If it makes your "historian" mind at ease you can call me anything. Doesn't change the facts that you omitted a shittonne of facts and are representing exclusively the Russian propaganda view of Ukraine....
and like a good propaganda victim you dragged all of the favourite talking points nicely covered in this book - Putin's Hybrid War and the Jews: Antisemitism, Propaganda, and the Displacement of Ukrainian Jewry by Sam Sokol
Thanks for carefully considering my thoughts. That is all I ever hope for on Reddit.
I too find much of the "progressive" cultural agenda annoying, idiotic, morally corrosive, and sometimes downright dangerous. At the same time, I loathe the inordinate power of the business lobbyist, religious scolds, and uneducated bombast too. So, I really am politically homeless in the US right now.
Culturally I really was happy in both Ukraine and Russia. Both are in many regards more refined than American society, and in the end I will probably retire to Eastern Europe.
I highly recommend Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia if you really want to take a deep dive into Russian culture. It is huge, but certainly an entertaining introduction to the subject.
It is interesting you were an expat in China. I know that gives you a different perspective from a tourist. What are your thoughts on Taiwan?
Best Wishes

They look suspiciously like современное искусство and seem to have dealt no actual harm to the regime, so whatever they wanted to achieve, their strategy was unfortunate from the get go.
